2 Mixed-Use Building

Mixed-Use BuildingArchitecture Studio 3The city of South San Francisco planned to revitalize Linden Ave, linking it to the existing downtown commercial hub, on nearby Grand Ave. My team’s design focused on a mid-scale design, with twenty units ranging one bedroom to three bedrooms. The C-shaped building allows natural light to reach all the units, while the courtyard allows for a calming transition space as one leaves the business of Linden Ave and walks toward his or own residence.

Wall and Roof Detail

The design problem called for a structural system to support for a community pool building, based on a given plan. This solution uses brick masonry to provide insulation for the building, especially the main pool area with its humidity-induced temperature fluctuations. The ventilation system provides natural ventilation through the retractable vents both on the roof and ground level. A mechanical ventilation system supports the natural ventilation when it cannot adequately regulate the pool area’s humidity. Finally, the steel truss system supports long span of the roof to leave the pool area, one continuous space.

Poetry LibraryCommunity Design OutreachThe International Poetry Library of San Francisco (IPLSF) needed a permenant place to house its growing physical and digital colllection of poetry books, as well as host readings, workshops, and other poetry events for the thriving multi-ethnic and multi-lingual poetry community in San Francisco. The remodel design provides for a performance space, bookstore, quiet study rooms, a children’s section, and lounge areas.

I contributed to this group effort through drawing up the as-build conditions, aiding in the schematic design of the remodel, as well as drawing floor plans for the Ground and 2nd Floors

8 Bamboo Bridge

Bamboo BridgeArchitecture Studio 4This pedestrian bridge spans across a theoretical gap 30’-0” wide and 6’-0” deep. The arching of the bridge distributes the weight of the bridge towards its connections to either side of the river. Finally, its bamboo framing gives the bridge structural integrity similar to that of steel in a natural and sustainable form.

10 St. Francis Chapel

Site Perspective

St Francis ChapelDirected Study This design arose from a directed study course and capstone project intersecting the disciplines of Catholic Studies, Great Books, and Architecture.

This chapel shall provide St. Ignatius Church a space for the commemoration, meditation, and veneration of one the most beloved saints, St. Francis of Assisi. The symbolism in it draws heavily from I Fioretti di San Francesco (The Little Flowers of St. Francis), an early poetic account on his life. The chapel highlights St. Francis’ care for animals and nature, his peace-loving demeanor, and his intimate devotion to the Christ he zealously dedicated his life and ministry to serve.

Haiti Clinic HousingCommunity Design OutreachA medical clinic in Haiti needed housing for its nursing students and long-term visitors. The design provides a campus with single story and double story units, each with a bathroom and kitchenette, all with references to the Ti Kay tradition of Haiti. The design also provides an outdoor communal eating space and a common garden for all the residents.

In this project, I designed the communal outdoor pavilion and provided the write-ups for the previous phase of the project. The pavilion provides a communal space for not only cafeteria-style meals, but also space for workshops and other events. Its design takes many of the features from the housing, in order to provide visual continuity with the rest of the campus.

Rome Case StudiesDrawing from Architecture in RomeDuring the spring semester of 2011, I studied in Rome, Italy. During that time I enrolled in an architectural survey course called “Drawing from Architecture in Rome”. In that class, we sketched and made measured drawings of a number of notable buildings in Rome’s history, ranging in various historical periods, aesthetic styles, and construction materials.

Among the buildings we visited were Templo di Portuno (Temple of Portunus), Il Tempietto di San Pietro in Montorio (The Little Temple of St. Peter on the Golden Hill), San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane (St. Carlos of the Four Fountains), Casa della Gioventù Italiana (House of the Italian Youth), and Museo dell’Ara Pacis (Museum of the Ara Pacis).
