CANCER REGISTRY:

Supervision/contribution to ‘Karachi South Cancer Registry’ the only population based cancer registry of Pakistan & ‘IARC approved AKUH Pathology based cancer registry’

and Aga Khan hospital cancer registry.

DIAGNOSTIC (SERVICE) WORK:

AKUH histopathology section is an extremely busy lab, which receives over 45, 000

surgical biopsy specimens per year in addition to over 20,000 cytology specimens/year, not only from AKUH but also from each corner of this country through our more than 190 collection points. Currently ten full time pathologists including me share this

immense load equally.

Provide service for aspiration cytology & frozen sections.

Besides routine histopathology and cytology services, my major interest is in developing

immune-pathology services, This includes:

Supervise & consolidate immunocytochemistry service, which is routinely used in this

Page 16: Pervez S CV.docx - iAMscientist: Turn discoveries into opportunities

laboratory for instance for, diagnosis and typing of neoplasms, ER/PR receptors and other prognostic & Predictive markers like ER/PR, Her-2/neu etc. This service, which was

primarily initiated and developed by me for the first time in this country over the years, invites a large number of referral cases from all over Pakistan and abroad.

Supervise and consolidate Flow Cytometry related services. This includes

Leukemia/lymphoma typing, lymphocyte typing, DNA ploidy, S-phase fraction, stem cell

count etc. This service was initiated by me for the first time in Pakistan and also invites a large number of referrals from all parts of Pakistan.

Haematopathology particularly lymphoma Pathology is one of those areas of

histopathology where availability of immunocytochemistry and flow cytometry has the

greatest advantage. Therefore naturally I am more interested in this area. I have a good referral service in this area of diagnostic pathology and get cases from all over Pakistan

& Nairobi.

On weekly basis I receive a large number of difficult cases for my 2nd opinion from

Nairobi AKUH as well as from all parts of Pakistan.

ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCE:

Working as ‘Section Head Histopathology’ since 2003. This is the largest section of the

Pathology & Microbiology department in terms of number of faculty (currently 13 full time), residents (currently 16 residents on board). Section is the largest in Pakistan and

serves as a true referral centre for whole Pakistan, Afghanistan & East Africa.

Serving as ‘Chair Library Committee’ for the last 6 years. During this period library

transformed into a resource matched by few libraries in the developing & developed world.

Chaired & served as member on innumerable university & hospital committees over the

years

LIAISON DEVELOPMENT & CME

I have developed a close communication with physicians from all over Pakistan to provide them speedy and reliable service. I have given innumerable CME talks over the years either

via the platform of Clinical lab CME or on invitation by various hospitals etc. I particularly put great effort in developing liaison with faculty/consultants/GPs of Bolan

Medical College/Sandeman (provincial) hospital, Quetta. I was the main person behind opening of Quetta collection point right from conception of this idea to date. This also included a series of seminars and continuing medical education programs in Quetta. This

helped in inviting a large number of pathology specimens from Baluchistan. The Dean Dirks in his letter duly acknowledged this effort some time ago.

Page 17: Pervez S CV.docx - iAMscientist: Turn discoveries into opportunities

Participate as faculty in CME organized by Clinical Lab in various cities of Pakistan. In last 3 years given twice in Multan and once in Quetta.

PATIENT FACILITATION :

Since I joined AKU for over 18 years now, on daily basis several patients or their relatives from Baluchistan from all walks of life either come to me personally or contact on phone for

my guidance and in most cases obtaining appointments for them at AKUH and care them all along. As I have all my education up to MBBS from Quetta, people of Baluchistan own me

and expect from me to help them out. I am certain that I take more appointments for them then marketing help desk of AKUH in Quetta, most of the time talking to the concerned consultants or section as they come from far flung areas and cannot wait long. Most

clinicians working at AKUH will verify this.
