A message from the Town Mayor I never cease to be impressed by the commitment and enthusiasm of Pershore people. Since Liz and I became Mayor and Mayoress in May, we’ve formally attended nearly 30 events in the town. The Jubilee weekend was a huge success, despite the weather. Since then, the Abbey Flower Festival, Bell Boat Regatta, the River Festival, Midsummer Brass, the Plum Festival and Jazz Festival, all have drawn people into the town. Congratulations to all those who have done the hard work.
Liz and I have also represented the town at external events. Highlights were undoubtedly the Mercian Regiment homecoming to Worcester on 27
th June – and the
Queen’s Jubilee visit on 11th July. You can imagine how thrilled I was to be introduced
personally to Her Majesty. I told her I came from Pershore, the Plum Capital of England!
We’ve been pleased by the response to the Mayor’s Coffee Mornings in the Town Hall. The Baha’i Children’s Art Group, Raynaud’s and Scleroderma Association and Waterloo Schools have, between them, raised nearly £600. The next is on 15
th
September, with CLIMB (Children Living with Inherited Metabolic Diseases). Contact the Town Hall if you would like to hold a coffee morning for your local charity. Many people knew Betty Hughes MBE, the first Lady Mayor of Pershore, who died at the end of May. The Memorial Service in Pershore Abbey was a fitting tribute to all she did for the town. It was lovely to be present recently when one of Betty’s great friends, Georgie Nelmes, was presented with a hamper by the Co-op for her 76 years collecting the Divi!

Welcome Welcome to the autumn edition of the Town Council newsletter. As usual there are various updates about twinning and other aspects of the Council’s responsibilities but exciting news is of the forthcoming royal visit when the Duke of Gloucester will be coming to Pershore specifically to see the Avon Meadows wetlands, a joint project between the Town and District Council. He is coming on 3
rd October but details of his
visit are still in the planning stage and more information will be in the press as it emerges. You will also see from the article from Inspector Kent that there are to be some changes at Pershore Police Station. The Town Council and the PACT panel have some concerns about a number of the proposals and Chief Inspector J. Reakes-Williams or a member of the Command Team will be attending the next PACT meeting to answer residents questions. This will be on 20
th September at the Town
Hall at 7.30pm so please come along to find out more details about the plans for policing in our town.

Twinning The largest group for some time to visit Plouay will leave Pershore on Saturday 5
th October, returning on Wednesday 8
th. Twenty six
people will be travelling by coach from Pershore. The group includes the well known Pershore Brass, who hope to build links with our twin town and also take part in some musical events whilst there.
Future Visits: There will be a return visit from Plouay
to Pershore next year and although dates are yet to be confirmed, anyone interested in hosting is asked to contact the Town Hall. The next visit from Pershore will be in 2013 to Bad Neustadt. This is likely to take place in October and again anyone interested is asked to contact the Town Hall.
Pershore Town Council – Updates
As you will no doubt all be aware the Town Council took possession of the Library at the end of June and is currently working on the plans for the new library and community building. As soon as these have been agreed by the Council it is intended to put them on display for residents to view and understand what is hoped to be achieved. Planning permission is likely to be needed and it is probable that the library service will need to move out of the building while the works are taking place. Currently the preferred base for the library will be at the Town Hall and more information will be publicised as soon as it becomes available.
In addition to the library, the Town Council has recently purchased several acres of land on the edge of Tiddesley Wood. This land is in the middle of the five mile circular walk from Pershore Bridge and gives the opportunity for the Council to create some amenity space accessed from the public right of way on which it sits. This is a longer term project but the Council will be considering options for the management of this land over the coming months.

This will hopefully make it easier for people to find the information about the Council that they need and will include an online copy of the newsletter. Those of you who visit our website regularly may find you need to click the refresh button once you are on the site to enable it to appear correctly. The purpose of this short article is to inform you of some changes that have recently occurred to the provision of policing services within Pershore and the surrounding district. I have already informed and discussed these changes with both Pershore Town Council, and Pershore PACT, prior to the changes being implemented. Up until the 1st August Police Officers at Pershore comprised of three distinct teams. Local foot patrols and community based work was undertaken by PC John Hunter, and CSOs David James and Andrew Russell. Investigation of complex or protracted matters was conducted by Wychavon CID, and uniform patrol and response work between the

Changes to the Policing Team at Pershore

hours of 7am and 1am was performed by a team based out of Pershore station. Outside of these hours, officers based at Evesham were directed to the town to provide the necessary presence and response.
Due to the terms of the budget settlement made to West Mercia Police we are faced with having to deliver the same level of service, but with a lower level of funding. As a result, from 1st August the response team at Pershore has been merged with that of Evesham, and will operate out of Evesham police station. This has allowed a reduction in the number of vehicles used, and a better use of those that remain. This is an extension of the arrangements that existed at night. An officer from Evesham will be dedicated to patrol Pershore.
In relation to PC Hunter, his team and CID, they will all continue to work out of Pershore police station. I will also continue to be based at Pershore, and part of my remit will be ensuring that the policing team still meets the targets that are set for it in terms of public service. As I write this, three weeks into this change standards of service have been maintained.
The front counter at the station is also still open. In the future, this may move to within the Wychavon District Council building as part of the hub provision. However, my aim is to continue to deliver a local service.

