Dear reader,

I’ve received interesting and varied re-sponses to my last column, with many ap-plauding my running and a few questioningwhether I was “seriously doing this”.

Those who know me well enough, willknow that I don’t commit light-ly, neither do I conjure up sto-ries. I’m known for being – of-ten to my detriment – too hon-est.

To those of little faith: I knowI’ve mastered the art of lookingchilled, but I have witnesseswho can back me up, in theform of my running mates. They see me puffing and pant-ing alongside them Tuesdaysand Thursdays, occasionally yielding for afew brief seconds to remove my orthotics, tiemy laces and pity myself for having painfulankles. I’ve lived with this pain all my lifeand it hasn’t stopped me from taking part inany sport or activity. All the more reason Ifeel a great sense of achievement on finish-ing my run, with my sights firmly set on run-ning 10km in five weeks’ time, God willing.

On a more ambitious level, I’ve heardwhispers from coach Farouk about runninga half marathon in November. Eish!

This comment from a reader reads: “I en-joyed your ‘No guts, no glory’ piece... showedthat editors are people too, who once experi-enced hardships...”

Touche, Clint! Often, people judge us bythe image and persona we project, or meas-ure our worth in terms of the positions wehold, or our status or wealth. They forget tolook past the outer at the real person, whohas had both good and bad life experiences. If you are generally a positive person, mostpeople assume that your life was a breeze, that you’ve been privileged and have neverhad any hardships.

In my profession, I am challenged nearlyevery day, on a range of issues; from diversi-ty and transformation to why I elected toprint a photo last week of our award winningadvertising colleagues. I am fair game andcontroversial enough, by virtue of being aneditor of colour on editions as diverse as the

10 People’s Post publishes eachweek. I’ve been asked whether myeditorial decisions are influencedby my being Coloured. A fair ques-tion I responded to by citing the me-dia’s role as one of reporting news, informing, educating and enter-taining; but more importantly, oneof using the powerful platform ofour newspapers to reflect our coun-try’s diverse landscape and sensi-tively play our role in transforma-

tion through the stories we tell.Behind the scenes, story development in

our newsroom is intricate, from conceptual-ising to final editing and print. We brief ourjournalists extensively on story angles, themultiple voices their stories should containand the pictures to complement text. Mostimportantly, we respect that each of our 10zoned papers have its own identity, commu-nity and heartbeat and should reflect that.

I welcome your feedback, good and bad, asit opens the door to honest engagement. Ifour country is to achieve true democracy, upfront conversations such as the ones Ihave with my readers must take place, notonly in our business interactions but in so-cial circles too. The more we express our con-cerns and insecurities, and the countlesspositives South Africans can be proud of, thecloser we will move to true reconciliation atgrassroots level – where it truly counts.

Till next time, go well!ConnectED is a weekly column, by Peo-

ple’s Post Editor, Feroza Miller-Isaacswho can be contacted on [email protected].

TONY ROBINSON

THEY don’t say how they will do it, but a smallgroup of Noordhoek environmental activistswants to get rid of the cute little grey squirrelson the Common.

Their crime? They “spread oak seeds and eattree bark”.

That is exactly what squirrelshave always done but, suddenly, the bunny-huggers find it offen-sive.

They seeoak trees and squirrelsas unwelcome aliens.

For those who don’t know it, theNoordhoek Common, at the foot ofChapman’s Peak Drive, is a won-derful community asset used forequestrian events, communityfairs, picnics, informal ball gamesand dog walking. It is graced bysome wonderful old oaks and thebeauty of the common has madeit a popular location for filmshoots.

But the greenies want to take away this com-munity playground and turn it into an indige-nous nature reserve complete with indigenousmole rats and snakes so the oaks, planes andsquirrels have to go.

Now oak trees are as much a part of the Capeas grape vines, Cape Dutch architecture andmilk tart. Theyarepart of our culturalheritage. You will find them in every Boland town and,for the most part, each tree is treasured. Stellen-

bosch, a town of knowledge and learning, takes great pride in its oaks and delights inbeing called Eikestad – Oak City.

It is the oak trees that make the WesternCape different (and better) than other partsof South Africa. And they are not invaders. They were brought here on purpose to doa job. They have served us well, providing

wonderful shade in the townsand on the boundaries of ourfamous cricket grounds.

