The matter was discussed at the April Protea Subcouncil meeting. Garreth Bloor, Mayoral Committee member for Economic, Environmental and Spatial Planning, says there are cur- rently no pending applications for the City-owned land. “However, the develop- er is expecting he will be given an oppor- tunity to negotiate to purchase the land, now that the environmental and land use authorisations are in place,” he says. The two investigations, launched by the NPA and Hawks earlier this month, will investigate possible irregularities sur- rounding the appointment of the environ- mental consultants who prepared the first environmental impact assessment (EIA) application. “It will determine the next step (in the process), if any, once the outcome of this process is known,” Bloor says. The two authorities were informed of the suspected irregularities by Princess Vlei Forum (PVF) member Kelvin Co- chrane. He alleges the acceptance of the bid by Insight Property Developers was prem- ised on an independent EIA, undertaken by Tshukudo Environmental Services be- tween 2002 and 2004 (“Swooping in on Princess Vlei,” People’s Post, 12 March). At the time of the application, there were two board members of Tshukudo who may have been in conflict of interest, as they were listed as board members of In- sight at the same time. A third board mem- ber signed an oath in July 2002 stating his company had no connection with or inter- est in Insight Property.Tshukudo was liq- uidated in 2005, with Insight listed as one of the creditors. But a tug-of-war ensued between developers, authorities and those opposing the development since the devel- opment was first proposed in 1996. Bloor says the City could “negotiate with the developer with a view to selling the land, or it could decline to do so”. PVF spokesperson Philip Bam says he recently discussed the matter with deputy mayor Ian Nielson. “There are questions surrounding (who) the applicant (is),” he says. “We will, however, continue planning towards the bid submitted by the forum to the City for Princess Vlei to form part of the 2014 World Design Capital project.” The plan, which entails revamping the property into an urban park, was submit- ted to the City earlier this month. The matter was discussed at the AprilProtea Subcouncil meeting.

Garreth Bloor, Mayoral Committeemember for Economic, Environmentaland Spatial Planning, says there are cur-rently no pending applications for theCity-owned land. “However, the develop-er is expecting he will be given an oppor-tunity to negotiate to purchase the land, now that the environmental and land useauthorisations are in place,” he says.

THE HEIGHTS: PRIVACY, AT LAST

Joy at newportableflushing loosTARREN-LEE HABELGAARN

RESIDENTS of The Heightsinformal settlements willbe able to enjoy the privacy

of their own privies. And, theysay, the fight for water comforthas been worth it after they re-ceived 1500 new portable toilets.

Shaun August, chairperson ofthe City’s Utility Services Port-folio Committee and ward coun-cillor, handed over the new com-pact portable toilets in a ceremo-ny at the Seawinds SportsComplex.

August says the beneficiariesof these portable flush toilets areresidents of various informalsettlements commonly referredto as The Heights.

They include OvercomeHeights, Military Heights, Vil-lage Heights and Hill View 1 inthe Seawinds and Hill View are-as.

“The portable flush toilets willnot replace the existing servicesof chemical and full-flush toiletsin the area, but will rather addto the provisions of sanitationfacilities and enhance the digni-ty and safety of residents,” saysAugust.

Jessica Mtambo, of the Over-come Heights Committee, saysthey have been fighting with the council togive them new toilets for the past five years. She feels relieved and overjoyed that theirplea has finally been adhered to.

“Every evening it is like day time outsidethe way gangsters are busy at night. It wasvery unsafe to go to the toilets during thenight,” says Mtambo.

“There were some nights when I was tooscared to go outside and then I had to peein a bucket, which I could only clean thenext morning. So these new toilets are bet-ter for our health, too.”

Irene Johnson was ecstatic about her newtoilet and says it will make a big difference.

“Some nights it is so cold to go outside, but now we can use our toilets in ourhomes. I can’t wait to get home and try itout,” says Johnson with a beaming smile.

For resident Soemaja Marthinus it is a re-lief to have her own toilet for her family to

use.“Before we got the toilets we were two

families sharing a toilet outside, but noweach family can have their own toilet. Ithink this is much more healthy and hygi-enic, especially for my children,” says Mar-thinus.

SOCIAL networks have become an onlinespace to chat and make new friends. However, a Facebook page that encourag-

es women, especially teens, to post half- orfully-naked photos of themselves for all us-ers to see has sparked controversy.People’s Post readers share their thoughts.

SocialSocialsexploitssexploits

WENDY NDABA says teenage pregnancy is alreadyat a worrying level and such platforms will onlyfuel young people’s sexual curiosity. “It also in-creases the potential of human trafficking andtakes their attention away from schoolwork.”

