Food Drive in Bayonne Schools and BCB BankBranches for Make A Difference Day

Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the Bayonne Board of Education,participating religious schools, and BCB Community Bank are conductinga food drive from Tuesday, October 2, through Tuesday, October 23. As inpast years, the Bayonne Police Department is coordinating the food drivewith the schools, BCB, and the Bayonne Department of Public Works.

Bayonne police officers will be assisting with the pick-up and distributionof food donations. The drive is part of the annual, national Make A Differ-ence Day activities, which encourage volunteerism across America. Na-tional Make A Difference Day this year is Saturday, October 27. Mayor Davissaid, “The Make A Difference Day food drive provides the school commu-nity and the general public the opportunity to help restock our local foodpantries. Many of our fellow Bayonne residents depend on these pantriesto help feed themselves and their families.” Mayor Davis continued, “Iwould like to thank the people of Bayonne for continuing their generosityto this annual food drive in 2018.”

The White Glove Moving Company of Bayonne donated boxes for trans-porting and storing the food.

The Bayonne Board of Education and the participating religious schoolsare sending or have sent notices home with each student to explain thefood drive. The schools and two BCB Community Bank branches in Bay-onne, will serve as drop-off points for donations. The participating BCBBank branches are located at 4th Street and Avenue C, and at 24th Streetand Broadway. The Department of Public Works will pick up food fromthe schools and participating BCB Bank branches on Wednesday, October

24, and will deliver it to local non-profit organizations andreligious congregations that have food pantries.

The following nine food pantries will benefit from thefood drive: 1) the Bayonne Economic Opportunity Foun-dation (BEOF), 2) the Windmill Alliance/Highways, 3)Friendship Baptist Church, 4) Wallace Temple AME ZionChurch, 5) First Assembly of God Church, 6) St. VincentDePaul Roman Catholic Church, 7) St. Henry’s RomanCatholic Church, 8) St. Mary’s Star of the Sea RomanCatholic Church (Blessed Miriam Teresa Parish), and 9) Faith and VictoryDeliverance Church of God. If any other food pantries in Bayonne wouldlike to benefit from the food drive, they should contact Mike Elia in thePolice Department at 201-436-5477.

Students participating in the food drive should bring packaged, non-per-ishable food items to school by October 23, and may start as early as October2. Members of the general public may bring packaged, non-perishable foodto the donation boxes at the two participating BCB Bank branches in Bay-onne during banking hours from October 2 through October 23. Suggestednon-perishable food items include: canned tuna fish, boxed cereal, pastasauce, canned fruits, canned or boxed pastas, oatmeal, pudding cups, rice,macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, and jelly.

Make A Difference Day has inspired thousands of local volunteer effortssince it was established in 1992. The Bayonne food drive began in theearly 2000’s when then-Police Officer Tony Nardini organized support inthe community for restocking local food pantries. Those efforts won na-tional recognition.
