History of PETA

• Founded in 1980 in Norfolk Virginia

• “Dedicated to establishing and defending rights of all animals.”

• The largest animal rights organization today.

How PETA Began

• Alex Pacheco investigated Institute for Biological Research in Silver Spring, Maryland

• Pacheco went to the police and began a 10 year battle about the abuse of the animals.

• PETA, founded by Alex Pacheco, help create the Animal Welfare Act of 1985

Ingrid Newkirk is the president of PETA.

• Currently 1.8 million members and supporters

• 187 employees

• Raises over $25 million dollars a year from supporters

• PETA insists that they do not support or go against either of the parties or candidates. They believe that PETA is a group for everybody and not specific people.

• In 2007 PETA’s total revenue was over 31 million dollars!

• 84.99% of the operating expenses went to programs that fight animal exploitations.

• 10.83% of the money was used on fundraising efforts.

• 4.18% was used on management and general operations.

• They are know for using very controversial campaigns that are in places that many people see.
