Feeding Guide for Dry FoodsWhen choosing to feed grain free dry foods we would alwaysrecommend mixing 60% dry food with 40% wet food for dietrotation.

Mixing dry food with wet food gives a variety of tastes combinedwith texture – texture in a kibble that is designed to helpmaintain healthy teeth and gums.

The quantities are only intended as a guide and should beadjusted to suit size, age and level of activity –see Fact RER page 68.

Changing food should be a gradual process, mixing with currentfood increasing daily until complete.

Feeding Guide for PuppiesPuppy feeding rates will vary in in accordance with size andbreed.

Small breed puppy can be fed up to 9 months before changing toadult food.

• High quality fish, poultry, rabbit, horse meat and wildboar are the best sources of amino acids that correspondwith the needs of dogs and cats. Proteins of good qualityare always of animal origin and are easily digestible.

• Plant proteins such as grains, starches and vegetablesare classified as 'incomplete proteins', being devoid of theessential amino acids Arginine, Taurine, Methionine, Lysineand Tryptophan, but contribute to fibre.

DIGESTIVE PROTEIN

Digestibility is crucial for the absorption of meat proteininto the blood stream. Plant proteins are considerably lessdigestible than animal proteins for the short digestive tractof dogs and cats. High levels of cereals (sorghum) lead toa significant reduction in the digestibility of proteins of upto 23% (as per clinical studies). Corn for example, doesnot contain Glycine, Lysine, Tryptophan and the lack ofthese amino acids reduces the protein quality in the food.

BIOLOGICAL VALUE OF PROTEIN

The biological value of a protein is a measure of thepercentage that can actually be used by the body. Thebest proteins are a rich mix of digestive amino acids witha high biological level.

Classification of protein on biological value: Eggs (whole)100%, Egg (white) 88%, Chicken/turkey 79%, Fish 70%,Whole rice 59%, Wheat 49%, Corn 36%.

CONCLUSION

Be aware of 'super premium' or 'holistic' pet foods thatcontain more than 40% of grain. These will not provideenough protein for cats and dogs to get the verybest nutrition from their food.It pays to read pet food labels.

There is so much truth in the saying, “you are what youeat,” but when we have the convenience of processedfoods there is a question as to the nutritional benefits andvalues against honest and healthy ingredients and what isright for you – or your pet!

As a pet food manufacturer we are very proud of ourproducts, taking care to provide good food withinformation. Anything is always better than nothing andpets will survive, but being aware of one very importantfactor - protein - holds the key to longterm good health.

THE FACT IS...because we care

There are three sources of energy in a diet: protein, fatand carbohydrates (CHO). The CHO are the first to betransformed into energy, which in abundance encouragesfat to be stored. Reducing the levels of CHO to meetenergy demands will allow fat and protein to take overand control metabolism. Quality food has a high metabolicenergy (ME) which defines the percentage of total energyretained in the body.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR PETS?

Profiles published by the Association of Feed ControlOfficials and the committee on animal nutrition for theNational Research Council states that dogs and cats haveno nutritional need for carbohydrates when replaced withhigher levels of protein.

Dogs and cats have not evolved to eat grain and/or digestit, nature tells us that, so why use it in their food? Proteinand fat are the building blocks for the body; they areimportant for all vital functions such as maintenance andadjustments of tissue, production of hormones, energyand storage of amino acids.

WHAT IS PROTEIN?

• Proteins are made up in chains of molecules all linkedtogether, and dogs, for example, require 22 different typesof amino acids – 12 are made naturally inside the dogsbody, and 10 come from food such as:

Arginine – stimulates the immune system • Histidine –releases histamine, which controls pain and helps bloodflow • Isoleucine and Leucine – regulate protein

Pet food labels have got to tell the truth, but designerpackaging adds to the distraction of the finer points ofwhat's in the bag. The convenience of processed pet foodis one way for busy, caring pet owners to make meal timeseasy. But understanding the basics of pet foodformulations is never straightforward and the use ofscientific words becomes confusing.

