I am delighted to introduce Trinity Laban’s Diary of Music Events for Spring 2014.

Though the majority of our performances take place either in the magnificent surroundings of the Old Royal Naval College or Trinity Laban’s own concert venue Blackheath Halls this term provides many opportunities to hear our students perform in other London locations.

From 16 January to 6 March 2014 Trinity Laban pianists will be performing free Thursday evening recitals in the Sammy Ofer Wing foyer at the National Maritime Museum.

The 2014 Daryl Runswick Composition Prize will be held in the intimate surroundings of the Cello Factory in Waterloo. The competing composers will present works inspired by First World War Propaganda posters.

Our wonderful Jazz Department will be holding their annual performance at London’s famous jazz venue Ronnie Scott’s on 24 February.

And finally, the Trinity Laban Gold Medal Showcase takes place on 16 January at Kings Place. This event presents an excellent opportunity to hear exceptional students from each department at Trinity Laban perform as they compete to win the prestigious Gold Medal.

Six elite musicians showcase their musical talents at the Trinity Laban Gold Medal Showcase.

The Gold Medal, awarded for excellence in performance or composition, is the most prestigious prize for musicians at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. Performers taking part in the showcase concert are nominated by Heads of Departments for their high standard of performance or creativity and their contribution to the musical life of Trinity Laban.

trinitY LaBan sinfoniaWIND AND STRINGSConducted by Andrew Sherwood and Ian Mitchell, the programme will include Grainger’s Lincolnshire Posy and Adam Gorb’s Awayday for Wind Ensemble, Constantin Silvestri’s Three pieces for Strings and Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No 1, performed by Trinity Laban pianist Kenneth O'Neil.

The wonderfully eccentric Lincolnshire Posy is a characteristically imaginative work, and as a bright overture there will be an arrangement by recent Trinity Laban composition student Andrew Gorman.

With a nod to Enescu, the challenging Three Pieces for Strings are in a characterful Romanian-folk style. Finally, Shostakovich’s Concerto takes the listener between giddy to serious, toying with the listener and somewhat thumbing its nose at tradition.

Acclaimed French conductor Diego Masson conducts an evening of French music. The programme features one of Debussy’s most famous works, a symphonic poem for orchestra based on Mallarmé’s poem of the same name. Debussy weaves rippling and meandering woodwind lines into a rich tapestry of sound that evokes the piece’s dreamy pastoral setting.

The Orchestra will also perform Berlioz’s famous tale of hopeless love and despair, Symphonie Fantastique. This programmatic symphony in five movements uses the repetition of an ‘idée fixe’ throughout the symphony to represent the protagonist’s beloved.

Trinity Laban’s CoLab module facilitates creativity and collaboration, empowering students to take artistic risks and work with a wide range of artists and art forms across music, dance and beyond. For two weeks in February, Trinity Laban students stop their regular classes and work collaboratively in groups to develop new ideas and projects. During this time, Trinity Laban will be alive with exciting events.

Acclaimed jazz trombonist and vocalist Malcolm Earle-Smith will direct a set of arrangements by Billy May, Bill Holman, and Oliver Nelson, featuring instrumentalists and vocalists from Trinity Laban.

Composer and saxophonist Julian Siegel will also lead an exciting set featuring the music of influential American jazz musician, composer and electric bass player Jaco Pastorius. Music will come from three of Jaco’s records including Word of Mouth, Invitation and his 1976 self-titled debut album.

The Soloists’ Competition showcases some of the Faculty of Music’s most talented performers, with over a hundred students participating in the first round in December.

Each performer will play a concerto (with orchestral parts reduced as piano accompaniment) to win the opportunity of performing their chosen concerto with the Trinity Laban Symphony Orchestra at Cadogan Hall on 24 Jun 2014.

Led by the UK’s leading jazz choral director, a thirty-five strong jazz choir will be joined by a talented band from Trinity Laban’s renowned jazz course. Past concerts under Pete’s direction have ranged from programmes of close harmony singing, with a focus on vocal improvising, to collaborations with the great Norma Winstone in a programme of European jazz.

Company follows anti-hero bachelor Robert as he makes his way through a series of encounters with April (the stewardess), Kathy (the girl who’s going to marry someone else), Marta (the peculiar one), as well as with his married friends.

chaPeL choir PerformancesTrinity Laban is the only UK Conservatoire with its own collegiate Chapel Choir, offering twelve scholars the opportunity of an Oxbridge – style choral education, leading several into the professional choral world. Only last year the Monteverdi Choir took four of their eight apprentices from our scholars, and we have alumni in many professional ensembles, choirs and choruses.

suPPorting trinitY LaBanJunior trinitYJunior Trinity is a Saturday school offering individual lessons, creative musicianship classes, ensembles, choirs and orchestras to talented students aged 9–19, as well as our String Time programme for younger students aged 3–11. Trinity Teenies for 3–5 year olds takes place on Friday afternoons.

Junior Trinity is a Centre for Advanced Training as part of the DfE Music and Dance Scheme. We are the only London Conservatoire registered as an Edexcel examination centre, providing GCSE, AS and A Level courses in Music and Music Technology.

Our results to date have been exceptional. Students have the opportunity to perform in weekly lunchtime concerts and termly masterclasses with eminent musicians as well as Symphony Orchestra summer tours. The Department also performs regularly in some of London’s most prestigious concert venues including Blackheath Halls, Cadogan Hall, LSO St Luke’s, and Southbank Centre and participates in collaborative music and dance projects with the Centre for Advanced Training at our Faculty of Dance.
