News Update on Forthcoming Petrel Releases

2 | PETREL FLASH | FEBRUARY 2008

Petrel 2008.1 is nearing its commercial release data at the end of March. Many of you will be wondering what Petrel has in store for you and how you can meet

your 2008 Petrel sales targets. This article will highlight our release plans for the year and will give you tips on what to promote and where to find helpful support material.

Major selling points of Petrel 2008.1Petrel 2008.1 is on track, it will be released at the end of March, and will include the content originally planned and communicated. On the Hub you can find a wealth of material, including presentations and updates that will complement your marketing efforts. As we progress ever closer to the release date, expect to find videos and updated marketing materials as well to assist you with your pre-sales efforts.

This release will have no new modules; however, we have implemented several tempting enhancements that make Petrel an all-in-one solution for visualization and exploration. Not only will Petrel geophysics continue to dominate the market in development workflows, it will also provide exploration capabilities that will make it much more appealing to customers and broaden your target market. One such development is the Geobodies inclusion to the volume rendering and extraction module. You may be aware that only ¼ of seismic interpreters have this module. This is a great opportunity for you to show your clients the benefits this technology brings!

Reservoir Engineering has been significantly expanded, to include sector modeling, completion modeling and support for compositional fluids. These developments will significantly increase the number of overall RE workflows that can be completed wholly within Petrel, further

minimizing the requirement to use ECLIPSE Office. It is also worth mentioning that Reservoir Engineering is the fastest growing domain, and newcomers to the industry are not interested in learning keywords, they want a modern interface, such as Petrel. These expanded RE workflows are very timely.

Looking aheadA key consideration for you to start planning for involves the Microsoft Vista 64-bit operating system. As you all know, changing operating system is no easy task. Before the end of the year Petrel will add support for Vista 64 – this is very good news for geophysical workflows and geological modeling as it provides for increased scalability; however, you need to start preparing your clients for this change, as a migration will not happen overnight.

For you, the Schlumberger Vista 64-bit standard image will be available from April; I would therefore urge you to install Vista on your laptop, get accustomed to it and start using it in your demos.

Insight into Petrel 2009.1Development work on Petrel 2009.1 started last year and is going on smoothly. The release is planned for mid-October this year, it will include the Vista 64-bit scalability and will focus on geophysics: synthetics, fault interpretation, and velocity modeling. These developments will dramatically improve and expand Petrel’s capabilities, whilst keeping in mind usability – more efficient workflows and easily accessible menus will improve the user experience.

Not only will Petrel geophysics continue to dominate the market in the development workflow, it will also provide exploration capabilities.

It’s all about collaborationCollaboration is at the heart of an optimal discovery and recovery of resources. Different teams, domain experts and locations need to collaborate more to share knowledge and intelligence. The market has been asking for a powerful database that would enable geoscientists to data sharing while supporting openness.

Our response to this is the Petrel Database Extension (DBX), which will store and transfer between Petrel and a Seabed database. Late in 2008, we plan a Client Technology Preview of Petrel with a database extension, to show what we are moving towards. We are aware that there are new databases emerging on the market, however, our solution will better match Petrel’s established behavior and needs, and will be worth waiting for it! An FAQ page on the Hub explains what DBX has to offer, why it is better than the competition and how to position it.

More power to petrotechnical professionalsMore good news for you and your clients is Schlumberger’s acquisition of exclusive distribution rights to the oil and gas sector for the MetaCarta map-based geographic information. We are actively working on a connection to MetaCarta from Petrel for our users.

Using Natural Language Processing (NLP) to identify text within a document that could refer to geographic locations, MetaCarta gives users access to unstructured content, allowing them to rapidly incorporate all available information that is relevant to their project. Along with the Petrel 2009.1 release itself, this connection to MetaCarta will be the only other Tier 1 marketing

plan. So I encourage you to become familiar with MetaCarta right away.

