An intense program of activities has been organized to commemorate the 10th anniversary of thedeath of the artist Belkis Ayón (1967-1999), an engraver of unanimously acknowledged technicalvirtuosity, who drew from collographs their fullest potential in works in which the theme of Abakuámythology, its secrets, its mysteries, its ritual ceremonies and, above all, her “cursed” woman, recurover and over again, to encourage a reflection on the recognition of ethnic and gender identificationand warn of the evident or surreptitious attempt to weaken them or manipulate them: 12 September-28 November: Nkame, anthological exhibition (1984-1999) of 83 works by the artistplus photographs which document Belkis’s participation in different events.15-19 September: Solo exhibition by Osmeivy Ortega, a graduate and professor of engraving at theSan Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts, who in 2004 received a special award from the TamarindInstitute of the University of New México, and a Special Mention at the 10th La Joven Estampa Prizein 2009.15 September, 3:30 pm: “A Meeting with Belkis”, lecture by the Puerto Rican artist and professorAntonio Martorell.22 September, 3:00 pm: Launching of Volume 3, 2009, of the magazine La Gaceta de Cuba, dedicatedto Belkis Ayón and illustrated by guest artists at the Espacio Ayón project.3:30 pm: Lecture “Presence and Influence of Abakuá Culture in Cuban Literature and Art, by the

This retrospective of Raúl Santoserpa, one of the masters of abstraction in Cuba, is composed by28 large paintings on canvas or Bristol board from several stages in the artist’s creative life,spanning from 1996 to the present day. The curator of this exhibition, Hortensia Montero, an expertwith the Fine Arts Museum in Havana, has emphasized “[the painter’s] mastery in using theexpressive power of stains and the use of colour in a perfect drawing, within a spatial ambienceof disturbing figurations” and “the intimate way in which he gives each stroke a profoundlysensorial design that recreate sensual flora and fauna, which float above an underlying support ofa micro world [that he has] created at will.”
