Responsible Recycling (R2)
Certification
While recycling events are onthe rise in the U.S., andconsumers and corporations aremore conscious about recycling, the problem is that somerecyclers have not properlymanaged final recovery anddisposal of these wastes. Indoing this, you can instill publicconfidence through certifiedthird party review of recyclerpractices.
Responsible Recycling Practices R2:2013 is an updatedversion of the R2 standard that keeps recyclersaccountable, offers a seal of approval for responsiblerecyclers and waste management companies, protectsemployees throughout the supply chain, and protects thepeople in the developing world who are exposed to thehazards of e-waste. Supported by the EnvironmentalProtection Agency (EPA), R2 is a set of principles andspecific practices that recyclers disassembling orreclaiming used electronics equipment must adhere to.These guidelines call for the establishment and use of amanagement system that covers environmental, workersafety, and public health practices on-site anddownstream management of end-of-life equipment andmaterial (EPA.gov, ).Responsible Recycling Practices

R2 ensures that the recycler complies withenvironmental, health, and safety legalrequirements that are applicable to the recyclers’operations. ‘Going Green’ is not just a trend orinitiative asserted by environmental protectiongroups anymore, it has become a business strategyfor promoting environmentally responsiblepractices to consciouscustomers while positivelyimpacting the bottom line.
In order to become 3rdparty certified to R2:2013,an e-waste company mustalso be certified to ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001and/or RIOS. While ISO 9001 is not necessary forR2 certification, an e-waste company would benefitfrom implementing one to help meet the QualityAssurance requirements within the R2:2013Standard. R2:2013 certification is a two-stage auditprocess, as are most management system standards.
