Gyrophone The MyDevice is a quirky new

smartphone that boasts arevolutionary user interface

based on motion control—the screenshifts whether you are holding

the device horizontally orvertically. Plus the ‘book

layout’ menustructure

creates anentirely

newuser

experienceand easier access

to mobile multimediaservices. The phone is

designed and built by MyOrigoin Finland but it’s doubtful that theywill sell the phone directly andprobably sign a deal with a networkto create an own brand phone, likeOrange has done with the SPV.

The phone we tested out was aprototype but it gives you a prettygood indication of what to expectwhen the MyDevice ships at the end

of the month. The standard packagewill comprise of a phone, stereoheadset, PC sync package and a coupleof games. The target price is around£150 to £250 with contract.

Measuring 124x59x23mm andweighing 149g, the MyDevice isgunning for the likes of the SonyEricsson P800 and Nokia 6600. Thestyling is clean and minimalist, combining the Nokia 7650’s classiclines with a flip-free Sony EricssonP800. At both ends of the 320x176pixel colour display there are touchsensitive buttons tipped off by sliversof aluminium. A camera is discretelyplaced at the back. Non slip feet at allfour corners ensure that the phonedoesn’t slide around on your desk.

Squeeze meYou switch on the MyDevice bysqueezing not one, but two buttonslocated either side of the phone and alittle green light appears briefly at thetop of the phone before the touchscreen flickers to life. The standbyscreen is reminiscent of the P800 witha virtual keypad and a strip of iconsabove. The battery and signal metersare tiny though.

Whilst the final specification willdepend on who takes the phone,MyOrigo has provisioned a tri-bandchipset, GPRS, 64Mb RAM, a digitalcamera and MP3 player as standard. There is a SD card slot for extra storageand music files. First release devices

Electricity in motion: Tesla Model S

Building on the success of the Tesla Roadster (the electric car that added sex appeal to a market plagued by ugly golf buggies) the Model S is aimed at the more lucrative family market. Unlike its racy sibling, the more sensible Model S seats seven, does 0-60mph in 5.6 seconds and claims a 300-mile range.
