The Figo, based on the previous-generation Fi-esta, is available with two engines: the 1.4-litreDuratec petrol (62kW/127Nm) and turbodieselDuratorq (51kW/160Nm). Both are fittedwith five-speed manual transmissions.There are two trim levels – Ambiente base and

Trend high-spec models – with both incorporatingthe new design elements.The Figo’s lower grille has been revised while

the upper section adds chrome detailing. Headand tail lamp clusters are new, too, while fog lamphousings are more aggressive. There are freshwheel designs.The Ambiente’s cabin adds a new pattern for

the seat fabric and a Dynamic Blue centre stackbezel.The Trend’s enhancements include new seat up-

holstery and the addition of Bluetooth to supple-

ment the Figo’s in-car entertainment system incor-porating radio, CD, MP3 and iPod functions.The system also allows for the connection of

cellphones via the car’s audio system and con-tacts and call history can bemanaged through thevehicle display.The Figo might be an entry-level model, but its

TOYOTA has joined the ranks of manufacturer stesting car safety systems that allow vehiclesto communicate with each other.

The cars at the intelligent transport system sitereceive information from sensors and transmittersinstalled on the streets tominimise the risk of acci-dents in situations such as missing a red trafficlight, cars advancing fromblind spots and pedestri-ans crossing the street.The system’s warning indicators include a beep-

ing sound in the car and an image of a person pop-ping up on a screen in front of the driver when the

presence of a pedestrian is triggered, a picture ofan arrow popping up to indicate an approaching carat an intersection and an electronic voice saying:“It’s a red light,” if the driver was about to ignorea red light.Toyota officials said the smart-car technology it

is developing will be tested on some Japaneseroads starting in 2014. Toyota claims the technolo-gy will be effective because half of car accidentshappen at intersections.Toyota also showed a new feature that helps the

driver brake harder to prevent bumping into the ve-

hicle in front. Toyota officials said drivers often failto push hard on their brakes in such situations be-cause they get into a panic.Toyota said the technology will be available

“soon,” without giving a date, and hinted it will beoffered for Lexus luxury models. Luxury models al-ready offer similar safety features such as auto-matic braking. Technology involving precise sen-sors remains expensive, sometimes costing asmuch as a cheaper Toyota car.The automaker also developed sonar sensors

that help drivers avoid crashing in parking lots. One

system even knows when the driver pushes on theaccelerator by mistake instead of the brakes, andwill stop automatically.Rear-end collisions make up 34% of car acci-

dents in Japan, comprising the biggest category,followed by head-on collisions at 27%.Cars that stop and go on their own, avoiding acci-

dents, are not pure science fiction, experts say.Alberto Broggi, professor at the University of Par-

ma and an expert on intelligent transportation sys-tems, said the idea of the accident-free cars is“very hot”, and probably within reach on someroads within several years.“I’m sure wewill arrive to such a technology even

HONDA has pioneered a new lightweight andcompact onemotor hybrid system for small vehicles, called the sports hybrid intelligent dualclutch drive system.

This new hybrid system will be the latest additionto the Earth Dreams Technology series of new generation powertrain technology that combines driving performance and high levels of fuel efficiency.

Together with the sport hybrid intelligent multimode drive for midsized vehicles and the sport hybrid super handling – all wheel drive, the newlydeveloped sport hybrid intelligent dual clutch drivewill join the lineup of three systems that can accommodate different vehicle sizes and characteristics, the automaker says.

Honda claims this new system will offer high levels of fuel efficiency and acceleration that is morepowerful than that of existing models to ensuredriver enjoyment and performance is not sacrificed.

It combines a newlydeveloped inline fourcylinder 1.5litre Atkinson cycle engine with a sevenspeed DCT2 system. The builtin highoutput motorand lithiumion battery improve efficiency by morethan 30% compared to a conventional onemotor

hybrid system, the automaker said.According to Honda, the combination of the one

motor hybrid system and the engine offers sportydriving during acceleration and highspeed cruisingby using the clutches to engage the engine. Electricvehicle driving is utilised during start up and lowto mediumspeed cruising by using the clutches todisengage the engine.

This system contributes to the improvement offuel efficiency by increasing energy regenerationusing the clutches to disengage the engine duringdeceleration.

The automaker claims this hybrid systemachieves the world’s highest efficiency by combining a newlydeveloped engine dedicated for hybridvehicles a new 2.0litre Atkinson cycle engine, anelectric CVT coupled with two builtin motors anda lockup clutch with a lithiumion battery.

It also includes a system that can switch modesto match driving styles and situations.

Outline of the systemThe system switches the operation among the

following three driving modes depending on drivingconditions and the battery charge level:

EV Drive: for driving by the electric motor using

electricity from the battery and regeneration duringdeceleration.

