TEMPERS flared this past weekas the community and various Is-lamic organisations took on theMuslim Judicial Council (MJC)over the Orion Cold Storage com-pany scandal.
The Cape Town-based frozenfoods distributor has allegedly beenimporting pork products, kangarooand water buffalo meat, and relabe-ling the products as beef and as ha-laal.
It is also alleged that Orion ColdStorage imported pork hearts fromBelgium and Ireland, relabelingand selling them as beef or sheepveal hearts, marked as halaal.
3rd Degree showed undercoverfootage which apparently showedemployees using heatguns to re-move original labels and replacingthem with halaal stickers. In theprogramme, the MJC did not com-ment, but held a press conferenceon Tuesday.

Various members of the Muslimcommunity feel that the MJC wasnot transparent enough with theirdealings in the alleged halaal rela-beling process.
The MJC granted halaal clear-ance to consignments from OrionCold Storage, but has since cut allits ties with the company.
However, outraged Muslimshave begun questioning the MJC’shalaal certifying process, withmany calling for the organisation tobe disbanded.
Cassiem Parker, spokespersonfor People Against Gangsterismand Drugs (Pagad), wants the MJCto be “run transparently” and isasking people to not buy anything
that has been certified by the MJC.“Pagad initially became involved
after being approached by peoplewho asked if we could do some-thing.
“We immediately called on con-sumer organisations, who also saidthey were prepared to act.
“The MJC has not explained itshalaal meat certification process tothe public,” says Parker.
“We want people to rather eatmeat which has been certified byother Muslim bodies until theseprocesses have been madepublic.”
He says the MJC has failed in itsresponsibility to deliver halaalproducts to the community.
“The MJC must take full respon-sibility if it is their fault. Theyshould also investigate members ofthe MJC and hold those people re-sponsible too.”
He adds that if the MJC wants tobe the service provider, it shouldset the record straight.
“They should say this is the issueand this is the procedure which hasfailed and this is the person who isresponsible, but up until today thishas not been done.”
Abduragman Khan, spokesper-son for theMuslimsAgainst Illegiti-mate Leaders, says the MJC has ahistory of not being transparent orbeing held accountable and it istime that this happens now.
“It is a big violation that Muslimswere sold pork. Muslims have lostfaith in the MJC. They have been atthe forefront of dividing people andthey should be held accountable.
“The certification is a money-making scheme.”
Previously, Nabeweya Malick,spokesperson for the Muslim Judi-cial Council, told People’s Post thatthe registration of Orion Cold Stor-age had been revoked.
“After it was ruled that OrionCold Storage had been found guilty,the MJC had no dealing with Orion.The MJC condemns the crime as itshows disrespect to Muslim people.
“We would like to assure the com-munity that for 45 years all theproper procedures have been fol-lowed to ensure that halaal meatsare given to the people.”
She added that the chickenswhich the MJC certified at OrionCold Storage were halaal.
“A vet, inspector and members ofthe Department of Trade and Indus-try were present when the chickensarrived and everything was in or-der.
“The MJC had no jurisdictionover the Orion Cold Storage Facili-
ty and had no idea what was hap-pening and condemns this action.”
Khan, however, says this is notgood enough and that the MJC hasdone irreparable damage.
“When people lose faith, how dothey get it back?”
The paper tried to gain furthercomment from the MJC before go-ing to print, but was unable to do so.

Miss Mardi Gras crownedTHE annual Mardi Gras brought Wynberg’sWilliam Herbert sportsground alive over theweekend.
For the second year, People’s Post is theproud print media partner of the Mardi Graswhich is hosted by the Cape District FootballAssociation (CDFA).
For three days, the Mardi Gras treated peo-ple to live entertainment, fun rides, a fun run/walk and food and drinks from a variety ofstalls. Superstars Jody Williams and KarenKortjé wowed on Saturday, with the highlighton Friday being the popular Miss Mardi Grasduring which 12 finalists competed to take thecoveted title of Mardi Gras Queen.
The crowd went wild after Marche Martinwas crowned Miss Mardi Gras, with ImogenSmit chosen as first princess and Sarah-leighBarber second princess.
The Mardi Gras continues on Friday 3 Feb-ruary, from 16:00 to 01:00 and Saturday 4 Feb-ruary, from noon to midnight.
On Friday, it will be the battle of the boy andgirl bands with R10 000 prize money. On Satur-day, Oscar Petersen, Monox, Ladyliscious,The Rockets and Salome will entertain.
Drifting continues on both days and Comeand Play is on Saturday, from noon to 17:00.