First rule: to highlight the main source of ingredients, petfood manufacturers must, by law, list the first five to seveningredients which carry the most weight in theformulations, followed by the lesser ingredients insequence. This makes it easy to determine what's in thebag!

Second rule: evaluate the quality and quantity in theformulations by asking what protein is present, is it animalor plant, and is it fit for human consumption?Fundamentally meat and its quality are key to goodnutrition - by-product meat and other by-productingredients are less desirable and consist of anything BUTthe finer cuts.

The FACT is...because we care

What is good? Quality protein from quality freshmeat is the best, where honest 'meat meal'becomes the dried end product of a process thatproduces a protein powder. Concentrating thewater content of fresh meat into a higherpercentage of protein makes the product morecaloric and concentrated. Fibre is specified byname – look for beet pulp, brown rice, barley, oats,fruits, sweet potato and peas, to name a few. WHY FISH OILS?

There's something 'fishy' about the balance betweenamounts of Omega 6 (vegetable oil) and Omega 3 (fish oil)in pet foods. Fatty acids are beneficial for inflammatoryconditions and other other health issues but it isimportant to get the right ratio between fish oils andvegetable oils.

mouth with 'protease', the enzyme generated in the saliva

by chewing*. This deals mainly with the breakdown of

carbohydrates in preparation for the food's arrival in the

*Chewing food for a dog is not always part of their table

manners, although cats have a little more finesse: with

serrated molars that act like scissors they cut meat rather

than chew it.

Well-chewed food lightens the load on the stomach ready

for the next digestive process to take over. At this point

the pancreas, as the main player in the digestive game,

releases 'amylase', the enzyme that continues to

breakdown carbohydrates into complex sugars, and

'lipase' that deals with fats to produce the 'proteases' for

digestive compounds to distribute protein into absorbable

usable molecules.

Normal gut flora produces 'cellulase' and 'proteases' but

its main job is to deal with the distribution of digestible

3 Location. Convenience and privacy are the two main points oflocation - ideally placed away from water and feeding bowls.

4 Training. Instincts will generally guide a cat to its litter tray,make it accessible, make it fun and leave the business to the cat!

5 Odour. Scented litter will mask odours but if you have a fussycat then keep an air freshener near the litter box.

6 Cleanliness. Cats like to be clean, a daily scoop is first on theagenda and litter changes, according to needs, followed by agood scrub with a delicate solution to maintain familiarity of itsterritory.

7 Depth of litter. Less is more, no more than two inches in depthis about all a cat will need and long haired cats prefer a smoothslick surface. Adding extra litter also adds a problem to cleaning.

8 Multi Litters. For peace and harmony, multi cats, multi littertrays stops queuing for the bathroom.

9 Problems. If your cat stops using the litter tray, check with yourveterinarian as medical problems might be the cause, otherwiseit's your cat being a cat and looking for attention, perhaps?

Behaviour. Punishing a naughty cat is not the answer, norbanishing it to the great outdoors. For ongoing or complexsituations, an animal-behaviourist will have the experience tohelp resolve any issues of concern.

The Facts of StressLike us, dogs can and do experience stress. Just as stresscan make us feel afraid or hyper or edgy or irritable, it cando the same to our dogs. It is a well established fact thatchronic or long-term stress will likely have a detrimentaleffect on a dog’s behaviour, health and overall well-being.

The systems in the dogs body which control stress arevirtually identical to those in our body. Stress affects anindividual both physiologically and emotionally, and thetwo are always interconnected. The biggest differencebetween "good" stress (eustress) and "bad" stress(distress) is the length of time the organism is under stressand a matter of how the stress affects the subjectemotionally. When something stressful happens the bodyfalls under control of the Sympathetic Autonomic NervousSystem (SANS). Note that the brain is hard-wired to alwaysremember negative emotional responses to help ensureour future safety. When the dog is stressed or frightened,dopamine and noradrenaline are released causing thestimulation and anxiety of the CNS. If the dog ischronically stressed these two neurotransmitters canbecome depleted causing depression.

