Why should I choose Perfection Prep when there are already many established test-prep companies?Some test-prep companies will not assign your child a specific tutor. They will assign whatever tutor fits into the schedule each session, so your child will get mixed messages on the best practices to use for test day. Other test-prep companies will assign a specific tutor to your child but you really don’t know whether you are getting a quality tutor. All tutors have to start somewhere, so you may end up paying a lot of money for an inexperienced tutor. Test-prep companies also have overhead costs to worry about: office space, marketing costs, and salaries to sales staff. Only a fraction of their hourly rate goes to the actual tutoring.

What are the benefits of 1 to 1 tutoring over a test-prep class? Which is cheaper?Test-prep classes can’t be tailored to your child’s needs. These classes tend to be lecture-heavy because it’s the only way to get through all the content. Test prep classes will likely be cheaper, but the minor increases in test scores that your child would likely get from such a class would satisfy a few people. Most people want to maximize score increases.

Do you work with children with learning differences?Absolutely. I have experience working with students with ADD/ADHD, Executive Function Disorder, and those on the autism spectrum. I can also help in the process of getting accommodations for your child to help him or her on test day.

Do you help with other aspects of the college admissions process?Yes. I can advise and provide resources on different steps of the admissions process, from writing personal statements to what sorts of scores different schools look for in admitting students.

How do I know whether my child should take the SAT or ACT?

With a few exceptions, the tests are very similar and most students don’t feel too much of a difference when taking them. Still, I think it is valuable to give students both a diagnostic SAT and an ACT to see if there is one they are more comfortable with and/or one that plays to their strengths. The good news is that all colleges and universities accept both the SAT and ACT as part of their admissions process.

What sets you apart from other tutors?

Many tutors have some experience with the SAT and ACT, but few have spent the sheer amount of time I have on these tests. I have seen dozens of these tests and have analyzed them to find out the skills being tested and how frequently those skills come up on each test. I have also come across many “quirks” of the tests that students can use to their advantage on test day. But, a great tutor has to be more than just knowledgeable. I provide a model for students that shows how taking these tests can be fun, and I build camaraderie so that students know I’m as invested in their success as they are.

TUTORING PHILOSOPHYA student needs to be actively engaged in the session: that is something I found early on in my tutoring. If you think back to your days of school, you probably liked to participate in class rather than listen to a teacher lecturing the entire time. I bring this idea of active participation to my tutoring.

Students are often surprised when they realize it is they who have done most of the talking during a tutoring session, and this is a sign that they are fully engaged and have taken personal ownership of their academic future.

Their learning is solidified by:

• Verbally explaining important concepts;• Receiving confirmation from the tutor• Writing down what they have learned.

My students have found a lot of success with this method, but there is no “one size fits all” method of teaching. Each student is different, so I use a variety of techniques to boost both their foundational knowledge and their confidence.

More than academics goes into success on test day; many students also need help with test anxiety or the motivation to do well on test day. Talking through these things is an important part of any successful tutoring plan, and test-taking strategies are a key element of the Perfection Prep program.