Pershore Cemetery Following recent concerns about the difficulties in managing the
upkeep of the cemetery, some residents expressed an interest in
forming a “Friends of Pershore Cemetery”. Details of how this group
will operate and what tasks it may be able to undertake are still being discussed
and it is anticipated that more information will be available in time for the next
Cemetery Committee meeting on 3rd
October.

Pershore Market Town Partnership update The Pershore Market Town Partnership was first established in January 2002 with the aim of bringing together organisations from the public, private, community and voluntary sector to deliver projects which would seek to improve the quality of life in the area.
The Partnership is comprised of a Board of members (around 20) and LSP Action (or theme) groups. These groups are comprised of wide ranging networks whose aim is to identify community projects for grant and development support, whilst helping to meet the objectives as set out in the county and district’s sustainable community plan. The Partnership is supported by a part-time Partnership Manager, Steve Knight, who can be contacted on (01386) 565519 or by email [email protected].
Since inception, the PMTP have supported a wide range of economic and social regeneration projects across Pershore and its rural hinterland. Projects supported during this time included the creation of Number 8 Community Arts Centre, the development of a Visitor Information Centre, new town signage, creation of the town’s wetlands conservation area, rural business support and the development of a youth shelter and summer activities programme for young people living in the Pershore area.
Current projects that are able to operate thanks to the assistance of the PMTP are the PRIDE loyalty card, Pershore’s Dementia Café, a safe community sports area within Cherry Orchard, and multiple festivals and events that prominently put Pershore on the map.
Looking ahead, the River is a significant focus of development, by having multiple potential advantages embracing tourism, education and aesthetics. The first ‘Havon on the Avon’ is close to completion creating Pershore as a significant attraction to the boating community due to the facilities available. Along with the River, access into Pershore - via railway - is hoping to be enhanced with the potential expansion of the car park at the station. This will provide residents and tourists with an enhanced capacity improving user’s satisfaction.
New ideas and projects are always welcomed, so you are invited to get in touch if you have something in mind. Application forms will be accessible from the PMTP manager in the Autumn.

Well the park certainly has had a good watering these past few months and now it’s looking green and luscious in the sunshine. Our British weather sure does know how to confuse a property though, from flooded and deep rutted buggy routes and wet weather alternative activities to baking heat and happy house martins within the space of a couple of days! Adaptation is everything here to keep our visitors happy!
Many of the staff and volunteers at Croome came out to show their support for our popular 1940’s weekend in July despite the terrible weather and cancelled Hurricane Hawker fly by. The team stayed jovial and kept spirits up by participating in a spot of 1940’s dressing up and the 1940’s style canteen was a buzzing hub of activity with our wonderful singer Kevin Mack keeping on going until the very last visitors had enjoyed their refreshments. Running alongside the 1940’s weekend this year Croome held the 2
nd reunion for the ex-
pupils of St Josephs Special school for disadvantaged boys. A school which was run by Catholic nuns from 1948 – 1978 using Croome Court, The Red Wing and stable block.
For some of the ex pupils it was their first trip back to Croome in over 40 years. For others it was a chance to come back and meet up with old friends. The ex pupils, their friends and family spent the day reminiscing, exploring, looking over old photographs and sharing memories – some good, some bad. Over the past couple of years the staff and volunteers at Croome have become warm and welcoming to ex pupils when they return and this has been so valuable in helping some of the ex-pupils who find their return difficult. The ex-pupils themselves help to organise the reunion and have been busy updating social network sites such as Friends Reunited and Facebook, we are already planning the event for next year and are hoping to expand the group to reach more ex-pupils each year.

