01themodelerOn my first day within the Interior Architecture & Product Design program, I was given a project description/requirements packet for a semester long task. The project concluded with a loft development for two specific clients whose backgrounds were are choosing in a given location. The site was given with required square footage and two exterior wall constraints. The concept of the build must be developed off a strong parti diagram derived from a painting in the 1900’s. The piece of artwork I chose for my inspiration was Kandinsky’s Upward painting from the Bauhaus movement.

colored forms allowed me to notice it’s shifting vertical arrangement and centralized rotation. I developed a few 3-dimensional parti’s from my hand sketch to the left and finally landed on a solution. Once there I began constructing scaled 3D models of how I was going to address the shell of my building.

The beginning stage of the parti is critical for the rest of the design development. So once drawn to the paint-ing by Kandinsky, I began to analyze and spatially/geo-metrically dissect the image verbally with keywords. I was captivated by Upward’s simplicity and abstract nature of the image. The symmetric motion of the

façade along with its cables are taken from the Golden Gate Bridge located in the city. The clients consist of a young married couple, upper twenties to low thirties. A man and wife who share a design background, one an introvert the other, an extrovert. In the plan,

Not only did the parti applied to the final form of the building but also the given location of San Francisco and the characteristics of the clientele. The slanted profile of the site resembles the topography of the city and the color of its

The shifting action that was inspired from Kandinsky’s Upwards is represented in the plan through physical alteration and also materiality. The radial motion was shown in plan making up his work studio on the

second floor which mirrors the public space on the ground floor, circulated by stairs. The finalized parti partners with the existing wall structure to define livable spaces in plan.

The Model

Looking back at the end of the semester, the development of the parti from researching the Bauhaus movement, to concept boards, all the way to a finished product was one of the most unique and

intriguing ways I have ever designed. This was my first exposure to the parti and it will not be my last. I can personally say, working within it, yet timely, is probably one of the most efficient ways to design.

02thedesignerThis project was targeted toward exhibit and experiential design. The Museum of Kansas History located in Topeka, Kansas has a wide variety of displays but most are unfortunately out dated and unappealing. As a studio, students were to walk through the Museum and become inspired by an exhibit to redesign. I was drawn to the current day state, shown to the right, the William Allen White exhibit.

the William Allen White ExhibitI began the redesign process in this project becoming fully educated on what was to be displayed. While looking at the current day exhibit in the Museum of Kansas History, I wondered if they were educating me about the massive iron

printing press or William Allen White? After several hours of research, I found out William Allen White was actually an inspiring author, newspaper editor and owner, and a great political icon of his generation. White owned the printing press that is

The diagram below shows the viewer’s line of sight from taller adults to the heights of the museum’s most common customer, fourth graders.

The surrounding images show the physical motions and action of the miniature printing presses as well as a close up of the display table. Each stamp that is placed arbitrarily on the table is backed with a magnetic surface that allows the stamps to connect into the

miniature presses and stay stationary as it is in motion. Additionally this metal display table permits the stamps to be in anyone’s open line of sight and to also correct the mirrored display of the stamp to reflect it off the glossy metal surface to see exactly what your end product will look like.

03theinnovatorNemschoff is one of the leading producers in healthcare furniture design. In this project I was placed into a small team and Skyped with a Nemschoff designer to learned firsthand what it takes to be successful in this growing field. Not only is the home health care industry more affordable and based off pure convenience, it is in a growing field of its own. In this team we were able to intensely research a common day disease or infection that a patient would normally have to leave to go to a hospital on a regular bases that had the potential of being able to be treated from the comfort of their home.

When designing a home healthcare products for cystic fibrosis, Stave Solutions (our team name) knew with the security and full range of treatments that you would normally get in a hospital setting, we were going to have to make the patient feel confident at home for the product to be successful. With knowledge of what your treatment is going to entail comes

confidence. With that, a central location is provided for everything you might

need or desire when managing this life altering disease.

Page 26: Personal Portfolio

Loosening up mucus through pulsation applied to the chest cavity is an old remedy when it comes to treating cystic fibrosis, but this takes a new approach by combining comfort and convenience. Our measured to patient

size clapping vest pulses pressure to the optimal locations on your chest to loosen up your mucus allowing you to breathe easier and go on with your day. This same technology lies within the second comfort layer of your relief chair that is accompanied

by the magnets of the first comfort layer that then connects to the back side of your vest. Providing a charging port and the ability of free mobility and also while within the relief chair, 360 degrees of treatment can be achieved.

Its all about the connection

Postural drainage is done on the relief chair, but first a source of control and introduction needs to be downloaded through the Stave Solutions applications. Cystic fibrosis

patients often orient their bodies in commonly practiced positions in means of dislodging thick mucus to be relieved. The chair’s skeleton must be first

sized to the patient. If desired for free range of mobility, the skeletal system may be manipulated by sections.

Page 28: Personal Portfolio

The three products along with the application provide comfort, relief, convenience, safety and make up the home healthcare treatment center for people who are fighting for their lives against cystic fibrosis.
