Permaculture at Abbaye Val Notre-Dame, Quebec Carl Albers As part of the Northern Nut Growers Association, Inc. Annual Conference, August 5-8, 2018 in Saint- Paulin, Quebec the group visited a permaculture planting at the Abbaye Val Notre-Dame. One of the things I noticed was that the monks had constructed a simple, yet effective deer exclusion fence. The posts used were native cedar with a panel of woven wire fastened on the bottom 4-feet with single strands of barbed wire fastened up to the top of the fence at a height of 10-feet in what looked like 1- foot intervals. They constructed some very functional entry panels that were mounted on heavy duty hinges. All in all a very simple, easily constructed deer exclusion fence that would protect any nut tree species from deer predation/damage.
