Perinatal Loss and Grief by Diane Youmans RNC MSN
Nearly every person working in healthcare hasbeen affected by a perinatal loss in some wayeither through a family member friend or perhapsas a personal loss These events includepregnancy loss by miscarriage stillbirth neonataldeath adoption and unexpected outcomes ofpregnancy such as prematurity or birth defectsThese experiences and their resulting griefresponse affect women and their families for alifetime Sensitive and compassionate bereavement supportby healthcare providers can help families movethrough the grief response in a positive and healingfashion However we often find ourselves at a lossfor words and actions Our own fear of saying thewrong thing gets in the way of our desire to behelpful Here are some useful strategies for

Acknowledge the loss by first learning about themeaning of the loss ldquoI am so sorry can you tell meyour story I really want to listenrdquo Listen attentivelyto the story and avoid adding your own dialogue Listen for clues about the meaning of thispregnancy Break things up into smaller pieces for this familyso they are not overwhelmed ldquoWhat concerns youthe most right nowrdquo ldquoIs there something I can dofor you right nowrdquo Repeat this process as thisfamily moves through this journey This allows youto slow down and prevents the family from beingoverwhelmed with details
