WELCOME

The Perth Concert Series provides a fantastic opportunity to experience your national orchestras and world class soloists in the glorious acoustic of Perth Concert Hall.

It is the only platform dedicated to showcasing Scotland’s three leading orchestras; the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

The SCO launch the 2018/19 season with Beethoven’s noble Violin Concerto performed by one of Norway’s brightest stars Vilde Frang, while the RSNO’s new Music Director Thomas Søndergård brings Poulenc’s exuberant Gloria featuring the RSNO Chorus. The BBC SSO perform a programme of Debussy to mark the centenary of his death, featuring his poetic seascape La Mer and the iconic work Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune.

The three orchestras are joined by a host of star soloists: Nicola Benedetti plays and directs two Mozart Violin Concertos with the SCO, Alexander Gavrylyuk teams up with the RSNO to perform Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto and Carolin Widmann joins forces with the BBC SSO to perform the witty, electrically-charged Violin Concerto that Stravinsky intended to be unplayable.

Remember that by booking all six concerts in the season you can save 25% and that Under 16s go FREE to the Perth Concert Series. Plus, you can also book the following concerts at the same time as your subscription; The Russian State Symphony Orchestra, RSNO Christmas Concert featuring The Snowman, New Year Gala Concert, RSNO Prom with the Ayoub Sisters, and Sir Scallywag and the Golden Underpants. So join us for another year of nights out that raise the roof and stir the soul, right in the heart of Scotland!

Thursday 8 November 2018, 7.30pmRoyal Scottish National Orchestra

Prokofiev Symphony No 1 'Classical'Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No 1 Ken Johnston Three movements from 'All Those Men Who Marched Away' Poulenc GloriaThomas Søndergård Conductor Alexander Gavrylyuk Piano Elin Rombo Soprano Glasgow Cambiata RSNO Chorus Frikki Walker Director, Glasgow Cambiata Gregory Batsleer Chorus Director, RSNO Chorus

Music is life – and life always finds a way. Poulenc's Gloria is a celebration – an exuberant shout of joy from a composer who’d seen the best and worst of the 20th century. It’s the inspiring finish to a concert that features two irresistible Russian masterpieces by Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky (with the brilliant Alexander Gavrylyuk as soloist), but also, at its heart, a new piece from Ken Johnston as we commemorate the anniversary of World War I, featuring the superb young singers of Glasgow Cambiata.

DEBUSSY ‘LA MER’

Friday 23 November 2018, 7.30pm BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra

Debussy Nocturnes* Ravel Piano Concerto for the Left Hand Debussy Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune Debussy La Mer

Thomas Dausgaard Conductor Joaquín Achúcarro Piano Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Voices*

“I have slandered the sea” wrote Claude Debussy. “Today it is beautiful enough to defy all comparisons.” Yet 100 years after his death in 1918, Debussy’s La Mer is surely the most poetic seascape ever painted for an orchestra, the work of a composer whose quiet genius turned music into an art of limitless expressive subtlety. This centenary celebration opens with Nocturnes – Impressionist paintings, transformed into ravishing sound – and includes the Prélude whose unprecedented sensuality scandalised Belle Époque Paris. But there’s darkness as well as light: BBC SSO Chief Conductor Thomas Dausgaard joins Joaquín Achúcarro in the brooding concerto that Debussy’s compatriot Ravel created for a pianist who’d lost an arm in the Great War.

Pre-concert talk 6.45pm

Thomas Dausgaard and pianist Joaquín Achúcarro discuss tonight’s concert and their musical passions.

BRUCKNER SYMPHONY NO 7

Friday 22 February 2019, 7.30pm BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra

CPE Bach Symphony in E flat major Stravinsky Violin Concerto Bruckner Symphony No 7

Ilan Volkov Conductor Carolin Widmann Violin

The first thing you sense is a quiet shimmer in the air. And then, like some vast mountain rising from the clouds, the opening melody of Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony soars majestically towards the heavens. Bruckner said it came to him in a dream, played by an angel – but when Ilan Volkov brings his searching musical intelligence and emotional insight to bear on this monumental “cathedral in sound”, the results might well be revelatory. Two contrasting – but equally inventive – masterpieces set the scene: an ebullient little symphony from JS Bach’s son Carl Phillip Emmanuel, and the witty, electrically-charged Violin Concerto that Stravinsky intended to be unplayable. No fear on that score from our soloist Carolin Widmann.

Tonight’s conductor Ilan Volkov, discusses the concert.

BENEDETTI PLAYS MOZART VIOLIN CONCERTOS NOS 3 & 5Wednesday 3 April 2019, 7.30pm Scottish Chamber Orchestra

Brilliant, tuneful, rhythmic, exotic – that’s what ‘Turkish’ meant to Mozart, and his violin concerto is a joyous showstopper for Scotland’s favourite violinist.

THE QUILTER CHEVIOT BENEDETTI SERIES

Mozart Violin Concerto No 3 in G, K216* Mozart Symphony No 35 in D, K385 ‘Haffner’ Anna Clyne Within her Arms Mozart Violin Concerto No 5 in A, K219 ‘Turkish’*

Nicola Benedetti Violin/Director* Benjamin Marquise Gilmore Violin/Director

Benedetti play-directs two Mozart Violin Concertos with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. These lovely pieces are perfect for her. Mozart probably wrote them for himself to play on his many tours and needless to say, he made sure they had all you could wish for in a showpiece: plenty of fireworks, sublime slow movements and quirky, memorable features like the ‘Turkish’ effects in No 5. Anna Clyne’s Within her Arms has been compared to Barber’s Adagio for Strings for its radiance and intensity – a moving contrast to Mozart’s youthful high spirits.

BEETHOVEN FIVE

Thursday 2 May 2019, 7.30pmRoyal Scottish National Orchestra

Beethoven Coriolan OvertureMozart Flute and Harp Concerto K299 Beethoven Symphony No 5

Nathalie Stutzmann Conductor Katherine Bryan Flute Pippa Tunnell Harp

‘Da-da-da-daaa!’: everyone knows the first four notes of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Now’s your chance to hear the rest – and it’s gripping: a no-holds-barred emotional struggle from tragedy to triumph, in some of the most dramatic music ever written. It’s perfect for our inspirational guest conductor Nathalie Stutzmann. First, though, comes something a bit gentler, as the RSNO’s Principal Flute Katherine Bryan and harpist Pippa Tunnell perform Mozart’s elegant – but deliciously witty – Concerto for Flute and Harp.

Dedicated to the Lillie Bequest Fund in recognition of the RSNO Foundation’s generous support.
