More than 100 new parking bays will becreated in Retreat Road to alleviatethe congestion, which has been a
bone of contention for many residents foryears.Kevin Southgate, secretary of the Retreat
Business Forum, says they’ve been askingfor parking bays along the business corridorfor a number of years.“We’ve also asked the City of Cape Town
to have a look at the existing bays as therearemanybusbays, but there are fewerbuseson the route,” says Southgate.He saysmore loading zones are needed for
the businesses awaiting deliveries.“People are always complaining about
parking their cars in the side roads whichleaves their vehicles at risk. People are alsoparking on pavements,” he says.
Southgate believes the City needs to en-gage with residents before implementingchanges. “A few years ago trading bayswereerected for informal traders; those bayswere never used.”Caressa Human, who works at a business
onRetreatRoad, describes the roadas abusytransport node with heavy traffic each day.“The current parking bays are very close
to the businesses on the road and sometimesit feels like a car is going to drive into ouroffice,” says Human. “We really need morebays on this road.”A resident, who asked to remain un-
named,welcomes the extra parking bays.Hesays the road is “too busy and can’t be wid-ened” because there aremany houses on thebuilding line close to the street.Ward councillor JanBurger says the park-
ing bays will be constructed at the shoppingcentre in Eighth Avenue to alleviate thepressure from the road.
“Shoprite will be the anchor tenant at thenew shopping centre. I hope more business-es will invest in the Retreat CBD as it willadd to theupgrade. There aremanybusinessowners who can help make the area better,”says Burger.Langevlei Ratepayers’ and Civic Associa-
tion secretary Mark Rossouw says bus-stopbays will also be turned into parking baysfor cars to alleviate congestion.“The civic associations in the community
want to focus on more parallel parking baysin the road,” Rossouw says.“It is a serious problem because people
just stop their cars in the road and parkwherever theywant. They take advantage ofbecause the road does not have many trafficofficers patrolling it – something which isdesperately needed.”The City of Cape Town points out the
project of the new parking bays is not theirs,but that of the chainstore.
But a Shoprite spokesperson says they’rejust a tenant and not responsible for the de-velopment.Rafick Dawood, who owns the building in
which the chainstore will be a tenant, saysthe 107 parking bays will be for patrons ofthe stores in the building.“We initially wanted the entrance to the
building to be in Retreat Road, but counciladvised us to relocate it to Eighth Avenueand tohavea traffic light or circle in the roadas a traffic calming measure; we chose to gowith a circle,” Dawood explains.“The parking area is free and is not for
people to just park and leave their cars. Theidea behind this shopping centre is to bringa shop to the community which they’ve nothad before.”Dawood also says the chainstore promises
to create more job opportunities for the im-mediate community, as it’s been designed asa high-specification shop.

The next time you take that first drinkat a party, think again – that drinkmayjust land you in hot water.
And with the festive season, often re-ferred to as the “silly season”, fast ap-proaching, law enforcement authorities areout in full force in an attempt to keep CapeTownand our province’s roads safe and freeof drunk drivers.The legal limit in South Africa for breath
alcohol content is 0.24mg per 1 000ml or ablood alcohol limit of 0.05g per 100ml.In literal terms this equals two thirds of
a beer or spirit cooler with 5% alcohol con-tent; 75ml of red or white wine with an alco-hol content of 12% to 14% per hour; and upto one 25ml tot of alcohol per hour for whis-key or brandy drinkers.Two drinks in one hour will more than
likely put you over the legal limit.And the Automobile Association of South
Africa (AA) continues to lobby for the bloodalcohol concentration limit to be brought inline with world standards.“The crisis on South Africa’s roads de-
mands a tougher approach. The AA has forsome time proposed that the 0.05% limit bereduced to 0.02%,” says AA spokespersonGraeme Scala.“This allows some leeway for medica-
tions that contain alcohol, but still empha-sises that one alcoholic drink puts you overthe limit”Should you be caught driving under the
influence of alcohol you could face up to sixyears in prison and/or be slapped a fine ofup to R120 000.A driver, who was arrested for driving
under the influence three years ago andasked to remain unnamed, tells People’s
Post of his experience.“My wife and I were onour way home from a par-ty, when we drove into aroadblock,” he says.“After speaking to me,