Oaks grow slowly and withdifficulty. They are batteredby winds and storms and thisgives them great character. They record the history ofwinters past and their strug-gle for a place in the sunshould be a moral lesson to usall.

So one must ask what kindof cultural louts would wantto kill the squirrels and chopdown the oaks?

And how will they kill thesquirrels? It’s a question the bunny-huggersdon’t answer in the unsolicited documentthey have prepared on the future manage-ment of the common.

Will they try to do it quietly so that theirchildrendon’t knowabout the slaughter?Orwill they have the courage of their convic-tions and do it in the open. Perhaps theycould invite the Mayor along to perform thefirst squirrel execution. It would make astriking change from cutting ribbons. TVcoverage would be guaranteed. I’m afraidwe are dealing with humourless people af-flicted with tunnel vision. What they don’tunderstand is that the oaks are there be-cause we love them and because they are apart of our heritage. In fact, oak trees havebeen around for a lot longer than some ofthe self-appointed guardians of everythingindigenous.

So, in the end, there should be a choice. Are the unwanted aliens oak trees andsquirrels or those who would axe and butch-er them?

Now the bunny-huggerswant to kill the squirrels Behind the

public persona

Community claims halls are always lockedTAURIQ HASSAN

WAVES of concerns are passingthrough the greater Retreat ar-ea around the usage of recrea-

tional facilities and their availability tooutreach programmes run by various or-ganisations.

Issues were raised when members of thecommunity noticed that several of the facili-ties were locked, causing many of theirprojects to be either cancelled or postponed.

Among the list of halls in the area wereSheradon Park Community Recreation Cen-tre, Coniston Park Hall, Retreat CommunityCentre, Seawinds Multi Purpose Centre andtwo more facilities located in Cradock Road,Retreat.

Don Jethro, secretary for the Retreat Steen-berg Civic Association, was disturbed to findso many of the facilities locked and said:“These facilities are supposed to remain opento the community because the main purposeof these facilities is for the community to usethem.”

Jethro found six facilities locked and ques-tioned caretakerswhopointedout that thede-cision was passed down from members man-aging the facility.

“This is unacceptable and we cannot allowthis to get any worse, because you find outsid-ers gaining easy access to these facilities, butif somebody from the community wishes touse it for an event, it suddenly becomes una-vailable,” says Jethro.

Kevin Southgate, chairperson for theSteenberg Community Police Forum (CPF)and spokesperson for the Langevlei Resi-dents’ Association was “very disturbed at thelack of support” from City officials and feltthat if assistance from local councillors was

not forthcoming, a petition to the Mayor wasnext on the cards.

Two facilities located in Cradock Road, Re-treat had been out of commission for morethan a year, “with apparently no end insight”, says Southgate.

He explained that a CPF meeting wasscheduled to take place in the venue, but hadto be relocated to the Steenberg Police Sta-tions Board Room, which is able to accommo-date around20people.This becameaproblemas more than 40 people attended the meeting, meaning they had to cram into the boardroom like “sardines” with no air condition-ing.

“If that really is the case, then it is time forcouncillors to come to theparty and takeown-ership of their responsibilities by ensuringthat communities are served in the best possi-ble way,” Southgate added.

Lucinda Evans, Director at the Philisa Aba-fazi Bethu organisation, requires the facili-ties to conduct their programmes and tookoffence at officials claiming that she was notinspired in her way of thinking.

“I thought we are all working for the great-er good of humankind and here we find a statepaid employee utter this type of remarks, be-ing unprofessional and unethical,” saysEvans.

She questioned where the next batch ofyouth programmes would unfold, especiallywhen Lavender Hill’s gang situation haspicked up once again.

Evans felt that the progress of the commu-nity was being hampered by a lack of availa-ble facilities, due to the “progress being de-cided by an individual who has a problemwith us”.

Alphonso Slinger, CEO for the ChristianBenevolent Society, trains 45 unemployedmembers of the community as home-based

carers from 09:00 until 14:00 every Sunday atthe Sharedon Park Community RecreationCentre.

However, the project was turfed and need-ed to be placed on hold, as City officials feltthat a “different approach was needed to howthese community centre were to be utilised”.