Engine Drive: for mediumto highspeed cruisingwith the engine and axle directly connected by alockup clutch and engine power is mechanicallytransferred to the wheels.

Hybrid Drive: for urban driving and powerful acceleration using the motor with electricity generated by the engine.

This hybrid system, which is also suitable as aplugin hybrid system, will be installed to the NorthAmerican version of the Accord, scheduled to beintroduced in January.

According to the manufacturer, the combination

of a V6 engine and this highoutput threemotor system achieves acceleration performance equivalentto that of a V8 with fuel efficiency better than thatof an inline fourcylinder engine.

A new V6 3.5litre directinjection engine is installed in the front of the vehicle and combined witha newlydeveloped sevenspeed DCT system witha builtin motor. This Honda technology uses twomotors installed in the rear to control torque distribution to the right and left rear wheels.

Motoring matters in briefTHE Ford Ranger has won the InternationalPick-Up Award 2013.

This makes it the third internationalaward the US automaker has won in 2012.

Judges ranked the new Ranger based onits performance, engine line-up, payload andtowing capability.

The bakkie was tested at the MillbrookProving Ground in Bedfordshire, England.

The Izuzu D-Max and Volkswagen Amarokwere placed second and third respectively.

Jarlath Sweeney, a judge on the panel,said: “The Ford Ranger is a great all-round-er, combining the perfect blend of on-roadcomfort and stability with off-road capabili-ty.”

Paul Randle, vehicle line director of FordEurope, said: “The Ranger is great for workand great for leisure, and customers will ap-preciate the difference as soon as they get be-hind the wheel.

“This prestigious award is testament tothe work of our global product teams andthere is plenty more to look forward to withthe launch of the all-new Transit and all-newTransit Connect in 2013.”

Ford has also scooped the 2012 Internation-al Engine of the Year for its 1.0 EcoBoost pet-rol engine as well as the International Van

of the Year 2013 (new Transit Custom).) A report from the European Commis-

sion released earlier in 2012 indicates thatdriving on under-inflated tyres can increasefuel consumption by as much as 4%, halvethe tyre’s life – and possibly kill you.

The commission adds that almost five mil-lion tons of CO2 are created by vehicles run-ning on under-inflated rubber.

Experts have also warned that soft tyrescan affect vehicle stability to the point ofcrashing.

Bridgestone, in a survey of 38 000 vehiclesacross nine European countries, found 71%of cars had under-inflated tyres.

European online tyre retailer Delticomprovided this example: “Riding a bicyclewith incorrectly inflated tyres requiresmuch more personal energy to move the bi-cycle forward. The same applies to your car,using excessive fuel and creating extra CO2emissions.”

Experts recommend regular tyre-pressureand tread-depth checks – at least once amonth – and frequent checks of their generalcondition, including the spare in the boot.

THE adage “looks can be deceiving” appliesperfectly to the Daihatsu Terios Off-Road.

While the compact, short-wheel-base off-roaderis no ugly step-sister in the aesthetic department,at first glance few would expect it to match thecapabilities of the larger and more costly 4x4s onthe market. Surprisingly, it does just that and inmany ways surpasses the competition.The Terios Off-Road is as comfortable on

smooth tar as it is on uneven ground, and it han-dled both surfaces well during the test drive.The potholes and ridges of Main Road Diep Riv-

er seemed non-existent and the bumpy, undulat-ing terrain of a field in RoscommonRoadwere alsono match.Standing at 10cm shy of 1,7m tall and just over

4m long, it is relatively small for a 4x4.But in this case, that smaller stature could be

viewed as a positive factor when taking into ac-count the ever-increasing cost of fuel and the ver-satility of the vehicle.The Off-Road was released in 2010 as a suped-

up and toughened-up version of the regular Teriosand has several improvements on the standardcar, including a free-flow exhaust, side-step, bull-bar and fog lamps.

It also offers increased power, with the kilowattoutput upped to 90 from the 77 of the standardmodel. Dynamite, in this case, comes in a smallpackage. Despite the increased power and weightadded to the car by the extras, the fuel economyhas not suffered too badly and the1.5l engine con-sumes around 8l of petrol per 100km, only 0,6lmore than the standard vehicle.The car has all the bells and whistles and

comes standard with a DVD player, GPS, aircon,power steering, roof racks, alarm, electric win-dows, electric mirrors, height-adjustable lenses inthe head lights, Bluetooth connectivity and sever-al other features.Another added benefit to the car is that it is

manufactured by Toyota and comes with the sameengine as an Avanza VVT.The Terios can climb a curb just as well as it

climbs an incline and still fit into the tighter park-ing spaces, making it useful for anyone whospends time in both the city and country.Although the R284 995 price tag could scare

off potential buyers, the features mean that itcould be value for money to anyone with an activelifestyle.