We have a great year ahead of us; it will be challenging to continue growing the industry’s most commercially successful product at the pace we have enjoyed thus far, but we must continue to do our utmost to show our customers the advantages Petrel can bring.

Russ Sagert,Petrel Portfolio Manager

The Petrel Database Extension (DBX) will better match Petrel’s established behavior and needs.

Easy wiggles and color scale adjustments

Article provided byGaston Bejarano

In the previous issue of Petrel

Flash I gave you my first tip on how to get a synthetics seismogram in

the middle of the reference section. This time round I am going to share how to get wiggles and make color scale adjustments. It is common knowledge that interpreters love wiggles, as they believe that wiggles are the pure essence of the seismic trace; they recognize every single feature on the data by simply looking at wiggles.

To display wiggles, you need to adjust the settings of the

tracks where the seismic data and the synthetic

seismogram are displayed. Wiggles are scaled somewhat differently from color-image displays, therefore the gain on the wiggles needs to be fine-tuned, to get a balanced display.

This is how to do it:

1. Double-click on the specific tracks using MB-1. The settings dialog (shown left) will be displayed

2. Edit the settings as illustrated left. Select Show wiggles and Manual gain. Click Apply after implementing the change.

3. For a synthetics track you may want to reduce to one or two the number of duplicated traces, playing with the gain until you obtain a comparable display.

4. Repeat the steps for all three tracks and you should get an image such as the one displayed left.

Interactive Facies Modeling

T he interactive facies modeling approach allows you to create or edit discrete

3D properties interactively and directly on the model. You can use it almost like

a drawing tool, choosing among various drawing styles, such as pencil, brush or airbrush, and filling the facies directly into the 3D grid.

Use this workflow to create the following:

• Complex facies models, using a combination of geostatistical algorithms and drawing facies interactively (typically for carbonates)

• Sector models that can be later isolated for petrophysical modeling or simulation

• Area models to be used in the volume calculation

What to do:

1. Use an existing discrete property, or generate a simple one, using the calculator (area = 1)

2. Activate the Facies modeling process; the icons shown below are displayed.

Cross-plotting two surfaces

How to cross-plot two surfaces and draw a polygon (filter) is a question I often get asked.

There are various methods worth trying. One such methods is to plot any surfaces against each other in

a function window; however, if you want to use the filter, the values have to be used as attributes. To transform a surface into an attribute of another, right-mouse click on the surface and select Copy as surface attribute (as shown right). Now go to your other surface and use the right-mouse-button to Paste as surface attribute.

Select the attributes as X and Y in a cross plot and create a filter.

Now you can use the filter on other attributes, or in the calculator.

Hint: Use the Blue arrow to push the filter into the calculator (as illustrated right).

The image below provides an example of making a binary property in the calculator and using it to filter in 3D with opacity.

MAR 2007The majority of us has at least once completed a Sudoku puzzle (shown right). For those who have never tried,

Sudoku is an addictive logic-based number placement puzzle, where the objective is to fill a 9 x 9 grid, so that each column, each row and each of the nine 3 x 3 boxes contain

The unlimited solutions offered by Petrel

But how many of you have felt the utter frustration of being unable to solve that “Expert” puzzle? Well, you may be pleased to know that Petrel Workflows have the solution for those tricky puzzles!

Here is how to do it:

1. Load the puzzle from an ASCII tab-delimited file into a Petrel spreadsheet, and translate it into a pointset (as shown below).

Some facts about Sudoku

The predecessor of

the Sudoku puzzle was developed in the 18th century by

Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler. In the late 1970s, Dell Magazines started

publishing their puzzles using Euler’s concept with a 9 x 9 square grid. In the mid-1980s Japanese puzzle company

Nikoli distributed a version of the puzzle, calling it Sudoku, which

became very popular in Japan.

the digits from 1 to 9 only once in each.

Solving a Sudoku puzzle can be therapeutic, particularly when you smoothly manage to fill in those grids.

