Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody

“Church is not just for Christmas!”... so said a friend recently. She was chatting about this piece in Perton Pages and being really encouraging, explaining that

she’d mentioned it to other friends who’d been to church over Christmas. Her response was, “Church is not just for Christmas” and suggested this should be my theme... so here goes! She’s right, Church is not just for Christmas... but please don’t think the Vicar’s nagging you to come to church! Rather, I’d love you to see the Church At Perton as your church - a place for all of us, at Christmas and any time - a place where all are welcome.•If you ever need 5 minutes’ peace, somewhere quiet to gather your thoughts, you’re welcome, the church is open Mon-Fri, 10am-3pm. •If you fancy a cuppa while doing Saturday errands... you’re welcome, the church is open from 10.30am-noon. •If you’ve got children... you’re welcome, there are loads of things for different ages. Please see the notices in church and on the website.•If you fancy an hour’s peaceful reflection with others... you’re welcome, The Gathering takes place on the 2nd Sunday, each month, at 6.30pm.•If you fancy finding out about Easter and the Christian faith.. you’re welcome, please come and have a chat. You get the idea! You’re all welcome to your church, any time. Come and say hello, it’d be great to meet you. Church is for anytime, and for all.

Tips from Your Local PGA ProAt Perton Park Golf Club

Golfers, the season is just around the corner so its now time to step up the practice and pop down to the driving range

more regularly.1. Before you start warm up! Do some stretches of all your muscles in your legs, back, arms and shoulders. Hold two clubs together and slowly swing them as normal. After this we need to warm things up further. 2. Start with a short iron and work up through the bag. The shorter club will enable you to ease yourself into hitting shots.3. Aim at a target and use clubs laid on the ground in line with your feet to ensure that you are pointing in the right direction.4. Spend as much time on chipping and putting as you do on the long game. It counts for around 50% of your score, so give it at least 50% of your practice time.Full Shots: 1. Aim at a target and try to get a specified number within a twenty-foot radius2. Groove your pre-shot routine by going through it every time you hit a shot on the range and on the course. It will help your swing function under pressure.3. Concentrate on what you are doing. 25 balls with full concentration is better then 50 hit without thinking.4. Work out how far you can hit each club so you can take your practice to the course. Around the Green: 1. Aim at several targets and vary the length and type of short to increase you feel.2. With chipping take 3 balls and chip at the same flag from a variety of different lies.3. Throw 10 balls in a bunker and play them all as they lie.So then get out on the Driving Range and get your game ready for the “New Season” it will be here before you know it!! Wild About Perton in MarchDuring a wildlife walk some creatures can be easily seen, whereas some cannot. This is because they are active at night; or out of sight under the water; or small and difficult to see. A few years ago a moth trap set up in Penk Meadow one warm summers evening found 35 different species of moth, many of which had striking and colourful markings. Similarly a pond dip in the wildlife pond near the Upper Lake brings in a myriad of mini water beasts. Wild About Perton’s Spring Festival, brings you up close and personal with many of these difficult to see creatures. The Staffordshire Bat Group rescues and rehabilitates sick and injured bats back to the wild and brings to the Festival those which can’t be released because they couldn’t live independently. Similarly Cellie the hedgehog, so named because he was found in a cellar was rescued by Hedgehog Rescue’s Joan Lockley who brings him to Perton because hedgehogs are fast disappearing from our gardens. Halfpenny Green Owl and Falconry Centre rescues injured owls and hawks, who will be displaying their flying skills for all to see on the green opposite the Wrottesley Arms. There’ll also be many domesticated animals to see again this year, including sheep and lambs, goats and hens from a local farm as well as donkeys.Creatures, long disappeared from the earth are coming too, including fossils courtesy of the Geological Society and Neanderthal man in a collection of early human and Ape skulls from the University of Birmingham. Why not compare the size and shape of your head with a Neanderthal? Woodland crafts will be there too with the Forest of Mercia’s pole lath and a chainsaw carver producing all sorts of creatures carved to order from tree trunks. The Spring Festival is free and held in and around Perton Library, on Saturday 12 April. With lots to see and to do for all the family. Or join us on Monday 5 May leaving Perton Library at 4.00AM for the Dawn Chorus.

A Word From Your MPIt was with great pleasure that I started reading Roald Dahl’s George’s Marvellous Medicine, last month. Growing up, this used to be one of my favourite books and, 30 years later, it still made me smile. In case you are becoming concerned, I didn’t just pick up this book on a whim. No, it was National Storytelling Week and I was giving a reading of my favourite childhood novel to the pupils of a local primary school. National Storytelling Week was a wonderful opportunity to encourage children’s interest in reading, something that has given me a great deal of joy throughout my life. In celebration of the occasion, the school was a hosting a series of such events throughout the week, including a book cover competition and trips to its local library. I strongly believe that libraries are one of our most important local facilities and it was with great pleasure that I rounded off National Storytelling Week with my own visit to Codsall Library. During the visit, which took place on National Libraries Day, I was privileged take a tour of the building and meet the library employees. I was greatly impressed with the range of material on offer and the obvious dedication of the staff.Over the past few years, the nature of libraries has changed significantly, in response to a rapidly shifting demand. Today, libraries don’t just offer books. They offer computers, internet access, wifi and digital services - such as e-books and e-magazines - as well as valuable community space. Despite this diversification, the number of visitors to our libraries has sadly been declining over recent years. Some might argue that this decline makes libraries an easy target for budget cuts. However, I believe that free access to educational material and literature is extremely important to our local community. The idea that anyone, rich or poor, can visit a library and access tools for learning is one that I think it is vital we protect. The county council recently opened a public consultation on local libraries. It wants to hear from members of the public about what they are looking for from a library service and how they can best adapt it to ensure that it is sustainable for the long term. These ideas will help form the options that will be formally consulted upon this summer. I urge everyone to make their voice heard and ensure that our libraries are not only protected, but optimised for the way in which local residents wish to use them today. If you would like to comment, you can e-mail: [email protected] or submit it online at: http://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/leisure/librariesnew/Shape-your-library-service.. Leaflets are also available to fill in at every Staffordshire library. To contact me call 01902 846616 or 0207 219 7150
