The road has been labelled the “deathstretch” by motorists.An additional speed camera has been ap-

proved for the intersection of Spine and Tra-falgar roads and will be installed early nextyear, confirms City of Cape Town TrafficServices officials.A number of people have been killed on

Spine Road in Strandfontein over the lastyear but negligent and reckless drivers con-tinue to speed despite speed limit signs on theroad.Merle Lourens, the Chief Inspector for

Traffic Services, says the existing camera onthis roadway close to Mitchell’s Plain hasbeen moved and will be replaced at a later

stage. However, with the festive season kick-ing off, the provincial minister for transport,Robin Carlisle, has already announced an in-crease in road deaths for December.He says roaddeathshave increased by 31%,

seeing 62 people killed in the first 10 days ofDecember, this compared to 43 in 2011.Carlisle believes this to be a very grim start

to the holiday period.The Strandfontein East Ratepayers’ Asso-

ciation chairperson, Mario Oostendurp, saysunregulated intersections along Spine Roadhave become accident hotspots.“The main contributing factor to the high

accident rate on this road is speeding, unli-censed drivers and motorists disobeying therules of the road,” Oostendurp says.A horrific car accident on Spine Road

claimed the lives of three Mondale High ma-triculants on Saturday 24 November.The accident happened on the corners of

Spine and Church roads, Strandfontein.

Keenan Smith and Kelly Ford died on im-pact, and Leigh Anne Swail was resuscitatedat the scene and airlifted to Groote SchuurHospital where she died a short while later.Lourens says: “Thecamerahasbeenmoved

to another site. It is the camera housing thatis damaged. Cameras in the city are oftenmoved so as to more effectively deter danger-ous driving.”The camera on Spine Road was moved in

July 2009.When asked if the camera would be re-

paired, Lourens responded saying the “site isone of 100 rotational sites andwill be repairedor upgraded when we rotate a camera to thatsite”.However Oostendurp says Spine Road, be-

tween Weltevreden and Strandfontein Road,is notorious for speeding motorists. “Seriousinterventions need to be put in place at thesehotospots either in the form of traffic circlesor raised intersections,” he suggests.

The intersection at Birkenhead Drive andSpine Road is one of the more problematiccrossings, he adds. “One of our main con-cerns is this intersection at the new mall.”When this reporter visited the intersection

it took almost five minutes for her to crossfrom Birkenhead Drive into Spine Road dueto the high volume of traffic on the road.Of the 62 lives lost already in the province,

28 (45%) of them have been passengers, while20 (32%) have been pedestrians.“This has been a very grim start to the fes-

tive season with lives being lost at a rate ofsix per day. The uncharacteristically highproportion of passenger deaths immediatelyidentifies a lack of seat belt compliance, par-ticularly in respect of back seat passengers.“Therefore, in addition to the continuing

measures in respect of drunk driving, speed-ing and fatigue management, the enforce-ment of buckling up amongst back seat pas-sengers will be intensified,” adds Carlisle.

Librarians say people have set up shackright outside the library’s doors.The number of people visiting the facility

has fluctuated since the vagrants moved in,staff say.About 20 000 people visit the library every

month.When this reporter visited the area, two

woman and a man were seen crawling out ofone of the cardboard structures outside thelibrary.Another woman was seen taking an early

evening nap, also in a cardboard structure.Library management say people visiting

the facility don’t feel comfortable having tonavigate the vagrants’ living space.Tandeka Gqada, the Mayoral Committee

member for Community Services, says the li-brary has been grappling with this problemfor the past four years.“It startedwith two people sleeping outside

the library and the group has grown sincethen. The group fluctuates in numbers, butthere is a core group that remains constant,”she says.Richard Bosman, the Executive Director

for the City’s Safety and Security depart-ment, says they regularly evict vagrants fromoutside the library.“This is an ongoing integrated effort be-

tween the various law enforcement agenciesoperating in the area,” he says.Amanvisiting the library toldPeople’s Post

he understands the homeless have nowhereelse to go, but worries about the drug scourgein the shopping precinct.“There is a lot of young people living in the

TownCentre. They don’t bother us, butmanyof them can be seen buying drugs from thedealers operating here and this is worrying,”he says.Gqada says library staff are often victim-

ised by the vagrants.“There have been occasions where staff

have come into conflictwith the vagrants andthere have been instances when library staffhave been blamed for actions taken by LawEnforcement in breaking down structuresbuilt by the vagrants.”A trader who sells fruit and vegetables just

outside the library says the vagrants are nota nuisance to him or his customers.