“I am saddened that people are negatingwhatever good we are trying to do and I ap-peal for your assistance as I believe that if weare truly committed to helping the communi-ty, we would not be looking for excuses to sayno,” says Slinger.

Councillor Tandeka Gqada, Mayoral Com-mittee member for Community Services atthe City of Cape Town, explained that manyof the halls were closed due to construction.

She added that the City had embarked ona project to upgrade the ailing infrastructureand in order to effect this enhancement, the

buildings had to be re-built from scratch.“A contractor was appointed to complete

both Retreat and Steenberg halls and default-ed, which necessitated the appointment ofsubsequent contractors to rectify the badworkmanship and to complete the unfinishedproject,” says Gqada.

Both the Retreat and Steenberg facilitiesare due to be completed by the end of Junethis year.

All applications to use the halls are to bemade at the booking office at the Grassy ParkCivic Centre or contact (021) 706 8073.

Literacy projectgets top billingTHE largest South African propertyagent’s literacy project has won an inter-national accolade.

Growthpoint Properties has been awardedthe prestigious European Community Sup-port Award for their school literacy project,Growsmart. The award was made by the In-ternational Council of Shopping CentresFoundation (ICSC).

Growthpoint Assistant Regional Managerand Growsmart spokesperson, Jewel Harris, explains that the literacy project is in theform of an annual competition involvingschools throughout Cape Town.

Says Harris, “We are very proud that atotal of 168 schools with 62 000 pupils will becompeting in this year’s competition.”

The first round of this year’s competitionis expected to take place soon. The competi-tion will eventually culminate in the finalsin June.

Based on the concept of an American spell-ing bee, the competition aims to encouragelearners to read. Participating teams have toaccurately spell a word, or be eliminated. They also have to provide a definition of theword and correctly use it in a sentence.

There are three levels, with the grand fi-nale to be held on the United Nations’ Inter-national Literacy Day on 8 September.

Growthpoint is the largest listed SA prop-erty company, with an owner, manager anddeveloper focus. The company has property

assets valued at more than R50 billion inSouth Africa and Australia.

Through its social investment projects, the property agent promotes entrepreneuri-al development and education. These in-clude the Property Point enterprise develop-ment programme, a bursary programmeand the literacy project.

Harris accepted a commemorative awardand a $5 000 (about R45 000) cash incentivefor the Growsmart literacy initiative at anawards function held in Berlin, Germany.

Harris says they received the award in rec-ognition of “outstanding work being done byshopping centres internationally withintheir local community”.

“We are thrilled with this prestigiousaward and will be handing over the winningproceeds of $5 000 to Christel House SchoolOttery.”

Christel House Ottery, in Plantation Road,is Growthpoint’s registered charity partner.

She says the Growsmart literacy project“enjoys the full endorsement” of the WesternCape Education Department (WCED), withwhich the company has a close partnership.

Happy days at HillstarTHIS week, we introduce you toour Southern Spy columnist whowill take you on her daily andweekly rambles.

It was the day we all dread - dead-line day for my driving licence.Anxiety and mild panic set in.

My thoughts raced: What if theyfail me because I can’t read the lastline on the eye chart, what if myphotos are too large, but my fearswere groundless as I recently dis-covered on a trip to good old Hill-star in Ottery.

Things looked brighter as Icruised into a perfect parking spotunder trees in a heatwave.

The queue at the reception wasshort and I was given the greenform to fill in.

Yes, the queue was long, insidethe main hall, and it was sweatshopinside as there was no air con, butthe laid-back attitude soothed mynerves and we all lolled around be-ing cool.

Seats were few and hard. On eachside, my seat buddies were friendlyand we soon knew everything abouteach other’s lives. The bloke behindme was pumped about being a gameranger.

He told the crowd that he was ap-plying for a public drivers permit(PDP) and got a long, gory storyabout the horrible death a rhino en-dures, from a lady in a ‘Save theRhinos’ T-shirt. I felt a bit sick afterthat and tried to watch the televi-sion mounted on the wall.

Mcgyver was making a mini hot

air balloon out of anewspaper, beforecrashing a helicop-ter - gripping stuff.

The hours tickedby, as the one staffmember assigned toprocess the wholeroomful of people, stopped for lunch orsomething. And sowe sat and sat andsat.

Most people werejust renewing theirdriving licences, which takes an il-logical six weeks, and costs R140.

