A peace treaty signed on Sunday 22 July is believed to have been struck between rival gangs in Lavender Hill (“End in sight to gang war?”, People’s Post, Tuesday 24 July). The proposed deal was made between the Junky Funky Kids, Mongrels and Corner Boys. Community leader Clive Jacobs says he “hopes and prays” the situation would re- main the same and that residents could “live in peace” rather than having to fear for their lives. Since the agreement was reached, Jacobs explains, crime has “gone down drastically”. “The area is really quiet and there is no crime or gang interference in the community, which is absolutely amazing and something different to what we have been experiencing for the past two years,” says a proud Jacobs. Colonel Noel Josephs, station commander of the Steenberg Police Station, confirms that since Friday 20 July, there have been no inci- dents of gang violence reported in the Laven- der Hill community. Josephs expressed his desire to sustain the current situation in the former gang-infested area. “The gangs have made peace for various reasons,” he says, “but I would love to see the people involved with the peacemaking proc- ess to discover further solutions and to sus- tain the gang peace in the area.” Although the area is relatively calm, the po- lice say they will continue to maintain a strat- egy. That is, they say, until provincial police au- thorities decide to make changes to the strate- gy. Josephs adds: “The high number of officers being deployed in Lavender Hill will remain and if provincial (police authorities) feel more officers are needed, then it must be so.” Llewellyn Jordaan, social worker at New World Foundation, was involved in the peace agreement which was reached between the gangs. He believes a “solid start” was made. Jordaan says much still needs to be done, adding: “It is now time for everybody and all organisations to jump on board to try and pre- vent this problem from resurfacing.” He believes the peace agreement estab- lished a “solid platform” for police and organ- isations to start putting in place proper struc- tures to tackle gang violence. Of the sceptics – whom he calls “prophets of doom” – Jordaan says: “Everybody is enti- tled to their own opinions and there are peo- ple who believe this agreement will not last, but the question is, will we stand back and just allow this to happen?” Kevin Southgate, chairperson of the Steen- berg Community Police Forum, hopes the agreement does not form part of a “gang strat- egy” to throw police off. He explains that the peace agreement could easily be a strategy to get police to back off. Southgate says: “There have been numer- ous peace agreements in the past and the gang violence just picked up again like normal. “So we really hope this agreement will stick this time around and gang violence could be wiped out once and for all.” Southgate says he is extremely “happy” – especially when witnessing the “calm” in the area. He adds: “I am really happy most of the Muslims in Lavender Hill can have a peaceful Ramadan and they do not have to fear gang violence spiralling out of control.” Josephs, meanwhile, urges the community to remain vigilant as he believes many of the “gangsters” will take part in other criminal activities. “The community must be on the alert,” says Josephs, “because we fear that criminals will just be getting involved in robberies or housebreak-ins seeing that the shooting has stopped.” Public Public Public protest protest protest

Going for goldGoing for goldDear reader,

SeeingTeamSouthAfricaduring the opening ceremo-ny of the London OlympicGames filled me with im-mense pride and anticipa-tion. Cameron van derBurgh winning our firstgold medal and smashingthe world record of theworld 100m breaststrokewas the cherry on the cake.

Like most South Afri-cans, and especiallyCapetonians, I natu-rally back a winner.

People’s behaviour and responses tosport reveals a lot about themselves. Weremain glued to our TV screens whenour side is winning, but heaven forbidwhen the opposite applies. We leave thestadium early, change the TV channelwhen our side is losing or take teabreaks to avoid witnessing our team’sagonising defeat. We yell, or throw theremote on the floor. Some extremistsdrown their sorrows with booze (not I)and some let rip with the most colourfulCape Flats vernacular (not I).

Van der Burgh’s our goldenman rightnow and we’re high on his victory, justtwo days into the Olympics. His winmadeup for the bitter disappointment atour hockey, volleyball, rowing, soccerand other defeats so far.

But it’s still early days for our Olym-pic hopefuls.

Not so for Stormers, for whom the fi-nal whistle has blown. Sadly, their die-

hard supporters gave up ontheir team and stoppedcheering with the same fer-vour displayed at the startof the game when Stormersbegan trailing in the SuperRugby semi-final at New-lands on Saturday.

This was when theStormers needed their sup-porters most.

