Out with the old and in with the new! Yes it’s goodbye to a tattered and frayed 2014 and welcome to the brand new, smart 2015

that’s still in its cellophane wrapping.

Th ere are many New Year’s traditions around the globe that involve clothing; in the Philippines for example the wearing of polka dots and the eating of round fruits is

supposed to ensure a prosperous New Year while in Sao Paulo the men don brightly coloured underpants – red if they are looking for love and yellow for money!

Whilst these traditions are not adhered to in Britain I can guarantee admiring glances when wearing red moleskin trousers and money will be saved by purchasing two pairs of mustard yellow cords! I’d also like to start a few New Year clothing traditions of my own;

Fairisle pullovers for a couple of uninterrupted hours to read the paper every Sunday and a checked Tattersall shirt for a slow growing lawn! - I can hope!

Shirts, like histories, are more interesting when they're chequered. But chequers - or checks - is a blanket term that's worth delving under. Take tartans for instance. Th e material dates back hundreds, maybe thousands of years, yet specifi c clan tartans were a 19th century invention - and a partially English one at that*. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were so keen on all things Caledonian that they designed their own tartans. Hers was the 'Victoria' (hint of egotism there, m'am), his the 'Balmoral'. Th ese were made into highland dress and worn by the long-suff ering royal children. Too much of a good thing? Th e future Edward VII thought so and preferred the 'window pane' or 'Prince of Wales check' - his tailor hinted that it had a slimming eff ect.

Fast forward two generations and another heir to the throne was doing his bit for checks. Th is time it was

Edward - of Edward and Mrs Simpson fame - who took a shine to Argyll patterns. Argyll sweaters, Argyll socks, Argyll shirts - he couldn't get enough of 'em and they became de rigueur whether potting grouse or playing golf (pronounced 'goff ' don't y'know).

Th at's the thing about checks. Once they start, people really get weaving. Hence houndstooth, borrowed from hacking jackets and Tattersall - named aft er the eponymous horse market. Th en there's 'genggang'. Not the beginning of a meaningless Boy Scouts' song, it's a Malay word from which we derived gingham.

Finally, a hint from Lord Trousers. “Remember, the louder the shirt the quieter

the tie. Stripes and polka dots against checks can cause a 'do not adjust your set' dazzle. Stick to plain coloured neck-wear. It's just a matter of checks and balances really.”

All UK orders are sent using tracked services, if we have your email address, we will send you a tracking number when the parcel is dispatched.
