PHOTO: CHEVON BOOYSEN LAVENDER HILL ‘No shooting’ claim CHEVON BOOYSEN @ChevonBooysen “L avender Hill has not had any shoot- ings in two years.” These words from Colonel Her- man Seals acting station commander at Steenberg Police Station had the sector four community in uproar at a recent meeting held in Lavender Hill. According to Seals, the Lavender Hill pre- cinct “did not have a worrying amount of shootings for two years”. “The precinct has, however, since the be- ginning of this year had a flare of gang vio- lence. This situation is being monitored,” Seals said. The sector four residents could not con- tain themselves as they gasped in disbelief and listened to Seals’ feedback. At the meeting, which was held on Thurs- day 19 February at the Community Faith Church, residents rocked up in their droves to make their voices heard about the crime concerns in their sector. Sector manager Warrant Officer André Petersen, ward councillors Shanen Rossouw and Melanie Petersen attended the meeting to listen to the plights of the community. At the meeting, residents’ tempers flared as they aired their crime concerns. One resident remarked that it was “unbe- lievable” when Seals said there were no shooting incidents for two years. Petersen also reported back to the commu- nity on the crime statistics for the area over the previous week. “Our concern at the moment is our mur- der rate that has gone up by 200% during this one week. Our murders and attempted mur- ders are the most commonly reported crimes during this time,” Petersen said. He added that domestic violence and as- saults with intent to do grievous bodily harm also increased. And there has been a frequency of house break-ins, theft of and theft out of motor vehicles. “Crime has been on the increase in the ar- ea and we need our residents to take a stand against crime. We want our residents to re- port the crimes in their area so more convic- tions can be made,” Petersen implored. During the meeting residents were given the opportunity to pose questions to police. A Drury Court resident, who did not want to be named out of fear of victimisation, says they fear for their lives every day due to the gang shootings in the area. Added to this, the resident says, police are not helping with their plight at all when they call them to crime scenes. “Two weeks ago we had a shooting in the court where an innocent young man was shot and killed. He was shot 11 times in his face. Police were on scene and they did abso- lutely nothing. This is unacceptable,” said the infuriated resident. Another resident said she fears for the lives of children in the area as they are sub- jected to daily shootings outside school premises. “These children walk home in fear every day. In a passageway between Levana and Hillwood Primary schools, people are being robbed. We call the police but they do not do anything,” she says. Out of despair the resident said she has on occasion threatened known gangsters in the area if they do not stop harassing the com- munity. “I will take the law into my own hands because our police are incompetent. I told them that I would throw boiling water at them if they ever touched my children. As a community we are hopeless and want the police to help us,” she says. Rossouw said she was “afraid” to be at the meeting. “It scares me that I was invited to a sector meeting. People, we need to take responsibil- ity of our communities and fight back. I urge you all to take the initiative to start street committees and tackle the root of the prob- lem,” she said. Residents said they were not happy with Rossouw’s suggestion. “Every year we have the same meetings and we hear the same things over and over. Our councillors do not want to help us. They come to meetings and stay a few minutes be- fore they run off again. We need them to spend time with us so they can understand what our concerns are,” she said. Seals encouraged residents at the end of the meeting to come forward with informa- tion about shootings and gang violence in the area. V What are your thoughts? You’re pregnant. Formanywomen thesetwo words could send shock wavesthroughout their bodies.

While somemay be happy and ready to be-come a mom, others may feel anxious andworried. With a flurry of emotions – wheth-er you are happy or sad, excited or anxious– all pregnant women will have to figure outa birth plan. But as medical costs continue to rise,

many women are exploring their options in-cluding having their babies at home.Later this week a group of expecting

moms, coupledwithmidwives, birth experts

and partners will gather in Muizenberg todiscuss issues around home birthing. Theinformal eventwill be hosted byHomeBirthSouth Africa in Muizenberg.

Early beginningsIn 2010, while working as doulas Lana Pe-

tersen and Ruth Ehrhardt became frustrat-ed with not being able to provide informa-tion on home births to expecting moms.A doula is a woman who offers continual

emotional and physical support to a labou-ring woman (and her partner).Together they decided to start hosting

home birth gatherings where doulas, mid-wives and interested parties sat togetherand shared their stories. Home Birth SouthAfricawas formed and awebsite with every-thing expecting parents need to know creat-ed. Here women share their stories and pho-tographs of home birth.

