Hellvetica and the Great Movable Typehomage to the typeface Helvetica, After watching the ‘helvetica’ documentary I noticed that not all the opinions were positive and that some deemed the typeface over-used, with this in mind I decided to make the poster a play on words from the Horror film ‘Hellraiser’ implying the prospect of a dystopia where this was the only typeface, also inspired by some of the dystopian themes covered in our C.S lectures.
Contours in the UnexpectedWhile I laboured for hours carving my Hellraiser shaped passage through the soft Lino I had purchsed earlier that day, I noticed that when veiwed close up It resembled the contours of a map, Possibly a potential logo for a surveying company or just as a fine art piece as an accurate representation of map on a large scale.
Typeface on TypefaceSemi-inspired by the works of people like Robert The and Olafur Ellason I wanted to create a typeface made of type. Rather than going with my normal approach which would have been photoshop manipulation I decided to walk the slow and lengthy path of hand drawn, so I bought an old book from a charity store and set to work.
Girl in Bath and the Illustrator FiascoI have really enjoyed looking at the work by Malevici in C.S but I find it hard to be satisfied by producing minimalist work myself so I wanted to combinedetailed line illustration and minimalism, the face and protruding body parts being the floating shapes. The image itself could potentially be used for an advertising campaign for bubble bath or bathing based products, much like some of the designs shown in CS promoting education and books, lthough the dissemination factor for todays society is more geared toward consumerism as opposed to the education based posters of Malevici.
Minotaur Explode vs the Black Heart of the CityThere does seem to be a theme running through underground music culture that has a DIY punk rock ethic where alot of the bands playing the music also create their own art, a lot of it using familiar imagery i.e birds, hearts, skulls etc. I supposed for the same reasons economical as well as political drivers can be attatched because a lot of the bands involved in the DIY culture are doing so because of an inability to get funding from record labels and a lot of the art is of a political nature.
Spilt MilkThe crying boy is a t-shirt design I did for my own band Tropics, to be honest the brief was more of a task, as after an in joke we all thought it would be a great image to have a boy crying because he’d wet himself but the urine patch spelt the band name,
D AND A D: Illustration BriefBased in a future where headphones can tap into how your brain interprets music and project it as images in front of you.
