HEATHFIELDstation isundergoingama-jor makeover as part of the Park n RideWorld Cup project, which began in 2010.
A large area on the Bergvliet side of the sta-tion is being prepared for improved parkingand safer walkways.
Lighting is to be upgraded and the stationwill be easier on the eye, as soft andhard land-scaping work is on the cards.
The other four stations included in theR11m upgrade are Steenberg, Diep River, Ke-nilworth and Claremont.
The work is estimated to be completed
within three to five months.Ward 71 councillor Penny East says the
work is quite advanced: “The idea is to makethe Park n Ride facilities safer, cleaner andmore comfortable for motorists and encour-age them to make use of the public transport. The road capacity is over-stretched and theidea is to reduce carbon emissions. We alsohope to install lock-up facilities for bicyclesto link up with the new cycle lanes.”
The Directorate of Transport, Roads andStormwater says the aim is to “promote a di-versity of travelmodes andpractices thatwillinfluence the choices made by commuters inorder to reduce the number of vehiculartrips, minimise travel time and optimise
travel costs, especially during peak hours”.At Steenberg station there will be 18 more
parking bays for motorists, improved light-ing and landscaping.
Diep River’s parking area will be upgradedand safe, convenient waiting areas providedfor commuters.
Landscaping and lighting will be improvedand a new pedestrian sidewalk provided sopeople will be able to walk safely from DeWaal Road to the station. Pedestrian cross-ings and traffic calming measures will alsobe put in place.
On the eastern side of Claremont station, the rough surface will be tarred and thestormwater facilities upgraded. Better light-
ing and some landscaping is also planned inthe parking area.
At Kenilworth, a pedestrian sidewalk willbebuilt along the front of the stationbuilding, leading to a new demarcated road crossing.
Resurfacing and hard landscaping areplanned for the parking area. Future up-grades will focus on stations located on thecentral and northern line from Cape Town toKhayelitsha and Cape Town to Bellville.

RememberingRememberinga great mothera great motherDear reader,
I once again dedicate mycolumn to my beautiful, courageous mother whopassed away 17 days ago af-ter living with breast can-cer for years.
I also dedicate this col-umn to all those who havelost their mothers and toevery individual and organ-isation championing thefight against cancer.
This is the most difficultpiece of writing I’ve had to do in my 20-year career and I am writing every wordwith a broken heart that yearns for mymother.
The daymymom died, my entire worldceased to exist and after two weeks of un-bridled grieving,my pain at losingmy be-loved mother is as intense as the day shewas diagnosed with cancer.
I am not alone in my loss as my motherleft behind a legacy of love, generosity, in-spiration and tenacity.
In our home, she advocated the impor-tance of spirituality and education.
She touched the lives of many – oftenin ways her husband and six childrenlearned of only after her death.
My mother inspired her younger sisterto work and make her own money in anera when women stayed at home.
My mother always had kind words tosay about others, regularly sent mone-tary gifts to the mosque, offered a warmmeal and groceries to anyone whostepped into our home and always gavethe gift of her smile, even when she hadthe most excruciating pain.
I was blessed to have slept beside mymother the last night of her life and to re-main with her until the end.
This was painful, but I would not have
had it any other way.The day before my moth-
er died, many of her neigh-bours visited and saidprayers at her bedside.
Nearly everyone left cry-ing.
This is how my mothertouched lives. Yes, she wasa fiery, strong, independ-ent, smart woman whoachieved her goals andwho, even throughout herillness, remained thematri-arch, giving her family
clear directives.At the same time,mymotherwas a soft,
loving, deeply-caring wife, mother,grandmother, great-grandmother, sister,aunt, friend and neighbour.
My family and I continue to drawstrength from one another, and from thetorrent of love, support and compassionfrom relatives, friends and colleagues –for which we are very grateful.
Among the many beautiful messageswe’ve received, were these poignantwords: “My mother is the keeper of mychildhood and the historian of my life...”
The keeper of my childhood is gone;that chapter of my life has closed.
My mother was my mummy, my bestfriend, my role model, my confidante, myfan, my financial advisor, my counsellor.
She lovedme in a way no other can andwill.
I have been truly blessed and honouredto have had her as my mother and willcontinue to love and cherish her and mymemories of her, forever.
