This Chihuahua puppy literally wears its heart on its sleeve.

The cute male pooch, born with a perfect heart-shaped patch on its side, has been suitably named Heartkun by its owner in northern Japan.

The one-and-a-half-month old pup was born as one of a big litter, but is the only new arrival to sport such a heart-warming coat.

Joseph & Denise Gilbert along with their children Elizabeth and Stephen

and Denise’s mom Joan Tinelli started Barking Buddy kennels to utilize the former dairy barn on the Gilbert’s property. Joan suggested several times that we try running a dog board-ing kennel. Joe & I thought it a crazy idea at fi rst but fi nally decided to run with it. People told us it would be hard work, which it is, but in the same respect very rewarding. Th is is a family run business and each dog and their owners become like part of our family.

Our main goal is to take care of the dogs as if they were our own. We want our customers to feel comfortable leaving their dogs with us.

Every day is diff erent and there’s always a diff erent mix of dogs in the kennel. Just keeping up on who’s coming in or going home and remembering how to make the dogs feel at home. Each one is unique and comforted by the personal touch our hands on kennel off ers.

Th e most rewarding things is when the dogs accept us with their love in the form of licks and wagging tails!

A very important thing to consider when choosing a kennel is how clean it is. Ask to see the whole facility so that you can determine if the kennel off ers your dog enough space. Make sure the kennel staff interacts well with your pets and are will-ing to give them the same special attention that you do. Will they have human contact while being boarded, how often are they let out, and what are their vaccination requirements?

We have a black Lab Sadie and an American Eskimo Sophie. We have had other dogs over the years and at one point we had four at once. Also, we have an easy going cat, Rocky whom we took in after he boarded with us. He likes Barking Buddy Kennels but he’s hoping to fi nd a forever home with someone.

We set about to build a diff erent kind of kennel. We installed radiant fl oor heat to provide a warm comfortable place for the dogs to lay. Th e privacy panels between each kennel pro-vide a den-like space which is less stressful for the dogs and makes them easy to clean. Many customers comment on how clean our facility smells and even ask if their pet received a bath because they go home smelling so nice. Baths are done by request only so most times we must admit a bath wasn’t given it’s just due to the cleaning/disinfecting soap we use. A ventilation system over head delivers fresh air to each ken-

nel. Our no direct outside access from each kennel allows us to have hands on contact with each dog. Th ey are let out individually into one of two fenced in yards off the back side four to six times each day. Music is played 24 seven but it is lights out at bedtime. We do require proof of current Rabies and Bordetella on vet letter head.

We hope because we’ve built the type of kennel that we want our dogs to stay in, that people will give us a chance. We enjoyed having the opportunity to care for Max, CED of Petpalooza when he needed a place to stay. We have no set drop off or pickup hours which allows more fl exibility. We off er Sunday pick up/drop off s usually starting at Noon.

Evening hours allow for quicker re-unions upon your return or more time at home with them before dropping them off . Your dogs will get lots of hugs & kisses and we try and go the extra mile to make sure they enjoy their stay with us. Joe always says “It’s a good thing we can’t keep every dog we fall in love with.”

The bitter cold weather has arrived

in the Rochester area and with that comes weather related safety concern for our pets. First and foremost are the tem-peratures in the evening and the pets that are outside. Ensure your pet has cover and plenty of fresh unfrozen water.

Keep your dogs on a leash during the winter months. With the snow and ice your pets can lose their scent and become lost. Be sure your pets have proper id and you should have a recent photo in case your pet becomes lost.

Thoroughly wipe your pet’s feet off when they come in from being outside. Your pets can ingest the salt, antifreeze and other dangerous chemicals while licking their paws.

Keep your dog’s coat longer in the winter months to provide more warmth. When giving a bath dur-ing the winter months make sure they are com-pletely dry before letting them outside or taking them for a walk. You should consider a sweater or jacket for short hair dogs.

As in the summer months do not leave your pet in the car unattended. The interior temperature of the car will become much cooler and can act as a refrigerator in the winter months.

If your pet likes the colder weather and spends longer periods of time outside they will burn more calories. Increase their food intake during the win-ter months.

Keep your pet warm and safe this winter with a nice cozy place to sleep.

Training Tip: Whenever you enter or exit your home, always have your dog sit and wait for you to pass through the threshold fi rst. This tip will assist you in ensuring that your dog will not bolt out the door causing you to slip on the icy stairs or side walk.

Starting the New Year Right!

It’s the start of a new year and a great time to start making healthy choices for your pets.

At Pet$aver Healthy Pet Superstore all of our associates are trained in pet nutrition and will help you pick out the best food and supplies for

your pets’ needs. Pet$aver recom-mends feeding your pets only natural and holistic foods made from the

highest quality ingredients because such food helps them live long, happy, and healthy lives. Th e foods we recommend contain actual meat, not animal or meat by-products and no corn, wheat, or soy fi llers. Meat by-products and fi llers can be harm-ful to a pet’s health, contributing to digestive problems, allergies and other health issues

To keep your pets healthy, it is also important to keep them ac-tive. People say that, if your pet is

overweight, then neither of you are getting enough exercise! Be sure that your pet is getting plenty of exercise, both mentally and physically. Run-ning, walking, and playing fetch or other games with your dog each day can greatly improve your dog’s quality and length of life and yours, too! For cats, entertaining them with toys will not only help them to stay active, it also distracts them and tires them out, making them less likely to scratch and bite.

