Petra was known as a busy trade center in ancient history, at around 2000

years back. It was a commercial trade point lying between Gaza, Basra,

Damascus, Aqaba, and it served as a busy route for doing international

trading of China’s silk, Indian spice, and Arabian incense. Later on this trade

city became the capital city in Nabataean reign and during Roman reign the

city reached at its peak of prosperity.

According to history, a massive earthquake worked as the catastrophe

against the growing prosperity of the city of Petra. The buildings suffered

from mass destruction and the plumbing system turned into wreckage.

Nooption was left for the habitants of Petra other than to leave the place.

Once it was the crowning glory of the Arab Empire gradually became a lost

The Nabateans made immense profit for their integrationof the trade routes

at Petra and at its peak time at least 20,000-30,000 people were residing at

this trade city. However, commerce became less profitable to the Nabateans

with the change of trade routes to Palmyra in Syria and the extension of

seaborne occupation in and around the Arabian Peninsula. Sometime maybe

during the fourth century CE, the Nabateans abandoned their capital at

Petra. No one could really guess the reason. The ultimate secret of Jordan’s

lost city is still an enigma for historians.