PRISCILLA WENTZEL says she is absolutelyagainst such networking pages. “If you don’t re-spect yourself, how do you expect other peopleto respect you? These girls are attracting all thewrong guys by acting this way.”

JOSEPH FREDRICKS believes the moral standingof young people is not where it should be. “Whenpeople act or dress a certain way you alreadyjudge before getting to know them. Somethinglike this does not give them a good image.”

BRENDA NGXOLI says there should rather be pag-es for drug support. “There’s already such a highchild prostitution rate in our country and it’s pro-moted with such pages. The youth are bored andneed more active facilities in their communities.”

RORY DUNN says participants are degradingthemselves by posting their photos. “Womenneed to respect themselves and not post anyhalf- or fully-naked pictures on any site. Whatthey are doing is not morally correct.”

SHAMEEMAH FRANK says people who take partin such forums don’t think much of themselves.“It’s disgraceful. The group members are just abunch of girls with a low self-esteem who are do-ing this for attention.”

ZIYAAD FRANK says parents have an importantrole to play when it comes to their children’s digni-ty. “They should go through their children’sphones and check what kind of things they getup to.”

are to be inoculated for these highly conta-gious diseases in amass campaign over thenext few months. The campaign, which was launched by

national health minister Aaron Motsoale-di yesterday, will see children under fiveyears old vaccinated regardless of their im-munisation status.Polio and measles are caused by a virus

and are potentially fatal in toddlers.Sithembiso Magubane, the spokesper-

son for the provincial health department, says almost 488 000 children between theages of nine months and five years will beinoculated against measles while 561 000children in the same age groupwill get two

doses of polio vaccine, which will be ad-ministered within four weeks from eachother.Provincial health minister Theuns

Botha says the department plans is to im-munise 95% of children under the age offive for both measles and polio during thiscampaign.Thiswill ensure that the dangerous com-

plications that can be caused by measlesand the suffering and disability caused bypolio is reduced, he says.“It is every parent and guardian’s duty

to take their child to the clinic for immuni-sation and to sign a consent form for thechild if he or she attends crèche,” Bothaadds.Measles is ahighly infectious illness that

spreads from person to person via dropletswhen an infected person coughs or sneez-es. It can lead to serious complications like

pneumonia, blindness, brain infection oreven death.Polio is an infectious disease affecting

the nervous system that can result in per-manent paralysis, deformity and some-times death. A person with polio cannot becured because the nerve cells destroyed bythe virus never recover their function.Children will get their vaccinations at

THANK God it is not planes, trains and automobiles, butonly Golden Arrow bus drivers on strike.

Cape Town – and Capetonians in general – can ill affordgetting to work late, nor having to cough up for escalatingpublic transport costs.

With the bus strike, the congestion nightmare on CapeTown highways is fast turning into the horror that is Jo-hannesburg during peak hour traffic.

Not that there is such a thing in Jo’burg.Traffic is awful throughout the day for the citizens up

north. It is hardly a desired effect that is the legacy of one per-

son to a car. While the taxi industry – and probably the railway serv-

ices – is smiling at the sudden unexpected windfall, thecommuters have to be satisfied with an apology from Gold-en Arrow.

Thebus companysays there are “nowinners in this situ-ation as passengers are inconvenienced, staff membersare not receiving wages, the company is not operating andthe entire economy is suffering”.

One wonders how it is possible for drivers affiliated tothe SA Transport and Allied Workers’ Union and theTransport and Omnibus Workers’ Union to demand an18% wage increase.

That was the first wage hike demand. But parties holding talks facilitated by the Commission

for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA)failed to reach an agreement last week.

John Dammert, the spokesperson for Golden Arrow BusServices, has said that unions have decreased their wageincrease demand to 13%.

And employers have upped their offer to 8%.The CCMA, however, has suggested parties settle at 9%.Meanwhile, the commuters are left hanging – or wait-

ing.

Imagine lives of the poorI have a passion for the poor and needy.

Let me just say “thank you” to the braveeditors who have dared to publish my let-ters. I am truly grateful.

Since my retirement, I am so grateful forall theblessingsmost people take for granted– the clothing, my home, the food on the ta-ble, my warm bed, my burning fire place inthe cold and my vehicle.

I am also very much aware of those lessfortunate.

I want to challenge (the media) to dedicatea reporter (and) photographer (to) interviewa person who has lowered themselves to

scratch in a filthy bin.Go to a poor pensioner’s home and get pic-

tures of the things we, the privileged, do notsee and tell their story.

This is not a guilt trip, but an understand-ing of real life in “Struggle Avenue”.