MisconceptionsSafety, cleanliness and complications are

some of themain issues faced byHomeBirthSouth Africa.Petersen explains despite a long history of

home births across the world, with modern-day medical procedures, many still per-ceived giving birth to be a medical proce-dure. She says birth is a natural physiologi-cal process and only requires medicalintervention when there are complications.Petersen explains in preparation for a

home birth, the first step is for the motherto pick a caregiver. “The midwife will thenensure the mother visits the hospital to en-sure that a natural home birth is safe andthere are no complications.”Throughout the pregnancy, the caregiver

conducts regular check-ups and helps pre-pare women accordingly. “Midwives arehighly skilled and trained. They also workwithback-uphospitals so in the case of emer-gency they are equipped to assist.”

ChoicePetersen says the gatherings are held to

help expecting parents explore their op-tions. She explains while they do not try andconvince moms to take the home birth op-tion, they aim to provide all the necessaryinformation to ensureparents choose abirthplan that suits them.“The one advantage is that because it’s

your home, you are not bound by hospitalprotocols. Here themom can decide who shewants to have around her and she is not sur-rounded by strangers,” she adds. The gathering will take place on Sunday

1 March at 18 Axminster Road, Muizenbergfrom 14:00 to 16:00. The gathering is aimedat those who have given birth at home, forthose who have wanted home births, forthose who are planning a home birth or arethinking about it or are just curious. It is al-so for those whose home births did not goas they had wished. Midwives and doulasare also welcome. Entry is R60 per personor R100 for two people.V For more information visit www.homebirth.org.za orcall Ruth on 078 557 9070 or email [email protected] or call Lana on 073 514 9754 or email [email protected].

Smart park for hot daysCHEVON BOOYSEN

@ChevonBooysen

More fun in the sun can be expectedwith the development of anewrecrea-tion facility at the Seawinds Sports

Complex in coming months. If all goes to plan, the communitywill soon

be the recipient of a spray park after a smartpark – or cluster of amenities – is built.Mayoral Committee Member for Commu-

nity Services and Special Projects BelindaWalker says the vision for the sports com-plex is to create a family recreation hubwhich will cater for all ages and interests.“We want a family recreation hub with a

host of different sport and recreational facil-ities. We want this to be an inclusive, safeand fun space for all to enjoy – from toddlersto seniors,” Walker says. The proposed recreational facility will be

built at the existing sportsfield in an attemptto cluster amenities in the community.“The clustering of community facilities

encourages greater use of these amenities, which results in better surveillance and con-sequently a safer environment. The cluster-ing of facilities will help to mitigate vandal-ism which is rife across the city,” she says.Walker says the first phase of develop-

ment at the sports complex will include asmart park and a full-size artificial soccerfield.“A budget has been identified for these fa-

cilities. The development of a spray parkwithin this complex will depend on futurebudget provision,” Walker explains.According to Walker, the smart park pro-

gramme has been a success in Blikkiesdorpand Gugulethu where the first two parkswere opened last year.

Walker explains the spray parks arewaterspray features which were introduced dueto the limited space available for recreation-al facilities.“Water-wise spray parks have timed and

interactive water spray features, includingabove-ground structures like spray can-nons, spray loops and dunking buckets, aswell as various ground sprayers. While the concept has been used globally

for decades, these facilities are a first for theprovince,” she says.Walker says theCity ofCapeTown’s sport,

recreation and amenities department cameup with the innovative solution due to thelimited space for recreational use.“The development of spray parks is part

of our redress programme to restore past im-balances and provide quality recreationalfacilities for communities who were previ-ously denied them.”She explains the spray park is a water-

play area which consists of a series of sprayfeatures or structures that create a play en-vironment by means of different spray noz-zles and interactive collecting and dumpingfeatures.“Water is recirculated and treated

through a process similar to that of a swim-ming pool reticulation system. Water is ascarce resource and, unlike swimmingpools, the spray parks use minimal water, which is testimony to this administration’scommitment to the long-term approach tosustainability best practice,” she further ex-plains.To date the City has built six spray parks.“These are situated in Valhalla Park,

Khayelitsha, Scottsville, Ocean View andNyanga. The spray park in Dunoon is in theearly stages of construction,” Walker says.