A SEAWINDS man might havetragically lost his life in a carcrash, but will not be forgottenafter a lavender garden wasplanted in remembrance of thispassionate community man.
Baden Philander, along with fiveothers, tragically died in a carcrash on their way home in the ear-ly hours of Sunday 22 January.
People’s Post (17 January) ran thearticle, “Six killed in horror crash”.It highlighted the accident whichtook place in Southfield. The boyslost control of the Honda they weredriving in, hit and killed a carguard, before ending up in a vacantshop.
On Wednesday 25 January, the
Seawinds and Lavender Hill com-munity flocked to Military Road,where Lavender plants and the col-our lavender were painted onto thewalls surrounding the garden.
Philander was a student at theUCT Graduate School of Businessand requested to work on a projectwith Charles Maisel, one of SouthAfrica’s most successful social en-trepreneurs and Philander’s part-time lecturer. Maisel asked Philan-der if there was any Lavender inLavender Hill to which he replied:“I do not know”.
This started the project, “Laven-der in Lavender Hill”.
Henry Asia, grandfather ofBaden, was extremely proud of hisgrandson and said: “Baden was al-ways looking to do things for thecommunity he lived in.”
Asia spoke to People’s Post at thetree-planting event. His daughter,Jennifer Philander (Baden’s mom),could be heard crying in the back-ground. While painting the wall, hespoke about Baden and Neil Asia,his son, who was also involved inthe crash.
“It’s very hard for our family, los-ing two loved ones in the same acci-dent. It is very hard to describe, butit happens and we have to move onand smile,” says Asia.
Henry Meyer, one of Baden’sformer lecturers, described Badenas always worrying about the com-munity.
“He was involved in manyprojects and initiatives, a man whoalways cared about his communityand he will surely be missed,” saysMeyer.

High tea bringsjoy to elderlyTHE Retreat Sector 2 Neighbour-hood Watch Forum brought joyand delight to the elderly at theDouglas Murray Memorial Homefor the aged last month with a“high tea”.
The elderly are often forgotten bymembers of our society and this iscurrently the only facility of this na-ture in the immediate Retreat vicini-ty.
It has 91 occupants and they are allreliant on their social pensions as asole means of income.
Media Liason for Sector 2 Mark Ros-souw says: “The pension is paid overto the home as a monthly rental.
“The operating cost of the facilitypresently outweighs the income by a largemargin, even though the Department ofSocial Development provides funding.
“But the funding is still not sufficient tosustain the facility.
“Our project was especially meaningful,as it coincided with the festive season,which is after all the season for giving andsharing.”
Rossouw continued by saying the eventwas a resounding success.
“The plight of these elderly citizens isnot an easy one and they are appreciative
of any assistance that will ease their diffi-culties.”
The Neighbourhood Watch thanked allthe sponsors of the event.
“Your sponsorship was fitting and ap-propriate and we would certainly not havebeen able to achieve the success we had,without your support.