Till next time, go well!ConnectED is a weekly column by

EACH day is a precious gift for Reza Price(15) and his family as they anxiouslyawait news of a bone marrow donor whocould give him new life.
The Grade 9 pupil at Westerford HighSchool in Newlands has weekly and bi-week-ly blood transfusions at the Red Cross Chil-dren’s Hospital.
After the transfusions he feels well enoughto go to school, but often feels too ill to contin-ue lessons.
In the Price home, in Pinati Estate,Lansdowne, there is a sense of underlyingcalm which is closely guarded by his motherZeenat.
This despite the ever-increasing oddsbuilding against her eldest son, Reza.
Four years ago, the Price family had theirworld turned upside down when Reza, then12, was diagnosed with Aplastic Anaemia inSeptember 2009.
His sister Leilawas the first to notice some-thingwaswrong, when she sawhim slumpedover in the back seat of the car. She thoughthe was playing the fool and poked him in theribs.
This evoked no response fromReza, and hewas rushed to hospital. Tests showed hisplatelet count was dangerously low.
This is one of the symptoms of AplasticAnaemia, a rare condition where the bodydoes not produce sufficient new blood cellsto replenish existing blood cells.
Reza’s condition has now become so severethat he is completely reliant onblood transfu-sions, which cost a fortune.
The teenager remains upbeat and showsstrength of character.
Reza says he really misses not being ableto enjoy a good game of cricket or soccerwithhis friends, and because of his illness, he hashad to stay away from parties and gather-
ings.He can’t risk compromising his immune
system by getting an infection. He also hastobe extremely careful of physical contact be-cause of his low platelet count.
For people who are diagnosed with Aplas-tic Anaemia, one of the answers is to havea bone marrow transplant – however, the do-nor must be a near match.
Both Reza’s siblings, as well as his parentsandmost of his close relatives have been test-ed, but none are a match for Reza.
The Sunflower Fund recruits potentialbone marrow stem cell donors to help pa-tients like Reza and many others in need ofa life-saving match.
A bonemarrowdrive is being held for Rezain the foyer of the Vineyard Hotel in New-lands on Bandana Day, Friday 12 Octoberfrom 07:00 to 10:00.
Anyone wanting to know about becominga bone marrow donor can contact the Sun-flower Fund on the toll free number0800 121 082 or visit www.sunflower-fund.org.za.

Taking up battle of addictionTTakingaking upup battlebattle ofof addictionaddictionJUANITA WILLIAMS
THE battle against substanceabuse has been bolstered byHopeHouseAddiction Counsel-ling Centre.
It was officially opened by May-or Patricia de Lille on Thursday.
The centre, on the corner ofMain and Military roads, has awaiting list of clients, mostly chil-dren, looking for guidance in theirbattle against drugs.
De Lille said: “We have beenfighting substance abuse for manyyears and I was very upset by theheadlines in the Cape Times aboutbabies affected by mothers addict-ed to tik. Without interventionpeople will go into a downwardspiral. This damages the familyand robs people of their full poten-tial. Small babies have no choicebut to absorb what their mothersare eating and at six weeks thebrain damage is permanent. It isunfair that young children’s fu-tures are jeopardised by the actionof the parents.”
About 1 000 babies are reportedto be born to mothers addicted totik.
De Lille called for all the NGOsand NPOs to work together asthere is a lack of coordination tomonitor the impact of the preven-tion work being done.
“No one can do it alone, we needa joint effort to heal and assist the
vulnerable people of the city. There is no easy way to recovery, and after rehabilitation there is noongoing support. We must up ourgame on the prevention side.”
The City launched the Don’tStart, Be Smart campaign twomonths ago and there’s a 24-hour/seven days a week helpline staffed
by professionals (0800 435 748).“But these interventions are not
enough to prevent the scourge ofdrugs. We need the full might ofthe law against merchants. It isnot normal for merchants to livein the same street as law-abidingcitizens, so that drugs can bebought two doors away; it is
wrong.”Provincial education minister
Donald Grant added that the costof prevention is “so much lessthan that of rehabilitation”.
“This is a war we simply haveto win. Law Enforcement say 93%of the drugs are imported. Wemust work on demand and get the
children to say ‘no’ to drugs andalcohol and make informed choic-es.
