History of the Periodic Table
SECTION 1
![Page 3: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
¡ When the Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev heard about the new atomic masses he decided to include the new values in a chemistry textbook that he was writing
¡ Mendeleev hoped to organize the elements according to their properties
MENDELEEV AND CHEMICAL PERIODICITY
![Page 4: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
¡ He placed the name of each known element on a card, together with the atomic mass of the element and a list of its observed physical and chemical properties !
¡ He then arranged the cards according to various properties and looked for trends or patterns
![Page 5: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
¡ Mendeleev noticed that when the elements were arranged in order of increasing atomic mass, certain similarities in their chemical properties appeared at regular intervals !!
¡ Such a repeating pattern is referred to as periodic
![Page 6: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
¡ The second hand of a watch, for example, passes over any given mark at periodic, 60-second intervals
¡ The circular waves created by a drop of water hitting a water surface are also periodic
![Page 7: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
¡ Mendeleev created a table in which elements with similar properties were grouped together—a periodic table of the elements
¡ His first periodic table was published in 1869
![Page 8: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
¡ Mendeleev placed iodine, I (atomic mass 127), after tellurium, Te (atomic mass 128)
¡ This contradicted the pattern of listing the elements in order of increasing atomic mass
¡ It allowed Mendeleev to place tellurium in a group of elements with similar properties
![Page 9: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
¡ Reading horizontally across Mendeleev’s table, this group includes oxygen, O, sulfur, S, and selenium, Se
¡ Iodine could also be placed in the group it looks like chemically (includes fluorine, F, chlorine, Cl, and bromine, Br)
![Page 10: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
¡ Mendeleev’s procedure left several empty spaces in his periodic table
¡ In 1871, he predicted the existence and properties of the elements that would fill three of the spaces
¡ By 1886, all three elements had been discovered ¡ scandium, Sc, gallium, Ga, and germanium, Ge ¡ Their properties are very similar to those predicted by
Mendeleev
![Page 11: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
¡ Success of Mendeleev’s predictions persuaded most chemists to accept his periodic table and earned him credit as the discoverer of the periodic law
¡ Two questions remained ¡ (1) Why could most of the elements be arranged in the order of
increasing atomic mass but a few could not? ¡ (2) What was the reason for chemical periodicity?
![Page 12: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
¡ In 1911 à English scientist Henry Moseley examined the spectra of 38 different metals
¡ Moseley discovered a previously unknown pattern
MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW
![Page 13: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
¡ The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to nuclear charge, or the number of protons in the nucleus
¡ Moseley’s work led to both the modern definition of atomic number and the recognition that atomic number, not atomic mass, is the basis for the organization of the periodic table
![Page 14: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
¡ Moseley’s discovery was consistent with Mendeleev’s ordering of the periodic table by properties rather than strictly by atomic mass
¡ For example, according to Moseley, tellurium, with an atomic number of 52, belongs before iodine, which has an atomic number of 53
![Page 15: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
![Page 16: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
¡ Today, Mendeleev’s principle of chemical periodicity is correctly stated in the periodic law àThe physical and chemical properties of the elements are periodic functions of their atomic numbers
¡ When the elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number, elements with similar properties appear at regular intervals
![Page 17: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
¡ The periodic table has undergone broad change since Mendeleev’s time !
¡ Chemists have discovered new elements and synthesized new ones in the laboratory !
¡ Each of the more than 40 new elements can be placed in a group of other elements with similar properties
THE MODERN PERIODIC TABLE
![Page 18: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
PERIODIC TABLE à AN ARRANGEMENT OF THE ELEMENTS IN ORDER OF THEIR ATOMIC NUMBERS SO THAT ELEMENTS WITH SIMILAR PROPERTIES FALL IN THE SAME COLUMN, OR GROUP
![Page 19: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
¡ 1894 à English physicist John William Strutt (Lord Rayleigh) and Scottish chemist Sir William Ramsay discovered argon, Ar, a gas in the atmosphere that had previously escaped notice because of an absence of chemical reactivity
THE NOBLE GASES
Lord Rayleigh
Sir William Ramsay
![Page 20: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
¡ Back in 1868, another noble gas, helium, He, had been discovered as an element of the sun, based on the emission spectrum of sunlight
¡ In 1895, Ramsay showed that helium also exists on Earth
DISCOVERY OF HE
![Page 21: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
¡ To fit argon and helium into the periodic table, Ramsay proposed a new group
¡ Placed this group between the groups now known as Group 17 (the fluorine family) and Group 1 (the lithium family)
¡ 1898, Ramsay discovered two more noble gases to place in his new group, krypton, Kr, and xenon, Xe
![Page 22: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
!!
¡ The final noble gas, radon, Rn, was discovered in 1900 by the German scientist Friedrich Ernst Dorn
![Page 23: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
¡ The next step in the development of the periodic table was completed in the early 1900s
¡ Lanthanides à the 14 elements with atomic numbers from 58 (cerium, Ce) to 71 (lutetium, Lu)
¡ These elements are similar in chemical and physical properties
THE LANTHANIDES
![Page 24: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
¡ Another major step in the development of the periodic table à discovery of the actinides
¡ Actinides à the 14 elements with atomic numbers from 90 (thorium, Th) to 103 (lawrencium, Lr)
THE ACTINIDES
![Page 25: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
¡ The lanthanides and actinides belong in Periods 6 and 7, respectively, between the elements of Groups 3 and 4
![Page 26: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