Figure 5 - Results after second refinement

2. Then for each point in the Sudoku grid, a workflow determines the numbers that have been solved (red), those which are considered “illegal” according to the Sudoku rules (yellow) and the possible numbers (gray). This results in the representation shown right: 9 x 9 x 9 points.

The solution is determined by iterating over the 3 x 3 box regions and each Sudoku grid cell for legal and unique numbers.

With more challenging puzzles, the Petrel workflow will need more iterations. The puzzle to the right was solved in 4 minutes on a Dell M90 using Petrel 2007.1.2. The surface shows a graphical representation of the solution (just because it looks artistic).

The Petrel Sudoku Solver is a perfect example of the extreme flexibility Petrel offers.

Development Strategies in the Workflow Editor

In this article I will highlight the powerful capabilities of the Development strategy process and its

use in the workflow editor. Here follow two examples where development strategies are used to modify and edit automatically existing

development strategies. My workflows illustrate only some of the capabilities available, and you may well find other applications. For more details and a Petrel project with data and workflows, see InTouch content 4385599.

Workflow 2: Well open at variable dateThis workflow uses numeric variables in the Development strategy. The start and end dates of the simulation are provided by the user. The startup time of the second well is changed for each iteration in the loop. In this particular case the well is shifted in time by three months for each iteration.

Workflow 1: Shift start time of simulation runThis workflow uses numeric variables in the Development strategy. The start date and run time are specified, and the relevant dates are updated accordingly

in the Development strategy process. This functionality replaces the ‘Time symbols’ utility in Petrel 2004 and Petrel 2005, and it is somewhat equivalent to the time framework used in the Schedule application.

Light and Shadows in PetrelSome simple hints to help you with

these tricky features.

Using the Solsikke data set (Norwegian North Sea), I will start with an auto-tracked horizon, displayed below, using the standard display parameters for the horizon. I have used the “Cell box” style with low resolution (Figure 1, above right).

We now use these data points to create a surface. As we want to see geological features in detail, we choose the same resolution as the original seismic survey bin, giving rise to a surface with almost 2 million nodes. The resulting surface is displayed right (Figure 2). Note how interesting fault features are beginning to appear; however, the image is not very detailed.

Playing with light and shadows in the Petrel 3D window can be tricky. There are plenty of possibilities

available, but they are hidden deep in the background – which is a pity, since there are a lot of interpreters who like to use these features to highlight subtle stratigraphic elements in their data. In this issue of Petrel Flash I will give you some hints and tips on how to use what is available in Petrel.

Now we need to change some of the display parameters, both for the surface and the light sources, adjusting them carefully until we get a better display.

The first thing to do is ensure that the surface is displayed without contours and with a maximum of resolution. In the settings for the surface, we need to set the resolution to High and select the Bright plastic option (as shown in Figure 3, right).

Next, we adjust the light source parameters. These can be found in the Windows tab. As shown above right, there is a folder called “Light sources” - By default, the folder contains only the headlight. Using the MB-3 on the Light sources folder, insert a new light source.

Adjusting the lightTo adjust the light, follow the steps below.

• Turn off the Headlight and turn on the new Light source• Open the Settings for the new Light source• Change the option to “Point light”. Leave intensity to maximum (doesn’t cost more electricity!)• Move the 3D scene until you view the horizon almost horizontal to your eyes (Figure 4, left)

Figure 3 - Display settings for the surface

Remember: We want to highlight some faults, so this will determine in which direction the light will be projected. Once you have the correct angle position and direction, click on the “Move light” button. This will reposition the Light source “in front of you”, so to speak.

(Note that you may only see just a grey image now, this is because the light spot is in front of you. Don’t panic, when you move the 3D scene again, you will be able to visualize all your data.)

Figure 4 - Angle of view This image shows the angle of view where the Light source is going to be placed when the “Move light” button is applied. It also shows the settings for that light object.

