SEMIAHMOO PROPOSED MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENTPublic Information Meeting | October 22, 2013

The Performing Arts Centre is envisioned as a place that will attract theatre, dance, and music artists from Surrey and beyond who want to create and perform in Surrey.

The proposed affordable theatre venue will address an identified need in South Surrey for a place that encourages and supports community use.

The theatre will provide a venue for young up-and-coming dancers, musicians, actors, designers, and technicians to learn and practice their craft.

In conjunction with the Contemporary Arts Gallery & Café, the theatre will help to create an innovative and exciting arts hub in South Surrey.

CONTEMPORARY ARTS GALLERY & CAFÉ

SEMIAHMOO PROPOSED MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENTPublic Information Meeting | October 22, 2013

The art space will provide a venue dedicated to a diverse range of contemporary art practices, performances, and exhibitions. Programming will be local, regional, national, and international in scope. The space may include a small library/resource centre, media lab, and screening capabilities.

A social enterprise café adjoining the gallery space will help finance the art programming.

The café and gallery will be a comfortable and inviting meeting place for people to gather around art as a means for exploration, experimentation, and connection with the world.

The proposed space will address an identified cultural void, as presently this kind of programming does not exist in South Surrey. (In Surrey, this is only available at the Surrey Art Gallery, which is often not accessed by those on the Semiahmoo Peninsula.)

LANDSCAPE INTENT

INSPIRATION FROM NATURE

The design intent is to draw on the natural forms and resources found in Semiahmoo and surrounding Surrey area. Working with the native wood, stone, gravels, and soils of the area, a comprehensive landscape plan will be developed that presents an expression of natural form with urban finish. Planting materials will be a combination of native and non-native trees and shrubs with a high textural quality that respond well to urban environments and the temperate conditions of Surrey. Emphasis on creating a site that detains and mitigates site storm water through phytroremediation and natural processes will be an essential component of the landscape design.

VERTICAL EXPRESSION

Translating the landscape palette onto building facade and edges is an important component of creating a true ‘interior to exterior’ connection; which is important for creating identity at key building entries and focal points.

PERMEABILITY OF SPACE THROUGH INSPIRED FORMS

The forms expressed on the building facade are inspired from nature. Photos shown here illustrate examples of a natural form being used to express a connection or a feature on a building facade, which presents additional opportunities for incorporation of landscape. Whether using a metal mesh for grafting vines or re-creating a Van Gogh painting, there is great opportunity to create an enriched experience of landscape that permeates from the building’s interior to exterior.

LANDSCAPE INTENT

CREATING SCALES OF PUBLIC SPACE

Creating a magnitude of different public spaces is an important component of the

landscape design. The entire grounds are wrapped in open landscape space,

and the landscape will unify the entries for the Performing Arts Centre, the café,

and extended uses. Focus will include providing a large public promenade

along 152nd, which opens into numerous seating plazas and socially programmed

spaces at the various entry points. Extending café space, and providing

opportunities to extend public art out into the landscape will be additional focuses for

the landscape design.

USE OF ART AS LANDSCAPE TO DELINEATE SPACE

There is potential to incorporate art into the landscape through either permanent fixed

landmarks, or by creating spaces where artwork can be exhibited in temporary

installations. The use of feature lighting in the spaces can further accentuate the urban

design for these components.

USE OF LIGHT TO FOSTER UNITY BETWEEN ELEMENTS

Lighting will play an integral role in animating the public space and plaza space at the numerous entries. It can also be used for feature landscape beds and to promote a strong

sense of visibility and security around the grounds of the building and surrounding walkways. Two key ways to create interest in the landscape with light are with use of colour or gradation

of light. The precedent images shown here are illustrative of these concepts.

DYNAMIC SITE CIRCULATION

Public open space wraps the perimeter of the entire site, allowing for a variety of scaled spaces and programming.