We can learn a lot fromfighting ’til the bitter end –the Manchester United-

Ajax game is a case in point. The Red Devils did not accept defeat,

despite being 1-0 behind.Theygave theirall until the dying minute of extra time, when they scored the equalising goal.

On the topic of backing winners, dur-ing my recent vacation a female friendand I went to Club Mykonos for a girls’getaway. We spent thousands of rands toescape our stressors, men and childrenand ended up talking about our stres-sors, men and children.

At one point, we made a pact to ceasediscussing our men, but that was short-lived and we later returned to assessingwhy we need men.

We concluded that men are useful forkilling spiders, changing light bulbs, driving, carrying the groceries from theboot to the house, looking after the kids, ensuring our safety and braaing.

As we passed other holidaymakers’units and smelt their tantalising braaiv-leis, being skilfully executed by men, Iconfessed that I’d never braaied and

wouldn’t know how. We undertook totake all our children and at least onemother and one husband with on ournext holiday. In that way, we’d havechildcare, driving and the braai all tak-en care of, leaving us to spend qualitygirl time together.

We did enjoy some male company atthe resort; in the formof “Tom”, the resi-dent black-and-white tomcat whom wefed top quality tuna and sardines. In re-turn, Tom rewarded us with loyalty andlove, moving into our unit and sleepingover on a cane chair. A day later, Tom’sbrother, an equally handsome black-and-white kitty, also arrived for meals. And we secured the services of a male“chauffeur”, one of the resort’s golf cartdrivers, by tipping him generously inadvance.

By the time we left for home, we hadlearnt a lot about ourselves. I can be an-noying, losing myself completely in abook and whipping out my laptop evenwhile on holiday, to respond to urgentemails and work on a project. My friendfound her escape in soapies.

We contented ourselves with eatingout often and ended up disillusionedwith most of the food.

Despite all that, we had a great vaca-tion.

Anarchy at service delivery protestLUZUKO ZINI

CHAOS erupted in Phumlani Villagewhen residents protested over servicedelivery and housing.

Police respondedby firing teargasandrubberbullets todisperse thecrowddur-ing the protests on Thursday. They ar-rested 21 people.A four-year-old child is believed to

have fainted. A tear gas canister, whichlanded on the roof of a house, left a holein the roof.Theprotest startedbetweenthecorner

of 5th and Strandfontein road and endedat 14th Avenue.A four-year-old child collapsed when

she inhaled tear gas thrown inside theyard of the community hall used as acreche.Vera April, a community worker who

looks after the children at the hall, saysthe children are innocent victims.“The children don’t knowwhat is hap-

pening but they were also victims of in-haling tear gas. A four-year-old fainted

after police threw tear gas inside theyard of the hall,” she says. The tear-gas attack has left a hole in

the asbestos roof of Amos Makatesi’shome.“I was asleep when the tear gas was

thrown. It was my wife who alerted mewhen she came into thehouse screaming‘The house is burning!’. I then jumpedout of bed and by that time the tear gashad spread throughout the house,” hesays.“I covered my face with a blanket and

tried to open the windows. While I wasopening trying to open thewindows I re-alised there was a hole in the roof.”The service delivery protest was to be-

gin at 06:00 and end at 10:00, but accord-ing to resident PoppyMyeki, the proteststarted just after 05:00.“The people started protesting after

05:00 and the police came after 30 min-utes telling us ‘The protest is illegal’.It is then that the police fired rubber

bullets and later after 7:00 they threwtear gas after they saw that we were notstopping with our protest,” she says.

There were no reported injuries, be-sides smoke inhalation.Ward 67 councillor Shaun August be-

lieves damaging City infrastructure, specifically traffic lights and roads, isnot the solution to poor service delivery.“Damaging robots by burning them

and throwing rocks on to the road is notthe way forward. I feel their pain whenit comes to service delivery but damag-ing the existing infrastructure is not theanswer. The damage will cost the Cityabout R800 000,” he says.August promised residents that with-

in twoweeks hewill bring officials fromCity housing and electricity depart-ments to address their concerns.“I have told residents that within a

space of two weeks I will come with offi-cials from both housing and electric de-partment so thatwe can have ameeting.I have also told the residents that theirproblems will not be solved overnight,”he says.EricBalebanye, Secretaryof SouthAf-

rican National Civic Organisation (San-co) in Phumlani Village is outraged by

the arrests.“The police arrested people who are

part of our struggle. We are not happywith that, wewant them released so thatthey can be part of this protest.“I’m not sure what time the traffic

lights were burned down but it wasshortly after the march began,” he says.Station Commander of Grassy Police

Station, Colonel Adrian Saulse, says the21 people arrested were charged withpublic violence.According to Balebanye the 21 who

were arrested made an appearance incourt on Thursday.“They appeared in the Wynberg mag-

istrates court and were released on freebail with a warning. They are expectedto appear in court on the 29th of Au-gust,” he says.

