USING “PERSISTENT LINK” URLS FOR DATABASE JOURNAL

ARTICLES

Instructors & students, follow these easy steps to posting or submitting an article as part of a Moodle assignment, via email, etc.

Wil Peters, Noel Mem. Library, LSUS 2009

Page 2: Persistent URLs

What are the advantages ?

Only cutting & pasting a url, not pages of html article

No bother with attaching a pdf to an email, or uploading article to a Moodle folder

Page 3: Persistent URLs

How to do it ! Off-campus users have to authenticate, so the URL

for the article has to have this added piece that passes the patron through our proxy server for authentication:

http://ezproxy.lsus.edu:2048/login?url=  For example, you want to create a link to the article

"Do Volunteers Deserve the Board's Attention?," which is available from Ebsco's Business Source Complete, then

the persistent URL for this article is: http://ezproxy.lsus.edu:2048/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=bth&AN=19072309&site=ehost-live  **(Ebsco already includes the proxy string, but other databases may not. In that case, be sure to append it at beginning of string)

Page 4: Persistent URLs

To start: search a database & select article or, use A-to-Z list to go to known journal & retrieve

article

Page 5: Persistent URLs

Here are retrieved short records for a search (Recycling) done in Ebsco’s

Academic Search Complete

Page 6: Persistent URLs

Once full record displayed (not the full text), then capture the persistent link url to

journal article

Also, students can grab the citation in appropriate style (MLA, APA, etc.) for

submission along with article link
