Relay�for�Life

Therearemany“greatcauses”thatwesupport.Virtuallyeverynon-profithashaddonationsandgrantsreducedbecauseoftheeconomicdownturn.ThatincludesRelayForLife,my“charityofchoice.”TheRelaytakesplacethelastSaturdayinAprilatthesportscomplexstadium.ThisyearitwillbeonApril28.

Iaskthatyousupport,andcontinuetosupport,RelayforLife.TheRelayisafundraiserfortheAmericanCancerSocietyandisusedtohelpfindacure.Iwouldguessthatcancerhassomehowtouchedeveryone.Formyselfandmywife,Rachelle,cancerhasclaimedthelivesofthreeofourfourparentsandcanceralsohastouchedoneofhersisters,mybrotherandseveralin-laws.

IbecameinvolvedwithRelayafewyearsagowhenIwasinvitedtohandoutmedalstocancersurvivorsatthestartoftheRelay.Iwasdeeplytouchedbythesurvivors,whichincludedtwoyoungchildrenwhowereprobably10or11yearsold,fartooyoungtobebattlingsuchaseriousillness.

MywifeandIcamebacktotheRelaythatnighttofindthebaseballstadiumatthesportscomplextransformed.Luminarieslinedthetrackaroundtheballfieldandthebagshadmessages:“Iremembermydad”…”Wemissyou,mom”…andothertouchingcomments.LuminarieswereinthebleachersandononesideofhomeplatethelightsspelledoutHOPEandtheothersidespelledoutCURE.

That’swhenitbecamemycharityofchoice.

SoeveryApril,Iallowtheaudiencetoshavemyhead.Wehavesomenarrowhairclippersand,for$5,youcancomeupandtakeaswipe.Ialsohavebeenthetargetinthedunktank.It’samazinghowgoodpeopleareatthrowingsoftballs!

TheinitialorganizingoftheRelaystartedinJanuary.Teamsareformedandtheydofundraiserssuchasnightgolftournaments,dances,spaghettidinnersandotherevents.It’snottoolate;youcanformateamatanytime.

TheRelaytakesplaceatthesportscomplexstadium.Itstartsabout6p.m.andgoesallnight.Thereisatleastonepersonwalkingthetrackallnightlongandmanyteamssetupboothstosellcookies,coffee,hotdogsandtrinketstocontinueraisingmoney.Thefamiliespitchtentsintheoutfieldandthekids(eventually)gotosleep.

Joinus.Youdon’thavetobeasponsororbepartofateam.JustcomeoutApril28duringtheeveningandyouwillbeastounded.Itisagreatcommunityeventforeveryone.

Peoriahostsitsfirstmusicfestival,March3,attheformerSports&EntertainmentDistrict,newlynamed“P83”--Peoria at 83rd Avenue!Thehottestentertainmentareainthecitycelebratesitsfreshnewnameandredevelopmentplan(seeP83AZ.comwebsite)withrockmusicandabaseballgame.TheSeattleMarinersstartthedayoffwiththeMLBspringtrainingseasonopenerfollowedbyahugemusicfestival(4p.m.-9p.m.)withheadlinerSeattle-basedrockband,Candlebox.

Sincethefirstplungeinoureconomy,Ihavefoundmyselfpainstakinglyfollowingthemarkettrendsandeconomicanalystsaboutwhereweareandwhattoexpectfortheforeseeablefuture.

Afterwehaveallwaitedtoomanyyearsforgoodnews,Iamfinallystartingtohearthatthingsareimproving.Theeconomistsareforecastingaslowandsteadyincreaseinjobs,growthandstability.Iamalsogettinginquiriesfrombusinessesandhomebuilderswhoaretalkingaboutputtingontheirglovesagain.

AsMesquiteresidents,Idon’thavetoremindyouthatweareinaveryuniqueareaoftheCityandtheValley.Surroundedbyvastamountsofbeautifulopenspace,thepossibilitiesareimmense.Wehaveopportunitiesforlargemedicalfacilities,schoolsofhigherlearning,andlucrativeemployers.Strategicallypreservingopenspaceisalsoatoppriority.

TherearemanyitemstopursueforNorthernPeoria,butthatiswhatplanningisabout–prioritizing,budgetingandsecuringpossibilities.IamdeterminedtopositionnorthernPeoriasoexternalfactorscanandwillalignthemselvesinourfavor.IamproudtosaythatIamworkingeverydaytomakethemostofeveryuptickinoureconomyforthebenefitoftheresidentsofourgreatCity.

Overview�TheCityofPeoriaCommunityServicesDepartmentoffersrecreationprogramswhicharesupportedbyuserfeespaidbyparticipantsforeachprograminwhichtheyregister.TheCommunityServicesDepartmentiscommittedtomakingitsprogramsaccessibleandaffordabletoallthecitizensofPeoria.TheYouthScholarshipProgramenablestheCommunityServicesDepartmenttofulfillthiscommitment.

Eligibility�Requirements�Toqualifyforreducedfees,theparent(s)orlegalguardian(s)oftheparticipantmustmeetthefollowingguidelines: 1. Participateinastateorfederalassistanceprogram:

•� �AllparticipantsintheYouthScholarshipProgrammustpayaminimumof$5perprogramtoberegistered.

•� �Scholarshipsareissuedforregistrationfeesonly,allsuppliesandothercostsaretheparticipant’sresponsibility.

•� �ParentswhoseannualincomefallswithinfederalHUDlowincomeguidelineswillbeconsideredforscholarshipsinthefollowingincrements:20%,40%,60%&80%

•� �Documentationofguardianship,participationinastateorfederalassistanceprogramand/orannualincomemustbesuppliedbeforeascholarshipmaybeawarded.Documentationforannualincomemustbefromthepreviousyear’sFederalandStateincomewithattachedW-2wagestatementtaxforms.Documentationisvalidforonecalendaryear(Jan.–Dec.).
