I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Donors and

Supporters, Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers for making 2011 our

most successful ever! Mu. Strut was our greatest effort yet and raised

over $42,000!

In 2011, 972 animals found a temporary home at the Quincy Humane

Society. Of those, 280 were dogs, 321 puppies, 136 cats and 208 ki.ens,

19 guinea pigs, 3 birds and 1 rabbit. Our spay/neuter clinic provided 3041

low cost or subsidized spay and neuter procedures. Our vaccinaon clinic

provided 838 clients and their pets with low cost vaccinaons.

Since the end of November we have more than doubled the volume in

our spay neuter clinic thanks to two generous grants. Pet Smart Charies

granted $98,820.00. The grant will spay/neuter, vaccinate and microchip

animals from a targeted area in Quincy over a two year period. The DJ and

T Foundaon granted $10,000 to spay and neuter dogs. This grant targets

dogs and puppies over 40 pounds. In conjuncon with Paw Pals, through a

$6000.00 grant from the ASPCA we have been able to offer free

vaccinaons for income eligible pet owners Clearly, we connue to

expand our life saving services in our community.

It is said that vision + acon = posive difference. I believe that we

have a very strong vision from our board to propel the acon of our staff

and volunteers that connue to fuel the strides we are making for animals

in our community.

For as long as I can remember I have had a deep love and respect for

animals. I have shared my life and my home with a number of dogs,

several of whom we have, sadly, had to say Goodbye. All my animals, past

and present, have inspired me in a dedicaon to animal welfare. I thank

each and every one of you for your respect, dedicaon and support that

will connue to provide the animals of our community a safe haven and

programs to improve the quality of their lives.

Page 3: Pet Cetera c - Quincy Humane Society...Pet Cetera c Winter 2012 A publication of the Quincy Humane Society 1705 N. 36th Street Quincy, IL 62305 Volume XXXVII fud - u u u Fu B ! T ˜

The Quincy Humane Society has recently been the recipient of

two very large grants for spay/neuter services.

PetSmart Charies has granted us $98,000 to spay/neuter,

vaccinate and microchip all animals located in a targeted area.

This area encompasses the river to 24th Street east/west and

from Harrison to Locust Streets going north/south, as well as

three trailer parks in Quincy. Anyone who lives in those

targeted area can have their dogs or cats fixed, vaccinated

and micro-chipped for no charge. The only fee for these

services applies to dogs - owners must pay $7.50 to cover the

cost of the rabies tag.

This grant will allow us to serve approximately 1760 animals

- helping us prevent the cycle of pet overpopulaon and

ensuring animals are vaccinated and properly idenfied if lost.

If you live in this area, or know someone who does, help us

spread the word about this wonderful opportunity.

The second grant we received was given by the DJ &T

Foundaon. This is a grant for dogs only - and especially for

large dogs over 40 pounds. There is no geographic limit to this

grant - anyone, anywhere with a dog can take advantage of it.

This grant includes spay/neuter surgery and vaccinaons.

Grant recipients must pay the $7.50 tag fee if they live in Ad-

ams County. Grant recipients must also make a co-pay, if they

are able. There is no guideline amount to this co-pay - grant

recipients can pay any amount they are able to afford to help

offset the cost of the grant.

These two grants have already enabled us to fix over 400

animals in the few

months we have

had the funds

available. These are

animals who

otherwise might

never have been

fixed or vaccinated -

which helps our

community keep

our animals healthy

and end the cycle of

pet overpopulaon.

Shelter updates!

Dona0on boxes installed at the shelter

Thanks to a great idea from a

shelter intern and a generous

donaon from a board member, the

Quincy Humane Society has

developed a new way to fundraise at

the shelter on a daily basis.

We have installed donaon boxes

on many of the animal’s kennels that

allow visitors to help contribute to

the costs of their care. The donaon

boxes feature pictures of past or

current shelter animals and menon

services that donaons help pay for.