Seawinds Sports Complex will be the re-cipients of the smart park to cater for bothformal and informal sport and recreationalfacilities. “The existing sports complex atSeawinds has been identified as an idealsite for development. This developmentaligns with the City’s vision to encourageboth active and passive forms of recreationthat cater for the needs of the communityand will encourage healthy and activelifestyles.”Walker adds there are no fees payable at

the spray parks.V What are your thoughts? Starting with the word“Post”, SMS your views to 32516. SMSes cost R1.

New board to take responsibilityCHEVON BOOYSEN

@ChevonBooysen

A new board was recently elected at theSharedon Park Ratepayers’ Associa-tion’s annual meeting.

The new team’s members, elected onThursday 19 February, are ready to tackletheir duties as they head into the new yearafter safety issues were discussed.

Ward councillor Marita Petersen waspresent at themeeting as a presiding officerand said she is positive the new board willbe able to make the necessary changes ifthey remain focused.

“Youneed to set a tone for your communi-ty. Sharedon Park ratepayers have alwaysbeen a ‘no-nonsense’ community and theywould tackle issues head on. This mighthave been diluted and lost in recent years,

but it is time to take charge of your commu-nity again,” Petersen said, encouraging thegroup.

She added that the new board should seta trend in their community and enforcewhat it is theywanthappening in their com-munity.

Elected chairperson Eric Bailey says heis ready to tackle his job with vigour.

“Weknow that crimehas been anongoingissue in the area but with our five-pointsafety plan we hope to eradicate these is-sues as soon as possible. We can only do itif the community works together,” Baileysaid.

Part of the safety plan for the area is tointroduce CCTV cameras to the area wheremovement can be monitored and the clo-sure of laneswhich has been prone to crimi-nal activity.

Thanks for excellent public serviceI am writing with great happiness andappreciation for the wonderful publicservice which a few City traffic officersand members of the Flying Squadperformed on Thursday 29 January.

I was attending a church service inMitchell’s Plain about 21:00 when Ireceived a call that my daughter’s carbroke down on the notorious R300.

One cannot help but think of therecent dangerous incidents, wheremotorists were attacked while being onthis national road.

It is actually a sad state of affairs thatthis beautiful piece of road has becomeso dangerous for motorists. We dependon this road to earn our bread.

My wife logged a call with the emer-gency services, and I am happy to reportthat the City of Cape Town’s trafficservices and the flying squad respondedalmost immediately. My family and Iwere happy for this good public servicerendered, as our daughter was alone –far from where we were at that time. Iam aware this is their job and what they

are trained to do.As a fellow public servant I have great

appreciation for the men and women inblue who sometimes place themselves atrisk to come to the aid of others in need.

There may be many who do notappreciate the emergency services, particularly the police and law enforce-ment fraternity, but for me and myfamily, we are very appreciative of thiskind deed they performed for our daugh-ter.

I am aware we cannot reward them fordoing their duty, but we want to recog-nise them for the great selfless work theydo, while serving others in the field.

As a taxpayer, it makes me proud tosee that our taxes are being put to gooduse, when the emergency servicesrespond to even minor requests from thepublic.

I want to acknowledge a few officers inparticular who stayed with my daughteruntil the towing company arrived totransport her home. Her safety was ourmain concern and that was all that

mattered to us.Our daughter sometimes has to work

late and we feel much more relaxed nowthat we know there are traffic officersand police officers patrolling the R300and can respond in cases of emergency.

As a family we want to recogniseSergeant Clifton Botha, Constable Chris-topher Ludick, Constable Leon April,Traffic Officer Lorenzo Lackay andTraffic Officer Glen Oppel.

These officers also ensured that thetraffic flow was unhindered and safe forall when the car was recovered by thebreakdown truck.

The whole activity was a successbecause of their help.

Thank you once again and keep up thegood work. You make us proud to beSouth Africans.

We wish these officers well in theirfuture career development within in theSA public service.

What a heavy loadI read your article on heavy school bagsfor primary school children and I couldnot agree more with C Thomas (People’sPost, 17 February). My son is in Grade 7this year and his bag has never beeneasy to carry since they started receivingthe new work books. I have contacted theschool and requested they keep the booksat school since every class has a cup-board. The books are marked and thecupboards can be locked, so what is theproblem? This was a dead end request.

We started packing his books accordingto his daily roster to try and lessen theload, which was also a waste of time.

The teachers force the children to carryall their books to school, because theyswop and change lesson plans wheneverthey feel like it. They do not care aboutthe heavy loads our children have tocarry and the amount of work they haveto do as long as their work is done.