However Gqada says library patrons andstaff are concerned for their safety.“Anti-social behaviour could lead to people

fearing touse the library andadecline in visi-tors. There is also a health concern, becausethe vagrants use the staff entrance and anyavailable space as a toilet. Some patrons haveexpressed their concerns about the safety ofchildren who use the library for educationaland recreational purposes,” she explains.Zainab Kura (26), who lives at the fruit and

vegetable stall, says she stays the night tokeep an eye on the stand.The newlywed says the “problematic” va-

grants use their children for drug money.

“I live here and see what happens. Some ofthem steal from each other. Some of themsend their children to beg and then use thatmoney to buy drugs,” she explains.Zainab lives with her wheelchair-bound

husband, Shahied Kura (30).The couple moved into the Town Centre in

May when they tied the knot.Zainab says while some of the vagrants

have casual jobs, they very seldomhavemon-ey for food.“Some of the vagrants park cars, but they

use that money for drugs. We often see themgoing to buy from a known drug dealer in thearea. Some of the people have been living

here for over 10 years,” she says.Bosman says alternative accommodation

has been offered to the homeless people. How-ever, most of them have turned down the as-sistance and those who have been relocatedhave simply returned to the area a few dayslater.“These people have not been allowed to

continue to occupy the shopping hub. Thereare new vagrants continually being replacedby others. This area is also a haven for streetpeople as they are being sustained by thebusiness community, who give handouts di-rectly to the street people or offer them infor-mal employment,” he says.

HEART defects in children often go unde-tected.

This is believed to have been the case whenthree-year-old Khithrah Edwards Herculesrecently died of a heart-related complication.

A Bayview family is still mourning the lossof their three-year old daughter whom theysay died of a heart attack.

However, paediatric cardiologist Liesl Züh-lke says it is very unlikely for a child thatyoung to die of a heart attack.

She says: “Eight in 1000 children can be

born with a heart lesion which can cause suddendeath. Heart lesions are not an uncommon prob-lem, depending on the severity. If undetected itcan, however, lead to death.”

The family had been on holiday at Goudini Spalate last month when Khithrah suffered from aheart problem at the poolside.

Khithrah’s father Shakier Hercules (20) saysher sudden death came as a huge shock to thefamily.

The young parents were spending the weekendat the resort with another three couples.

The couples had been playing a game of domi-noes when the incident happened.

“We were enjoying ourselves and had just

started braaiing when two of the womendecided to take the three little ones to thepool. Not long after, one of the ladies camerunning back with our little girl in herarms.

“We put her down and tried breathinginto her to get her breathing back to nor-mal, but all that came out were burps andfaint sounds. We called the ambulance;they arrived an hour later. Khithrah wasstill alive.

“The paramedics tried resuscitatingher. After 30 minutes, they came out andinformed us that our daughter had passedaway,” Shakier explains.

The little girl’s body was later taken toRawsonville mortuary for an autopsy.

It had been established that she had aheart attack, he says.

Zühlke explains that heart attacks inchildren are very uncommon.

“A heart attack is when a person hasa normal looking heart, but their coro-nary artery is blocked, usually from cho-lesterol. It is incredibly rare that this hap-pens with children.”

People suspected that she had drowned,Shakier says, but the autopsy report indi-cated that no water was found in herlungs.

“My daughter had an abnormal heartand therefore suffered from a heart at-tack. We did not know that she had a heartproblem,” Shakier adds.

