THE CORPUS OF PREHISTORIC POTTERYIT is hardly needful, after the discussion of the

dating in the previous volume on Prehistoric Egypt,to describe the present corpus, or the mode of usingit. I t contains all the forms published in the variousworks enumerated a t the beginning of the volumenamed, unified as a whole and provided with se-quence dates. The practical use of i t is by thegraveside. So soon as a grave is cleared andplanned, then the pottery can be laid out in order, each type searched for in the corpus, and noted byits letter and number on the card register. Thelimits of date can be copied out, and the resultinglimits of the date of the grave may then be addedas the date on the card. Such pottery as is worthremoval, and especially any new type that shouldbe drawn, can then be separated, and the remainderof common pottery be returned to the grave andcovered in.

In unifying the various additions-some 700-which have been found since the 300 types ofNaqada, many irregularities have been noticed, and some editing of the whole became absolutelynecessary. Even different types had been giventhe same letter by different discoverers. In theDecorated pottery especially, the additions hadmade a complete revision of types I to 19 needful. In this part, therefore, the present corpus makes anentire break with the previous registers. Some otherslight changes became needful also in other classes, but the minimum of change has been made. All ofthese alterations of designation are completelystated on pl. lx, under the heading of each volumein which a type has previously appeared. On thesame plate are conversion tables for reducingReisner's short corpus psed in Nubia, to the presentcorpus numbers. Every change therefore betweenthis corpus and previous registers is on pl. lx.

The changes of numbers from the previous Englishpublications, were mostly due to those who made

additions not recognising the principles of arrange-ment. Such principles may be arbitrary, but yetthey must be kept up, or else a corpus would becomeso confused that identification of forms would bedifficult.

The principles which must be observed in alladditions to the corpus are as follow :

    I. The forms are chiefly classed from the mostopen, such as shallow saucers, to the most closed, such as bottles. In carrying this out, the bowls areclassed by the slope of the edge,-the most open, the most sloping, the almost upright, the verticaland the different degrees of incurving. Anothercriterion is the proportion of height to width ; somelarge classes of vases are divided into those underor over certain proportions. In some cases obviousinversions of order occur, because some types con-tinue to vary to a great extent, and after tracing outtha t line, a turning back to some other type has tobe made. The indefinite variation over so large anumber of features, makes any single-line ordernecessarily illogical. All that can be hoped for isto arrange the types so that they can be searchedfor in the shortest time. In all additions the prin-ciple of arrangement must first be observed beforeinserting a new form.

    2. Another confusion has been caused by notnoticing what is included in an established class, such as the black polished pottery in F class. Ad-ditions to this have been made into a new class, but are here restored to F.

    3. A needless multiplication of new types hasbeen made, when the differences from establishedtypes were but slight or imperceptible. Variationsshould be ignored when they are within the chancesof copying; the two sides of a jar often differperceptibly, and such slight differences are im-material. Strictly, no vase is perfectly likeanother, and we must put together all those which

    6/68

6 THE CORPUS OF PRE ~ IST ORIC POTTERYmay reasonably have been intended to be alike. To separate them detracts from ihe value of theranges of types in date.

    4. Additions should be spaccd apart in the letter-ing, not as a b c d but as c, g, m, r , so as to allow ofintermediate forms being inserted. Of course varia-tions closely alike may have consecutive letters. The lettering should follow the natural order offorms, as near as may be.

5 . Differences of size and of material may belargely ignored. I t is usual to find vases of the sameform of various sizes, and even in different material, yet contemporary, as in B, P, and R.

The system of the corpus follows the classificationin " Naqada " into nine classes, as no more dis-tinctive method has appeared. The first object ofall divisions must be the most rapid identificationof a form, and the existing classes provide for that. The class of Late refers to distinctive styles of pottery, hard and thin, or else to the long jars sometimesbrown and soft, in any case distinct from the previousclasses. At the top right of each figure is the typenumber and letter. At the bottom left is the refet-ence to the source, those without reference beingfrom the Naqada corpus. At the bottom right isthe sequence date of the reference. The worksreferred to are as follow :Ab. Petrie, Abydos, I.

THE CORPUS OF SLATE PALETTESTHE lates of slates in Naqada were merely a

catalogue of the forms found, without framinga regular corpus or excluding duplicate forms.Since that was issued many more forms have beenregistered, and some unification of the whole isnecessary. The present corpus includes all thetypes that have been published in recent works. The references are :Plain numbers, Naqadeh graves.A. El Amrah, and cemeteries b, c.C.A.I. Cemeteries of Abydos I .D. Dios+olis.F. Firth, A . S. of Arubia.G.W. Gerzeh, Wainwright.M . Mahasna, Ayrton and Loat.N. Naqadu ; with B or T, cemeteries.

    R. Reisner, A.S. of Nubia.T. Tavkhan.T. 11. Tarkmhan I.U. Hu (Diospolis) references, not drawn sepa-

rately.W.G. Wainwright, Gerzeh. The top right number and letter is the type. Thebottom left reference is the source, according to theletters just stated. The figures at the bottom rightare the Sequence Dates ; where several are knownfor a type, the earliest and latest are quoted, andthe best defined are selected. The inclusion of somany new forms has made it necessary to adopt freshnumbers for this final e w p u s , mostly rather differentfrom the mere catalogue numbers used in Naqada.

THE REGISTERSON pl. xl are given the cor$us equivalents of the

numbers used by Dr. Reisner in the first volume ofthe Archaeological Survey of Nubia, 1907-8 : thesewere abandoned in the succeedimg volumes: alsothe alterations which have proved to be necessaryin unifying all the cov$us numbers of many publica-tions. All these registers are needed when referringto previous works.

On pl. lxi is a list of the pottery types in UniversityCollege, with reference to their sources when known :D, Diospolis; Gerz., Gerzeh ; N, Naqada, with

number of grave. Also a list of the sources of thetype drawings of white Cross-lined pottery, withsequence dates when known; and the same forBlack-incised pottery. Below are references to a fewmore types, so far as they can be distinguished in thephotographs of Mahasna, by Ayrton and Loat, andfour copies of the unusual types. The curved sprayin 498 is unique ; the figures of women with a fringegirdle in IOO K are very rare ; the vase with animalsalong the length of it, is unique; and the hippo-potamus hunt is very rare, see type 5 m.
