Hey brothers, it has been a while since we, IBAC, have done a newsletter. I am hoping that this will be the first of many in the coming years. IBAC is here for you, the alumni. I think at one point or another I have talked to almost everyone of you, but for those of you that I haven't, my name is David Clark. I pledged KDR in Fall 1997, Chi pledge class. During my 4 years at RIT I held the JT posi-tion and planned 4 formals. I absolutely loved my time in KDR and feel that KDR has made me the man I am today. After graduating, I held a director position on IBAC; Director Programs & Projects. I did this for a few years, working under IBAC Presidents Mike Jesse and Mike Mastrangelo. In April 2006, I took over as IBAC President after Brother Mastrangelo resigned. I feel very honored to be IBAC President. I also have a great Board of Directors to help me complete my duties as IBAC President.

Since I became president I have stressed that my major goal is to increase communication between not only the alumni but between the chapter and the alumni. We have over 200 alumni of Iota Beta and there is a large number we have either lost contact with completely or we don't do enough to keep them informed. I want to build off of the official Iota Beta web site www.KDRib.org and use that as a building block to move forward in bringing brother’s back and keeping brothers informed. If you have not been to the web site I would recommend going there. The chapter has done a great job in creating a message board for brothers only. It has worked to keep recently graduated alumni in contact with each other, the active chapter, and older alumni. Recently, we have even had some of the founding fathers sign up and post on the message boards. Some days the conversations are simple talking about sports, movies, gas prices. Other days we talk about what things were like "back in the day". The forums are also a place that the active chapter can ask for advice on issues (sometimes the alumni provides it even when not asked).

I know it doesn't seem that long ago, but 8 years ago we had our 10 year anniversary Red Rose formal. It was a great time when many alumni came back and got together to celebrate 10 years of Iota Beta chapter. Well, our 20 year anniversary is approaching and IBAC has already started making plans for this special occasion. The date and location have been set. It is May 1st, 2010 at the RIT Inn and Conference Center (www.RITInn.com). I am hoping for a great turn out. IBAC announced the date at Formal 2007 (3 years in advance) so that every brother could make every effort to attend. At this past Red Rose formal IBAC meeting we formally announced the location and signed the contract for the event. The RIT Inn is a great location for the Red Rose formal; they have everything we need for the weekend. There are meeting rooms for the annual IBAC meeting, plenty of hotel rooms, a large ballroom that can accom-modate 500 people. They have an indoor pool to relax and swim and it is very close to the RIT campus. I hope you all will make every attempt to join us in 2010.

Pete Stoffel has an article in this newsletter about two great fundraising campaigns we are having. Pete has done a lot of work setting up these funds, and I would like to very briefly talk about these and strongly encourage you to sign up to help the chapter. The first one is an official Iota Beta chapter scholarship though the KDR Foundation. This would create an annual scholarship that would be awarded to an active brother of IB every year at the KDR convention. The second is a capital campaign to raise money for the chap-ter directly. This campaign would award money to the chapter for reaching certain goals and standards (GPA, pledge class size, Greek life award). These two campaigns will help the chapter and members continue to succeed in the coming years. But we need your sup-port to help make this happen!

The two main alumni events during the year are O-Fest and Red Rose Formal. It would be great to see alumni at these events! O-Fest is always going to coincide with RIT Brick City Fest (Homecoming) which is normally Columbus Day weekend. The Red Rose formal is the first Saturday of May when Mothers Day is NOT that Sunday. During these two events is when IBAC has their annual meeting.

I hope you all will reach out in one way or another to IBAC and the chapter and let us know how you are doing. IBAC's e-mail is [email protected]. I would love to hear from you just to know how you are and where you are! I live in Northern Virginia and there are about 7 or 8 IB alumni in the area, maybe you are close to another alumnus and you don't know it.

Feel free to contact me for anything.

