10 History

As a young man in Montreal, Fleuri Perron heard Bishop Grandin speak o WesternCanadian settlements like St. Albert. At the age o 17, Perron rst moved west to EggLake, 10 miles north o St. Albert, and then nally settled in St. Albert in 1896. For thenext 30 years, Perron would have a signicant impact on the community.

Once established in St. Albert, Perron bought several local businesses, including the

Windsor Hotel, which he renovated extensively; the general store located on mainstreet (now known as Perron Street); and at the turn o the century, he opened thePerron Brickyard, employing 20 local men and operating until 1932.

Ater working as a businessman and entrepreneur, Perron began his career in politicsin 1904 by serving on the rst St. Albert Town Council. He was elected as the secondmayor o St. Albert in 1908 and served three terms. Additionally, Perron was the rstVice-President o the St. Albert Board o Trade, and the rst President o the Alberta

French Canadian Association.

During this time, Perron continuednding new business opportunities. In1912, he purchased the 30-oot St. The-resa paddle wheeler to give boat tourso the Sturgeon River and Big Lake areato local residents. The boat later movedto Lac St. Anne when the local waterlevels dropped too low.

Perrons lie and the citys were drasti-cally changed when the Perron GeneralStore was destroyed by re in 1919. There was particularly devastating as thegeneral store had served as a tradingpost or northern residents as ar awayas Athabasca, and as a casual meet-ing place or local residents. Following

the re, Perron opened a butcher shopacross the street and rented anotherstore in the mid 1920s on the site o hisoriginal General Store.

Although Perron let St. Albert orseveral years during an economicdownturn in the 1920s, he eventually

returned to live out his remaining days. Following his death in August 1931, hisson Eugene Perron continued the amily tradition and purchased the generalstore business that his ather ran or the last years o his lie.

The downtown district o St. Albert experienced a period o great expansion

at the beginning o the 20th century. By 1908, the downtown area eatured

two banks and hotels, several retail and service outlets, as well as a blacksmith,

drugstore, and butcher shop. In the ollowing years, the Dawson Block was

completed and housed a bakery, bank, millinery shop, a drug store, and many

other businesses.

St. Alberts main street was renamed Perron Street in 1967 to recognize the

impact and infuence that Fleuri Perron had on the local business community

and St. Albert as a whole.

Today, the Perron District is the heart o St. Albert, eaturing historical buildings,

colorul estivals, the St. Albert Farmers Market, as well as numerous shopping,

dining, and cultural attractions.