How you care for your pets di-rectly aff ects the quality and length of their lives. Please come in to Pet$aver today to learn how we can help you to make a positive impact on your pets’ health and happiness!

Pet Wisdom with Russ Herman General Manager

Editor’s note: Th is issue’s Pet Wisdom was penned by Rebecca Berent Fien

Q: Do birds chew their food?

A: Yes, depending on one’s defi nition of “chew.”

Birds don’t have teeth, so they don’t chew with their bills. However, many species “chew” food in a second, muscular stomach, also called a gizzard. Food starts in the fi rst or true stomach. Tough food is passed to the second stomach, the gizzard. The gizzard can grind the food and pass it back to the true stomach and vice versa.

Many birds fi ll their gizzards with small grit, stones, or gravel which serve the same function as teeth -- breaking down (chewing) hard food and thus helping digestion.

Gizzards have a tough inner membrane made of the protein keratin. That layer is surrounded by a muscular pouch which provides the grinding action.

Education is Key!When it comes to selecting a pet for yourself or your family, nothing is more important than research. Regardless of what kind of pet you’re looking for, whether it be a dog, a

lizard or a bird, the key to having a happy, healthy, life-long companion is doing an adequate amount of research and preparation before making the long-term commitment of pet ownership. Taking the proper preliminary steps to assure you’re choosing the companion animal that is right for you can eliminate a lot of unnecessary stress, frustration and heartache for you and your pet in the future.

That being said, that’s why here at Birds Unlimited, we pride ourselves on being educated on the various species of birds we have here in our store. In trying to identify what species of bird may be a good fi t, we will discuss the individuals living

environment and what limitations/challenges that may pose. We will discuss the required care and up keep of the particular bird in question as well as temperament, life span, training with positive reinforcement and other things of that nature. When it comes time for someone to bring their bird home with them, we go over and send them home with all the necessary information printed out to try and make the transition as smooth as possible.

The staff at the store has a high level of interest in anything having to do with birds and has even gone the extra mile to become certifi ed in aviculture through the AFA (American Federation of Aviculture). With this level of motivation to continue to learn and advance ourselves in this practice, we can feel assured that we’re helping our customers make the best decision when selecting a bird as a pet. With the hands on experience that we continue to gain with our own birds and through our educational endeavors we feel confi dent that we can provide a reliable resource of information for our customers throughout the life of their bird.

This Year’s Resolution—Banish the bulge. If your dog is overweight, resolve to begin a sensible eating program. A study by the Association of Pet Obesity Prevention shows that 45 percent of dogs are overweight, including 9 percent who are obese. Cut down on the amount of food you feed, especially the packaged snacks. Most commercial treats contain too much fat, sugar, andunnecessary calories. If you must give your dog a goody, add somecut-up pieces of fruit or steamed veggies to the food bowl.(But make sure to stay away from grapes, raisins, avocados, and onions, as they can be toxic to pets.)And, of course get outside and have some fun!

2012 came to a close there were so many things that happened… most of which were tragic (including children and pets). So with the start of the New Year we all have plans to change our lives in some way or another. All of these plans include our families both two and four legged. A very popular resolution is to get healthier our pets should be part of this resolution as well. Achieving this resolution for our “fur kids” is not hard or expensive. First, start with their diet. If your “fur kid” is eating a food that is loaded with wheat, corn, soy and by products you are feeding them a diet that is equal

to feeding your pet a diet that is equal to you eating fast food every day. Th e second thing that we can do for them is to give them more exercise… the more they walk the more you walk. Th row a ball for them, or play with a cat toy in the house. Finally (and the easiest thing to do) with our pets would be to… simply relax and enjoy the peace and serenity that our “fur kids” give to us, feeling stressed?? Sit quietly pet your “fur kid”, it is a proven fact that just by petting a pet we lower our blood pressure.

Still not sure what your new year will bring?? Th en let us off er a couple of more ideas. Pay it forward… give back

to your community. Donate your time, energy, money, and compassion to some less fortunate people and animals in your community. Any and all shel-ters, rescue groups, and animal welfare groups need volunteers, caretakers, funding, and people to help build awareness for their cause. A lot of these groups will host special “rescue” events throughout the year. Go attend these events and give some of your time, en-ergy, and money to animals in need, as they will always give you unconditional love and compassion.

Let all of us make 2013 the year that we learn from our animal friends… and give back unconditionally!!

... a little humorA guy is driving in the country and he sees a sign in front of a house: “Talking Dog For Sale.” He rings the bell and the owner tells him the dog is in the backyard.

The guy goes into the backyard and sees a Labrador Retriever sitting there.

“You talk?” he asks. “Yep,” the Lab replies.

“So, what’s your story?”

The Lab looks up and says, “Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA about my gift, and in no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one fi gured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable

spies for eight years running.

“But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn’t getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security wandering near suspi-cious characters and listening in.

“I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals. I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I’m just retired.”

The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.

“Ten dollars,” the guy says.

“Ten dollars? This dog is amazing. Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?”

“Because he’s a gosh darn liar. He never did any of that stuff.”