Fraternally,

David A. Clark

VOLUME 15, NUMBER 1

$20,000 for 20 Years, Twice

The idea has been kicked around for a while now. We should “Do something” for the 20th anniversary of our chapter at RIT. The date of the formal has been set and the details for the rest of that weekend in 2010 will be filled in. While we are planning for the 20th anniversary events the Alumni Corporation is also trying to plan for the chapter’s future. We asked our-selves, “What can we do to ensure that our chapter is still in ex-istence in another 20 years?” Financial support of our chapter and financial stability for our alumni corporation was one of the first things to come to mind.

The Iota Beta Alumni Corporation is starting a capital campaign to raise funds over the next three years for two impor-tant programs. The first is a $20,000 endowment for a Chapter Scholarship managed by the National Fraternity. The $20,000 endowment will provide for one $1,000 scholarship each year to an eligible active member of the chapter. Applicants are judged on three criteria:

Academic Performance, min GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. (40%)

Service to the campus and community (30%)

Service to Kappa Delta Rho Fraternity (30%)

Contributions to this scholarship fund are tax deducti-ble and investment returns in excess of distributions are returned to the fund. Eventually the principal of the fund will grow and the scholarship amount will increase. Disbursements are 5% of the scholarship endowment, with the scholarship increasing in $100 increments.

The second program we are raising an additional $20,000 for is more innovative. When we tried to answer the question “What can we do to ensure that our chapter is still in existence in another 20 years?” scholarship was only part of the answer. The full answer was summed up with what sounds like a mission statement, “[To] encourage actions and behaviors con-sistent with maintaining a large membership base, strong aca-demic performance and outstanding conduct in the Greek Com-munity.” With that goal in mind, an incentive program for the chapter was proposed. It has three main parts, below are the highlights without bogging down in the eligibility requirements:

Academic Incentive

A matching scholarship of $100 per pledge who qualifies for the National Fraternity’s “New Member Academic Achievement Scholarship Program”, whereby pledges that maintain a 3.0 or better GPA while pledging receive a $100 scholarship from the National Fraternity.

Incentives for Chapter GPA

$1,500 to the chapter for having the highest GPA of any Greek (IFC and Pan-Hellenic) Or-ganization at RIT

$1,000 for having the highest GPA of any IFC Fraternity

$700 for having the second highest GPA of any IFC Fraternity.

Recruitment Incentives

A sliding-scale incentive program for the chapter to achieve certain recruiting goals:

$500 for 10 new members in an academic year

$600 for 11 new members in an academic year

$750 for 12 new members in an academic year

$900 for 13 new members in an academic year

$1,100 for 14 new members in an academic year

$1,500 for 15 new members in an academic year

Outstanding Conduct in the Greek Community

A $2,000 reward for winning RIT’s Greek Chapter of the Year.

The funding for these awards is a challenge because it will consume the principle of the money we are raising for the 20th Anniversary of the Chapter. To partially offset this, the following steps are being taken:

The incentive program will not start until a minimum amount of money is pledged to the capital campaign of $11,000.

Recognize that the goals with large incentive payouts are not likely to be met every year, so the likely capital requirements would be reasonable.

That if this campaign drive for the 20th Anniversary is suc-cessful we will try to raise $25,000 for the 25th anni-versary. In five years we will see how effective this incentive program is and if additional funding for the program is required.

That the incentive program can be changed by the IBAC Board if achieving them is too easy, but that will only be done as a last resort.

What makes this program so powerful is that the chap-ter is not just receiving a financial handout from the Iota Beta alumni, but is earning it. And in so doing, they are making the chapter a stronger organization.

Page 3

Iota Beta Capital Campaign To Start This Year

Page 4: Peregrine - Fall/Winter 2008

How much does it cost to be a KDR? Over two-and-a-half GRAND! The costs of joining and being an undergraduate member of Kappa Delta Rho have risen sharply since the chapter was founded. By far the driving force behind that increase has been the cost of liability insurance. When the chapter tries to recruit a new member in the Fall, this is the increase to their cost of education they will be facing for their first year of college:

For a pledge crossing at the end of Fall quarter:

$360 National Initiation & Insurance

$ 0 Chapter Pledge Dues

$ 75 National Membership dues, Spring

$225 Chapter Membership Dues, Spring (includes $95 for Formal)

$660 Total

Starting their sophomore year an active brother pays for one whole year:

$205 National Membership Dues, Fall $130 Chapter Membership Dues, Fall

$ 75 National Membership Dues, Spring

$225 Chapter Membership Dues, Spring (includes $95 for Formal)

$635 Total

And if you add that up for four years of active membership, joining KDR adds $2,565 to the cost of your col-lege education!!! Which breaks down into:

$1,275 Four Years of National Fees

$ 910 Four Years of Chapter Dues

$ 380 Four Formals

We hope that you understand why the IBAC is working so hard to raise money for the 20th Anniversary. If our alumni don’t support the Iota Beta chapter financially then the cost of KDR membership hinders the fraternity’s re-cruitment or new members and the retention of current members.

op, he resigned as Consul. My first ac-tion as Consul was to attend the National Convention. At the Convention I met a wonderful group of Alumni that are very interested in seeing our chapter grow. I have invited many of them to come check out our chapter. This year, we are planning to show the campus the kind of gentlemen that make up KDR. We have many phi-lanthropy and community service events

in the works, as well as social events to spark growth in relations with some of the houses that we have become distant from. I am very optimistic about the fall. We have wonderful support from IBAC, RIT, and National to do great things. If we believe it, we can achieve it. Kyle Bamford

This past Spring has been a very interesting time for the Iota Beta Chap-ter. In the spring, a pledge was involved in an act of misconduct outside of our house. This act was affiliated with the house as the pledge was drinking earlier that night at a brother's apartment. After a lengthy judicial and appeal process, the chapter did come out strong.

Unfortunately, due to Pat's co-

Page 5

Consul’s Report

It started innocently enough. The New England Patriots had just finished beating every team they had faced in the regular season. They had also just as easily beat very team in the playoffs giving them a Super Bowl birth against a team they had already beaten.

The NY Giants had differ-ent ideas though. They felt confident after their end of the season loss to the Pats. They felt they now knew what it would take to beat the favorites. It was turned into a game plan and executed perfectly for their second “against-all-odds”, “snowball’s chance in hell”, “will only happen when pigs fly” Super Bowl victory (we all know about the first one in Super Bowl XXV).

OK, by now you are probably thinking, what the heck does this have to do with KDR? Well, in the interest of good natured fun, and a touch of revenge from past evil emails, I sent Brian “Gizmo” Weiner an email to gloat over the Pats improbable loss. I felt other brothers would enjoy the jab so went very

quickly through some addresses I had and added a bunch of brothers to the distribution list.

What happened next took me and many others by surprise. Suddenly brothers were chiming in to pile on Gizmo. Others were voic-ing their support for him. The whole ordeal however got many brothers talking to each other, some of whom haven’t been heard from in years.

Now I wish I could claim this was part of a master plan to reconnect brothers, especially since I’m the new Alumni Relations Director. Sadly, I can’t. If I knew what would happen, I would have ensured many more brothers were included. I do apologize for that.

Dear Brother:

This Spring quarter the Iota Beta chapter had an incident that brought it before RIT’s Hearing Board and, later this summer, before the KDR National Judicial Board. To prevent misinformation spreading around this incident, below are the facts as we, the Iota Beta Alumni Corporation, understand them. On April 26th, 2008 Brother Kiernan French, a senior at RIT, had a gathering at his apartment in Colony Manor. There wereapproximately 6 brothers there and a few pledges from the Spring 2008 pledge class in attendance at various timesthroughout the evening. One of the pledged, Mitch Leigerot, left the apartment and walked back to his dorm room floor. While at his dorm room he was hanging out with other residents and they started messing around/horse-playing. The next morning one of the ladies that Mitch was with called RIT campus safety and said she was sexually assaulted. Campus safety conducted an investigation and interviewed Brother French, Pledge Mitch and other people. RIT decided that this was a KDR event and, because pledges were present when alcohol was present at a chapter event, charged the chapter with hazing. They also charged Brother French with providing alcohol to minors. National and IBAC also conducted their own investigation. There was an RIT hearing where Consul Nevius represented the chapter and facultyadvisor Brenda Mastrangelo tried to defend the charges against the chapter. The judicial hearing found us guilty andsanctions were passed down. The chapter appealed the decision from the judicial board and we were found NOT guilty ofhazing or of it being an official KDR event. RIT requires 33% of the active membership for it to be considered an officialevent. There were not 33% active KDR members at the gathering. Based on National and IBAC's investigation, a punishment was handed down from IBAC that the 2008 Red Rose Formal bedry. There will also be a T.I.P.S program (Training for Intervention ProcedureS) run in the fall by Executive Director of KDR Joseph Rosenberg. The chapter must also complete 300 hours of community service by 2009. RIT's punishment, even though the chapter was found not guilty upon appeal, was that the chapter is on deferred suspension and deferred removal from the Greek dorms. We are on deferred suspension for 1 year, until April 13th, 2009. Basically, ifthe chapter steps out of line in the coming year, the consequences will be much, much greater. At the National Convention this year, the chapter will go before the National Judicial board and, if found guilty, will receive additional punishment from National. Pledge Mitch has not crossed to brotherhood and is not planning on returning to RIT inthe fall. Due to the complexities of the alleged charges, IBAC conducted a thorough investigation as previously stated. We wanted to know all of the facts before making any statement. The last thing needed is half-truths and rumors floating around. We are confident that the punishments imposed are fair and in line and that the Chapter as well as the IBAC board has learned from this incident. The matter will be considered closed after the National Judicial Board renders a decision. If you have any questions regarding this incident please do not hesitate to contact me.

originally started working for each sum-mer since 1987. That company in now called Lenox Tool. They are a subsidiary for Newell-Rubbermaid. His years of hard work paid off and he became a Manufacturing Man-ager, supervising tool production. After six years, he received a promotion and moved into Purchasing where he has been a Buyer for the last four years. His current job requires contact with various countries on six conti-nents with some travel. His most recent excur-sion had him in Europe where he visited Eng-land, Spain, and Swit-zerland.

Admit it, you’ve asked yourself that question a hundred times since graduation. Is Brian Stumm still doing KDR stuff? Does Dave Clark still plan Formals? Does Kiernan French plan on wearing his kilt to his wedding?

Well, in an effort to help you sleep at night, The Peregrine will be bringing you a short update on the lives of brothers after graduation. We’ll bring you the low down on family, career and anything else that has happened since the day they left “Brick City”.

Our first candidate is one of the original founders of our chapter: James “Biggus” Donahue. Jim graduated from RIT in 1991 (one of the first KDR alumni ever!) with a BA in Photography. During his time as a KDR undergrad (pin #6, Alpha class), he held various positions one of which was President of JPF.

After graduation, Biggus went to work full time for the tool company he

Jim has lived in Hampden, MA for seven years spending hours on end maintaining his house. He lives with

Sarah, his wife of eight years, and their two children: Abby (5 1/2 years old) and Will (3 years old). Abby is just starting school and is very excited to ride the school bus.

Biggus is proud to have helped to create KDR Iota Beta but more so for the less tangible re-wards. “The life long friends that I’ve made through KDR are very important to me. Even if its been 15 years since I’ve seen some-one, its like we just talked last week.”

The second year, things were stepped up a bit. Every Bills fan was given a “swirlie”. It took two tries for them to get me though because the first time I was “thrown” through the front window! OK so the glass I was leaning up against broke when they tried to grab me but I like my version bet-ter.

What are your best memo-ries of 171 Westminster? Write them out and we will include them in future issues.

Here is a blast from the past! What a classic picture taken at a historic location. For any alumni that are not familiar, this was at 171 West-minster Ave.

Four brothers originally moved in together off campus: Rafi Isaac, Mark Nowakowski, Ed Smith, and Don Pohler. It became our frater-nal “house” where many good times were had. The basement held many parties with a bar in the back, a DJ booth, a mini dance floor, and a bumper pool table.

One of the things I most remember were the Super Bowl parties there. The first two years the Buffalo Bills were in the Super Bowl, KDR IB had a party at 171. The first one was a heartbreaking loss to the NY Giants and since our hosts were all from NYC, they made sure we knew who won.