PROTESTERS vowed that this weekendwill be “round two” of their attempt to“occupy” Rondebosch Common – but thistime, they plan to follow the legal route.
Cosatu will host a protest at the commonon Saturday from 10:00 to 12:00 in support ofthe demands made by Communities for So-cialChange,whoattempted to “takeover” thespace last Friday for a weekend-long summitfocusing on housing, unemployment, and theintegration of poorer communities into theleafy suburbs.
No authorisation had been given by theCity for the summit or for amarch,whichwassupposed to take place from Athlone Stadiumto thisnationalmonument (“Prepare for com-mon takeover”, People’s Post, 24 January).
The organisation’s demands include the de-velopment of housing on Rondebosch Com-mon and golf courses to help with the provin-cial housing backlog. They also want thescrapping of council house tenants’ rent ar-rears.
People living in poorer areas – rangingfrom Manenberg to Stellenbosch – werethreatened with arrest at their meetingpoints in Athlone and Manenberg, and it isbelieved that close to 1 000 protesters dis-persed owing to a heavy police presence.
While about 60 determined activists madeit to the Common, 40 were arrested under theillegal gatherings act, including convenorMario Wanza.
But Cosatu organiser Mike Louw says anapplication for permission to assemble at thecommon has been made to avoid a repeat ofthe debacle which unfolded at the nationalmonument on Friday.
The City of Cape Town confirms that therequest has been received, and that a meetingbetween the organiser and the council willtake place tomorrow.
The trade union slammed local govern-ment’s reaction to the march, asking how“a hundred people protesting peacefullycould threaten the civil order of a city withmillions of inhabitants”.
Organisations within Rondebosch havealso been invited to attend the protest.
Wanza, who is also affiliated to Cosatu,says the participating organisations will“not back down” in its crusade towards“equality within this apartheid-style resist-ance”.
He appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’sCourt yesterday (Monday) and was releasedon R500 bail, on condition that he does nottake part in any other illegal protests.
“It will take much more than this to getus to change course. This was a peacefuldemonstration disrespected by authoritieswho used pre-1994-style tactics. We will notthrow in the towel – we are not scared of thisadministration.”
On Friday, hundreds of protesters werebarred from reaching the common, as policemonitored the routes and threatened partic-ipants with arrest as they walked and gath-ered at the designated meeting points.
Various protesters told People’s Post thatpeople are “too scared” of a face-off with thepolice, and opted to rather “back down” inthe face of law enforcement.
When People’s Post visited the commonhours before the protest, locals said they be-lieved the Metro Police would “manage tokeep those hooligans out”.
“They are going about things the wrongway,” a woman, who asked to be known onlyas Pat, said indignantly. “There are processeswhich need to be followed by the organisers.They should be faced with the full wrath ofthe law.
“This is a dignified area and such behav-iour should not be tolerated.”
John Richardson nodded in agreement.“I understand that they are living in abso-
lutely dreadful conditions but what they aredoing is simply not justified.
“They have to respect the common as a nat-ural habitat and recreational area. This isn’ta piece of veld where they can just do whatthey like.”
But protesters were determined to contin-ue with the march, and weren’t prepared toback down without a fight.
“These white people will never understandwhat we go through every day,” Desmond Ti-tus said angrily. “They live in their cushyhouses while we are moved to overpopulatedareas like Delft and Blikkiesdorp. Why?There is enough space on that stupid common

In the aftermath, the City of Cape Town andpolice find themselves taking flack for alleg-edly acting “too harshly” against the smallgroup of protesters which police outnum-bered and sprayed with blue dye to have themdisperse.
Organisers believed to be supported by theSA Council of Churches, Cosatu and the SANGO Coalition are intent on lodging a com-plaint with the SA Human Rights Commis-sion, and with another protest planned forSaturday, the pressure continues.
In 2008 the City’s housing backlog stood atapproximately 300 000 registered applicants,but the City estimated that in reality, about400 000 houses were needed.
With figures this high is it a surprise thatthe electorate, living in backyards and infor-mal settlements, would want luscious publicopen spaces in more affluent areas?
The facts speak: The basic need of housingis not met for so many; the gathering was ille-gal. That said, was the extent of action takenby the police justified?
How feasible is the idea of converting pub-lic open spaces in more affluent areas intohouses for the poor; especially when comingup against a site of heritage and ecologicalvalue, such as the Common?
And what will the building of low-cost hous-ing mean for existing residents and ratepay-ers who provide the City with a fair portionof its annual budget?
In the context of our turbulent political his-tory, do such demands even deserve a serioushearing in post-apartheid SA?

Criticism of local dancers ‘unfair’YOUR report on ballroom dancing (“SA ball-room champ off to Italy”, People’s Post Tues-day 24 January) and Stephanie van der Poll’snegative criticism of local dancers are unfair.

