technology. Apart from theregular classroom lectures,IIM-I has a component on in-ternational exposure and aninternship at a social organi-zation.

The selection for this un-dergraduate programme will bebased on an aptitude and in-terview and the minimum eli-gibility to seat for the inter-view is 60% in Class XII. Thedetails regarding the eligibilitycriteria will be revealed by theIIM-I authority in a few days. The tuition fee for the firstthree years will be Rs.3 lakhper annum and for the next twoyears it will be Rs.5 lakh ayear.

leges, five are government in-stitutions, one each in Bihar,Andhra Pradesh and UttarPradesh and two in West Ben-gal. It also approved three pri-vate medical colleges inGujarat, one each in MadhyaPradesh, Andhra Pradesh andKarnataka. Two other privatemedical colleges have been ap-proved in Punjab, three inTamil Nadu and three in UttarPradesh.

21 New Medical Colleges.....-Contd from Page-1....

For the increase in seats, the MCI received 104 appli-cations from alreadyrecognised colleges. Of these,43 were disapproved and 61were inspected. Of all thesecolleges, only 33 could fulfilthe criteria and were given let-ter of permission for increas-ing their seats. Eighteen ofthese are private colleges and15 are government ones.

The Delhi High Court onFriday came to the rescue

of an OBC student who quali-fied for the joint entrance ex-amination (JEE) for admissionin IIT engineering colleges butwas denied admission due to atechnical glitch while apply-ing online for the counselling.

A vacation bench of Jus-tice M.L. Mehta issued noticeto the government and chair-person of JEE asking them tofind a way to accommodate 18-year-old Jitendra KumarBansal, who secured 748thrank in the OBC merit list inthis year's JEE examination.

The student approachedthe court for the issue of writof mandamus (meaning tocommand) seeking productionof records with regard to theprocedure for admission tovarious undergraduate coursesin the IITs conducted by JEE-2011, especially the procedureas to the 'Choice Filling' online.

"The petitioner got him-self registered online, loggingon to JEE counselling onlineportal as a first step for theonline counselling. Accord-ingly, Bansal received theprinted version of the resultfrom chairman, JEE-2011, IIT

Court relief to OBC studentdenied admission to IIT-Delhi

Delhi," said the petition.Later, he paid the registra-

tion fee and sent the requisitecopies of the documents to thechairman, JEE, IIT Delhi.

Meanwhile, Bansal wasnot able to register himself forthe counselling, which he al-leged was because of failure ofthe IIT's electronic server.

After his repeated re-quests to IIT Delhi directorand chairman to allow him ad-mission failed to generate anyfavourable and concrete re-sponse, he knocked the court'sdoor.

Justice Mehta observed:"Since the candidate has quali-fied the examination, IITshould find a way to accom-modate him. Imagine the hard-ship he will face if his plea isnot considered."

"The boy who has made itto this level should not be de-nied the right to appear in thecounselling since it was only atechnical error," he noted.

Since the last counsellingfor admission is on July 10,the court has asked IIT Delhito file its reply on July 4. "Youfind out a way or the court willissue an appropriate order,"the bench said.

Snoring is No Laughing Matter

Surgery for Sleep ApneaSurgical intervention may

be a viable alternative for someOSA patients; however, it isimportant to keep in mind thatno surgical procedure is uni-versally successful. Every pa-tient has a different shapednose and throat, so before sur-gery is considered your ENTSurgeon will measure the air-way at several points andcheck for any abnormal flowof air from the nose to lungs.

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty(UPPP) - If the airway col-lapses at the soft palate, aUPPP may be helpful. UPPPis usually performed on pa-tients who are unable to toler-ate the C-PAP. The UPPPprocedure shortens and stiff-ens the soft palate by partially

removing the uvula and reduc-ing the edge of the soft palate.

Radio Frequency (RF) ofthe Soft Palate uses radiowaves to shrink the tissue inthe throat or tongue, therebyincreasing the space in thethroat and making airway ob-struction less likely. Over thecourse of several treatmentsthe inner tissue shrinks whilethe outer tissue remains un-harmed.

L a s e r - A s s i s t e dUvuloplasty (LAUP) is a sur-gical procedure that removesthe uvula and surrounding tis-sue to open the airway behindthe palate. This procedure isgenerally used to relieve snor-ing and can be performed bythe ENT surgeon uner generalanesthesia.

Hyoid Suspension - Ifcollapse occurs at the tonguebase, a hyoid suspension maybe indicated. The hyoid boneis a U-shaped bone in the necklocated above the level of thethyroid cartilage (Adam'sapple) that has attachments tothe muscles of the tongue aswell as other muscles and soft

tissues around the throat.Theprocedure secures the hyoidbone to the thyroid cartilageand helps to stabilize this re-gion of the airway.

Genioglossus Advance-ment (GGA) - GGA was de-veloped specifically to treatobstructive sleep apnea, andis designed to open the upperbreathing passage. The proce-dure tightens the front tonguetendon; thereby, reducing thedegree of tongue displacementinto the throat. This operationis often performed in tandemwith at least one other proce-dure such as the UPPP or hy-oid suspension.

Maxillomandibular Ad-vancement (MMA) - MMAis a procedure that surgicallymoves the upper and lowerjaws forward. As the bones aresurgically advanced, the softtissues of the tongue and pal-ate are also moved forward, again opening the upper air-way. For some individuals, theMMA is the only techniquethat can create the necessaryair passageway to resolve theirOSA condition.