C JULIUS

Last week a Cape Town musician had his sax-ophone stolen.

But in just a few days, the beloved instru-ment was safely returned.

After discovering that his sax had been stolenfrom his car, Nick Becker took to Facebook.

He urged people to be on the lookout for theinstrument which had quite literally taken himacross the world.

His post, along with his offer of a substantialreward, went viral and within four days anothermusician called him to say he’d found it.

Despite Nick’s insistence, he wasn’t preparedto take the reward.

Jai Reddy came across someone trying to sellthe saxophone in the CBD and recognised it fromNick’s Facebook post.

He bought it, and then gave Nick a call.Theft is in some sense a part of life for many

South Africans. But what makes this story so heartwarming

is the fact that the Cape Town music fraternity, along with non-musical folk, pulled together toget this man’s sax back.

Everybody involved in the search simply hadto click “share”.

Just one click made the world of difference inmaking sure someone would recognise the sto-len instrument.

Apart from the lesson around the power of Fa-cebook, the bigger lesson here is the power ofcommunity and what we can do if we all contrib-ute just a little bit.

As American historian and social activistHoward Zinn once said: “Small acts, when multi-plied by millions of people, can transform theworld.”

HERITAGE

Going backin timeNICOLE MCCAIN

@nickymccain

Inbetween the grains of history, capturedin rock and sand, the next generation isbuilding their future. The Chavonnes Battery Museum is train-

ing young students from disadvantagedcommunities, giving them the skills to workin the tourism industry.

The V&A Waterfront Historical WalkingTour takes visitors back to a time of exilesand explorers, in the race to commercialisethe seas and own the rights to exotic im-ports.

DefensiveThe battery, a fort to defend the bay from

attack, was built almost half a century afterthe Castle of Good Hope.

It boasted numerous canons, which couldfire a range of artillery, and commanded aposition that made it impossible for shipsto pass unnoticed.

But in 1860, when construction of the Al-fred Basin began, part of the battery – in-cluding the left side-wall – was totally de-molished and the stone re-used in construct-ing the new docks.

The rest vanished beneath warehousesand later a fish-processing factory.

In 2000, during construction of a new headoffice for the Board of Executors in theClock Tower Precinct of the V&A Water-front, the remains of the battery werefound.

Today, what is left of the walls have beencarefully preserved inside and outside themuseum.

Explaining the first centuries of the Capehas seen tour guides incorporating historyfrom their own cultures, which is deliveredin their native tongue.

Giving backAnd making sure this history is passed

forward, the museum takes in youth, in-terns and graduates in tourism and eventmanagement for a six-month training pro-gramme offering them valuable work expe-rience with the aim of facilitating place-ment of them in the industry, explains

Chavonnes Battery Museum business exec-utive Dale Dodgen.

“Our entire purpose is to serve the com-munity by providing work experience foryouth. All our income is invested in youthdevelopment, not just a portion of it,” shesays

Some of the school visits are funded to en-sure pupils from previously disadvantagedcommunities are able to visit the museumand see people from their own communitiesactively involved in running the museumand tour guiding, Dodgen says.

“We hope this will be an inspiration forthem and their future. Pupils also get to ex-perience the history of Cape Town in theirown language,” she says.

Heritage siteThe museum is a heritage site and de-

tailed models depict Cape Town and the bat-tery in its heyday.

Visitors can explore the 17th and 18th cen-tury Cape Town and a selection of muzzle-loading cannon, surrounded by the sandthat would have covered the shore 300 yearsago.

It’s a tangible connection to our history, according to Dodgen.

“It gives me shivers ... 300 years ago, someone was standing here. Who werethey? What happened to them?” she says.

But bringing local feet through the doorremains a huge challenge, Dodgen says.

“Our biggest challenge is to get more localvisitors to the museum and people to hosttheir events here,” she says.

“Museums are evolving to be spaceswhere people can engage with and influencethe content. Our partnership with Zeitz Mu-seum of Contemporary African Art andhosting Art exhibitions, allows visitors whowould not traditionally go to an art gallery, the opportunity to experience art,” shesays.

The museum tells the stories of the Cape’speople and events, fostering a new genera-tion of storytellers, entrepreneurs, youthdevelopment and job creation, says Dodgen.V For more information, contact Chavonnes BatteryMuseum on 021 416 6230 or visit www.chavonnes-battery.co.za.

