MASS TIMES

ST IGNATIUS Toowong: Weekdays 5.30pm every afternoon; Saturday 9.00am & 6.00pm (Vigil); Sunday 7.00am & 5.00pm.

Reconciliation: Saturday after 9.00am Mass and from 5.15pm to 5.45pm, or by appointment. HOLY SPIRIT Auchenflower: Weekdays 9.00am Monday, Wednesday & Friday; Sunday 8.30am.

The gospel reading records Simon Peter’s

profession of faith in Jesus as “the Christ, the Son

of the living God”. In response Jesus affirms and

commissions Peter: “You are Peter and on this

rock I will build my Church.”

In the section of the gospel that follows directly from this exchange, but

which is not read today, Matthew counterbalances the image of

foundation stone with that of stumbling block. It is a pity that we never

hear the interplay of these two images on any Sunday or feast day. At

best we hear them separately on successive Sundays.

As it stands the passage that we hear is prone to a one-sided

interpretation in support of Petrine authority in the church. This will

make much of the divine authority entrusted to Peter and / or to the

church: “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven”. Those

familiar with the gospel as a whole will be aware of other stories that

shed a different light on Peter. They reveal him as a flawed leader. His

impulsive response to Jesus’ call to walk to him across the water is a

case in point.

But today the focus is on Peter’s faith, his courage, and his foundational

rose in the church; and on our own answer to Jesus’ question, “Who do

you say I am?”

Break Open the Word.

"Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults Prevention and Protection Policy"

The Archdiocese of Brisbane has produced a new policy which supersedes the previous Archdiocesan child safety policy and sets out best practice in prevention of harm to and protection of children, young people and vulnerable adults. It is essential that this policy be incorporated into parish practices as quickly as possible. To this end a training and information session will be held for all Clergy, all paid parish staff and all key parish volunteers across Brisbane West Deanery. Volunteers would include: Sacramental Co-ordinators, Sacramental Leaders, ‘Children's Liturgy’ Leaders, Sacristans (if they have contact with children), Altar Server Trainers, Choir / Music Leaders (if they look after children's/ young people's music ministry), Care & Concern members who visit vulnerable people in their homes, Communion to the Sick ministers who visit homes, or any other role that involves working closely with children, young people or vulnerable adults. You are asked to attend the training session conducted by Michelle Vuleta (Archdiocesan Safeguarding Children Officer) on Monday 30 June, 9am—12.30pm at Twelve Apostles Hall, 111 Yallambee Rd, Jindalee. A 2nd opportunity for training will be provided at a later date.

OUR MISSION PRAYER

We, the St Ignatius community, are called to live the good news. We pray that we become the people that Jesus Christ called us to be. We pray that we know the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit

through knowing Jesus in prayer, scripture and liturgy. We pray that we give hope to others by a practical, personal kindness, affirming each person's dignity, worth and destiny in Christ. May we live out this mission of our Christian vocation in the spirit of St. Ignatius.