the officer asked me tostep out of the car. Aftersome questioning, he in-structed me to phonesomeone to collect my caras I would need to accom-pany them to a testingcentre for blood tests. Ispent that night in theholding cells at a local po-lice station.”The following day he
made his first of manycourt appearances.“Over the course of the
next two years I had a court appearanceeach month; with each appearance the law-yer I appointed charged up to R1 500,” he re-calls.“The case was postponed for several rea-
sons, including a delay in the results of theblood tests, as well as a change in the stateprosecutor.”Afternearly 24months, the casewas final-
ly closed and he was sentenced to 250 hoursof community service within two years. “Iam still doing the time for my unnecessaryactions; it is something I will never subjectmyself or my family to again,” he says.“This was not only an expensive eye-
opener for me, but my friends and familytoo.”And, Scala says, evidentiarybreathalyser
printouts are admissible as evidence incourt.“If jail termswerehandeddown for drink-
ing and driving, the public would become
more sensitised to the issue,” he says.“The AA has also called for the fight
against drinking and driving to be steppedup on a national level, with greater enforce-ment and wider use of evidentiary breath-testing machines.“Drivers who ensure they are sober will
have nothing to fear, but those who drinkwill be removed from the roads before theycan cause harm.”Richard Coleman, spokesperson for the
City of Cape Town Traffic Services, saysevery driver has a responsibility when theydrink alcohol and plan to drive thereafter.“If you have used any substance (which)

Owners of home-run businesses aroundthe city are up in arms at a companygoing door-to-door to co-opt them to re-
tain the firm’s financial services.They claim “inspectors” from DTB Trad-
ing are approaching them to register theirbusinesses with the company, saying if theydo not comply, their businesses would beshutdown.A home industry owner also alleges she
was left with the impression DTB operatesunder the auspices of the City of Cape Townas well as the police as the business ownerhas a ranking commonly used by police.A tuckshop owner for 19 years, Sheila Hol-
land alleges a DTB inspector told her LawEnforcementwould close her business if shedid not sign up with the company.“I became worried as I have a license to
run my shop. It was the first time I heardof DTB and having to register with them,”Holland says.“The inspector said the total cost of regis-
tration is R3200 – R500 deposit to receive atemporary permit and the R2700 balanceover four months, before you receive a per-mit.”She further adds DTB inspectors have vis-
ited other home businesses in Retreat. “I’veheard they’ve also been in Grassy Park,Mitchell’s Plain and Bonteheuwel,” Hollandsays.“I’m really afraid I will be forced to close
my shop. I know a tuckshop owner in Park-wood Estate who closed her shop becauseshe couldn’t afford DTB’s fees.”
Foreigners targetedHolland questions whether the registra-
tion of home industries is being enforced bytheCity. “Wedon’t know if it’s legal. They’vebeen targeting foreign tuckshopowners, too.If we don’t register with them, they’ve toldus they’ll blacklist our businesses and closeit.”Tuckshop owner Susan Fick is also con-
cerned as shewon’t be able to afford theDTBfees. Similarly hair salon ownerFerozaDan-iels says she nearly closed her business asshe could not afford the registration fee.
False impressionLocal ward councillor Melanie Arendse
says her constituents alerted her to DTBTrading’s presence in the community.“I went to one of DTB’s sessions at the
Grassy Park Library and told people theydid not have to register with the company,”she says.“They only need a City license – at R273
– to run their businesses. I also told themDTB’s Gregg Fick is exploiting them by cre-ating a false impression of his role in thecommunity.“Some people demanded their money
back. Gregg refers to himself as senior su-perintendent, which gives people a false im-pression of what he does – and that he worksfor a governmental structure.”She says people who operate home busi-
nesses and live in City-owned homes shouldregister their businesses with the Depart-ment of Housing. New home business own-ers also need to apply to the City.“Business owners who sell food need a
health license, too,” she says.But Gregg Fick counters all claims saying
DTB is a private companywhich assists peo-ple to register their businesses.“We advise people to get licenses and help
foreign nationals register their businesses,
as we’ve found the process takes longer forthem. We charge them between R500 andR800. I’ve even accused the City of misusingfines towards foreign national businessowners,” says Fick, who is named as DTBTrading’s provincial head on a social mediawebsite for professionals.