Khithrah was the Hercules’ only child.The girl’s mother Kiswat Edward Her-

cules says: “Every day is a challenge. Allthe memories are still here, but we acceptwhat happened. We are taking it one dayat a time.

“She was a very joyful and active littlegirl. Khithrah will be missed by everyonewho knew her.”

Zühlke says children often suffer fromheart defects which go undetected.

“When someone has a heart defect it canmean that their heart is not structurally nor-mal. There may not be four chambers or theremay be holes between the chambers. Thevalves of the heart may also be abnormal, thiscould lead to a child dying of a heart-relatedproblem,” she says.

THE announcement of an on average5.5% hike in bus fares is expected toleave a bitter taste in the mouth of com-muters.

The price hike comes into effect onMonday 30 December, Golden Arrow hasannounced.

The public transport service providersays “soaring fuel costs” are a contribut-ing factor, adding the increase has “onlybeen considered after all other cost ab-sorption measures have been exploredand exhausted”.

Golden Arrow general manager FEMeyer says: “Over the last 12 months thediesel price has increased by 14%, whilethe nationally determined wages esca-lated by 8.5%. These two cost items con-stitute about 74% of Golden Arrow’s to-tal costs.

“This is further compounded by thecumulative shortfall in funds from theDivision of Revenue Act subsidy alloca-

tion, which has not been in line with thecontracted escalation rate.”

In spite of the challenges, Golden Ar-row has continued implementing its re-capitalisation programme.

In the last year 120 MAN HB2 and 10Volvo BR7 buses have been added to thefleet at a cost of about R182m.

“A decision to increase bus fares isnever taken lightly or without carefulconsideration, but in this case it is sim-ply unavoidable. We have, however, en-deavoured to minimise the impact onour passengers by keeping the increaseas low as possible and by excluding pen-sioner fares and most off-peak fares.”

Passengers can postpone paying theincreased fares until 13 January 2013 inthe case of 10-ride clipcards (which arevalid for 14 days) bought on Sunday 30December and until 5 February 2013 inthe case of monthly clipcards (valid for37 days) bought on the same date.

THE price of property in Mitchell’s Plainhas bounced back to levels last seen at theheight of the property boom in 2007.

Real estate experts believe the area offersgood value for money.

The owner of a local agency, RealNet Select,says the area is known to have a redeemingtrack record in terms of the quick turnaroundin sales.

Realnet Select’s Astrid Smith de Gruchy

says: “Most homes sell within a month if theprice is right.”

Around 70% of those snatching up propertyin the area are first-time homebuyers, shesays. “About 90% of our buyers require 100%bonds and the banks are currently respond-ing very favourably to applications for suchhome loans, which indicate that they see un-derlying value in Mitchell’s Plain properties.

“However, around 40% of bond applica-tions are still denied due to the poor creditrecords of prospective buyers. The local mar-ket thus shows future promise as consumers

who pay off outstanding debts and clear theircredit records are likely to enter the market,”she explains.

Estate agents working in Mitchell’s Plainface many challenges. People who officiallybought and paid for their council homes backin the 1970s never in fact took legal transferof their property, says Michael Feltsman,principal agent for Rawson properties inMitchell’s Plain. If these homeowners wantto sell their homes, a double transfer has totake place, first from the council to currentowner, then to the new buyer.

Feltsman says new homebuyers coming into Mitchell’s Plain often have tarnished cred-it records or large amounts of unsettled debt.

“These, of course, disqualify them from get-ting mortgage bonds, now that the NationalCredit Act is being enforced,” he adds.

Mitchell’s Plain is estimated to have be-tween 24 000 to 30 000 homes, accommodatinga population of over 1,4 million people.

De Gruchy says Weltevreden Valley is fastbecoming the area of choice, thanks to its cen-tral position and proximity to the main roadand Westgate Mall.

A MAKESHIFT dump site in Rocklandsis an eyesore to residents.