The shelter has already received

donaons through this method, and

we hope that these will increase as

more people become aware of their

purpose!

Quincy Humane Society receives two spay/neuter grants

Melody Seybold, former Quincy Humane Society volunteer

coordinator, has go.en involved with a program in Peoria called Paws

Giving Independence. Paws Giving Independence is a nonprofit

organizaon completely run by volunteers that trains dogs for service

posions for families – and instead of charging upwards of $15,000 for

the trained canines, this program offers them to families at no charge.

This program was started by two students at Bradley University who

were working with a program that trained service dogs for families that

needed them. AOer ge ng involved, they realized there was a need in

their own area for a program like this – so they started one. Since its

incepon, Paws Giving Independence has accepted 35 dogs, 10 of which

are sll in training. Nearly all the dogs are rescued from animal shelters,

which is a key philosophy to the program.

Dogs are given to foster families, who are then responsible for training

them for 18 to 24 months. They are required to a.end weekly training

classes with their foster dogs. They go everywhere with their foster

parents – the grocery store, sporng events, restaurants, classes – to

help acclimate them to the real life situaons they will face while

working.

Melody adopted Jake, a black lab mix puppy, from the Quincy Humane

Society in December of 2011. She has kept us up-to-date on his

progress: “We brought home our foster puppy, Jake, on Christmas eve

from the Quincy Humane Society. We absolutely adore him. He goes

everywhere with us and is one of the smartest puppies I've ever worked

with. He will be with us for a year and a half to two years before he is

given to someone that needs him. I can already tell it will be more

difficult than I thought to give him up, but I know it will be life changing

for the person that gets him,” Melody emailed.

“Saving a life to change a life…”

Success Stories!

Did you adopt an animal from us? We would LOVE to hear from you! Send us a picture and a

story about how your new fur baby is fiDng into their new home! Email [email protected]

with any informa0on, and maybe you’ll get published in our next newsleFer! c

Peaches (now appropriately named Bananas) has

been a member of our family for almost a year now.

Bananas has become the best friend of both of my

boys, and has even worked her way into the heart of

my husband. She is energec, rambuncous, and so

loveable. She is great with the boys and brought so

much joy to our family! I’ve a.ached some photos

so you can see how much she has grown, and how

much she is loved! Thank you for helping us find the

missing link to our family! - Kae Case

I just wanted to send you a few pictures and an update on "Dust

Bunny", now known as "Ruby." She is adjusng quite well in her

new forever home and we can already tell who wants to be

boss and has both of us wrapped around her li.le paw!!!! She

sure did not like the two hour ride home in the cat carrier, and

she was scared when we got home and wanted to go into hid-

ing, but we gave her some space and she eventually came out

and let us see her from a distance. She is eang well, playing

with all her new toys, exploring her home, sleeping in her new

bed, and seems to be happy and content. She isn't a big fan of

si ng on our laps yet, but I'm sure once she gets to know us

be.er, that will come with me. We both want to thank you

again .... she is adorable ... and we couldn't be happier!!

-Jeff Finfrock and Karen Albert

Here are some pictures from this weekend of Duke and

Harlow.

Thank you again for le ng us know he was available for

us to adopt. He is a great dog and they get along

awesome!!

All memorials received between

7.5.2011 through 1.30.2012 In Loving Memory

A Special Way to Remember... If you would like to remember a deceased family member, friend or pet you can

send your giOs of condolence as a memorial to the Quincy Humane Society. Not only

do these giOs help the many animals found at the Quincy Humane Society, but it also

lets the family of the deceased know that they are remembered.

If you would like to make a donaon in memory or in honor of a person or pet,

please:

c Send your giO to PO Box 3173, Quincy IL 62306

c Enclose a note with your check including the name of the deceased, whether

it is a person or a pet, and the name and address of the family to nofy of

your giO.

c The family will receive a card of acknowledgement. The amount of the giO

remains confidenal.

Thank you for remembering your friends and family in such a wonderful, generous way!
