News of the month – Petrel 2007.1 Seismic Datasets handling

In our October 2006 Newsletter we provided preliminary System recommendations for Petrel 2007. In this issue, we would like to focus on these systems in relation to seismic data handling. Seismic data handling has undergone a major upgrade in Petrel 2007.1 with much of it being rewritten. This significantly increases the size of seismic volumes that it is possible to work with in Petrel. The new software architecture takes advantage of recent hardware advances (pc’s with multi-cores and multi-cpu’s) to enable interpretation and visualization of seismic volumes nearing 60GB in size. Users with more moderate size seismic volumes can continue to use their current hardware.

For those dealing with extremely large seismic volumes (>60 GB to over 1 TB), Petrel 2007.1 also introduces the Petrel Seismic Server. This new capability will allow you to use a hardware cluster as a backend processor for compute intensive operations such as attribute generation and autotracking. You will be able to store and process huge seismic volumes on a server and access them through the standard Petrel seismic interpretation interface. This not only provides huge time savings, but has the added benefit of allowing an entire asset team to share access to the data and interpretation.

The configuration of the Seismic Server Cluster will depend on the size of your seismic data volume. Please contact your local SLB representative to help design the right configuration for your needs.

Petrel seismic standalone = Nearing 60 GB of seismic

Petrel seismic server = more than 60 GB and over 1TB (up to the number of nodes

available in the cluster)

1 - In the "Autotracking" settings for a Seismic Interpretation object change the "Expansion Quality" to "None". 2 - Make sure the Seed-point settings are set to "Visible Points" and also that the "Override/Locking" toggle is set to on (you want to override your original picks). 3 - You need to define which type of feature you want to snap on (Peaks, Troughs, S-crossing,...). The two images below show an example of resnapping from Zero-crossing to Peaks. Make a copy of your original horizon if you want, but you can always "Undo" the operation if the snapping does not produce perfect results, in which case you need to adjust the Value constraints - this depends on the data.

Gaston Bejarano, our Petrel Seismic Advisor, has written this tip ☺

Highlight of the Month – How to edit seismic interpretation?

The image below describes few tips and related icons to help you editing your existing seismic interpretation in a 3D window. Most of these icons work as well for 2D and Interpretation windows.