THE FACT IS

Common causes of stress in dogs are: grief due to loss ofa companion (human or animal), living with a family thatfrequently argues; excessive stimulation (too much play,daycare, dog sports, etc.), insufficient stimulation, toomany dogs per available space, any change in theirenvironment (schedule, people, animals, increased noise),punitive training (shock, choke and prong collars), amixture of reward based training and corrections basedtraining, inappropriate play partners, unreasonableexpectations by us (we expect our dog to always like allpeople and all other animals in all situations), insufficientsocial time/family time, traumatic events, and many more.

Dogs express themselves and communicate with bodylanguage, vocalisations and behaviour By getting familiarwith our dogs' bodies, we can tell when they start to feelstressed. It is imperative to look at the entire body and notjust isolated parts to get the best understanding of whatyour dog is feeling. When stressed a dogs behaviour willoften change. Common behaviours that are often stressinduced are: being restless, an inability to relax, poorsleeping habits (less than 17 hours of sleep per day),excessive sleeping, becoming jumpy/hyper vigilant,irritable, destructive, excessive self-grooming, loss ofappetite, obsessive/compulsive behaviors (e.g. shadowchasing), an inability to focus, hyperactivity, increasedurination and defecation, and vomiting and diarrrhoea.

The easiest way to deal with a dog under stress starts withunderstanding and then removing the dog from the

situation/context where the stress occurs. While this doesnot solve the problem, it is a temporary fix which willmake the dog feel better. Some vets may also recommendchanges in diets, treatment with complementary therapies(Bach Flower Remedies, herbs, homeopathy) if they are soqualified, and if they are a veterinary behaviourist theymay recommend the use of certain drugs.

Medically, it has been established that chronic symptomsof anxiety and stress can crumble our body`s immunesystem. Irrespective of the nature of the causes of stress -real or perceived - the subconscious mind reacts with thesame body response by releasing stress hormones equalto the degree of fear, worry or sense of threat. It bringsabout changes in the body`s biochemical state with extraepinephrine and other adrenal steroids such ashydrocortisone in the bloodstream. It also inducesincreased palpitation and blood pressure in the body withmental manifestations such as anger, fear, worry oraggression. In short, stress creates anomalies in the dog’sbody`s homeostasis. When the extra chemicals in thebloodstream don`t get used up or the stress situationpersists, it makes the dog prone to mental and physicalillnesses.

A bored pet dog would chew, destroy things or moveobjects in and around the household, eat or drinkexcessively, and sometimes, even create inflammationconditions like "lick granuloma" (usually an ulcerated areaon a dog`s wrist or ankle caused by the dog`s ownincessant licking). They also tend to bark a lot when theyare bored. Stressed out dogs show signs of shaking,trembling, restlessness and destructiveness. It is just asimportant to treat boredom, as it is to treat anxiety.

When the stress factor is persistent or repetitive, the bodykeeps secreting the stress hormones and their blood levelsremain continuously at a higher level and hence theassociated functional adjustments. The body nowexperiences stress with extra burden due to the sideeffects of the persistently high stress hormones. Someirreversible physiological damages of the brain and relatedstress physical symptoms like organ damage are causedby these substances. Even when the stress factor is absentsome of these physical and physiological effects of stresspersist unless steps are taken to treat them.

Its very important for your pet to keep active bothphysically and mentally. Brain games and puzzleschallenge your pet in new ways, helping to entertain themand to calm them. Mental activity can effectively releasebuilt up energy in a positive manner.

Becausewe care...Research on rabbit nutrition: With more of an emphasison productivity rather than longevity, this research makesit clear that we can do a great deal for our rabbits bymaking sure that what they eat is affecting thempositively, rather than contributing to the life-threateningdigestive disorders we all fear. While it is not possible tostate definitively what the "best" feeding plan is, theexperiences of HRS fosterers, members, and veterinarianshave given us valuable information on what works andwhat doesn't.