GENDER EQUALITY POLICY

Should SA athletes be rewarded equally?SOUTH African Olympic athletes maybe going for gold, but the shine has beentaken off the government incentive todisabled athletes to bring home themedals.

The SA Sports Confederation and Olym-pic Committee (Sascoc) announced the in-centives for athletes competing at the Ol-ympic Games. The lucrative financial in-centive for athletes will see able-bodiedathletes receive more than their disabled

counterparts.Olympic athletes winning gold medals

will receive R400 000, silver medallists willget R200 000 and bronze medallists will bagR80 000.Paralympic athletes winning gold med-

Dumped baby now wrapped in loveTARREN-LEE HABELGAARN

A BABY boy discarded in a Wyn-berg park is basking in the love andattentionof staff at aplaceof safety.

The baby’s age could not be deter-mined at the time of going to press, buthe is believed to be between one andtwo months.Left to themercy of the elements, the

infantwaswrapped inabrownblanketunder a bush in Maynardville park. Itis not certain when he was left there.A security officer employed byKuffs

Security found the baby at 17:55 on Fri-day. The blanket was wet.

Captain Andre Venter, the Wynbergcluster spokesperson, says: “The secu-rity officer was on his way to open thegates surrounding the park when hefound the boy.”Venter says the guard rushed to the

police station opposite the park. Policeofficers accompanied the guard towhere the baby was still lying.Wynberg police officers took the ba-

by to the Victoria Childcare Unit, saysVenter. In spite of having been left out in the

cold, the police say the baby seems tobe in good health. At the time of going to press, the po-

lice could not saywhere the baby is be-

ing kept. Jackie Hope, of NazarethHouse, in Cape Town, advises motherswho are feeling overwhelmed at theprospect of parenting to turn to socialworkers for help.Hope says: “A social worker will in-

tervene and place the children in ahome until a more permanent livingarrangement can be made – whetherthat means placing the child with oth-er family members or at a fosterhome.”Nazareth House takes in abandoned

children for periods of 48 hours to 90days, Hope says.A case of child abandonment has

been opened.

Learning to get fitLUZUKO ZINI

A DISUSED woodwork classroom hasbeen turned into a state-of-the-art gym atLavender Hill High School.

The new gym will be made available to all1000 pupils.

Principal Faseeg Manie says the gym willhave a healthy spin-off for all at the school.

“This will not only have a positive impacton the school, but also to the pupils who canuse the facilities to better their physical con-dition,” he says.

The gym was sponsored by national healthand fitness group, Virgin Active.

The firm’s strategic communications head

Les Aupiais says the school gym is one ofmany such initiatives of the company.

“We want to tackle increasing levels ofobesity, highlighting sport as an integral partof a healthy upbringing,” she says.

“This is the first gym we have offered toa school and we are looking to expand intoother areas like Grassy Park, Delft, Kuils Riv-er and Khayelitsha.”

Explaining the importance of investing inthe youth, Aupiais adds: “This is not only fo-cused on physical activity, but includes a pro-gramme to mentor pupils who could have em-ployment opportunities in the gym.

“If we are able to keep the youth out of thestreets and give them opportunities to be-come better people, then we can be happy.”

Manie describes the gym as a great escapefor the pupils.

“The gym will also be open after school andthat will give the pupils a chance to be busywith something positive.

“We, as teachers, always tell our childrennot to do drugs and keep busy with positivethings and now we are able to provide themwith one of the positive things.”

Manie says the gym will especially benefitthe sporting codes offered at the school.

“We offer sports like soccer, rugby and net-ball and the gym will help the pupils who par-ticipate in the sports to stay in good physicalcondition,” he says.

He says the school needs a professionalgym instructor who will assist the pupils.

Currently the teachers who do the Life Ori-entation classes are doubling as gym instruc-tors.

