Trailer Analysis

I analysed the trailer for the 2010 film 'Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief' which explores the life of a teenage boy who is half mortal and half god and goes on a quest to find his father who is Poseidon, the water god and retrieve the stolen lightning bolt.

Most of the shots taken were establishing shot illustrating to the audience that the film will explore many places and adventure will be focused broadly. Most of the shots that were taken in the museum had low lighting symbolising a tense and serious atmosphere. This coincides with the voiceover of the character speaking when he tell the protagonist about the three gods. This dialogue is important as the audience are essentially given an insight into the plotline whereby we can hear the protagonist being told he is half mortal and he is not safe.

The issue of safety is further fuelled by the amplified sense of foreboding music used to create an atmosphere of impending danger to create excitement and a sense of immediacy in the audience. The use of symphonic music relates to the storyline of the gods in which spirituality is displayed effectively. Furthermore, contrapuntal sounds are also used to add effect to the fight scenes as the boy is facing a dangerous journey and will be faced with harsh obstacles on the way.

The editing mainly consists of fast cuts giving the audience the impression that this is an action packed film. Finally the voiceover and the amplified crescendo builds ups to a great climax which draws the audiences into wanting more which makes this trailer effective.

Although the director is not mentioned by name, the trailer does tell the audience that the director is the same as the first two Harry Potter films implying that the audience who found those films entertaining will also find this film interesting. Also, by doing this it is adding commercial value to the film as it attracting the Harry Potter fan base as well.