¡ Periodicity with respect to atomic number can be observed in any group of elements in the periodic table
¡ Consider the noble gases of Group 18 ¡ The first noble gas is helium, He ¡ It has an atomic number of 2 ¡ The elements following helium in atomic number have
completely dif ferent properties until the next noble gas, neon, Ne, which has an atomic number of 10, is reached
PERIODICITY
![Page 27: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
¡ As you can see, the differences in atomic number between the Group 1 metals follow the same pattern as the dif ferences in atomic number between the noble gases
![Page 28: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
The Group 18 elements undergo few chemical reactions. This stability results from gases’ special e- configs. Helium’s highest occupied level (1s) is completely full. The highest occupied levels of other noble gases for stable octets. Generally the e- config of atom’s highest occupied level governs the chemical properties.
ELECTRON CONFIGURATION AND THE
PERIODIC TABLE
![Page 29: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
¡ Elements are arranged vertically in the periodic table in groups that share similar chemical properties
¡ They are also organized horizontally in rows, or periods !
¡ The length of each period is determined by the number of electrons that can occupy the sublevels being filled in that period
PERIODS AND BLOCKS OF THE PERIODIC TABLE
![Page 30: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
![Page 31: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
¡ In the first period, the 1s sublevel is being filled ¡ The 1s sublevel can hold a total of two electrons ¡ Therefore, the first period consists of two elements—hydrogen
and helium
![Page 32: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
¡ In the second period, the 2s sublevel , which can hold two electrons, and the 2p sublevel, which can hold six electrons, are being filled
¡ So, the second period totals eight elements
![Page 33: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
¡Filling of the 3s and 3p sublevels accounts for the eight elements of the third period
!!!!
¡Filling 3d and 4d sublevels in addition to the s and p sublevels adds 10 elements to both the fourth and fifth periods
¡Therefore, each of these periods totals 18 elements
![Page 34: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
¡ Filling 4f sublevels in addition to s, p, and d sublevels adds 14 elements to the sixth period, which totals 32 elements
![Page 35: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
¡ The period of an element can be determined from the element’s electron configuration
¡ For example, arsenic, As, has the electron configuration [Ar] 3d10 4s2 4p3
¡ The 4 in 4p3 indicates that arsenic’s highest occupied energy level is the fourth energy level
¡ Arsenic is therefore in the fourth period in the periodic table
![Page 36: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
¡ Based on the electron configurations of the elements, the periodic table can be divided into four blocks, the s, p, d, and f blocks
¡ The name of each block is determined by whether an s, p, d, or f sublevel is being filled in consecutive elements of that block
![Page 37: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
![Page 38: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
¡ The elements of the s block are chemically reactive metals
¡ The Group 1 metals are more reactive than those of Group 2
¡ The outermost energy level in an atom of each Group 1 element contains a single s electron
THE S-BLOCK ELEMENTS: GROUPS 1 AND 2
Potassium reacting with water
![Page 39: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
¡For example, the configurations of lithium and sodium are [He]2s1 and [Ne]3s1, respectively
¡The single electron is easily lost and helps to make the Group 1 metals extremely reactive
![Page 40: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
![Page 41: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
¡ The elements of Group 1 of the periodic table (lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, cesium, and francium) are known as the alkali metals
¡ In their pure state, all of the alkali metals have a silvery appearance and are soft enough to cut with a knife
GROUP 1 – THE ALKALI METALS
![Page 42: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
¡ Because they are so reactive, alkali metals are not found in nature as free elements
¡ They combine strongly with most nonmetals ¡ And they react strongly with water to produce
hydrogen gas and aqueous solutions of substances known as alkalis
¡ Because of their extreme reactivity with air or moisture, alkali metals are usually stored in kerosene or oil
![Page 43: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/43.jpg)
¡ The elements of Group 2 of the periodic table (beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, and radium) are called the alkaline-earth metals
¡ Atoms of alkaline-earth metals contain a pair of electrons in their outermost s sublevel
GROUP 2 – THE ALKALINE-EARTH METALS
![Page 44: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/44.jpg)
¡ Group 2 metals are harder, denser, and stronger than the alkali metals
¡ They also have higher melting points ¡ Less reactive than the alkali metals, but also too reactive to
be found in nature as free elements
![Page 45: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/45.jpg)
¡ Consider two special cases in the classification of the elements—hydrogen and helium
¡ Hydrogen has an electron configuration of 1s1, but it does not share the same properties as the elements of Group 1
¡ Hydrogen is a unique element, with properties that do not closely resemble those of any group
HYDROGEN AND HELIUM
![Page 46: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/46.jpg)
¡ Like the Group 2 elements, helium has an ns2 group configuration
¡ Yet it is part of Group 18 ¡ Because its highest occupied energy level is filled by two
electrons, helium possesses special chemical stability, showing the unreactive nature of a Group 18 element
¡ By contrast, the Group 2 metals have no special stability - their highest occupied energy levels are not filled because each metal has an empty available p sublevel
HELIUM
![Page 47: Periodic Law - WordPress.com · MOSELEY AND THE PERIODIC LAW! The elements in the periodic table fit into patterns better when they were arranged in increasing order according to](https://reader031.vdocuments.mx/reader031/viewer/2022021915/5ca8e22f88c99358648b792e/html5/thumbnails/47.jpg)
¡ Without looking at the periodic table, give the group, period, and block in which the element with the electron configuration [Xe]6s2 is located. !
¡ The element is in Group 2, as indicated by the group configuration of ns2. It is in the 2sixth period, as indicated by the highest principal quantum number in its configuration, 6. The element is in the s block.