Close your eyes and, for a brief moment, imagine you are poor – very poor.Keith Blake, OtteryPeople’s Post is intimately aware of the needsamong readers and the good work done byNGOs. This newspaper regularly publishesstories of people in hardship, including thosecaught in poverty and evictions. – Deputy Ed

Will this province remain attractive?BESIDES Table Mountain and the sea, theMother City has enticed many non-Capeto-nians to its bosom. My interaction with col-leagues born and bred in Gauteng and theother provinces, have often (resulted inthem expressing) their desire to relocate toCape Town.

The sporting fraternity has been no excep-tion, with the Stormers’ acquisitions wingerBryanHabana andElton Plaatjies from Gau-teng.

Cricket enthusiasts will be enthralled tolearn that World No 1 Test and one-day bats-man Hashim Amla has been lured by theCape Cobras. Our gain is KwaZulu Natal’sloss, since Amla will be purchasing a homein Cape Town for his young family.

And on the political front, this province is

by far oneof thebest-run city’s inSouthAfri-ca, and the record books bear testimony tosame. The DA-led provincial governmenthas made great strides in respect of its blueblitz campaigns in the townships, and withthe 2014 local elections, hopes to capture 30%of the national vote. TheKnow yourDA cam-paign depicting Nelson Mandela and DAfounder Helen Suzman has resulted in asour grapes attitude from the ANC. The elec-tion battle by the ANC to gain control andthe DA to retain Cape Town will be the mostfiercely contested.

Depending on the results at the polls, theburning question is: Will the Mother City re-tain its attractive influence after the 2014elections?Mark Kleinschmidt, Kenwyn

Be warned on domestic worker conmanWHILE out walking in the Kendal Road ar-ea, I encountered an older woman who wasin tears, asking me the way to Wynberg. Shewas heading towards Muizenberg and wasclearly lost.

I redirected her and then she broke downcompletely and told me of her experience, inbroken English which I barely understood.I wished then that I were fluent in isiXhosa.

It seems sheadvertised forworkand some-one named “James” responded, offering herR200 for casual work – a sum she considereda fortune.

She left home at 04:30 and was picked up

by “James” in his car, presumably in Wyn-berg. On the way he made some lewd sugges-tions and then told her she was too old forhim.

He promptly dropped her at the side of theroad, telling her to walk home, all this with-out compensation.

I now wonder if this was a con and, if so,be warned. If not, then all I can say is that“James” is a nasty piece of work. May hisarmpits be infested with fleas.

The final outcome I will leave you to pon-der.Dorty, Email

Your SMSes. I fully agree with the two residents. Ihave being living next to the park formore than 40 years and to see the thingshappening now is very sad indeed.Incidents of alcohol and drug abuse, loitering and damage to park property –to name a few – are common occurrenc-es. Something must be done. Concernedresident

. I feel sick when I see pupils sitting out-side school gates, while the school is in func-tion.Teachers andprincipals arenogood forteaching, as they suspend pupils – innocentchildren. The teachers are unproductive.Cosatu and Sadtu are fighting the govern-ment. Why don’t they come to schools andteach the pupils skills and help to improvethe (situation)? Stop worrying about themoney you are earning. Give back to poorsocieties. You will just create problems asyou fight the government and the innocentchildren fade away, while the pockets oftheir parents and governments will run dry.You won’t even see it.

. We need to realise, as beautiful as CapeTown is, therearemanydangers andwomenparticularly cannot be alone in quiet places.Caution and vigilance are essential, and, sadly, safety in numbers should be our mot-to, especially when it comes to our youngpeople. A concerned mom

. Regarding the letter “Leave trolleypushers alone”. Trolley pushers stroll downthe street shouting for scrap. They are a dis-turbance to those who are sleeping duringthe day, because they have to work nightshift. Some other means of income must befound for them. Besides, they become quiterude when no scrap is found.

LOST LOVER, DIVORCE

021 839 5967

I am Nicholas from Fish Hoek, I was financially poor all my

properties were repossessed to make matters worse my wife

left me after debts had come to my come up to my neck. My

children turned to all kinds of evil activities. I triedmany native

doctors, but with no success. All all I had wasme and the dark

world. The day I heard about DR KIM speak on Algoa FM

brought me back to life. I visited him and he prayed and

washed me with his spiritual water and gave me a magic ring.

There was no way I could pay him. Well, your only answer is

DRKIM. Try himbecause I guarentee that he is the key to all!

But All Stars have a game in hand and willlikely restore their two point lead, and re-take the summit when they face Ajax CapeTown at 19:00 tonight (Tuesday 30 April).

Glendene need All Stars to lose once ordraw twice if they are to permanently annexfirst place, take the Safa Second Division ti-tle and qualify for the NFD play-offs.