Anyone who can assist can contact theschool on 0 021 701 9000.

Centre rallies after scandalCentreCentre ralliesrallies afterafter scandalscandalTAURIQ HASSEN

THE AL-NOOR Orphanage Centre inWoodstock has suffered a major setbackduring the holiest month on the Muslimcalendar, after allegationsof a scambeingrun from the home surfaced.

Throughout last week, emails alleging thatdirectors were pocketing donations spreadlike wildfire. These emails also suggest that many of the

children at the home were not orphans, butwere rather being used as bait to reel in do-nors.People’s Post has seen the email, which in-

dicated that director Amina Fonguh Madien– a Cameroon national – had been arrestedand charged under the Organised Crime Act.Madien denies all allegations of being ar-

rested and pocketing donations, and claimsthat a former employee – an IT technician –is targeting the orphanage.Madien says the former employee is

banned from the premises.“Every year something happens at Al-Noor

and our name gets damaged, but we are get-ting sick of it because now we are faced withdoing damage control,” says Madien. She claims that just before Ramadan last

year, the IT technician was arrested on thepremises for performing illegal activitiesthere.Madien says: “We fired the technician and

then banned him from ever returning, butthen he started threatening members at thehome and spreading bad rumours about Al-Noor, even reporting me to the ImmigrationDepartment on numerous occasions.”Sergeant Hilton Malila, spokesperson for

the Woodstock police, is not aware of the ar-rest and was not informed about any arrests

being made at the centre.“Tomyunderstanding, shewas arrested on

mere allegations, butwas never chargedwithany crime,” says Malila. However, Madien scrapped talks of her ev-

er being arrested and claims that shewas tak-en in for questioning by the immigration de-partment at Home Affairs in June.“This is where the confusion kicked in be-

cause people thought I was being arrested, but my criminal record is clean. Worst of all,all of this is tarnishing the name of thehome,” says Madien.

The news came across as “shocking” toMalila, as the station regularly hosts severaloutreach programmes at the home.He confirms that during last year, the

Hawks Unit conducted a search operation af-ter receiving information about illegal activi-ties happening at the home. The suspect was arrested and was believed

to be threatening the home, says Malila, whoadds: “We are aware of this man and his deal-ings, so this could be a matter of sour grapesand taking revenge on the home.”Al-Noor made the headlines in 2010 when

a donor from Australia wished to fund a tripto Cape Town Stadium for the children at thecentre to see aWorldCupmatch (“Orphanageadmits cup photos are a lie”, People’s Post, 10August 2010).It turns out that the children were never

taken to the World Cup match and the homeadmitted to falsifying photos of the childrenat the event.Donors contacted People’s Post last week,

expressing their concerns around the claimsof Al-Noor being part of a scam.Igshaan Toeffy, a shop owner in Wood-

stock, regularly donates bread and sweets tothe home and is shocked by the allegations.“I did not know what to think, because I

have been giving to this home for quite sometime now. For me to hear that everything isbeing pocketed makes me feel as if I have notbeen doing good for anybody but the direc-tors,” says a disappointed Toeffy. However, he vowed to get clarity on the sit-

uation, promising that meetings will be heldwith the relevant parties.“I want to knowwhat is going on,” he says. The Muslim Judicial Council released a

statement explaining that the circumstancesaround the centre had been “assessed andscrutinised”.“We are satisfied that the organisation is

functioning optimally in the Woodstock areaand rendering Islamic services to the commu-nity,” it reads. The MJC is now encouraging the public to

continue supporting the centre and contrib-uting “generously to this worthy cause”.

Fake Grand-Pa powder recallFake Grand-Pa powder recallA MAJOR pharmaceutical firm is re-calling all 38-pack Grand-Pa headachepowders.

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has issued analert to consumers to be on the lookout forcounterfeit headache powders.

The batch numbers are 309339 and314020. A statement was issued “in cooper-ation with the SA Medicines ControlCouncil”.

The joint GSK Consumer Healthcareand Medicines Control Council statementsays “consumer safety is their number

one priority”. “Consumers are alertedthat counterfeit headache powders, soldas Grand-Pa Powders 38-count, bearingbatch numbers 309339 and 314020, may becirculating in the South African market,”it reads.