STAR STRUCK VOICE SEARCH

Debut album for Lee HeynesLOUISA STEYL

@LouNotes

Star Struck Voice Search winner Leanne“Lee” Heynes is preparing to launchher debut album.

The album, along with a music video andphoto shoot, are among some of the prizesshe won in the competition last year.

Lee, as she is known on-stage, heard aboutthe competition from a family friend whopretty much forced her to enter the three-month contest.

“It developed me as an artist overall,” Leesays of the Star Struck Voice Search.

The competition sees performers comple-te a series of challenges that test not onlytheir voices, but also their music businessacumen, by way of a series of tasks, givingthem a foundation to be able to take on themusic industry as an independent artist.

Although the competition took her out ofher comfort zone, Lee says she took the tasksseriously.

“I exceeded my limits. It made me dothings I never thought I was capable of.”

Organiser of the competition, Brilynn vanRooyen, from Crazy World Productions saysartists are also assigned songs that theywouldn’t usually take on to sing in StarStruck’s elimination rounds to build theirconfidence and broaden their repertoire.

Being able to record her own original mu-sic is a huge highlight for Lee on her musicaljourney so far.“I’ve never been in studio be-fore,” she says and describes the recordingof her upcoming album In my world, as a“fun experience”.BrilynnhelpedLee formu-late her ideas into songs and although thealbum focuses on love, it has an “R’nB andhip-hop feel”.

There’s even a house track called Walkaway on the album. “It’s a different style ofsinging,” Lee says of the track, adding thatthe soul elements she added helped bring outthe quality of her voice. In my world was recorded at Crazy World

Productions and Lee says it’s got an interna-tional sound.Lee and Brilynn are busy sam-pling the first three tracks from the album

to radio stations and are planning an officialalbum release in April.

But before that, Lee will be acting as anambassador and mentor for the Star StruckVoice Search 2015 which starts at Las VegasLounge in Mitchell’s Plain on Saturday 28February.

Lee encourages all local singers to enter.“If you are gifted with a talent, why keep itto yourself?”

She’s looking forward to being on theother side of the judging table and says she’slooking for competitors with strong perso-nalities who aren’t easily intimidated.

“The competition is going to be tough.”Lee believes the competition, which is

open to rappers and singers, is also a greatway to network with other artists, openingthe doors for future collaborations.

Auditions for Star Struck Voice Search2015 take place from 09:00 to 17:00 on Satur-day 28 February.

Contestantswhomake it through theaudi-tions will go on to compete in weekly roundsfor a chance to win the main prize of aR300 000 record and endorsement deal.

OPEL

It’s all about the engineLES STEPHENSON

If any car brands have really demonstratedthe development of the small family carover the past 30 years, it’s those that have

been bold enough in the past to fit their prod-ucts with a three-cylinder engine.

Doing so in a country for so long obsessedwith the letter V and the numbers six andeight must have been a worrying decisionfor vehicle distributors; the most recent be-ing Opel – part of the General Motors stable– that introduced the one-litre, three-cylin-der, fifth-generation, five-door Corsa hatch-back last week.

Six-speed boxThe same turbocharged ecoFLEX (Opel’s

capitals) engine powers the recentlylaunched Opel Adam. A 1.4-litre version willarrive later in 2015 with an auto box and thecars will be available in showrooms inMarch. Prices are remarkably close to thoseof the previous model with three trim levelsoffered: Cosmo, Enjoy, and Essentia ofwhich some require “option packages” tobring them to the level of competitors’ stan-dard stock.

The mini-mill in this new B-segment Cor-sa, which was launched internationally onlyfour months earlier in Paris, makes 85kWfrom 5-6000rpm and 170Nm from 1800-4500rpm – the benefit coming, of course, from a turbocharger – and drives through avery slick and sweet six-speed manual gear-box.

Pillar visionThe two cars I drove did, however, have

their niggles; the first made a sort of death-rattle noise as the range-standard stop/start

fuel-saver cut in and out at junctions (I wastold of at least one more that did the same),the second developed a most annoying vibra-tion noise from the facia assembly at cruisespeeds and the hazard-lights button becamestuck in its housing.

Another dislike: the two short and thickpillars, each pair forming the base of thewindscreen frame and severely restrictingvision on narrow mountain roads.

Band-aids under the bonnetWide and horizontally-split tail lights, the

automaker says, help to create another illu-sion of extra width and incorporate the fron-tal ‘wing’ motif when illuminated.