Funding — As reported in the spring edition of this newsletter the funding for the Centre is changing dramatically from January 2013 when the Trustees will take over from Worcester County Council responsibility for the maintenance of the building and employment of youth workers. Although WCC will be making some money available it is vital the Centre can attract further funding. It is therefore planned to set up events in the autumn to attract corporate sponsorship and to set up a friends group.
Bell Boat Regatta — The Bell boat Regatta based at the Centre was again a huge success this year. The event, organized by Andy Train, attracted 100 teams of paddlers with an estimated 1500 people attending during the day and lining the banks of the Avon to cheer on the teams. In the morning 32 teams took part in the Parish Games which were won by Fladbury. The afternoon saw teams from local schools followed by parent’s races. The winners of the year 4 schools were Overbury First, Year 5 Broadway First and year 6/7 St Nicholas Middle School. Refreshments, including ice creams and over 300 cups of tea and 200 bacon butties were sold by Trustees and members of the Youth Club.
Retirement of John Grantham MBE as Trustee — The Trustees would like to take this opportunity to thank John Grantham for the huge contribution he has made to support the youth of this town over many years. From the mid 1980s to the mid 1990s he was president of Pershore District Scouting Association. In 1992 he and Richard Bateman started the Youth Drop in Centre. He subsequently became a Trustee at the Pershore Riverside Centre. His place on the board of Trustees as Pershore Town Council representative has been taken by his son Cllr Richard Grantham. The Trustees are determined to ensure the Centre continues to develop. To achieve this, an income stream from the hire of facilities (such as for kids parties) and running courses. e.g. in water sports, has been developed. So please do come and hire our facilities, volunteer to help the qualified youth workers, help us obtain grants and if possible make donations or sponsor our activities.

Since 2004 the Rotary Club of Pershore has provided the Christmas tree in Broad Street, inviting individuals to dedicate a light in memory of friends and relatives no longer with us. Over that period in excess of £18,000 has been raised for charities chosen by the Club.
For 2012 the amount raised will be allocated to Acorns Children’s Hospice (45%), our Pershore public access defibrillator project (45%) with 10% held for other Rotary sponsored charities.

Recruiting Pershore Town Tour Guides You may or may not be aware that the Town Council has a group of volunteer Town Guides who provide tours of some of Pershore’s heritage sites. All information is provided together with insurance for which Risk Assessment training is provided (which is not as onerous as it sounds!).
All tours are pre-booked and usually take about an hour, with groups of not more than 8 people, which sometimes means more than one group following each other. To date interest is growing as the service is publicised and we are therefore, looking for more volunteers. Do you have an interest in your town’s history, and do you have a spare few hours every now and then?

PERSHORE SIXTH FORM STUDENTS CELEBRATE MORE SUCCESS
The 119 students entered for Advanced level (A2) examinations this summer have hit the heights, with an A to E rate of 99.5%. 77% of results were obtained at grade C or higher, with 51.7% at A*, A or a B. The average point score per Year 13 candidate of 818.7 and per subject entry of 225.7 is also very encouraging.

Headteacher, Clive Corbett, congratulated all students on the dedication and commitment that has enabled them to achieve such marvellous results. He also thanked the Sixth Form team led by Jason Howell and all other staff for contributing to this outstanding level of student performance. He said; "The continued high performance of our Sixth Form students is something that I am proud to acknowledge. I would like to offer them my best wishes in their future endeavours."

Number 8 Community Arts centre in Pershore have unveiled an exciting line up of events, films, exhibitions and courses for the Autumn season. Highlights include shows from comedian/
broadcaster Mark Steel and TV wildlife presenter Chris Packham, theatre productions of Micheal Morpurgo’s Farm Boy and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde, music from Queen tribute band
GAGA and comedy with A Black Country Night Out.
The centre will also be beaming in events live via satellite, including NT Live’s adaptation of the Mark Haddon novel The Curious Incident of the Dog and the Night -Time and The Last of the Haussmans with Julie Walters,
La Sylphide live from the Bolshoi Theatre and the Royal Ballet’s Swan Lake.
Films for the Autumn range from comedies such as Hope Springs and The Women on the 6
th Floor, to the moving
documentary Nostalgia for the Light and drama Private Peaceful. There will also be a special preview screening of the previously unreleased extended version of
The Shining on Halloween.
For children there is the enchanting theatre production Moon Ladder followed
by a creative workshop, screenings of Brave and ParaNorman and weekly youth theatre and after-school dance classes.

The trail, which started in the historic Spa town of Droitwich, travelled past historic canals, taking in stunning views over the Vale of Evesham and passed through our historic market town, on Wednesday 15th before ending at the Cotswold village of Broadway on Friday 17th.
Originally devised by John Wrenn during the year of Her Majesty The Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977, the improved route, which gives visitors the opportunity to explore the beautiful countryside and villages this part of the world has to offer, has been launched again 35 years later in this, the year of Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee. An engraved ‘baton’, or walking stick, was passed on as one group of volunteers finished one stretch of the walk and another group continued the route. Pictured on the front cover are the walkers that did the final leg through Pershore, finishing at the Pershore Bridges picnic site.