The dune on the corners of De Duin Ave-nue and Angus Way has become a dumpingsite as maintenance of the City-owned landis not being upheld.The dune is situated next to Duneside Pri-

mary School.Ward Committee member for Environ-

mental Affairs, Henry Cox, says the site isnot only an eyesore, but also a fire, environ-mental and health hazard to those livingnearby.Ward councillor, Eddie Andrews, says he

is aware of the problem and has reported itto the relevant City of Cape Town depart-ments for immediate action.Cox says he has been promised that the

City’s Parks department would send out ateam to clean-up the dune.However, this has not materialised.“It’s summer, the grass is dry and it be-

comes a fire hazard for the school. The sandhas eroded under the stairs on the dune.Children play under there and use it as acave. It is not safe at all,” Cox seethes.Andrews says: “The current concerns

raised are being attended to. The area hasbeen cleaned and once soil has been pro-cured the roots will be closed.”Cox believes the dune has great potential

which needs to be unlocked.“The dune is an asset and should be main-

tained, upgraded and beautified. Insteadpeople are seeing is as a dump site. It looksterrible,” Cox explains.Andrews says the Parks Department is re-

sponsible for maintaining the dune and reg-ularly cleaning the area.He says it is the onus of the residents to

report dumping.“In addition to adhering to that cycle,

Parks is dependent on residents to also raisedumping issues that fall outside the mainte-nance cycle,” Andrews says.He further urges residents to log munici-

pal faults and complaints and ensure theyhave a reference numberwhich they can useto follow up if their complaint has not beendealt with.A free-call line at the TownCentre Library

has been re-launched and can be used to logmunicipal complaints at no cost.The free-call lines connect directly with

IT HAS been a year of violent strikes.

Miners and police clashing made worldheadlines. Farmworkers also voiced theirfury, sparking yet another violent strikefor a better wage.It was also the year new bank notes, la-

belled Randelas, were issued.Locally, it was also a year of upsetting

and delightful events. People’s Post takesyou back over the year that was.

JanuaryThe year got off to a great start as news

spread that Mitchell’s Plain schools hadincreased their matric pass rate.A significant improvement had been

noted at three top schools in the area.Despite limited resources, staff shortag-

es and other social issues which faced theclass of 2011,Mitchell’s Plainmatriculantsattained a pass rate of 82,5%.Mondale High School scored 95,1%, fol-

lowed by Oval North High School with93,5%and Rocklands High School with88%.Mondale improved their pass rate by

8%, Oval North increased theirs by 17%,while Rocklands dropped by 5%. GlendaleSecondary increased by 26%, makingthem the most improved school in Mitch-ell’s Plain.

FebruaryMuslims across South Africa were

rocked by a meat scandal where pork hadbeen labelled halaal by company OrionCold Storage.

MarchThe meat scandal had made Muslims

lose faith in the Muslim Judicial Council(MJC) who certifies products as halaal.A drag racing incident also claimed the

lives of two people from Hanover Park(“Drag racing claims two lives”, 27March).The pair had been driving along Spine

Road when their car ploughed into theboundary wall of a house in Cave Close.

AprilPetrol prices rocketed and plunged mo-

torists and commuters into a panic.

The petrol price had been at an all-timehigh, Metrorail was upping its fees whichleft commuters concernedabout a possiblehike in taxi fares too.Motorists forked out a record high of

R11.59 a litre, the highest since July 2008.Taxi owners were forced to push up

their fares as a result.

MayFrom1May, it has been nothing but dra-

ma and aggression on the Philippi Horti-cultural area - the sprawling Siqalo infor-mal Settlement was born.Hundreds of families intended to illegal-

ly occupy the private and state-owned landon FreedomDay. However, the Anti-LandInvasion Unit and the police took actionand evicted them.The settlement has since mushroomed

with shacks spilling on to neighbouringproperties.The City of Cape Town has washed their

hands of this, saying there is nothing theycan do about land invaders occupying pri-vate property.They have however supplied squatters

with water and sanitation.