Opel has chosen a chronograph style forthe instrumentation – very neat – with sup-plementary controls on the steering-wheel;no cruise control, though, which I see as afailing. There’s also no ‘tween-seats liddedbox (something I always find useful forhouse keys, cell-phone) but plenty of cup/bottle holders.

Opel makes much in its media release ofaerodynamics and sealing on the B pillar;

there are also lots of little pieces fitted Band-aids under the bonnet, one stiff piece ofwhich could have been responsible for thesecond car’s unpleasant noise – rather likeblowing over a blade of grass stretched be-tween your thumbs.

The base model has 15” wheels and 215-profile tyres.

Award-winning infotainmentAll new Corsas, Opel says, “have a raft of

standard safety equipment as well, ensuringnothing is left to chance”. These includeABS with EBD and BAS, adaptive brakelights and automatic hazard lights, discbrakes all-round, the latest in electronic sta-bility control, six crash bags, tyre-pressuremonitors, a pedal release system, IsoFixchild seat anchor points, pre-tensioned seatbelts, a seat belt reminder and an anti-theftalarm and immobiliser.

And for those who failed clutch control,hill-start assistance.

While the one-litre engine might be revo-lutionary, so is Opel’s award-winning Intel-liLink infotainment system, which bringsthe connected world of smartphones andapps into the car. It is available as an optionon Enjoy and Essentia models, and standardon Cosmo.

IntelliLink is fully compatible with the lat-est Android and Apple iOS-based smart-phones.

The model range1.0T Essentia (R185 500)1.0T Enjoy (R216 200)1.0T Cosmo (R236 300)All new Opel Corsa units have a five-year

or 120 000 km warranty and a three-year or60 000 km service plan.– Wheels24.co.za

Vehicle owners are urged by a well-knownSouth African insurance company to en-sure that they do not fall prey to a recent“car repair scam” exposed on the investi-gative television programme, CarteBlanche.

The scam involves criminals using so-cial media to track down disgruntled carowners, who are not satisfied with the re-cent repairs to their vehicles.

The syndicate then uses this informationto contact the vehicle owners in an elabo-rate scheme to get the owner to hand overthe vehicle. The scam usually involves con-vincing the owner by phone that the ser-vice centre will collect, repair and returnthe vehicle.

The owner is usually caught off-guard,

thinking that the service centre is reactingto a customer service issue. The ownerparts with the car never to see it again.

Personal lines underwriting manager,Marius Neethling, warns vehicle owners tobe extremely cautious when dealing withindividuals who seem to have possessionof convincing personal information.“Criminals are nothing if not ingeniousand we urge car owners to be very carefulabout the information that they post onlineabout issues such as car repairs.”

In terms of the Protection of Personal In-formation Act, your personal information, contact details and some of the specific in-formation that a vehicle repair centre willhave for a specific purpose should be pro-tected.

“If you are contacted by someone whohas information about you or your car, youshould confirm any subsequent arrange-ments directly with the service centre. Theeffort of a short phone call could save youa lot of trauma and financial loss,” saysNeethling.

He is advising car owners to protect theirvehicles as follows:

* Always communicate directly with thevehicle service centre representative con-cerned;

* Do not hand over the vehicle to anyoneunless you have independently verifiedthat the collection service is legitimate andthat the collector of the vehicle can identifythemselves;

* If in doubt, discuss the matter with

your service centre and satisfy yourselfthat your information is secure and youunderstand the procedures they use forcommunicating with you.

* Be careful on social media – you are po-tentially broadcasting personal informa-tion including information relating to re-cent vehicle repairs, that you need to pro-tect.

“Policy holders would do well to consulttheir broker to ensure they understand theconditions in their policy when it comes toallowing third parties to take possession ofa car, whether it is for repairs or other pur-poses. Your broker will advise if you areproperly covered and explain the condi-tions of your policy. This is the best wayto get peace of mind,” says Neethling.