No one complained and we sweat-ed together in companionable har-mony. Then it was my turn andwith a ‘thumbs up’ to my new

friends I rushed intothe exam room wavingthe eye test from myoptician, in Plum-stead.

The lovely lady be-hind the computerscrutinised my Identi-ty Document, photosand green form andthen started writingintently on my forms. Itried small talk, but nojoy there. Well, imag-ine how hot and tired

she must have been, starting at 7:30and processing all those folks andsaying the same old things all day, every day.

The computer said ‘no’, as mythumbs refused to show up on the

screen, until I leaned my full weighton the infrared pad. At last, I wason my way to freedom and chargedoff to the cashier.

The sign behind him read: “Whoneeds exercise when you’ve spenttime stabbing the boss in the back, running out of time, leaping to con-clusions, fighting with the printerand jumping to conclusions.”

Thank heavens that’s over for an-other five years, when I will reallyhave serious worries about thestate of my failing eye sight!

Hillstar Traffic Services are openfrom 8am to 3pm to the public, phone 021 799 5100. To renew yourdriver’s licence take two recentphotos passport size, R140, and yourgreen ID book, plus the current li-cence.

TRADING that turbo injected sound fora quiet and passive drive might havebeen one of the hardest things to do, butin the end it worked out cheaper.

Driving a 2000 Golf GTi 20 Valve 2.0 Turbo,Powerflow exhaust system, tinted windows,18 inch GTi rims and a sound system power-ful enough to have assisted Apollo 13 in theirtakeoff, was like a dream.

Driving a plain white 2004 Opel Astra Clas-sic 16 Valve equipped with a 1.6 Eco-tech en-gine, comfortable seating, fast action win-dow winders and enough boot space to hosta party, is the reality.

As the petrol price increased, I found thelove and desire to drive my Golf decreasing, worryingly losing interest in driving “MyBaby” because it left a gaping hole in mypocket.

I quickly learnt that a “joyride” is not en-joyable when it cannot be afforded.

I quickly discovered this when I took overthe hot seat of my father’s Opel Astra, con-veniently light on fuel and heavenly on the

long road. The same thing could not be said about my

Golf, with that thunderous sound making itimpossible to strike up a conversation aswell as being a frequent guest at a petrol sta-tion.

This led to my decision to let go and choosea cost effective option in the form of the purewhite Opel Astra, which I am more thangrateful to have, even though I don’t own the“Silent Mobile”.

At times, the white Astra could be mistak-en for an undercover police car or govern-ment-owned vehicle, an assumption not tohave been made while driving my GTi.

There was certainly no debating the differ-ing speed of the cars, as my GTi was morethan capable of placing that Opel betweentwo slices of bread and having it for lunch. But, the significant difference between thetwo is when I reach the finish line and lookat the fuel gauge.

I have owned three cars in my lifetime, myGTi certainly takes top honours for looksand style, but as far as going to work andback is concerned, the award should go tothe Astra, without a doubt.

Up in the clouds with PajeroWHEELS24 LES STEPHENSON

HOW many of you go barrelling out of CapeTown on the N1 and as you pass through theglaciated depths of the Breede River Valley andthe town of Worcester, look up at the stark cir-cle of mountains and wonder, “What must itbe like up there?”

Which is why so many city-bound folk owna 4x4; they wanted to get up there to find out.

And a vehicle such as Mitsubishi’s 2012 Paje-ro Sport – especially given its low and very-low4x4 manual gear ranges – is ideal for the job.

“Up there” in the Stettynsberge behind theBrandvlei Dam is Klipbokkop, owned by theGroenewald family who bought the mountainfarm of the same name back in 1994 and builta cross between a retreat and a resort thatopened to the public in 1998. The Pajero hasbeen around for longer than that but I reckonI first drove one up the steep climb to the Kopfrom the Brandvlei Dam around the time theresort opened. It’s part-sponsored by the Good-year 4x4 Academy and accepts groups of notless than five 4x4vehicles for tours.Ona recentSaturday, the mountain trail was owned byMitsubishi and a small group of motoring writ-ers with their families. The trail is not difficult(especially in a Pajero 4x4), but more of a greatintroduction to the off-roading fraternity.