Glendene coach Duran Francis says theclub will not focus on their rivals and in-stead keep the pressure on the championselect by winning all five of their last games.

“For me it’s about what we do. If we weregoing to be worried about All Stars then wewould have been stressed all season, be-cause they have been playing really goodfootball,” says Francis.

“We have to be realistic and not disrespectto the other teams, but we want to pick upthe full points against everybody. It’s not go-ing to be easy because we are playing teamswho are fighting relegation.

“We know, as a club and squad, it’s not go-ing to be easy and that it’s up to us and howmuch we want it. That goes for FC Tygerberg

and All Stars as well. Whoever wants it, willhave to fight hard.”

All Stars and Glendene have lost the sameamount of games, but All Stars have won onemore, while Glendene have drawn one more.

The Lansdowne-based club have just fivegames left, with all five of their opponentsin the bottom or lower top half of the table.

Francis’ side will face Mitchell’s PlainUnited (A), Old Mutual (H), Jomo Powers(A), Peacemakers (H) and finish off againstIdas Valley (A).

Francis, the former Bay United captainand Santos player believes his team, andthird placed FC Tygerberg, can still win thetitle if the squad’s younger players can han-dle the pressure.

“It’s a matter of who can handle the pres-sure. You try to tell the players not to worryand that there’s no pressure, but there aresome young boys in the teams and none ofthem have really played in situations likethis,” he says.

“It’s difficult – as a coach, you have to un-derstand that some of the boys will feel thepressure.

“It’s good that they experience thesethings. Whether the team goes up or not, atleast they experienced that in an early stageof their careers.”

Francis adds even if Glendene do not winthe league this year, fighting for the title andplaying in high pressure situations willhave helped his players improve and buildcharacter.

RUGBY: CITY BOWL DERBY

Hammies hammer SK WalmersLIAM MOSES

HAMILTONS fired awarning shot at theirSuper League A title ri-

vals after a crushing victoryoverCityBowl neighbours SKWalmers on Saturday.Hammies scored six tries

and conceded just one, to beatthe Green Point club 39-11.But despite the comprehen-sive victoryhead coachAntonMoolman believes his sidehave still not hit top gear.“Durb-Bell, Stellenbosch

and SK Walmers have all en-joyed the Varsity Cup andCommunity Cup, so they havehad a number of tight gamesunder their belt,” he says.“We have had friendlies

here in Cape Town – the ma-jority of which we won by 60or 70 points. Our first test waslast week, against Stellen-bosch, and besides two softtries, we were really competi-tive in the game. So our sea-son will get better. We justhave to make sure we contin-ue the climb in terms of per-formance and execution.”Moolman adds, although

his side is currently focusedon short-term goals, they willbe challenging for the title ifthey improve as expected.“If we do that, come of the

end of the seasonwewill be upthere and challenging. But forme, it’s game by game – andDurb-Bell next week.”Hammies dominated the

derby from the kickoff andscored just seconds into thegame, when fullback Jonnovan Zyl crossed over in thecorner. The hosts increased their

lead with a penalty fromWilko de Wet and a try by leftwing Dougal Robertson, butSK responded with two penal-ties from the boot of scrum-half Morne Adams. This leftthe half-time score reading13-6.

Hammies again crossedsoon after the break, withVanZyl dotting down around thethird minute, but the visitorshit back with a try from rightwing Layton Bezuidenhout.Walmers struggled to de-

fend against Hamiltons’ pow-er at the contact point, intelli-gent attacking around thefringes and skilful off-loading.The game was then put to

bed when Hammies scoredthree tries in the last 20 min-utes, with Dustin Jinka, Ni-cholas Pearson and WaldoPrinsloo all claiming five-pointers.Moolman chalked up the

win as “one of the more re-sounding” victories overSKW during his tenure ascoach.“I enjoy trying to play a to-

tal brand of rugby. In the off-season we have worked hardon trying to take our game toa different level,” he says.“Last year is in the past, but

there were games that we lostvery narrowly. The guys arefocused and they have settheir season goals, and theywork hard at training. Youcan only play as well as youropponents let you and Ithought we created good mo-mentum today. When youhave momentum your off-loads start to work, allowingthe guys to enjoy the gamemore than when on the backfoot.”Hamiltons face another

stern test this Saturday, whenthey travel to Durbanville-Bellville.Durb-Bell,who finished sec-

ond in the league last year, claimed a narrow 20-18 winover UCT on Saturday.V Meanwhile, in Super League B,Primrose beat Hands and Heart 45-19 to record their fourth consecutivevictory. The win has cemented Prim-rose’s position at the top of the logand further enhanced their title cre-dentials.