Cyclists must respect othersWE are often told to be careful of cyclists,but they are often the law breakers.
Huge sums have been spent by CapeTown City Council putting cycling tracksall over but they are not used.
I live in Rosebank and travel along Lies-beeck Parkway to work each day.
Every day, some cyclist weaves in andout of the traffic at peak hour.
There is a cycle track from Alma Roadthrough toStationRoad,Observatory, buthow often is it used?
A route that I also use regularly is thatover Ou Kaapse Weg and there too cyclistscome down towards Constantia two andthree abreast sometimes – taking the lastbend on the wrong side of the road and wemotorists have to get out of the way.
A couple of Sundays ago, between 07:00and 07:30 I was driving along BelmontRoad, Rondebosch, towards the MainRoad.
I had three cyclists riding abreast infront of me and hooted (asking them togive way). My hoot was ignored and theycontinue riding this way over the bridgeand down towards Main Road.
If I had knocked into them I would havebeen to blame.
Cyclists are also often seen ridingabreast from Fish Hoek to Simonstown.

Obey the rules of the roadI FULLY support Mark Kleinschmidt’splea to respect all road users (“Write tous”, People’s Post, 24 January).
Unfortunately, he does not stress thefact that cyclists are also required to obeyroad laws.
Sadly, records show that a fair propor-tion of cyclist accidents are caused by thecyclist ignoring the law.
To illustrate: on Thursday 26 January
at approximately 7:00 my wife and I madeto cross Lansdowne Road at Second Aveunder the (supposed) protection of the pe-destrian green light, when a cyclist camefull speed down Lansdowne, forcing us tojump out of his way, and showing no re-gard for the red light against him.

Moodley’s load of hogwashI WAS both bemused and astonished at con-victed killer Donovan Moodley’s audaciousmotion for a retrial, and his startling allega-tions made against top South African sleuthdetective Piet Byleveld.
He alleges Byleveld recreated the allegedmurder scene and fabricated incriminatingevidence, which resulted in Moodley beingsentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for kid-napping and murder, and 10 years for extor-tion.
Moodley’s application to the Johannes-burg High Court is preposterous, and thiscunning killer has taken seven years tohatch his latest evil scheme, claiming thathis incarceration was “unfair, unjust anddishonest” – for him to languish in prison fora crime that he did not commit!
What a load of hogwash!Whose sympathy is Moodley attempting
to obtain?
My perception is that Moodley has jumpedon to the “go easy on convicted criminals”bandwagon, along with convicted fraudsterSchabir Shaik and former national policecommissioner Jackie Selebi, the latter twogentlemen receiving “judicial lenience”through their alleged medical condition.
Does Moodley seriously believe he can pullthe wool over the judiciary’s eyes?
It will be a catastrophic travesty of justiceif the new developments in the tragic LeighMatthews murder leads to Moodley being ac-quitted – heaven forbid!

Let’s enjoy a carnage-free tripLIKE most responsible South Africans, I amvery concerned about the carnage on ourroads.
Being a keen motorcyclist, I have noticedthat many scooter riders and motorcyclistsbecome road accident statistics because theyhave not had the correct training to ride theirscooter or motorcycle in a safe manner. Sec-ondly, they put themselves in danger becausethey have little or no traffic and road safetyriding skills. Thirdly, there is no motorcycleriding school in this region that specializes intraining beginner and novice riders.
In an effort to promote “safe” riding within
the motorcycling community I have now es-tablished a motorcycle and scooter ridingacademy in the Southern Suburbs. This isaimed at beginner and novice riders and in-cludes learner licence training, traffic androad safety etc.
I have done the required courses as speci-fied by the SA Road Traffic Act and the CapeTown Traffic Department and am a registeredmotorcycle instructor.