The pharmaceutical firm has instituteda “voluntary” recall of all genuine andcounterfeit products with these batchnumbers to “remove the product from themarket and protect consumers”.

GSK is also advising consumers and re-tailers to check their stock.

“The affected product should not be

used as counterfeit medicines were notsubject to the rigorous safety and qualitychecks by GSK as is the case for genuineGrand-Pa Powders,” the statement reads.

The fake Grand-Pa Powders will be ana-lysed at the GSK laboratories in the Unit-ed Kingdom “to determine the contents ofthe counterfeit products”.

Consumers can identify the fake prod-ucts through the batch numbers as well asthe wording on the side panel of the box, which contains spelling errors.

Consumers are also warned to stop us-ing the fake pain powders.

Fest to surf into Guinness recordsMUIZENBERG will be awash withsurfers who will attempt to breakthe Guinness World Record for themost surfers riding the same wave.

The event, hosted during the BOSEarthwave Beach Festival, will takeplace at Surfers Corner on Saturday 29and Sunday 30 September.

The fifth annual edition of this popu-lar festival will again harness the in-terest surrounding the GuinnessWorld Records to promote sustainablelifestyle choices by featuring competi-tive and fun events in the ocean and onthe beach.

A host of exhibitions, demonstra-

tions and talks on environmental is-sues will take place over the two days.

Paul Botha, fromorganisersKahunaPromotions, says the festival hasgrown into one of the biggest surfing-related events since the first record at-tempt in 2007.

“Since 2006, when 73 surfers were re-corded on the same wave, the festivalhas become one of the surfing world’sbiggest mass participation events,”says Botha.

“This year we’re expecting evenmore people to participate in andwatch events such as longboard andgrom surfing, SUP and surfski races, touch rugby and volleyball tourna-

ments, along with plenty of activitiesfor children.”

There will also be give-aways, stick-er-showers, beach cleanups, rafflesand fundraising. The fiesta ends witha party featuring a live band and a hi-larious auction.

Rated byNational Geographic as oneof the top 20 beach towns in the worldMuizenberg is the ideal venue for thefestival.

It is considered the birthplace ofsurfing in South Africa and features apristine 20km fine white beach, gentlerollers and warm water.

Kits for Evertonians young gunsLIAM MOSES

THE passion two boys have for thebeautiful game has spurred on theirbusinessman father to kit out an un-der-9 Grassy Park soccer team.

Evertonians FC accepted two specially-made kits on Saturday. The team will nowalso be able to call on the expertise of a per-formance psychologist. These are thanks to Grassy Park resi-

dent Rafiq Saville, who found out aboutclubwhenhis sons joinedEvertonians ear-lier this year. The club, which plays at the Rooikrans

sports field, are made up of players from, among others, Grassy Park, LavenderHill,Cafda and Retreat. The team exists thanks to funding initia-

tives and time put in by their coach anda handful of caring patrons.Says Saville: “The idea of the equipment

is something I consider very important be-cause clubs like Evertonians don’t havethe financial means to run a sustainableoperation.”He adds the club is “essentially funded

from the back pockets of a few really con-cerned individuals”.According to Saville “that’s really sad”

as a financial setback may cause them to“withdraw their support and could poten-

tially force the club out of the league andout of existence”.Galvanised into action, Saville enlisted

the help of SeaPoint performance coach Brenda van

Straaten. She will be assisting the players to deal

with struggles both on and off the pitch, says Van Straaten. She adds while the coach works on their

fitness and coaching, Van Straaten is“working with (them) to overcome obsta-cles andbecomereally strongmentally andemotionally”.“How we all live in one part of our lives

affects every part of our lives and obvious-ly these are youngsters who (face) prettytough conditions.”She will be working with them to “learn

to visualise and set goals and how to over-come obstacles. (I want to) give them lifeskills tools to overcome what is happeningin their environment so they can retainconfidence in their own ability and remainconnected to themselves.”She started working with the group two

weeks ago.Saville, who also supplied some players

with soccer boots, has pledged to regularlydonate a share of profits from his personalfinance business.Heplains to facilitatemore sponsorships

for tracksuits and a container, which candouble as a training and store room.

KITTED OUT: Evertonians FC under9s show their delight at their new kits before their gameat Rooikrans on Saturday. Parent and sponsor Rafiq Saville, far right, helped bring Brendavan Straaten, far left, on board as performance psychologist.