“At Klipbokkop,” says the family, “we striveto instil not only a greater appreciation for,and awareness of the environment, the fynbos, the plants and the animals, but also the respon-sibility of using vehicles in a sensitive eco-sys-tem.”

That’s what real 4x4-ers believe too.Klipbokkop is a magnificent and majestic re-

serve set on the slopes of the Stettyn moun-tains, part of the Cape Fold Belt which, thanksto continental drift and a few million years,

have close relations in Argentina. It’s a sanctuary of several endangered spe-

cies – including leopard, honey badger and por-cupine – and its mountain beauty and tranquil-lity are awesome. The Pajero Sport is prettyawesome, too. It’s been available in South Afri-ca since 2009 with a four-speed tiptronic autotransmission attached to its 3,2-litre turbodie-sel engine that delivers 120kW/343Nm but nowhave the latest five-speed manual gearboxeswith part-time all-wheel drive with low andvery low range, a centre differential and a reardifferential lock. The Cape Fold Mountainsmight be very old, but they’re no match for thePajero.

This Super Select 4x4 allows the driver to se-lect the 4H off-road setting from 2H tar-roadmode while driving below 100km/h – as has thePajero since its first models. The 4H settinggives a 33:67 power split between the front andrear wheels, respectively. It was upgraded in2012 with headlights tweaked and washers(mounted on the front bumper) added. The in-strument cluster has been revised, a USB portadded to the MP3-enabled six-speaker audiosystem and new leather upholstery installed.

Thewagoncan seat seven, thanks to two fold-ing seats in the boot, or all seats can be foldedto create a cavernous cargo volume.

The Pajero Sport comes with cruise control,a multifunction display (with compass and al-timeter) along with parking radar and powerwindows, six air bags, anti-lock brakes withelectronic pressure distribution and tractioncontrol.

It’s sold with a three-year or 100 000km war-ranty and a five-year or 100 000km service plan.Service intervals are 10 000km.

Ducati becomesAudi’s 12th brandWHEELS24

VOLKSWAGEN AG’s Audi divisionsaid it agreed to buy Italian motorcy-cle maker Ducati, adding a 12th brandto its portfolio of cars, trucks and ul-tra-luxury vehicles.

The 20-member supervisory board ofEurope’s largest automaker approved thepurchase on Wednesday April 17, 2012.Audi did not disclose details of the dealthough sources told Reuters that theagreed price was about 860 million euros(R8,9-billion).

Ducati, which has won 13 rider’s Super-bike World championships since 1988,will extend Audi’s long-standing rivalrywith BMW in superbikes. Rupert Stadler,Audi’s chief executive says, “As a sporty, global, premium brand, Ducati is an ex-cellent fit for Audi.”

Audi outsold Daimler’s Mercedes-Benzin 2011 and has vowed to surpass BMWfor the top spot in luxury car sales thisdecade.

Audi says it aims to complete the pur-

chase of Ducati from Italy’s Investindus-trial as quickly as possible once it has re-ceived approval by the relevant regula-tors.

Analysts have questioned the Ducatipurchase, saying the move bears no eco-nomic or industrial logic and solely re-flects Volkswagen chairman FerdinandPiech’s passion for the Italian company’sexpertise ondesignand light engines. Ste-fanBratzel, director of theCentre ofAuto-motive at the University of Applied Sci-ences in Bergisch-Gladbach, says, “I can’tthink of a concrete reason for Audi towarrant a business case for buying Duca-ti.

“Ducati doesn’t enhance Audi’s busi-ness model in any way, it’s just a trophyin the wall cabinet.”

Ducati makes about 40 000 two-wheel-ers a year across its range of cruiser, su-permoto, adventure, naked and super-bikes that include the muscular Diaveland dual sport Hypermotard.

By comparison, industry leader Hondasold more than 16 million motorcycles in2011.

Electric car plan short circuitsWHEELS24

IT was billed as South Africa’s electric carhope but has Optimal Energy’s Joule fizzledout?

The Business Day reported on Thursdaythat the Joule, developed and engineered byCape Town-based Optimal Energy, has beenshelved. The automaker’s CEO, Kobus Meir-ing, said the company would instead focus onthe development of an electric bus. Meiringtold Business Day that the Joule project had,to date, cost R300m – funding which were pro-

vided by the Industrial Development Corpora-tion (IDC) and the Department of Science andTechnology. The IDC in 2011 advised OptimalEnergy to commercialise the Joule and securea partnership with an automotive manufac-turer to retain the agency’s funding.