Claiming to be against religionsIGNORANCE and half-truths are the hall-marks of those who claim to be against reli-gions.
Islam is a of life. Genuine Muslims will ad-here to the Q’uran, and ignorant ones won’t.
This applies to the followers of all religions.Jason Bosche has not given the context of thechapters and verses he quotes of the Q’uranin last week’s People’s Post.
When one takes a verse out of context itshows that the person is deliberately lying oris an ignorant person and wants to cause con-fusion. The first verse he quotes is chap 4 v89, which states:
4: 89. “They but wish that ye should rejectFaith, as they do, and thus be on the same foot-ing (as they): but take not friends from theirranks until they flee In the way of Allah (fromwhat is forbidden). But if they turn renegades,seize them and slay them wherever ye findthem; and (in any case) take no friends orhelpers from their ranks.
The next verse states:4:90. Except those who join a group between
whom and you there is a treaty (of peace), orthose who approach you with hearts restrain-ing them from fighting you as well as fightingtheir own people. If Allah had pleased, Hecould have given them power over you, andthey would have fought you: therefore if theywithdraw from you but fight you not, and (in-stead) send you (guarantees of) peace, then Al-lah hath opened no way for you (to waragainst them).
As one can see, this referred to a wartimeperiod and the next verse makes clear thatfighting should be only if the enemy wants tocontinue thebattle, otherwisewithdraw is thecommand!
The next quote is from chapter 8 v 12:8:12. Remember Thy Lord inspired the an-
gels (with the message): “I am with you: givefirmness to the believers: I will instil terror
into the hearts of the unbelievers: smite yeabove their necks and smite all their finger-tips off them.”
When one reads the verses following thenone reads that again the situation is awartimeone, pertaining to a battle: Let us see the con-text:
8:13. This because they contended (resistedby fighting) against Allah and His Messenger.If any contend against Allah and His Messen-ger, Allah is strict in punishment. 8:14. Thus(will it be said): “Taste ye then of the (punish-ment): for those who resist Allah, is the penal-ty of the Fire.”
8:15. O ye who believe! When ye meet theunbelievers in hostile array (in battle), neverturn your backs to them.
8:16. If any do turn his back to them on sucha Day – unless it be in a stratagem of war, orto retreat to a troop (of his own) – he drawson himself the wrath of Allah, and his abodeis hell, an evil refuge (indeed)
As one can see, Bosche is not truthful, butis misquoting the context and exposes his ig-norance and his lack of knowledge of theQ’uran. Regarding the hadith which he saysspeaks of violence the prophet Muhammadadvocated; he again exposes his ignorance ofthe hadith history. Any person knowing thehistory of hadith will know that during thelifetime of the prophet no person, be it hiscompanions or family members, ever wrotedown his sayings.
These so-called hadith were written about250 to 300 years after his death by non-Arabs.(Only the Q’uran was permitted to be writtenand the first Q’uran is the memorised one astill today the Q’uran is being memorised asis well known by even non-Muslims). That iswhy no Muslim will accept any saying attrib-uted to theProphetwhichdirectly contradictsthe Q'uran, and this is made clear in:
Chapter 69 verses 43-47: “(This is) a messagesent down from the Lord of the worlds; andif the apostle (Muhammad) were to invent anysayings in our name, We should certainlyseize him by his right hand, and We shouldcertainly then cut off the artery of his heart:nor could any of you withhold him (from Ourwrath).”
68/4: “And thou Muhammad (standest) onan exalted standard of character.”
The last point I wish to make is that theserejectors of religion are phonies, because theywant to adhere to the norms of religion likeengagements, marriage and family social con-ditions etc. They have no right to get marriedas marriage is sacred in all religions but notfor those who are atheists. Now show me oneatheist who will be prepared to allow anotherman to date his wife, or mother or daughter?If they are truly non-believers in any religionthen they should accept that as part of an opensociety, marriage is not part of their system.Remember, they have no religious book asguidance, so they cannot dispute this claim.AHMED MOOSACrawford

THE football fraternity and sports fansall around the country were stunned bythe news that yet another talented,young athlete has been killed.
Jeffrey Ntuka, a former Bafana Bafanadefender, was stabbed to death near hisgirlfriend’s house in Kroonstad in the FreeState on Saturday 21 January, after report-edly asking someone for a match. He was26.
The defender was once considered to besuch a bright prospect that he was signedby English football powerhouse Chelsea in2003, but his progress was hampered by al-cohol abuse and indiscipline.
Unfortunately, his story is not an uncom-mon one in local football – where playersoften seem to rise from obscurity to star-dom, and from poverty to relative wealth,overnight. And then plummet back down toearth even faster.
Jabu Pule and Mbulelo Mabizela are per-haps two of the most famous examples ofextremely talented footballers who went off
the rails after struggling to deal with theirnew-found fame and wealth, but there aremany others.
Despite the high prevalence of this prob-lem, the South African Football Associa-tion, the Premier Soccer League and theclubs which employ players are yet to comeup with a successful way to prevent it.
Footballers need to be taught the neces-sary life skills to stop themselves from fall-ing prey to drugs, alcohol and excessivelifestyles, and a support system for playersalso needs to be developed.
Together, the stakeholders need to en-sure that players are taught, from a youngage, how to stay in control off the pitch, aswell as on it. The sad reality in South Africais that not all citizens are taught this athome or at school.
ThePSLand the clubs in it benefit greatlyfrom the talents of these players, and al-though they pay their salaries, they owe itto the players and supporters to make surethey lead healthy lives. It also makes sensefrom a business perspective.
Professionals clubs have been guilty ofabandoning troubled players too quickly inthe past.
Although it’s understandable that a com-pany which exists to make as much profitas possible, and employs players to help
them achieve this, would not want to carryon paying a player if he is not performing,it is not acceptable that a club can abandona player without helping him find the helphe needs.