Want to be transparentFick says business owners come to DTB
to register their businesses. The company’sdocuments state exactly what their missionis. “If people don’t want our services, theydon’t have to register with us. We want tobe transparent. People pay aR500 deposit, af-ter which they can decide if they want moreof our services. Our fees are R3200, which in-clude association fees, bookkeeping, media-tion and accountant fees for three years.”Fick claims officials from the Department
of Trade and Industry and the SouthAfricanRevenue Services have attended their ses-sions.
Apply to City of Cape TownA freelance “inspector” for DTB says she
believes in the company’s work, as it hashelped many foreign business owners regis-ter their businesses with the City.She met Fick four months ago when he
came on to her property to register Bangla-deshis living with her.“I collect the R500 deposits which I give to

DTB and their registration process.”Mayoral Committee member for Econom-
ic, Environmental and Spatial PlanningGarreth Bloor confirms DTB is not contract-ed by the City, but says he cannot confirmwhether other spheres of government may
have contracted DTB.“Business owners and residents are ad-
vised to check for City identification whenpeople come to theirhomes.AnyCity officialwho performs this kind of function carriestheir (City) ID card,” Bloor says.“It is not necessary for residents to employ
Mr Fick to regularise their business interms of the Zoning Scheme. They shouldvisit their local planning office to apply forthe land use application.”He says the City won’t just close down
businesses but will “first assist” applicants.

The combination of fit minds and bodieshas seen pupils at Lavender Hill HighSchool reach for the stars.
This came after the school received gymequipment from international entrepreneurand Virgin Active founder Sir Richard Bran-son.
Last week Branson visited the school tosee the gym which his company sponsoreda year ago.
The initiative is linked to one of his initia-tives, Future Crew, which aims to promotepositive change by educating teachers andcoaches, engaging youths to become more ac-tive and employable, and to create future em-ployment where the need is greatest.
Former Springbok and now rugby com-mentator and also Future Crew brand am-bassador Ashwin Willemse spoke at theevent. He shared how he grew up in difficultcircumstances which led to him consideringsuicide.
“Look inside you and not at your limita-tions. The gym is here to not only increaseyour triceps and biceps, but to also expandyour imagination,”Willemse said.
Pupils entertained Branson with song anddance showcasing the their talent.
Branson spoke of his experience sufferingfrom dyslexia, which created an immensedislike for school and caused him to drop out.
He subsequently started his own maga-zine, called Student.
“I loved creating things which you can selland this sparked (the idea of) the magazine,an (international) record label, airline com-
pany and gym. Think of entrepreneurialthings, have big dreams, set little goals,achieve them and then (go on to) bigger tar-gets and achieve them,” Branson advised.
The school’s softball team has been doingwell – thanks to the gym. Every Friday theteam uses the equipment to increase their fit-ness.
Team member Joelene Pokwas (18) saysshe’s never heard of Branson before, but at-tributes her team’s success to the gym equip-ment.
Dancer Chante Marinus (17) says it’s diffi-cult growing up in the community, but onequickly gets used to the situation.
Principal Faseeg Manie conveyed his grat-itude to Branson.
He has also warned pupils and staff that hecontinue referring to the day when the en-trepreneur visited the school to not only seethe gym, but also encourage the school fami-ly.
“The impact of Sir Richard Branson’s visitto our school has been enormous. The prov-ince has 1 700 schools, but he chose to visitLavender Hill High School. I know he has ahigh regard for the school because he knowswhat we’ve achieved despite the odds weface,” Manie says.
“Pupils need to dream big and not becomeanother high school drop-out. This is a schoolon an upward curve. We did not blame ourapartheid past as an obstacle to achieve our88% matric pass rate, implementing a feed-ing scheme, gym, library and computerlabs.”
Future Crew has also assisted BishopLavis and Hawston high schools with gymequipment.

Residents of Fourth Avenue in Retreatare complaining that a vacant plot hasbecome an eyesore.
The plot, on the corner of Fourth Avenueand Retreat Road, previously housed a dere-lict business premises which was demol-ished. It has since become a dumpingground, as well as a toilet for vagrants, resi-dents claim.
Raymian Adams (31) says the plot hasbeen problematic for as long as he has livedin the road.