Hope House chairperson GeoffFox explains: “We reach out to thefallen and the weak and guide theconfused with various counsellingservices – whether it’s stress andanger management or trauma.”
“Addiction,” he says, “is my pri-mary focus.”
Judy Strickland, the founder ofHope House Counselling Services, says this is the centre’s ninth year.“Last year the centre completed3 159 sessions.”
The centre has 40 volunteercounsellors and seven volunteersat the Addictions Centre. Theteam includes a psychologist, three social workers and addic-tion specialist Shaun Shelly.
“There is a waiting list of 20 chil-dren to be counselled because wedon’t have enough volunteers. Werun youth-at-risk support groupsat schools and anger managementsessions. Recently the MakingPeace with the Past workshopshave helped childcare workers inKhayelitsha to deal with negativeissues.”
Shelly has designed a pro-gramme to help people overcomeaddiction through early recovery, learning relapse prevention skillsand recognising problems thatlead to addiction. Contact the cen-tre on (021) 701 9742 or visitwww.hopehouse.org.za.

of the shacks and, Soetwater adds, two ofthose residents are currently studying fortheir matric exams.“Two of the girls whose houses burnt down
are in matric and their books and schoolclothes were burned.”They attending Lavender Hill High, he
says.Residents had already started rebuilding
their homes on Thursday when People’s Postvisited the settlement. The fire started at Marinda van Rhyn’s
shack and, except for a TV and DVD player, destroyed all of her belongings.Van Rhyn says she has been sleeping out-
side since her home was destroyed. The 10
other family members who stayed with herare sleeping over with neighbours.“I’m sleeping here – outside, in the corner
– because I’m scared criminals will steal mystuff,” she says. She has also lost proof of her one form on
income.“My All Pay card was lost (in the fire). So
I can’t draw money because I don’t have my
All Pay card. I’m not working at the mo-ment,” says Van Rhyn. The fire was put out by the fire department
before spreading further after two fire en-gines, a water tanker and a rescue vehicle ar-rived at the scene.Rondevlei residents told People’s Post they
believe the fire was caused by an electricalfault.
However,TheoLane, spokesperson forFireandRescue, says this has yet to be confirmed.“The cause has still not been determined,”
says Lane, adding that incidents inwhich thecause of fire could not be determined are“usually handed over the police”.He continues: “We have to be absolutely
sure beforewe confirm (whether an electricalfault caused the fire) or not.”

Heaven’s Nest needs youHEAVEN’S NEST, a safehouse in Ottery, seeks child psychologists and occupationaltherapists to volunteer at the facility.According to coordinator Eleanor Bester,
the need for volunteers “is urgent and ongo-ing”.The facility provides a place of safety for
children under the age of eight who havebeen abused, abandoned, neglected or whohave been affected by HIV and Aids.
Many children are left with a feeling ofworthlessness.“These feelings and questions need to be
examined and dealt with before it causeseven greater damage to the child,” says Be-ster.Anyone interested in volunteering their
services can contact Eleanor Bester on 0(021) 703 9781 or 2 [email protected].

BEING asked to journal the Journey ofHope Breast Cancer Ride 2012 is an op-portunity of a lifetime. I accept that Godchose this experience to connect on a per-sonal level with breast cancer survivors.
Journey of Hope 2012 is a motorcycle rideundertaken by, among others, a group ofbreast cancer survivors. The ride kicked offon Saturday 6 October from Amanzingwe inBroederstroom, through the Eastern FreeState, KZN and then into Ushaka Marine-world in Durban on Saturday 13 Octoberwhere it will end.
The aim of the ride is to raise awarenessof breast cancer and funds, as well as spreada message of hope.
I dedicate this journey to my friendsElainePage andHelenStutz, and to themem-ory of Ahmina Miller and Mariam Abbass.
On this journey I met a man and women– each with their own story of how the dis-ease has impacted their lives, and those offamilies and friends.
Breast cancer survivor ZeldaErasmushasa path of faith, perseverance, support andlove. Helena Nell’s path has taught her lifeis preparation for eternity; to grab life withboth hands and make it count. Her story isone of hardship as she lost a son to cancer. She believes there’s no place for cancer inher life; her saying is that she lives at 1 De-feat Street.
Cancer, she says, needs to be fought on amental and spiritual level and she has nofear; she fears only God!