SERIOUS divisions emerged in the ranks ofthe South African Baseball Associationduring the organization’s aborted annualgeneral meeting, which took place at CapeTown International Airport at the week-end.
The election of a new president was puton ice after it emerged that Mark Alexan-der, the incumbent president, could nothave his way in naming Greg Lenders, thecurrent president of Western Provincebaseball, as his successor.
Alexander, who is also the current presi-dent of SA Rugby, indicated last year thathe would vacate the position, but it now ap-pears that he will hold on to the post untilhe has his way.
Edwin Bennett, CEO of SA Baseball, con-firmed that the elections have been post-poned.
“We need to workshop the proposed newstructure to meet the requirements of thechallenges we are facing in the future,” saidBennett. “It was with this in mind that wepostponed the meeting. The election willthen take place and the regions are wel-come to nominate their own candidates.”
The election of office bearers has nowbeen postponed until 31 March, but this didnot go down well with some delegates.
Adelegatewhodidnotwhich tobenamed“for strategic reasons” said the timing, ven-ue and funding for delegates to attend themeeting was questionable.
He said it would have been more viableto have held the meeting in Gauteng, wherethe majority of regions are situated. Somedelegates are understood to have traveledlong hours by bus and car to attend.
Several delegates from the association’s15 regions support the nomination of JohnOliver, head of South Africa Schools Base-ball, to take over from Alexander.
This appears to have been the hiccup thatprompted Alexander to ask for a postpone-ment until the new structure has beenworkshopped.
Oliver confirmed that he wasprepared to take over the president’s posi-tion if elected. “Yes, I was prepared to takeover from Alexander. This was only be-cause the president (Alexander) said hewas stepping down,” said Oliver.
“I will now, however, reconsider this po-sition when the AGM is reconvened.”
Some delegates said the meetingwas a “waste of time, money and resourc-es”.
Non-racialsport in theWestern CapeMARK WARD
THE state of non-racialism and developmentin Western Cape sport will be the subject ofan independently hosted symposium.
Cheryl Roberts, a respected sports activistwho in recent yearshas actively campaignedfor female participation in sport, will hostthe event in conjunction with the Sport andRecreation Council of the City of Cape Town.
The former table tennis star, who partici-pated at the 1992 Olympic Games in Athens,said the reason for thehostingof the seminaris the slow pace of transformation in SouthAfrican sport.
“This is a platform to engage in dialogueand conversation about our guiding princi-ple, non-racialism in sport,” said Roberts.
“It will focus on, and try to thrash out,what we should know and implement whenwe talk about development and developingsport.”
The event will take place on Saturday 4January from 09:00 at the Athlone Stadium.
According to Roberts, the symposium isindependently hosted.
It is open to all, especially officials and ad-ministrators at provincial level, leaders ofsports councils, district associations, cluband community sports structures, coachesand selectors, tertiary education sports offi-cials and government officials.
“We need many minds to be exposed tonon-racialism in sport.
Twenty years after sports unification, fol-lowing decades of anti-apartheid sport strug-gle, we have been catapulted into an era ofmoney and professional sport, with class,colour and gender imbalances,” said Rob-erts.
“Development is vital for every sport ifthey are to survive into the future, but par-ticipation has, over this period, dwindled.
“I don’t think the emphasis should be onelite participation but on building the foun-dation of sport, in conjunction with localgovernment and sports federations.
By implementing development pro-grammes, we must work from a non-racialperspective.”
Additionally, all delegates attending thesymposium will receive a copy of Roberts’book titled “No Normal Sport In An Abnor-mal Society.