“I’ve seen clothing lying there and seen
people using it as a toilet,” he fumes.“It is becoming a problem. People are
burning wires and breaking up things forcopper. Before the building demolished theywere doing those things inside; since thedemolition they’re doing it outside. I havebeen living here for five years and the build-ing has been gone for about three years.”
Fatima Samsodien (68) says vagrants andscrap collectors are to blame.
“People come here with trolleys and theyjust dump things there. Whatever they getthey just throw it there; clothing, shoes andscrap,” she says.
“They should clean the property.We don’tknow what (the owner) is going to do with
the property, but it has to be cleaned. It isin full sight, in the main road.”
Theproperty is ownedby theLogday fami-ly, who also own several other buildings andproperties in Retreat Road.People’s Post spoke to two men (brothers)
of the family. Neither would give their firstnames and both refused to comment on thematter.
The first person contacted for commentconfirmed a registered letter from the Cityof Cape Town had been received.
Councillor Lungiswa James, MayoralCommittee member for Health, says the let-ter “clearly instructs the owner to clear theproperty of all overgrown vegetation and to
suitably dispose of all waste”.“Filth and other waste material such as
old clothes, broken shoes and householdrefuse had accumulated on the property,”James says.
“It also appeared to be overgrown withlong grass, weeds, bushes and other alienvegetation. These conditionsmay favour themultiplication and prevalence of verminsuch as flies and rodents.”
James says the City may clear the proper-ty and then send the bill to the Logday fami-ly.
However, residents are concerned that theplotwon’t remain clean if the property is notfenced and remains vacant.

Nearly 50 pupils have been stabbed onschool grounds in the province in thefirst three quarters of the school year.
Stabbing incidents have dropped by a re-ported 10 incidents from54 during the sameperiod in 2012.Five of the stabbings reported happened
at Mitchell’s Plain schools.But education activists say this number
may be skewed as many incidents go unre-ported.Colleen Horswell, chairperson of a local
education forum, says the number of stab-bings are still far too high.She suggests search-and-seizure opera-
tions be conducted more regularly to pre-vent school violence.Meanwhile, exams have commenced at
schools across the province.BronaghCasey, spokesperson for provin-
cial educationminister Donald Grant, sayswhile no exams have been disrupted as aresult of school violence, the education au-thorities are monitoring the situationclosely.Structures have been put into place to
help stressed and anxious pupils in trou-bled areas.“Our school psychologists and social
workers in every district and circuit are al-so on standby to provide counselling sup-port as required,” she says.Derrick Patience, principal of Sibelius
High School in Steenberg, says violence atschools escalates every year.“Regular searches are conducted at our
school and we’ve even employed full-timepsychologists and counsellors to assist uswith aggressive pupils,” Patience says.“Substance abuse and dysfunctional
homes have led to parents abdicating theirresponsibilities. Now teachers don’t onlyteach, but also have to deal with these so-cial ills.”Patience says Grade 8 and 9 pupils have
been caught carrying weapons becausethey don’t understand the dangers.“You can’t watch them 24/7 and we have
to be vigilant all the time,” he says.Mark Engelbrecht, principal of Heath-
field High, says his school has not experi-enced any serious violence.“Teenagers will always try to resolve is-
sues with fighting. We have consequencesin placewhichmay even lead to suspension
if pupils step out of line,” he says.“We also do random checks for danger-
ous weapons and have only confiscated ob-jects on one or two occasions. Pupils whocome from communities with a lot of gang-sters see weapons as being a norm and areimpressed by these objects.”The school also has community safety
workers patrolling the school each day.Engelbrecht echoes Patience’s feeling
that teachers are expected have two rolesthese days.“Schools are now taking on responsibili-
ties of parents. We have to pick up the piec-es of children who are broken,” Engelbre-cht says.“Our second task has become teaching,
while the first is to create discipline in theclassroom.”Meanwhile JP Smith, Mayoral Commit-
tee member for Safety and Security, saysadditional law enforcement officers havebeen deployed to schools in gang-riddenhotspots.Adedicated teamof 109 additional lawen-
forcement officers were deployed toManenberg inAugust to curbgangviolencein the area.The dedicated team will continue their
patrols at high-risk schools until the end ofthe school year in December, Smith says.Manenberg High School principal
Thurston Brown says this is a great deter-rent for school violence. “The gang vio-lenceprevalent in theareahas thepotentialto spill over into our school grounds. Butwe have a strategy in place to prevent thisfrom happening,” says Brown.Search operations are conducted at the
school nearly every second day.“This sends out a clear message to pupils