Be careful of car repairing scam

Take an Adventure on an adventureKTMunleashes anAdventure range strong-er than ever with the arrival of the KTM1290SuperAdventure andKTM1050Adven-ture to bolster the dynamic and newly re-fined KTM 1190 Adventure and 1190 Adven-ture R for 2015.With over a decade of experience and de-

velopment, the currentAdventure rangede-ploys some of the most sophisticated auto-motive technology combined with KTM’s‘Ready To Race’ philosophy to make thesebikes more dynamic, safer and excitingthan ever. The KTM 1290 Super Adventure lives up

to its name by redefining the standard forluxury touring on a motorcycle. Boastingfeatures including 160hp, 140Nm, semi-ac-tive suspension, cornering lights, cruisecontrol, optional hill hold control, KTMpowers into its new segment with a bikethat embodies superlative technology in ev-ery respect as far as its power, comfort andequipment goes – but of course with an ex-plicitly dynamic touch. The KTM 1050 Adventure employs nei-

ther excessive power nor equipment for

those who demand a travel enduro that de-livers pure riding enjoyment in comfortover long distances, but with a chassis thatcan exploit the twisty routes or simply outmanoeuvre traffic when escaping. With itsV-twin engine beginning its life from theKTM 1190 Adventure, the reduction in ca-pacity comes without a decrease in fun –matching its bigger brother for power andtorque up to its 95hp. For riders on an A2licence, the 1050 can be restricted to meetthese requirements. For such a dedicated range of bikes, KTM

has launched a devoted microsite to thesemachines – www.ktmadventure.com. Thisis where riders can find out further detailson the line-up, comparing the models towork out which Adventure is for them. Thehuge array of PowerParts enhancementsand personalization for these bikes can beinvestigated and riders can also share pho-tos of their own adventures to help inspireothers. These exciting machines will then be-

comeavailable atKTMdealers acrossSouthAfrica in autumn of this year.

Freight HandlingThe movement of cargo through the supply chain requires people to operate forklift trucks, cranes thatload containers onto ships, and straddle carriers that move containers to the ships side.

Terminals and warehouses require people to manage cargo in and out of facilities. There are essentiallyfreight handlers in most businesses. Freight Handling is an integral part of the supply chainmanagementsystem and provides a vital support service to industries which span all modes of transport.

Learners completing this qualification, in whatever area of specialization selected, will be able todemonstrate the ability to consider a range of options related to their chosen field in order to makedecisions and improve performance around, inter alia, freight handling administration, planning, goodshandling, storage, transport planning and the basics of freight handling equipment maintenance.

SEAN CAMPBELL

Thehighly anticipated, potential league-deciding match between Giants andCrusaders truly lived up to the pre-

match hype.It was fast, exciting, action-packed and

with the short game squeezed in as well.Battle lines were drawn as supporters fromGrassy park and Kensington came out intheir numbers to support their teams.

The Giants started with Jaydee Thorneand he contained the Crusaders’ hitters forsix innings before he exhausted his 110pitches allowed for the day. Thorne (6 in-nings, 2 Hits, 3 BB, 5K’s and 2 HBP) was re-placed by Kurt Pretorious at the top of the7th inning with the score 7-4 to the Giants.

This is where the wheels came off for theGiants, as Pretorious (0.1 inning, 1 Hit, 3Runs, 3 BB) struggled to find the plate andwas later replaced by Carlo Koks in thesame inning. Crusaders found Koks’ pitch-ing to their liking. Koks finished the game(2.2 inning, 5 Hits, 3 BB) but was also sabo-taged by the Giants poor defence. The Gi-ants made 5 errors in the game.

Crusaders surprised the Giants by start-ing with the experienced Benjamin van derRoss. This almost backfired on Crusaderswhen Van der Ross conceded 4 runs in thefirst inning. Van der Ross (2.1 inning, 3Hits,3 BB and 3 HBP) was quickly replaced bythe young Cameron Fortuin. Fortuin didmuch better (6.2 inning, 6 Hits, 0 BB and 7K’s) and made scoring difficult for the Gi-ants. Crusaderswere fortunate that the fourerrors theymadeweren’t as costly as theGi-ants’ errors. Carlo Koks 4/5, 1 RBI was the

Giants’ best batter. Aldrin Hendricks 2/3, 2RBI’s and Cameron Fortuin 2/5 were Cru-saders’ best batters.

* In Softball action, Glenthorn A defeatedFalcons 6-3 onSaturday to secure their thirdsuccessive Western Province Softball Fed-eration (WPSF) Super League Champion-ship with three games still to be played.

Glenthorn A has a very successful field-

ing unit spearheaded by cousins Alex andNicole Fortune, which is well complement-ed by the powerful and effective pitching ofLauren Mulder and she was well supportedby the standout hitting of Carla Swanepoeland Lisa Erasmus.

Glenthorn A remains on course for theLeague and Knockout Double when theyface Falcons in the final next month.