Kathy Malherbe hopes to help at least onewoman to saveher life. Eachday is ablessingfor Heleen Scholtz.
Lorraine Leburu lived a healthy, disci-plined life and never believed cancer was forher people.
Now her story is a testimony, a channeland a vessel to many. Nonki Rampoporo be-lieved cancerwouldneveraffect her as itwasan elderly people’s disease.
Now she believes God is bigger andHe candestroy the disease. She refuses to live innegativity and chooses to embrace life. JulieKemp, who loves biking, inspires womenthrough her public speaking. She will takeher story globally to educate people on theplight of cancer.
Timothy Mlenje never thought of breastcancer when he found a lump in his breast. His advice is that everyone is vulnerable, check your body, report anything strange.
Our 351km journey took us from Johan-nesburg toMidrand, thenVosloorus, Heidel-berg, Villiers, Frankfort and Reitz. Very badroads took us on to beautiful Bethlehem – aplace with great affinity because of thename.
It gave me new strength and inspirationto tackle the outreach together.

Truck stopIN THE early 1990s, Mitchell’s Plain was cor-doned off by minibus taxis. People weretrapped. Traffic came to a standstill. Roadsled to nowhere. Nobody could get in. Nobodycould get out. Fewwent towork.Allwere heldransom by the unified action of taxi drivers.Thosewere the dyingmoments of the strug-
gle days. People on the Cape Flats know itwell. The country burned; it was a looters’paradise; people got hurt. That was the daytaxis ruled the roads of the biggest Colouredtownship in the country.Fast-forward to the past two weeks. The ac-
tions of truck drivers nationwide now holdthe country captive. Goods are not beingtransported. If the strike by SA Transport and Allied
Workers Union (Satawu) continues, essentialservices will come to a grinding halt. Fewwould remain unaffected by this action. These concerns are already being feared.Availability of rawmaterials formanufactur-ing; goods for essential, life-saving services, like medical equipment; food; packaging. Insome small way – or another – each personwill feel the effects of the truck drivers’ strikeas they hold out for their pay hike demands. The strike is reported to cost the transport
industry R1bn in revenue each week.In the Cape, three people, a child among
them, were hurt and three trucks were setalight. Satawu denies involvement in vio-lence, but has reportedly called on rail andport workers for support of a secondarystrike. It will cripple the country. Somemay be re-
minded of the days when people were encour-aged to hoard baked beans – then in anticipa-tion of the “swart gevaar”, now because theresimply may be no stock to replenish storeshelves. We can build a nation only with like-minded people. Even so, everyone has theright to a fair salary.Let’s hope the strike comes to a quick con-
clusion.
Joining agang stilla choiceI WOULD like to commenton the letter byAbduragmanIsmael (“Youth are ‘marked’for failure”, People’s Post, 2October)These statements are the
most negative I have everheard. The youths have a choice
to become a gangster andthey chose it.As a parent I teach my
children the values of doingsomething with their lives. My 23-year-old son, who
has gangster friends, is asemi-professional soccerplayer and my 17-year-oldhas made his brother hisrole model.Yes, we live in Lavender
Hill and joining a gang is achoice youths make, andthen can’t get out of.So before joining a gang
think of how it will affectyour life.My 19-year-old daughter is
a soccer player and is doingreally well – a choice shemade. So don’t be negative, be-
cause you are there to upliftthese vulnerable young peo-ple.However, they still have
the choice to make.MARKLavender Hill
Tribute to a slain local heroABOUT three months ago I wrote a similarletter about another fallen hero, a communi-ty activist and fellow neighbourhood watchmember who had died violently. For the un-informed, I am referring to Suraya Naudefrom the Thunderbolt NeighbourhoodWatch in Lavender Hill. She was shot and fatally wounded on Fri-
day 29 June during a botched robbery at-temptwhile resting in bed at a friend’s homein Lavender Hill.On Saturday 22 September, John Septem-
ber (43), who was affiliated to the Cafda Vil-lage Neighbourhood Watch, was stabbedmultiple times by an acquaintance in frontof a notorious shebeen in Peter CharlesStreet. The father of three children was taken to
the Retreat Day Hospital where he later suc-cumbed to the knife wounds sustained.Like in Naude’s case the guilty party also
opted to hand himself over to the authoritiesat theSteenberg police station, wherehewasformally charged for the crime and arrested.Heappeared in court andwasgrantedbail,