that we will not tolerate anyone bringingweapons to school. If we find anyone in pos-session of a weapon, the pupil’s parents areimmediately called in,” Brown adds.The school has also implemented an ex-
tra-curricular programme, providing chil-dren with a safe space to learn and play af-ter school.“The programme has attracted a lot of
children to participate in sports afterschool. Dance and music programmes arealso offered. He battles to wheel himself through thesand and stones to get to the self-made,carpet-covered “ramp” leading to the
rickety front door of his wendy house.Brandon Roland forges on, bravely veer-
ing through obstacles to make it home.Determined to remain self-reliant, he ac-
cepts there are times he has no other option.He is one of thousands of disabled people
living in dire and unsuitable conditions, pa-tiently waiting to reach the top of the hous-ing waiting list.And despite wheelchair-bound applicants
being given priority status, activists say toolittle is beingdone to grant the disabled theirright to suitable housing.Rolandhasbeenon the list for 11 years and
although he refuses to “sit back and wait fora handout”, the meagre wage he makes asan assistant in a fish tackle shop will neverbe enough to secure him a bond.“As a father I want to provide formy fami-
ly,” he says, tickling his eight-month-olddaughter.“But being in awheelchair is a serious dis-
advantage. Council claims to prioritise theneeds of the disabled, but those are just emp-ty words. I would like nothing more than tobe self-sufficient, but this wheelchair isstanding inmyway of earning a fixed salaryand buying my own house.”His tiny, neat home has been burgled
countless times by opportunistic thieveswho know he would be unable to put up afight.“I have nowhere else to go. I have come
a long way from living in a squatter camptowhere I am today. But I wantmore formy-self and my family. I don’t want to die here,still waiting for my reference number to becalled.”
The waiting gameA total of 3 313 disabled people fromacross
the city are currently on thehousingwaitinglist, confirms Mayoral Committee memberfor Human Settlements Tandeka Gqada.These applicants need to be registered as
wheelchair-bound to be prioritised.“Through registration theywill be consid-
ered part of the special needs category andmay qualify on a priority basis for housingprojects as per the City’s allocations policy,”she says.“We are committed to being a caring city
and therefore do all we can to build a metrowhere those who need help receive it to im-prove their living environments.”Candidates have to be classified as disa-
bled on the housing needs database. A doc-tor’s certificate or other official documenta-tion is needed for registration.Gqada says council makes provision for
the disabled during the construction ofcouncil accommodation through a specialneeds category, which includes the building
of disabled-friendly units.
Carrying onBut while council claims to be mindful of
the needs of the disabled, Abduraghman Sa-lie (53) rubbishes this.He waited 20 years to move into his coun-
cil home – a maisonette which requires himto find his way up a steep staircase to getfrom the downstairs bathroom to his bed-room.“I either have to get up very early so that
my sons can carry me before they leave forworkor slither like a snakedown the stairs,”he explains.He waited two decades for the call from
council that a home has been allocated tohim.“When I discovered it was a two-storey
house, I still took it. I had waited so manyyears and I didn’t want this opportunity topass me by. My family had been living indire conditions for too long; I put my needsaside so that they could have four walls tocall home.”He has since applied for a wheelchair-
friendly house but knows there may still bea long wait ahead.“I should never have been in this situation
in the first place. It’s hard enough being ina wheelchair, but its even more difficultwhen you are further disempowered by de-pending on others for mobility.”
Mum’s the wordTessa Willemse has made it her lifelong
goal to teach her son independence.Buther efforts are somewhat invainas the
teenager relies on family members to carryhim through the sandy stretch that leadsfrom their tiny wendy house to their frontgate before he can use his wheelchair.She has to pick up her almost adult son to
allow him to relieve himself in a bucket, asthey do not have access to a proper toilet andcannot afford to spend hundreds of rands onadult diapers.In the decade she has been on the waiting
list, she has made every effort to make hersmall home as wheelchair-friendly as possi-ble.But she still prays and dreams of moving
her son into a house where he can learn tobe self-sufficient.“I don’t know what more I can do,” she
says, close to tears. “I have been to housingoffices, the civic centre in Cape Town andcountlessmeetings. But nomatterwhat I do,all the doors are slammed in my face.”Until her dream of a wheelchair-friendly
house is realised, she will continue to makeevery effort to make life as easy as possiblefor the 17-year-old.“Some might think it would be easier to
put him in a special care home, but I couldnever do that. He is my son.”