Hellenic namereturns to cityLIAM MOSES
FORMER Premier Soccer League team Hellenichave reformed almost eight years after closingdown when their Premier League franchise wassold to Benoni Premier United.
The team, which is now based in Milnerton, startedtraining in November last year and will field threeteams in the Super League of the Cape Town TygerbergFootball Association.
According to Grant Veitch, operations manager atHellenic, the club was restarted after he and MarkByrne, former Hellenic player and coach, and the cur-rent director of football, approached the Hajidakis fam-ily to purchase the naming rights.
The Hellenic name was then superimposed on toBlouberg City Football Club, and a large contingent ofstaff set up shop at the team’s Tygerhof base.
Veitch says developing Cape Town’s abundant foot-ball talent will be the main aim of the team for the im-mediate future.
“We think there is something missing in Cape Townfootball at the moment. There are certain clubs andacademies around that say they are the benchmark foryouth development,” said Veitch.
“We believe that the benchmark should at anotherlevel, which we think we can offer.”
The club will function primarily as a football acade-my, hoping to develop players that they can sell on toprofessional sides for a profit, and Veitch hopes thatthe Hellenic name will help to attract these talentedyoungsters to Milnerton.
Veitch, whose father played at left back for the team,said that he and Byrne also hope to rebuild the Hellenicbrand to its former glory.
“The name will attract a lot of attention and we thenhave to live up to that expectation.
“It’s very important that this name is looked after,to the best of our ability,” said Veitch. “And our aspira-tions are to get Hellenic to where it was all those yearsago, up into the PSL.
“It’s a very long term project, but at the same timeit’s something that we are doing as a 10-15 year pro-gramme.”
Veitch and Byrne say they see themselves as a “pro-fessional youth structure” and have taken the issue ofnurturing young talent seriously.
Hellenic have three coaches for each one of the threeteams currently at the club, as well as a dedicated goal-keeping coach and a biokineticist.
The size of the coaching staff is much larger thanmost teams of Hellenic’s size, but it is the quality ofthe individuals which is even more surprising.
Byrne himself is the former head of development atUdinese, while respected U17and U13 coaches NevenPayne and Cecil Ntlebi held the same positions at theoriginal team before it closed down.
Veitch said that three of the coaching staff are Unionof European Football Association (UEFA) accreditedand one has the highest level of South African FootballAssociation (SAFA) coaching certificate.
According to Byrne, the high number of staff mem-bers will help the club to develop the players technical-ly, mentally and physically.
“We have said that our programme is to develop theindividual holistically,” said Byrne
“I have played overseas, I have coached overseas, Iknow the levels that are required, and it’s hard.
“We have too many players who go overseas and thenwithin a year or a year-and-a-half, they come backagain because they can’t survive. There are Cape Townboys who go to Johannesburg and within a year theycome back, mainly because they aren’t prepared prop-erly. That’s why we are developing these kids holisti-cally.”

ON MONDAY morning, 23 Janu-ary, Roberta Johnson was not at thedoor to meet me but when she madeher entrance minutes later into theloungeof theirhome inLotusRiver,she looked sprightly, and smiled asshe greeted me.
Last week I set off to trace the re-cipients of the Sport Legendsawards who live in the SouthernSuburbs.
The event took place just beforeChristmas but Roberta and her hus-band Bernard could not attend thefunction because they were at a
championship in Bloemfontein.The former ballroom stars werepart were of a group of 33, inductedas Western Cape Sport Legends forDance Sport.
On Friday it was with great sad-ness that I heard Roberta died sud-denly on Wednesday 25 January, aday after the article appeared inPeoples Post.
I did not know Roberta (62) beforeour meeting as dance sport was nev-er high on my sporting agenda. Itwas only my obsession to honourour legends that set me off on thiscourse meeting the couple.
The 25 minutes in the company of
Roberta and her husband, Bernard,was inspirational and left a lastingimpression on me. I was glad tohave had the opportunity of meet-ing her.
Her husband, Bernard, said. “Itcame so suddenly. She died on herway to hospital after suffering com-plication related to thrombosis,which she suffered from for a longtime.”
She will be buried on Tuesday 31January from the Good Hope Chris-tian Centre in Ottery.