Understanding a rabbit's gut: Because a rabbit'sdigestive system is set up to ingest cellulose in the formof tough, woody stems and fibrous vegetation, itfunctions best when it has something to work with(Brown 1994). However, large quantities of finely groundfeed, sugars, and high levels of carbohydrates canoverwork the gut. Therefore, the key to keeping rabbitsalive and happy longer is to make sure their digestivetracts stay viable and motile, while striking a balancebetween indigestible fibre and nutrition.

Protein overload: A similar thing can happen to rabbitswhen, unable to deal with carbohydrate, glucose, orindigestible protein overload, the cecum becomesimpacted. A high-fibre diet helps prevent this condition bystimulating cecal-colic motility. While the fibre in pellets isstill fibre, it has been shown that the large indigestiblefibre in hay is more effective than small, pulverized fibreat moving food through the digestive tracts of herbivores.It has even been shown that high-fibre diets not onlydecrease hair accumulation in the gut, but may also havea protective effect against enteritis [Cheeke 1987, 181].

Fresh cut quality hay: Although "hairballs" arecommonly diagnosed in rabbits, they may be lesscommon as a primary complaint (particularly in houserabbits) than was once thought. If rabbits receivesufficient exercise, plenty of hay and fresh vegetables,and are not fed pellets the free-choice seems to havealmost no incidence of hairball, even when they are givenno petroleum hairball remedy. One reason for thisphenomenon may be that both exercise and hay improvegut motility (or the rate at which food moves through thedigestive tract). Fresh cut quality hay for its nutritionalbenefits does this because it moves through the gut farmore quickly than finely ground feed (Cheeke 88); andexercise because peristalsis increases (in animals andhumans) when the body moves. A high-fibre dietcombined with exercise should prevent swallowed hairand food from accumulating in the stomach. Interestingly,enteritis does not appear to be as common in wildrabbits, suggesting that the diets and lifestyles of somedomestic rabbits contribute to their higher incidence ofthis disease (Cheeke 1987, 330; Kraus 1984, 236).

WEIGHT CONTROL

Good health is visible through glossy coat, bright eyes,strong bones, supple joints, strong teeth and gums, and inthe process of each life stage weight control is also ofprime importance as your pet’s nutritional needs changewith age.

Overweight dogs and cats has become the norm, butresearch shows that they live longer if they are keptslightly underweight. A high quality protein,low-carbohydrate diet (as featured in our PROTEIN FACTS -page 12) results a in healthier weight loss and bettermuscle mass retention than high-fibre “weight loss” diets.This makes good sense when we consider that our dogs’and cats’ ancestors are designed to eat prey animals -high in protein, relatively high in fat, and very low incarbohydrates.

Most pets will be tempted by a treat, pet trainingencourages treat rewards, but there are ways to moderatethe treat calories without making your pet (or you) feeldeprived. Larger treats can be broken into smaller piecesor provide a lower calorie treat (PRINCE and PRINCESSgrain free Soft Snacks or Alaska fish treats). Limit rawhidebones, marrow bones, and other “chew” treats; many ofthem are very high in fat and calories.

To your dog or cat, it’s more about the attention and lovefrom you that they associate with treats, than about thetreat itself. Whatever treats or “shared” food your pet gets,you need to deduct treat calories to serve a balance meal -that means what goes in the bowl needs to be less!

In addition to providing a wholesome, appropriate diet,there will be times when they need an extra boost. Thereare supplements that will help your pet get the most fromits food, as well as strengthen the immune system,optimize overall health, and support longevity. Theseinclude: Omega-3 fatty acids, digestive enzymes, andprobiotics. (PRINCE and PRINCESS Miracle Oils andPowders).

Counting calories is the best way to understand whatwe’re feeding our cats and dogs. Combined with calorieinformation from the food and treats you feed your pet,you can calculate how much food to feed.

Guide to a healthy weight: (also applies to cats)

You might not be aware that your pet is overfed and underexercised and a monthly weighing regime is the best wayto monitor the situation, especially when an adult pet ismoving into its senior years because caloric requirementsdiminish.

Simple tip: how to weigh your pet on the bathroomscales (depending on its size). Weigh yourself holding thepet and then weigh yourself without the pet and deductthe difference.