Meiring says discussions with municipali-ties regarding the purchasing of electric busesby municipalities for public transport hadbeen “positive”. The Joule was initially metwith great acclaim by the automotive worldand even enjoyed a star debut at the 2010 Gene-va auto show.

BMW drivers ‘most likely to cheat’WHEELS24

IT’S not enough that BMW drivers carrythe (admittedly deserved) stigma of “notusing indicators”. Now owners of theGerman automaker’s rides have beencalled out as “most likely to cheat”.

That’s according to an online dating site,

Illicit Encounters. In a survey it claims had 640 000 respond-

ents, members voted owners of the Bavari-an brand as most likely to have an extra-marital affair.

The survey found that 19,21% of malemembers who admitted to being unfaithfulwere BMW owners.

Audi came in second as the choice of car

for cheating partners with 8,79%, followedby Mercedes (8,23%), Jaguar (6,59%) andLand Rover (4,94%).

Illicit Encounters spokesperson RosieFreeman-Jones says, “There’s an intrinsiclink between success and cheating. Success-ful people are often risk-takers, andhavegotto where they are by setting their standardshigh.

“However, these people are also less like-ly to settle for unsatisfying relationships ormonotony,” she said.

Cheating female partners also preferredBMWs with a score of 11,16%.

According to the survey, car owners leastlikely to cheat on their partners are thosewho drive Renaults (0,28%), Fiats andChryslers (0,55% each).

Permaculture crop couldearn schools R25 000TAURIQ HASSEN

A HEALTHY permaculture food crop could earnyour school R25 000 as well as benefit your men-tal and physical health.

The National 2012 EduPlant Schools Competition, developed and coordinated by Food & Trees for Afri-ca, wants to reward schools growing their own per-maculture gardens.

The programme will teach educators, learners andcommunities how to sustainably grow their ownfood, while reaping the benefits of a healthy and moreecologically-conscious lifestyle.

About 500 schools are expected to take part in thisyear’s battle of the food gardens, with 60 schools rep-resenting all nine provinces at the finals in October.Making the finals alone is anadded incentive, as eachfinalist receives R1 500, along with a trip to theawards gala at the Bosco Centre in Johannesburg lat-er this year.

Besides a two-week permaculture design course,cash prizes range from R5 000 upwards.

EduPlant Programme Manager Joanne Carty wasexcited at the prospect of schools displaying the hard

work and dedication they put into their gardening.“We are so proud of the permaculture gardening

work in schools across the country. Many educators, learners and local community members have attend-ed the EduPlant workshops and are now able to growtheir own sustainable food gardens,” says Carty. “Weintend to reward these efforts with the national Edu-Plant competition and hope to encourage otherschools to join in the fight against food insecurity inSouth Africa.”

Former winner, Magudu Primary School in Mpu-malanga, won in all categories in the EduPlant com-petition. In addition to vegetables, the school hassince started their own orchards, a banana planta-tion, as well as flowers and herbs.

They have a nursery, seven water tanks, a boreholeand greenhouse. A citrus grove is in the pipeline.

They have embarked on a project of their own bydonating 30 trees to neighbouring schools to get themon board.

Entries to the EduPlant competition closes on 28May and 60 finalists will be announced on Saturday1 September. Schools interested in entering thisyear’s competition or to find out more contact Cartyat Food & Trees for Africa on [email protected].

Let the civic become the publicTHE Retreat Steenberg Civic Association hasthe vision of becoming the civic. The word “civ-ic” refers to the public. The public, in this con-text, is the residents of Retreat Steenberg. TheRetreat Steenberg Civic Association visualisesan association that is driven by the people of Re-treat Steenberg.

However, to realise this vision, the followingis necessary. Firstly, residents must become ac-tively involved in the civic. This is done throughmembership. Membership to the Retreat Steen-berg Civic Association is open to all residentsof Retreat Steenberg irrespective of class, socioeconomic status, genderandage.Application formembership is on a prescribed form and thereis a nominal annual membership fee. The fee ismerely for administrative purposes.