Interactive moving of the light source Once you have positioned the light source, you also can move it interactively and edit it. When the light source is active, the Edit option becomes available on the object via the MB-3 button. This posts a small widget in the 3D view, where the light source is found. Be careful not to lose it, since it is small!

With the pointer option active (Shortcut key “P”), you can grab this light and carefully move it. While you do so, you should notice how the illumination changes in the scene.

By playing around with the angle, intensity and the other options, you can get quite an amazing display (see Figure 5, below).

Creating a new check shot attribute for easy color-coding

This tip will help you make a new attribute with a unique value for each well in the well filter. An attribute like this can

be used to color-code points in a cross plot.

1. Consider the check shots shown right.

2. Build a workflow like the one shown below (color-coded to match the check shot tree).

3. The “Set visible” and “Set invisible” commands control the filter applied to each calculator operation (see right).

4. Select a discrete property template, such as Well index (it may not have your project’s well color).

For the nerds :-), the workflow shown on the previous page can be generalized to the workflow shown below).

This has two advantages:

• You only have to drop in 1 subject to execute on a different check shot

• The well filter reference is automatically set from the check shot, which ensures consistency between the filter and the operand

Portrait of the Employee of the Month

Born in Austin and bred in Brownsville, Texas, Cassie gained a Bachelors degree in Geological Engineering at Cornell University in 2001. After graduating she

joined Schlumberger and, seven years on, she has a great deal of experience under her belt and a bright future ahead

Steep learning curveBroadly speaking, in her role of Lead Tester for Petrel Core & Modeling, Cassie identifies the most appropriate implementation approach for a test, sets up and executes the tests. She is also 3rd line support for InTouch and participates in technical reviews for new functionality in Petrel. “What we do in Commercialization is very important for the success of the product; our efforts are geared towards delivering a high-quality product.”Getting a quality release out is challenging, but when you are trying to achieve this in a large team, collaborating over 7 locations worldwide, is no easy task.“What I really like about my job is the opportunity to influence how the product will look like. For instance, during Formal Technical Reviews I can raise concerns, give my input; or if I find a bug while testing, I can give my advice on how to improve the development. So, when the release is out, I feel proud and pleased with myself for having contributed to the end product.”

A world of opportunities“I really like working for Schlumberger. It’s a great company that offers a lot of good opportunities and promotes mobility. I was (and still am) very pleased to be given the chance to move to Oslo. It’s fantastic to work with such talented people – I have a lot of respect for my colleagues.”

A tip and a plea...“My tip is to use filters more. Last year I spent a lot of time working with filters. They are new and people don’t know how to make the most of them. Filters have a lot of potential in data analysis and visualization and should be used more!”

“My plea concerns Swift. I advise people to query Swift more, as they can get a lot of help from it. And, if submitting issues, they must not forget to provide as much detail as possible. No details, no solution!”

Life outside the office“I work long hours and in my spare time I try to explore Oslo, go to lots of concerts and shows. In the Commercialization team we always have guest testers; we really appreciate their efforts – their work in invaluable and we must ensure that our appreciation is conveyed, by making them feel welcome, showing them around Oslo.”

C ongratulations to Izzet Arslan from ADCO for winning the Petrel 2007.1

Pane Configuration contest. Izzet’s design (below) was based on how much the pane itself is used/viewed in modeling. He took into consideration the most clicked panes and selected Input, Models and Processes. He then put each pane in an individual column view. As toolbars change for each process highlighted, he put the pane Processes to the far left. The Windows pane is the next most clicked one, therefore it deserves at least

half a column, whilst the other half is shared with Cases and Workflows. Izzet kept the Results and Templates pane behind the Input page, since they are rarely viewed.

Izzet wins:• Petrel buff• 2GB flash drive• Petrel 2007 shortcut mouse pad• Award Certificate

Well done, Izzet!