pending his next court appearance.September’s funeral was on Saturday 29
September at the New Apostolic Church inCafda Village, and he was laid to rest at theKlip Road Cemetery in Grassy Park.He was well-known to the community, not
only as a neighbourhoodwatchmember, butmoreover for the fact he escorted people tothe minibus taxis in the early morning
hours.Hewas often calledupon to collect themedication of the elderly from the RetreatDayHospital. One of his neighbours, EustonBosman, reminisced about his fondness forSeptember, who always took the liberty tocollect and return the dirt bins of his neigh-bours on refuse collection days, sometimeseven without their knowledge. This crime again highlights the shebeen
issue that so often plagues our communities,as well as the often irresponsible issuing ofliquor licences to shebeens located in resi-dential areas by the Western Cape LiquorBoard. Steenberg police has reported thatthe shebeen in question is synonymous forunruly behaviour, scuffles and disturbancescaused by revellers coming from and goingto this notorious shebeen, and they havepromised to step up patrols at this shebeen.I want to convey our sincere condolences
to the family of John September on behalfof the Retreat Sector 2 NeighbourhoodWatch Forum.Rest assured on the premise he will be
sorely missed by his community whom hehas served so diligently, as well as by his fel-low neighbourhood watch members.May God grant you all the strength, resil-
ience and fortitude during this vexing timeof your bereavement. Always rememberthat God will never afflict you with a crosswhich will be too heavy for you to bear.MARK ROSSOUWRetreat Sector 2 Neighbourhood Watch Forum

NEWLY PROMOTED Milano Unitedkickedoff their first season in theNation-al First Division with a morale boostingdraw with Port Elizabeth side United FCat theWynbergMilitaryBase on Sunday.
The Grassy Park based team earned pro-motion to the second tier of South Africanprofessional football after winning theWest-ern Cape Vodacom League last season andfinishing second at the national promotionplayoffs in July.Head coach Theo Henpe was pleased with
thematch result andperformanceand is con-fident his troops can perform at a higher lev-el.“The first game of any season is obviously
very difficult. I thought the guys looked verycapable and I think we are definitely able ofdoing a little bit more,” says Henpe.“I don’t think we played to our best, but
I’m happy with the point. We can definitelyimprove our striking ability. I think we arelacking a bit up front, but our guys up frontcan do better and give a little bit more.”The game started at a frantic pace, with
players from both sides flying into tacklesand sprinting to every loose ball.Milano were the first to settle and they
took the lead just seven minutes into thegame, after a fast counter-attack down theright flank.Wing Lesvin Stoffels sent a teasing cross
into the box andMilano striker Keanan Tho-mas rose above goalkeeper Bongani Mpan-dle and a defender to head the ball againstthe base of the far post. Luckilyfor Milano, captain Keenin Lesch was on
hand to tap the ball into the open net.
The pace of the match did not slow downafter the goal and Milano continued tothreaten through Stoffels, Thomas and leftwing Devon Saal. The visitors matched their hosts in the
possession stakes, but couldn’t breach Mi-lano’s organised defence.United FC were a much improved team
when they returned from half-time and im-mediately started dominating possessionand territory.Milano failed to match the intensity and
work rate of the first half and struggled toget out of their own half. After several minutes the pressure finally
told and United found an equaliser.Tshwarelo Bereng rose above theMilano de-fence and nodded a well placed cross past aMilano goalkeeper Sherwyn Naicker in the20th minute.Even the goal could not wakeMilano from
their second half slumber and they spent therest of the match defending deeply and try-ing to play on the counter. Neither side wasable to break the deadlock.Henpe believes his chargers’ inability to
hold onto possession is to blame for the poorsecond-half performance.“I thinkmy team gave away a lot of posses-
sion without any pressure. I think the pos-sessionpartwas a little bit disappointing, be-cause we are capable of playing a lot betterthan that,” says Henpe.“I don’t think we lacked match fitness, we
have had a long pre-season. The first gamewas always going to be telling.”Milano will face former Absa Premiership
side Jomo Cosmos in their next game in twoweeks. Henpe believes his side will be ableto get one over on theirmore experienced op-ponents.