Short end of the stickDespite government’s claims of building
an inclusive society, wheelchair-bound peo-ple continue to be overlooked, argues Disa-bled People of SouthAfrica provincial secre-tary Anthony George.“Handing over the keys to a mainstream
council home doesn’t cut it,” he insists. “Ihave seen people battling in the space theyare supposed to feel most comfortable, de-
pending on their families or neighbours tohelp themget inandout of theirhomes.Theyare forced to forfeit their independence forahouse that doesn’t evenallow themtomovearound freely.”A more intimate understanding of the
challenges facingwheelchair-boundcitizensis needed to ensure the disabled are not giv-en the short end of the stick, George says.“No-one stands up for us. Handing over a
monthly grant isn’t seeing to the needs ofour people – there needs to be input and con-sultation. How can a perfectly able-bodiedofficial make the call on what would be ac-cessible and comfortable for someone whocannot move their legs?”
Housing for allCape Town Association for the Physically
Disabled director Bridget van der Merwesayswhileuniversal accessibility in the con-struction of all housingwould be ideal, thereis still a longway to go before this is realised.“But change is creeping in,” she says.
“General building standards are transform-ing towards allowing the disabledmore easein doing things like going to the toilet orswitching on the lights. While not perfect,these measures are seeing us move in theright direction.”But housing activist Sulyman Stellen-
boomsays theprocess should be “drasticallyspeeded up” and government should be thecatalyst for change.“We all have equal rights so we should all
have equal opportunities, especially to basicneeds such as housing. All avenues towardsempowering and giving independence to thedisabled must be prioritised.”

Sassa collars social grant fraudstersELAINE SWANEPOEL
The South African Social Security Agen-cy (Sassa) has since the beginning ofthis year concluded about 840 investi-
gations into corruption in social grants.Hundreds of thousands of rands worth of
stolen money has also been recovered.More than 240 Sassa staff have also been
prosecuted for corruption and fraud.These successes were announced during
Sassa’s first anti-corruption conference ear-lier this week.
Sassa CEO Virginia Peterson says sincethe introduction of the biometric system inMarch they received 1 800 cases of corrup-tion and fraud.The cases already settled had a combined
monetary value of R4.5m.“The biometric grant payment system
sees the beneficiary’s fingerprints and voicerecordings entered into a computer systemto prevent allowances being paid to thewrong person,” Peterson explained.More than nine million people have been
registered in this way.
Social development minister BathabileDlamini said corruption and fraud is rife inthe department and at Sassa.“We are very concerned that most of the
corruption and fraud which has come tolight was committed by people appointed toserve the community. Sassa and departmentofficialswill, therefore, also be registered onthe biometric system in the next twomonths,” Dlamini said.This will allow employees’ activities to be
tracked.She also said most fraudsters arrested so
far were women.The department is investigating a range of
possibilities tomakemonthly grant payoutseasier and thuswipe out the chance of fraud.“One of these is the possibility of personal-
ly handing over pensioners’ allowances,”she said.However, Dlamini says unscrupulous

Commuters are questioning the im-plementation of Metrorail’s newtimetable, which comes into effectlater this month.The rail agency plans to amend
the weekday-roster of its currentSouthern and Central service linesto a frequency-based service.This will result in changes to the

‘Whites only’advert irks
The South African Human Rights Com-mission (SAHRC) is investigating aCape Town job advertisement only
seeking whites as applicants.This after recruitment agency Quest post-
ed a job advert stating only white men needapply.Theadvert sparkeda flurryof outrageon social media sites, with Quest being ac-cused of racism.Quest denied accusations ofracism saying its clients decide the job re-quirements.The SAHRC said it was also investigating
another advert, “Algemene Werker slegsblankes” (“General worker whites only”).The SAHRC says they condemn such ad-
vertising.V Here is what People’s Post readers have to say.