Secondly, members of the civic, as a collective, should in true democratic fashion determineand drive the local agenda, be it safety and secu-rity, socio-economic development, health or theenvironment. This will ensure that the needs ofthe people reach the public agenda.

Thirdly, membersmust participate in the elec-tions of the civic leadership. Civic Associationsrepresent the local community. It is thereforeimperative that themajority of residents partici-pate in the elections of civic leaders and by doingso, hold them accountable to the community. The constitution of the Retreat Steenberg CivicAssociation guarantees every member the rightto vote in elections and/or to stand for election.

Having said that, it is hereby announced, thatelections for the new Executive Committee ofthe Retreat Steenberg Civic Association willtake place on 28 June 2012. Nomination for can-didates for election to the Executive Committeecloses on 14 June 2012. Only members of the Re-treat Steenberg Civic Association are allowed tovote or to stand for elections. DEMOCRACY in South Africa has come ofage. Eighteen years ago, all South Africansvoted in the country’s first democratic elec-tions.

Like a pregnant mother expecting her firstchild, it was the hope of a new dawn.

Today, this country has been labelled a de-veloping nation. In itself, this is not a badthing. It simply means South Africa, like Bra-zil, straddles two worlds. It is not quite a firstworld, because it is hampered by so manythird world problems.

It is an indictment of the slow march oftime, however, as 18 years seems simply notenough time to fix all apartheid’s wrongs.

Millions of South Africans face a dailygrind of abject poverty, humiliation by hun-ger, a job market that is unable to providework for a people hamstrung by poor or noeducation, and a nation often blamed for anunwillingness to join the labour force.

Thousands throng to urban centres in thehope of obtaining that brighter future, as alast gasp of rhetorical promises of politicians.

Is there light at the end of this tunnel? DAleader Helen Zille has called Eastern Capelearners flocking to this province for a bettereducation ‘refugees’.

Her apology notwithstanding, the tradi-tional weapon of politicians – the blame game– helps no-one.

Our nation is peopled by inventive and in-telligent citizens with a ‘can-do’ attitude. It isthis reality that continues to make South Af-ricans ever popular with the overseas corpo-rate environment.

The unashamed siphoning of our country’sintelligentsia – across all spheres of qualifica-tions – is a shameful display of this govern-ment’s failure to stem the brain drain.

When whichever government is in powereventually wakes up to this reality, who thenwill there be to switch off the lights? Thiscountry cannot wait another 18 years to re-build a nation from the empty reserves leftby the apartheid regime.

Free, at last?

LIAM MOSES

TENSIONS between schools andrugby clubs in the southern sub-urbs have spilled out into theopen following rumours of play-er poaching and a disregard forthe rules of the Western Prov-ince Rugby Football Union(WPRFU).

The People’s Post have been madeaware that several schools in thesouthern suburbs and other areasof Cape Town are dismayed thatsome of their pupils have chosen toplay junior rugby at clubs insteadof at the school.

This is happening despite a 2006WPRFU ruling which states thatpupils may only play for junior clubrugby teams if the school they at-tend does not offer rugby on a Satur-day morning.

One of the schools which has re-portedly been the hardest hit by theplayer drain is Islamia College, in

Lansdowne Road, RondeboschEast.

According to school principalShaheem Galant, the school has re-cently experienced a large drop inthe amount of students participat-ing in rugby.

“We originally had four fullteams and those teams have beendiluted to only about two teams nowbecause of the procurement of play-ers by clubs outside of the school,”says Galant.

“This is contrary to the schoolsact and to what the sports ministrywants. Its requires that school levelsport must be advocated but we arefinding it difficult because learnersare finding it more interesting toplay for clubs, for whatever reason, instead of the school.”

Galant added that the school hadrecently made a major financial in-vestment into rugby and the loss ofplayers was harming the school andinhibiting the achievement ofsporting targets the school had set

for itself.“We want to reach a point of ex-

cellence in sport but can’t seem toget there because of these stum-bling blocks,” he says.

“It’s hurting the school. We aresitting with a stock room full of jer-seys. We have procured the MatiesAcademy to train our players andits costing us a lot of money. Thecoaches come but there are nolearners to train.”

According to Galant, the schoolhas also experienced a similar situ-ation with its cycling team.

The People’s Post has been in-formed that many of the former Is-lamia rugby players have joined ei-ther SK Walmers, Violets or Prim-rose, but this could not be verified.

