Won). Stephanodiscus hantzschii frequently evokes massive winter blooms in freshwater. We studied response of an algicidal effect against natural S. hantzschii blooms and planktonic community to the inoculation of an algicidal bacterium, Pseudomonas fluorescens HYK0210-SK09 (SK09) (Jung et al., 2008) in mesocosm experi- ments. The inoculation density of SK09 (5 × 10 6 cells mL 1 ) in small and large-scale mesocosms caused maximum 94.87% and 84.93% decrease of S. hantzschii cells, respectively. Therefore, the algicidal bacterium (SK09) was effective a bio-agent to control S. hantzschii blooms in field application as well as indoor enclosure experiments (Jung et al., 2008). In terms of physico-chemical factors, results of two mesocosms studies were different. In small-scale mesocosm, the pH and dissolved oxygen concentrations were decreased, while dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phosphate and silicate concentra- tions were significantly increased by activity of SK09. However, in large-scale mesocosm, the environmental factors were less varied than those of small scale mesocosms. These variations of environ- mental factors between small- and large-scale mesocosms may be affected by structure of each mesocosm setting such as enclosure scale, involvement of sediment and water exchange of a large- scale mesocosm. In planktonic communities, abundances of some phytoplankton species a little increased with rapidly decreased S. hantzschii cells. Heterotrophic flagellate and ciliate communities were significantly increased after bacterial assemblages, probably as a result of their consumption of increased SK09. Previous reports (Mayali and Azam, 2004) demonstrated that the bacterial bloom may be associated with an increase in algicidal bacteria, causing a secondary problem of the high abundances of algicidal bacteria. However, in this study, increasing bacteria were controlled by their predators such as heterotrophic protists. It is therefore possible to have stable biological control without disturbing the natural system because of self-cleansing action of nature. Chang). A seven-compartment anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) with an effective volume of 64.4 L was introduced to treat molasses wastew- ater. The performance characteristics and microbial communities in the ABR were investigated within the 120-day operation period. A chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of 93% was achieved in the ABR during the steady stage at the organic loading rate of 3.2 kg (m 3 d) 1 (Baloch et al., 2007). The alternation of microbial communities along the compartments were estimated by single- strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) (Marion et al., 2004) targeting the V1–V3 region of 16S rDNA genes during the steady state under the OLR of 3.2 kg (m 3 d) 1 . The results indicated that the population and the structure of microbial community in each compartment had no succession anymore, while a remarkable dif- ference was observed among the seven compartments. According to cloning and sequencing results of the bands excised from SSCP gels and phylogenetic reconstruction, the acidogenic bacteria, such as Escherichia sp., Anaerophaga sp., Corynebacterium sp., Anaerolinea sp. and Clostridium sp., etc., dominated in the first three compart- ments, while methanogenic bacteria such as Methanobacterium, Methanogenium, Methanosarcina, Anaeroliea, etc., existed in the last three compartments. The largest number of population was in the 4th compartment resulting from its function as a buffer zone. From the bands in the SSCP gels, 37 clones of eubacterium and 17 clones of archaebacteria were obtained (Diaz et al., 2006). The 37 clones of eubacterium were classified into the following six phyla: Pro- teobacteria, Chloroflexi, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria and Thermotogae with a percentage of 48.66%, 16.22%, 13.60%, 10.91%, 8.11% and 2.70% respectively.
