It is easy to put off repentance because “there’s always time.” It is easy to think that we have “more important things to do” than to do the religious bit. First Sunday of Lent, March 1, 2020 Dear Parishioners,

As we gather on this first Sunday of March, the Church celebrates the First Sunday in our season of Lent. As we begin this penitential season, the Church draws our attention to two realities in our human nature, namely, tempta-tion and sin. We see in our first reading from the book of Genesis, the origin of sin in human nature. In this reading we hear the story of the creation of human persons, then placing these first humans in a garden called Eden, and then being told that they could have full access to the garden except they were not to eat of the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden. With this limitation, we find the serpent entering the scene, the serpent the symbol of evil, bringing now tempta-tion into the lives of these human persons. And it was too much for these newly created beings as they were tempted to go beyond themselves and become like gods. Thus temptation enters, lures them to be more than they were, and eventually would create sin, and thus begins the avalanche of evil in our once created world in which God saw everything and saw that it was good. With this sin, our world was turned upside down and since that first sin, we have been plagued with this tendency to sin in all of our lives. Our response to this reading is quite appropriate as we proclaim, “Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.” Each and every generation of human beings have entered the world with this tendency to sin, what the Church calls concupiscence, and thus we have original sin that will affect all generations from this day forward. And each time that we sin, we give our stamp of approval to this first sin. Yes, we sinned, have sinned, and will continue to sin. So the Church invites us to self-reflect and understand this tendency in our lives. If we look at what tempts us, we find our flaws and weaknesses in our human nature. But thanks be to God we have been saved by the life saving mysteries of Jesus. And so as we enter the season of Lent, let’s recognize our need of Jesus in our lives, in our failings, in our sins, and in our weaknesses. We cannot live without Him, nor the graces He gives to us in the sacraments. So let’s make use of these sacraments as we try to overcome our sins and temptations and draw ever closer to our Lord and His Church. To help us do that, we will be adding a special Mass each weekday at 6:30 p.m. along with Confessions being offered from 5:45-6:15, Monday through Friday. Please make use of this special time to draw ever closer to our Lord in the Sacraments. Also, if there are still books in the back entitled “Lenten Gospel Reflec-tions” by Bishop Robert Barron, I ask you to take them and use them as your spiritual reading during Lent. They are my gift to you. Hoping and praying that you have a very rewarding journey during Lent and make use of this time in an effort to draw closer to our Lord. Next weekend is what we call QND Commitment Weekend and we will hear some of our students from QND speaking at all of our Masses. Each of you received a letter from me and I ask you to support the only Catholic High School in the area. Place your QND support envelope in the collection next weekend or whenever. Thank you for your support.

Fr. Leo’s column continued

We’ve been asked to support and encourage our parishioners to respond to the 2020 census. This census is very important to our city of Quincy and our commu-nity of Adams County. Over $800 billion in federal government will be determined by this census count. This census will affect us in so many differing ways including how many representatives our state will send to Congress. So I am asking you to take seriously this civic responsibility and make sure that you and your household are counted in this 2020 census. For our married couples, I ask you to consider our new ministry entitled “Marriage Enrichment Gath-erings.” This is for couples who wish to strengthen their marriages by meeting and discussing various aspects of marriage. The first meeting of this ministry will be on Sunday, March 8 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria (below the church). Please see the bulletin for further details.\

Another important ministry for those who have lost loved ones is our Grief Support Group. They will be meeting beginning next week for a 4-week session at the rectory on Monday evenings from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Consult the bulletin for further details.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE: One Sunday after-noon several young boys in a rural Kansas parish invited their parish priest to go hunting pheasant. The boys, like most Kansas boys, were fairly good shots, but the poor padre didn’t down one bird. That evening, the father of one of the boys asked his son, “Is Father a good shot?” “Well, Dad,” replied the boy, “he’s a good shot alright but its almost unbelievable how the Lord protects those birds when he’s shooting.”