results improve, with new vehicle sales upby 10% compared to 2011, continuing costcontrol and a decline in debt.Carel Martin, spokesman for TransUn-

ion, said: “But all is not rosy as dealer con-fidence levels are decreasing when com-pared to those seen over the past 18months.”“There is good reason for this, as con-

sumer debt continues to grow and reportsindicate that households are experiencingfurther strain.”Other factors which could pressure the

industry included rising fuel prices, tollfees for Gauteng drivers, and stabilisingvehicle sales volumes. Continued supportprogrammes frommanufacturers, coupledwith low interest rates, could potentially

boost consumer credit demand. Low priceincreases for 2012, which contributed togrowth, were unlikely to be sustained in2013 as the Rand weakens and inputcosts increase.Martin predicted continuing pressure for

used car dealers, who were selling usedvehicles below the recommended retailprice in an attempt to counter price dis-counts and incentives offered by the newvehicle market.Gross margins in the used vehicle mar-

ket appeared to have stabilised after theaverage percentage gap between tradeand retail values reached its lowest levelin the past four years.Martin said: “Given the current market

FORD’S Figo gets a rocking new look in line with the automak er’s“kinetic design” language and a number of extra interior features,including the addition of Bluetooth to cer tain models, all without aprice hike.

The Figo, based on the previous-generation Fiesta, is available withtwo engines: the 1.4-litre Duratec petrol (62kW/127Nm) and turbodieselDuratorq (51kW/160Nm). Both are fitted with five-speed manual trans-missions.There are two trim levels – Ambiente base and Trend high-spec models

– with both incorporating the new design elements.The Figo’s lower grille has been revised while the upper section adds

chrome detailing. Head and tail lamp clusters are new, too, while foglamp housings are more aggressive. There are fresh wheel designs.The Ambiente’s cabin adds a new pattern for the seat fabric and a

Dynamic Blue centre stack bezel.The Trend’s enhancements include new seat upholstery and the addi-

tion of Bluetooth to supplement the Figo’s in-car entertainment systemincorporating radio, CD, MP3 and iPod functions.The system also allows for the connection of cellphones via the car’s

audio system and contacts and call history can be managed throughthe vehicle display.The Figo might be an entry-level model, but its safety features are

top notch, incorporating dual front airbags, anti-locking brakes and elec-tronic brakeforce distribution.Gavin Golightly, Ford SA marketing manager, said: “The Figo’s contem-

porary design, solid performance credentials and desirable safety fea-tures are refreshing for a vehicle in its class.“It is well-positioned as a value-for-money prospect and with the addi-

tion of some new enhancements its overall appeal is further cemented.”The Figo comes with a four-year or 120 000kmwarranty and a five-year

THE adage “looks can be deceiving” applies perfectly to theDaihatsu Terios Off-Road.

While the compact, short-wheel-base off-roader is no ugly step-sis-ter in the aesthetic department, at first glance few would expect itto match the capabilities of the larger and more costly 4x4s on themarket. Surprisingly, it does just that and in many ways surpassesthe competition.The Terios Off-Road is as comfortable on smooth tar as it is on

uneven ground, and it handled both surfaceswell during the test drive.The potholes and ridges ofMain RoadDiep River seemed non-exist-

ent and the bumpy, undulating terrain of a field in Roscommon Roadwere also no match.Standing at 10cm shy of 1,7m tall and just over 4m long, it is rela-

tively small for a 4x4.But in this case, that smaller stature could be viewed as a positive

factor when taking into account the ever-increasing cost of fuel andthe versatility of the vehicle.The Off-Road was released in 2010 as a suped-up and toughened-

up version of the regular Terios and has several improvements onthe standard car, including a free-flow exhaust, side-step, bull-bar andfog lamps.It also offers increased power, with the kilowatt output upped to

90 from the 77 of the standard model. Dynamite, in this case, comesin a small package.Despite the increased power and weight added to the car by the

extras, the fuel economy has not suffered too badly and the 1.5l en-gine consumes around 8l of petrol per 100km, only 0,6l more thanthe standard vehicle.The car has all the bells and whistles and comes standard with

a DVD player, GPS, aircon, power steering, roof racks, alarm, electricwindows, electric mirrors, height-adjustable lenses in the head lights,Bluetooth connectivity and several other features.Another added benefit to the car is that it is manufactured by Toyota

and comes with the same engine as an Avanza VVT.The Terios can climb a curb just as well as it climbs an incline and

still fit into the tighter parking spaces, making it useful for anyonewho spends time in both the city and country.Although the R284 995 price tag could scare off potential buyers,

the features mean that it could be value for money to anyone withan active lifestyle.