Jowa Abrahams, president ofPrimrose Rugby Club, responded tothe allegations by saying thatschools needed to sort out the issuewith the players and their parentsand not to blame Primrose.

“The bottom line is that it’s the

choice of the parents and theschools must sort it out with theparents,” Abrahams says.

“We don’t force the children tocome to us. Not to be boastful, wehave a very good coaching struc-ture at school level from under sev-en all the way to under 19.

“You want to encourage schoolsrugby, but youth rugby is also im-portant because many schools don’thave facilities or teachers to coachand they (the players) come to us.”

Theo Kleynhans, the generalmanager for youth rugby at theWPRFU, says that the 2006 rule wasinstituted in order to help strength-en the relationship between clubsand schools, as part of a South Afri-can Rugby Union (SARU) project.

“You take six (or) seven playersout of a school team to play in a clubandyouweaken the school. The restof the people in the school can’t playbecause there are not enough ofthem, they have been siphoned off.The clubs are actually there to ac-

commodate players who cannotplay rugby at the school.”

Galant claims that Kleynhanshas assured him that the WPRFUwill approach the clubs and find asolution to the problem by Tuesday1 May.

Danny Jones, President of theWestern Province Schools Rugby, the administrative body for youthrugby in the province, insists thatthe problem is not a major issue.

However, Jones did say that theclubs must respect the school’sright to have first choice to all oftheir rugby playing pupils.

“I think some people want to playfor a club because the club is play-ing at a higher level than the schoolbut that doesn’t give the club a rightto use the school’s players,” saysJones.

“It mustn’t become an ‘us orthem’ situation. It must be a collec-tivewhere everyonegains out of thefact that we are providing sport toour pupils.”

LIAM MOSES

A SOUTHERN SUBURBS archer willdiscover today whether the South Afri-can Sport Confederation and OlympicCommittee (SASCOC) has helped makeherdreamofcompetingat theOlympicsa reality or shattered any hope of itcoming true.

Muizenberg resident Karen Hultzer (46)has only been involved in archery foraround six and a half years, but she has al-ready climbed to the pinnacle of the sport, despite several challenges.

Last month, on Friday 16 March, SouthAfrica’s number one ranked archer tookanother giant leap in her progress throughthe ranks of the sport by claiming thirdplace at the African Archery Champion-ships in Rabat, Morocco, and thereby qual-ifying for the London Olympic Games.

However, meeting the International Ol-ympic Committee’s qualification standardmay not be enough to see her travel to theUnited Kingdom this year, as SASCOCmust now decide whether to allow her tojoin team South Africa.

Hultzerhas chosen not to get her hopesup in order to guard against disappoint-ment.

“I don’t know, it’s very difficult (to saywhether SASCOC will allow me to go). Onewants to be optimistic but you also don’twant to set yourself up for a fall,” she says.

“They’re going to decide on the 24th.There are other athletes that are in thesame position as well.”

Hultzer added that competing in the Ol-

ympics would be almost like a “fairytale”.“I think it’s an extraordinary event. One

of those dreams that everybody has and sofew people actually get to. To be one ofthose people who actually go would bequite extraordinary, a fairytale almost.”

Hultzer reaffirmed her status as SouthAfrica’s best female archer earlier thismonth when she claimed two gold medalsat the South African Championships inGrahamstown from Tuesday 10 to Satur-day 14 April.

Another local archer, Nathan Kunz, alsoperformed well at the championships andclaimed two silver medals. Kunz, a 16-year-old False Bay college student, said he felt“absolutely wonderful” after winning themedals

The young Fish Hoek resident says heloves archery because of the thrill he getsevery time the arrow leaves his bow.

“It’s just the sense that I get from it.When the arrow is released there’s nothingI can do if the wind is blowing. I just pointthe arrow and see where it lands,” he says.

“It’s a pleasurable feeling. The feelingthat I’ve done what I can and now let’s seehow it goes and what the end result is.”

The two silver medals Kunz won at thenational championships is an improve-ment on his performance at the same eventlast year where he netted two bronze med-als.

Kunz, who has only been involved witharchery for two years, added that hisdream was to one day compete in the Olym-pics.

Both Hultzer and Kunz train at the Pro-tea Sports Club in Main Road, Retreat.