FOOD FOR ENERGY

What portions should I feed my dog or cat to meet itsenergy needs? That is the question that presents many petowners with a dilemma.

As a pet food provider we offer general recommendedguidelines, but they will need to be fine tuned when takinglifestyle into consideration. Skin and coat density, ageaccording to breed, size, neutering, weight loss andgrowth rates in puppies/kittens, combined with activityand resting levels as in working dogs or active cats allneed to be accounted for. There will always be a minorinconsistency based on air temperature and coatinsulation which will affect energy levels.

Everyone is different. Of course it's easier for humans tocalculate calories needed against age and activity levelbecause we are all very similar in structure. But with petsyou only need to compare a large working dog that livesoutside with a small dog living life in the comfort of yourhome to highlight the huge difference in their caloricneeds (as shown).


Cheap poor quality food = more cost because food hasto be increased to fulfil energy and nutritionalrequirements + generates more waste and possibly resultsin becoming overweight with possibledigestive/behavioural problems.

High quality costly food = less cost because theconcentration of ingredients means feeding less to fulfilenergy and nutritional requirements + generates lesswaste with the ability to maintain a healthy weight and acontented lifestyle.

To make this calculation properly you should feed highquality food and check the feeding guides shown on thelabel.

RESTING ENERGY REQUIREMENTS (RER) shows the variability ofenergy requirements based upon activity. This value may be based onbreed standards, but you can estimate your pet’s daily caloric needsusing these formulas:

1 Resting Energy Requirement (RER) / 30 (weight in kg) + 70 = kcal2 Metabolic Energy Requirement (MER) / RER x Multiplier(see chart right) = kcal

3 This will give / Target daily caloric intake:

Example:Pet weighs 15 pounds (6.8 kg). Body condition score is around 6-1/2,and its ideal weight is 12 pounds.Pet's Resting Energy Requirement (RER) / 30(6.8) + 70 = 274 kcalPet's Metabolic Energy Requirement (MER) / RER x Multiplier (0.8)= 219 kcalPet's target daily caloric intake: 219 kcal x .18 = 39.42g

In canned food terms, this is between 1 and 3 cans per day.For dry food, this may be anywhere from 1 cup per day to only1/3 cup per day!

MUSCLE CONDITION

Muscle condition is assessed by sight and feel. The areasto observe are the spine, scapulae (shoulders), head, andsides of the ilia (hip muscles). Muscle degeneration variesin other areas of the body but is first noted, and is mostvisible, in the muscles either side of the spine.

WHY?Undernourished, lack of exercise, ill health and old age allcontribute to the condition, but notably, being overweightcan have a significant impact.

Muscle condition is graded in three stages from normal,mild and moderate to severe, where bone structurebecomes clearly visible.

A good quality diet, regular exercise and veterinary checkswill help to keep your pet in tip top condition.

FEEDING AWARENESS

Every dog and cat is different and although we provide thedaily recommended feeding guides for the ideal bodyweight, lifestyle and the environment, weight control,body condition and treats must be accounted for andportions adjusted accordingly.

General appetite may vary but in order to regulatedigestion, blood sugar levels and signs of hyperactivity ornervousness we would recommended feeding twice daily– dividing the daily feeding rates into two meals.

Introducing new food: Changing food should be agradual process. Mix with current food, increasing dailyuntil the changeover is complete. This will ensure asmooth transition so that your pet adjusts to a new regimewithout an upset tummy.

Ensure that you read the feeding guides in relation to yourchoice of food.

DIET ROTATION

• If choosing to feed grain free dry foods we would alwaysrecommend mixing wet with dry.

• Mixing dry food with wet food combines a variety oftastes with a great textured kibble that is designed to helpmaintain healthy teeth and gums.

• Our wet foods have a variety of exotic meats thatprovide additional nutritional benefits, makingdiet rotation even more valuable, just as natureintended.

• The quantities are only intended as a guideand should be adjusted to suit size, age andlevel of activity – see Fact page 68.