BRIAN KOCK says the advert is taking us back tothe old South Africa. “I do not understand whythey should say ‘only white’ or even black for thatmatter. I can’t think of anything a white man cando that I cannot do.”
RADE MAKHUVHA says people are still stuck inapartheid and does not think the advert was rac-ist. “I have seen lots of job advertisements sayingthey are only looking for a black man. I ignorethem and look for something I’m qualified for.”
VELISWA QALO says it would not have been thesame reaction if the advertisement was for ablack man. “I am over apartheid, but many willfind it offensive when they see an advertisementlike that. They are still living in the past, notknowing that they are doing the same thing.”
ZAIN GALLIE believes racism hasn’t stopped. “Wedon't have equal rights. What counts for one per-son should count for another. When I see an ad-vertisement like that I feel criticised and ashamed– as if I have no place in this world.
FABIAN HENDRICKS says he is offended by theadvertisement. He believes jobs should be allo-cated on education. “It should depend on whatqualifications one has and not your skin colour.It’s racist and I don't like it.”
NICKY DAMON says he was offended by the ad-vert and wants equality to reign triumph. “We alldeserve a fair chance. They should focus on quali-fication, not race. We are over apartheid. To methe advert was racist. I’m happy they removedit.”
MONIQUE SWART says she deals with similar ad-vertisements almost every day. “For me the ad-vert was racist. I work in BEE and these are thekinds of things I deal with daily. Even if the advertwas about blacks, people were going to raisequestions.”

New venue forSummer FestivalTheVoice of the Cape’s annual Summer
Festival has found a new home at Vy-gieskraal Stadium in Athlone.
This year’s festival – from Thursday 5 toSunday 8December – is themedCelebrating91.3fm to mark the radio station’s long-awaited move to a new daily, independentfrequency.People’s Post is the print media partner
of this event.The festival attracts between 30 000 to
50 000 visitors every year and is the biggestcommunity festival on the social calendar.
After six years at the Cape Market in Ep-ping, themove toVygieskraal has beenwel-comed.
The newvenue is not only central in loca-tion, but is situated in the heart of whereVOC’s listenership resides.
Vygieskraal Stadium is on the publictransport route, making it accessible to alarge group of festivalgoers who use publictransport.
Achmat Jacobs, chairperson of theBoardof Management of the Muslim Broadcast-ing Corporation (MBC), says this year’s fes-tival is one VOC is bringing to its listeners.
“We’vemade sure that stallholders, serv-ice providers and festivalgoers will enjoyall that the festival has to offer,” Jacobssays.
Festivalgoers can expect a weekend offun-filled activities such as musical per-formances, sports tournaments, fun ridesand a tea garden.
VOC listeners will be able to meet theirfavourite presenters, as the station willbroadcast from the event the entire week-
end.A variety of delectable food will be on of-
fer and flea market lovers can find every-thing they need at the souk stalls – fromclothing to jewellery, perfume, music,books and toys.
There is also a corporate exhibition,where shoppers can find innovative newproducts. The set-up of the festival will becompletely different this year, allowingstallholders to receive equal exposure.
This year’s festivalwill have ahuge focuson sports and enthusiasts can look forwardto cricket, rugby and soccer tournaments,which highlights up-and-coming sportingtalent.
Parking arrangements, traffic flow andother logistics will be made easier by theCity of Cape Town.
The festival organisers have aimed tokeep the event as affordable as possible, soentry fees will remain unchanged. TicketscostR20 for adults. Pensioners andchildrenunder the age of 12 payR10. All-day parkingcosts R10.
The festival was initiated 17 years agoand remains one of themost important fun-draising projects for the community radiostation.
This year, VOC celebrates 18 years ofbroadcasting. VOC is situated in Salt Riverand broadcasts to the Cape TownMetro ar-ea on 91.3fm.
The station’s two other frequencies are95.8fm in the Boland and 90.9fm in the TwoOceans area. VOC also broadcasts interna-tionally via audio-streaming onwww.vocfm.co.za.

