Page 2: Peterborough Real Ale Pub Guide

Welcome to the first edition of ourcity pubs guide produced by the Peterborough & District Branch ofthe Campaign for Real Ale.

Do we really need pubs? Well yes of coursewe do! The most practical reason is that you can only drink real alein pubs. Real ale requires the skills of the brewer to produce it and,the licensee to keep it in top condition in the pub cellar so that wecan enjoy it. If we lose our pubs, we lose our real ale. Simple asthat. Many have tried to emulate real ale in different forms but, noone can tell me that a well-kept pint of good tasting real ale can bebeaten by any of the draught beers on the market.

Since we produced our last guide twenty years ago we have lost agreat many pubs in our city. One particular road has only two pubswithin a two mile stretch, where only a few years ago there were adozen or more. From just over a hundred pubs or licensed premisesin the last guide that we produced, at least fifty have gone – manydemolished completely.

A number of factors are responsible for this, other forms of homeentertainment; we are more health conscious; less disposable moneyin our pockets; not to mention the excessive high rents and beerprices imposed by the pub owners. It still seems incredible that themain threat to pubs come from the pub companies and big brewers, the very people who should be protecting them.

Recent government legislation to restrict the heavy handed practices by the pub owning companies, will when fully implemented, ease the pressure on hapless licensees. They should be able to negotiate fairer market rents and get more freedom from the tie, tobe able to buy beer from the open market.

The government meantime have gone some way in reducing thecrippling duty tax on beer, albeit in a small way. Scrapping the hatedDuty Escalator three years ago went some way to prevent the ridiculousannual increase in beer prices. If this additional tax had been continued we would all be paying a pound or more extra for our pint!

If you are passionate about real ale, sign up to join CAMRA andhelp us continue the fight to protect this proud British institution.

Our thanks go to Mike Blakesley for producing this guide - no mean feat!.

Cheers

David Murray Branch Chairman

Peterborough and District CAMRA

What do we do?Peterborough and District Branch, like all CAMRA branches, are primarly concerned with the promotion of our national drink, realale. Over recent years the battle for real ale seems to have been wonwith over 1,000 breweries now active in the UK, however, pub cultureis constantly under threat so we now focus a large part of our campaigning on the promotion and protection of pubs in our area.

We do this in a number of ways including a social calendar of pubtrips and brewery visits open to all CAMRA and non-CAMRA members, cycle rides and regular meetings in real ale pubs across thecity and further afield. All our diary dates and events are listed on ourbranch web site: www.real-ale.org.uk.

We also produce a bi-monthly magazine, Beer around ‘Ere, containingbrewery and pub news and interesting articles on CAMRA campaigns. This is available free in most pubs in the area and can bedownloaded from the homepage of the branch website www.real-ale.org.uk.

One of the best known things wedo is hold the Peterborough BeerFestival on the Embankment everyAugust. This annual event is thelargest outdoor beer festival in theUK with over 350 ales and a hugerange of bottled beers, ciders, perries and wines. With tens ofthousands of visitors, putting on thisevent is a mammoth task and isentirely run by volunteers.

Being part of the festival is a fun and rewarding experience and weare always looking for help in setting up the site and running the bars.If you would be intereted in getting involved with the branch activi-ties, contact our Branch Secretary on 01733 574226 or [email protected].
