FROM THE PASTOR, FR. ANTHONY MENDOZA

What If Our Candidates Didn’t Win?

This bulletin is being printed before the 2018 election is over, but we can be sure that some of us will be disappointed because of the defeat of our favored candidates. As followers of Jesus Christ, how should we react? Saint Peter and Saint Paul, two men who played very important roles in the early Church, offer us some wise advice. St. Paul, probably the world’s greatest missionary, said, “First of all, then, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). St. Peter, the first pope, said, “Give honor to all, love the community, fear God, honor the king” (1 Peter 2:17). These two great saints are telling us to pray for those in authority, to offer petitions and thanksgiving on their behalf, and to honor them. And who was in authority while these scriptures were being written? It was the oppressive Roman government, which prohibited the mere practice of Christianity! The emperor in charge at that time was the infamous Nero, who condemned Christians and had many of them brutally tortured and killed. So what reason would a follower of Jesus have to pray for those in authority who were so strongly against them? Because we know that God is greater than any government official. God never causes any evil, but He can bring about good even from the worst evil. This was shown most dramatically when He turned the cross, the horrible instrument of torture and death, into the means of our salvation on Good Friday. Even if our favored candidates were not elected on Tuesday, even if we think that terrible candidates were elected, we should pray for God to bring about great good through them.

At the same time, we should pray for the continual conversion and spiritual growth of our government leaders, including any whom we may strongly dislike! In the first centuries after the death of Jesus, the Catholic Church suffered horrible persecutions from the pagan Roman emperors. We can be sure that many disciples of Jesus were praying for the conversion of those emperors. Then, in 313 A.D. the pagan emperor Constantine I agreed to the Edict of Milan, which gave legal status to Christianity as a permitted religion. Soon after this, Constantine himself became a follower of Jesus! So let us not be discouraged by the results of the election, no matter who won or lost. May we continue to work for a more just nation, and persevere in prayer for our government officials.

¿Qué Pasa Si Nuestros Candidatos no ganaron?

Gracias y Bendiciones.

GRACIAS A

TODOS LOS

VETERANOS POR

SU SERVICIO Y

SACRIFICIO