¡ Properties of d -block (all metals) vary less and with less regularity than the main-group elements
¡ Atoms of d -block have from 0-2 e- in s orbital and 1-10 e- in d orbital
¡ e- in ns sublevel and (n -1)d sublevel are available to interact with surrounding
¡ Result: incomplete d sublevels responsible for many characteristic properties of d -block elements

¡ General DECREASES across the periods !
¡ Decrease is less than main-group elements b/c e- added to (n -1)d sublevel shield outer e- from nucleus !
¡ As number of e- in d increases, radii increase b/c of repulsion among e-

¡ In the 6th period, f-block elements fall between lanthanum (Group 3) and hafnium (Group 4) !
¡ b/c of increase in atomic number, atomic radius of hafnium is slightly less than zirconium, Zr (element immediately above it)
¡ Radii of elements following Hf in 6th period vary with increasing atomic number in the usual manner

¡ Like main group, generally increase across periods ¡ Unlike main group, first ionization energies generally increase
down each group ¡ b/c e- available for ionization in outer s sublevels are shielded
from increasing nuclear charge by e-s in incomplete (n-1) d sublevels

¡ E- in highest occupied sublevel always removed first ¡ For d-block this means outermost s sublevels ¡ Ex. Iron – [Ar]3d64s2 ¡ Loses two 4s before 3d ¡ Most d-block lose 2 e- to form 2+ ions ¡ Some commonly form 3+ also ¡ Group 3 only form 3+ ¡ Cu+1, Cu+2, Ag+1 ¡ Cations have smaller radii than atoms ¡ 2+ ions across period shows decrease in size that parallels
decrease in atomic radii