Strandfontein Football Club have can-celled plans to enter the professionalranks through purchasing a Safa Sec-
ond Division franchise.The club announced plans to buy a spot in
the third tier of South African football, fromnewly promoted club Knysna Bafana, at its35th anniversary celebrations in late Octo-ber. However, Strandfontein will no longercompete in the Second Division after negoti-ations between the club’s financial backersand Knysna Bafana were cancelled.Sharief Christians, junior chairmanat the
amateur club, confirms theywill not be play-
ing in the Second Division this year.“Wehave decided thatwe are going to con-
centrate on our youth,” he says.Christians, who would have taken up the
chief operations officer role at the profes-sional club, refused to give any further de-tailswhenquizzed aboutwhether thenegoti-ations broke down.His reasons for the withdrawal contradict
statements made in an earlier interviewwith People’s Post on Tuesday 29 October.During the first interview,Christians said
developing young players was the key rea-son for the buying the franchise.He said: “The core of the Second Division
team will be Strandfontein players. A lot ofour youngsters play in our Mitchell’s Plain
Local Football Association (MPLFA) SuperLeague team.”He also stated: “We think we have the
quality of players we need to survive. Theseboys are never given chances. Now we aregiving them a chance to show they can playat this level.”Strandfontein previously played in the
SecondDivision, but a lack of fundingmeantthe franchise was sold to Vasco da Gamaabout six years ago.The club had not yet secured a sponsor at
the time of Christians’ first interview withPeople’s Post, but he said the financial back-ing would come from a clubmember and hisbusiness partner, who were set to bankrollthe franchise purchase.
The franchise would have brought profes-sional football back to Mitchell’s Plain forthe first time since Santos FC left the MPL-FA earlier this year to join Cape DistrictLFA.Although Mitchell’s Plain United FC play
in theSecondDivision, the club is just a feed-er team for Santos and are based at the San-tos Academy in Lansdowne.Mitchell’s Plain is widely considered to by
a hotbed of football talent, but the lack of aprofessional club in the area could be to thedetriment of football development.While themost promisingplayerswill still
be cherry-picked from amateur sides whenspotted, the level of competition and coach-ing could suffer.

Baseball is booming in Grassy Parkthanks to the hard work of a local club.TheDevonshireBaseball Club, based
at Fairmount High School, runs a develop-ment programme that has seen childrenfrom several schools in the area take up thesport.Ivan Gabriel, public relations officer for
Devonshire, says the club has already “seensignificant results”.“We have seen kids nobody even consid-
eredwould be selected forWestern Provincebaseball teams, flourish,” he says.“Earlier this year one boy came to base-
ball practise on a Friday for the very firsttime, not knowing a thing (about the sport).He was such a natural that we sent him fortrials the very next day and he (was selectedfor) the Western Province under-10 team.”The development programme sees Devon-
shire coach baseball at Fairmount HighSchool and Montague’s Gift Primary.A league has also been started with Mon-
tague’s Gift playing matches against DeDuine, Grassy Park EC and Sid G Rule pri-mary schools every Wednesday. A struc-tured league has not yet been formed for thehigh schools, but Fairmount and GrassdaleHigh play matches every Tuesday andThursday.The programme is run in partnership
with the City of Cape Town and the provin-cial Department of Cultural Affairs andSport, with the City maintaining the fieldand province paying stipends to some ofDevonshire’s coaches who work at theschools.Gabriel says the programme has also led
tomany children joining Devonshire to playin club competitions.“The aim of the project is to stimulate the
sport. A lot of kids already play for clubs, but
the kids who don’t play for clubs join Deven-oshire,” he says.“It’s not like the club is taking kids from
other clubs; it’s children who are new to thesport.”Devonshire is also set to step up its efforts
to expand the programme with the help ofthe Constantia Rotary Club.TheRotaryClubwill help provide funding
and support to feed the children, purchaseequipment and improve the facilities.Devonshire are also set to receive a ship-
ment of second-hand baseball equipmentfrom the US courtesy of the Major LeagueBaseball. “The equipment is important, aswe don’t have resources,” says Gabriel.“Ourmembers are fromtheParkwoodand
Grassy Park areas, and the equipment isvery expensive. Every game we play, eachteam needs new ball and it costs R90. So wespend over R500 on balls every Saturday.Without that equipment we would have hadto turn kids away.”The club will also host a golf day at Kuils
