DESCRIPTION

St. Albert's Perron District is the heart of our City, and the official Arts & Heritage District of St. Albert. With an active business community serving the needs of a diverse group of shoppers, exciting restaurants offering a range of menu choices, an exceptional group of galleries and studios and an impressive museum, the downtown has much to offer for residents and visitors of all ages. The Perron District is also a gathering place year-round as people come together to enjoy the St. Albert Farmers’ Market, to host the children of Alberta at the Northern Alberta Children’s Festival, to cheer on the Rainmaker Rodeo Parade, to celebrate the cars and music of bygone years at Rock’n August, and to welcome the joys of the festive season at the Downtown Christmas Lightup.

Fleuri Perron 1866-1931As a young man in Montreal, Fleuri Perron heard Bishop Grandin speak of Western Canadian settle-ments like St. Albert. At the age of 17, Perron first moved west to Egg Lake, 10 miles north of St. Albert, and then finally settled in St. Albert in 1896. For the next 30 years, Perron would have a significant impact on the community.

Once established in St. Albert, Perron bought several local businesses, including the Windsor Hotel, which he renovated extensively; the general store located on main street (now known as Perron Street); and at the turn of the century, he opened the Perron Brickyard, employing 20 local men and operating until 1932.

After working as a businessman and entrepreneur, Perron began his career in politics in 1904 by serving on the first St. Albert Town Council. He was elected

as the second mayor of St. Albert in 1908 and served three terms. Additionally, Perron was the first Vice-President of the St. Albert Board of Trade, and the first President of the Alberta French Canadian Association.

During this time, Perron continued finding new business opportunities. In 1912, he purchased the 30-foot St. Theresa paddle wheeler to give boat tours of the Sturgeon River and Big Lake area to local residents. The boat later moved to Lac St. Anne when the local water levels dropped too low.

Perron’s life and the city’s were drastically changed when the Perron General Store was destroyed by fire in 1919. The fire was particularly devastating as the general store had served as a trading post for northern residents as far away as Athabasca, and as a casual meeting place for local residents. Following the fire, Perron opened a butcher shop across the street and rented another store in the mid 1920s on the site of his original General Store.

Although Perron left St. Albert for several years during an economic downturn in the 1920s, he eventually returned to live out his remaining days. Following his death in August 1931, his son Eugene Perron continued the family tradition and purchased the general store business that his father ran for the last years of his life.

Perron District HistoryThe downtown district of St. Albert experienced a period of great expansion at the beginning of the 20th century. By 1908, the down-town area featured two banks and hotels, several retail and service outlets, as well as a blacksmith, drugstore, and butcher shop. In the following years, the Dawson Block was completed and housed a bakery, bank, millinery shop, a drug store, and many other businesses. St. Albert’s Main Street was renamed Perron Street to recognize the impact and influence that Fleuri Perron had on the local business community and St. Albert as a whole.

Today, the Perron District is the heart of St. Albert, featuring historical buildings, colorful festivals, the St. Albert Farmers’ Market, as well as numerous shopping, dining, and cultural attractions. Use this visitor guide to get the most out of the Perron District today!

Little White School House

Travel back in time with a visit to the Little White School House, located on Seven Hills in St. Albert. The Little White School House, originally known as Father Jan School, was constructed in 1946 and began operating in 1948. It was built by the Alberta government to accomodate a growing student population after World War II. The design of the school is typical for its time. Few school houses of this era have been preserved as well, making it a significant building to the city.

For more information, please call (780) 459-4404Musée Héritage Museum

The musuem features exhibits such as In Focus: Photographing Alberta and Montana Frontier (May 29th-August 19th, 2012), the St. Albert History Gallery, and more.

The museum is located at 5 St. Anne Street and is open Tuesday - Saturday 10am to 5pm, and Sundays 1pm to 5pm. Admission is by donation.

Mission Hill is home to the Father Lacombe Chapel, Alberta’s oldest surviving building, built in 1861. Father Albert Lacombe and the Métis constructed a log building to serve the new St. Albert Roman Catholic Mission, which became the centre of the thriving French speaking Metis settlement of St. Albert. Today, the chapel has been restored to look much as it did in the early 1860s. When you visit the historic site, costumed interpreters take you on a tour of the chapel; crypt, where Father Lacombe and Bishop Grandin are buried; grotto and through the cemetery. Tours are available in English and French from May to September. Education programs and special events are offered.

Please let me know if this size is too small and I will reformat it. I tried to estimate what size you are accepting. I’d really like to include a photo but the sizes are too small to accommodate that! Martha.

Festivals

Rock’n AugustRock’n August is an international car show and music festival held in the Perron District. With hundreds of classic cars on display and great music, the week-long event is a major fundraiser for Diabetes research and education. Snowflake Festival -- Light Up St. Albert

Festivals (cont.)

Each year in the Perron District, St. Albert welcomes the Christmas Season with the annual Christmas Tree Light Up. At 6:30 p.m. the lights on the big spruce tree in front of the Community Hall are turned on to mark the beginning of the festive season. Outside, the hall is decorated with an ice sculpture and inside, families can find Santa and activities like coloring, gingerbread men decorating, and more.

The Perron District is also busy with crafts, story-time, fire performers at St. Albert Place, and live reindeer and wagon rides on Perron Street. People are encouraged to bring food donations for the Fill-A-Bus charity, run by St. Albert Transit drivers.