JuneTwo brothers, aged 12 and 14, say they

were victimised by security at Pick n Payin Town Centre in June.The pair had been shopping with their

parents when security managed to snatchthe siblings and take them in for question-ing on suspicion that they had stolen achocolate.The children had been traumatised as

security frisked them and questionedthem in the absence of their parents.No stolen items were found on the chil-

dren.

JulyA first-time mother shed light on prob-

lems many women face when visiting theMitchell’s Plain Maternity and ObstetricsUnit.The 19-year-old from New Woodlands

claimed young mothers were belittled bynursing staff.She was also worried about the unhy-

gienic conditions in the labour ward andbathrooms. Her claims prompted a probeby the provincial health department and

forced the provincial minister of health tointervene.Following a visit to the facility, provin-

cial health minister Theuns Botha com-mitted to giving the clinic amakeover, butsaid: “There is one thing I cannot buy andthat is your staff’s attitude. It is unaccepta-ble to treat patients badly as they have no-where else to go.You, the staff, on theotherhand can go and find another place towork”.

AugustPatients noted an improvement in serv-

ice and the attitude of staff following theminister’s visit to the MOU.A new state-of-the-art medical facility is

expected to open its doors to patients inJanuary.The R500-million hospital, which is on

the same premises as the Lentegeur Psy-chiatric Hospital, has an eco-friendly de-sign and will accommodate people fromMitchell’s Plain, Mandalay and Philippi.Patients at theMitchell’s Plain DayHos-

pital believe staff are overworked and un-inspired and welcomed the new hospital.The new facility should accommodate 5000patients per month.

SeptemberWheelchair-bound commuters refused

to be derailed by Metrorail failing to pro-vide adequate facilities for the disabled.The station has no ramps from the ticket

office at Station Plaza on to the platforms,forcingMetrorail security guards to assistcommuters in wheelchairs.Frustrated disabled passengers have to

be carried down a steep flight of stairs byat least four security guards to reach theplatform.A lift had been installed at the train sta-

tion several years ago, but is still not inoperation.The provincial minister of Transport

and Public Works had allegedly promiseddisabled commuters that hewould look in-to the matter and provide better access atthe train station for disabled people.He said the wheels of change had been

set in motion, but the process of makingpublic transport hubs more accessible isnot happening fast enough.Carlisle said he hadmademoney availa-

ble toMetrorail for this, but hewas unable

to vouch how the funds were used.

OctoberFriday 12 October was a black day for

Kauthar Bobbs’ family.The five-year-old girl from Freedom

Park, Tafelsig, was last seen playing withfriends in a park a distance away fromhome.Little Kauthar is still missing.

NovemberAhorrific car accident claimed the lives

of three Mondale High matriculants justtwo days before they would have writtentheir final exam.They were all 18 years old.A Golden Arrow bus collided with a

white Toyota Corolla the teenagers hadbeen travelling in.The accident happened on the corners of

Spine and Church roads, Strandfontein inthe early hours of Saturday 24 November.Keenan Smith and Kelly Ford died on

impact, and Leigh Anne Swail was resus-citated at the scene and airlifted to GrooteSchuur Hospital where she died a shortwhile later.

DecemberAn elderly couple living on Vanguard

Drive were murdered just a month apartfrom each other.Hester (62) and Arnold Schultz (68) had

been living on the farm bordering thebooming Siqalo informal settlement sincethey tied the knot.The home belonged toArnold’s father in

1921.Arnold’s body was found in one of the

sheds on the property just two weeks ago,with blood stains and covered with a tow-el.He had been stabbed with an unknown

sharp object.The 62-year-old grandmother had been

strangled to death and sexually assaultedon her Philippi farm, allegedly by a coupleshe “rescued” from the streets and offeredaccommodation to in a shack on her prop-erty. The men apparently tied Arnold upwith neck ties and ransacked the house forabout 45 minutes when theymurdered hispartner.Four suspects were arrested for her

murder and have appeared in court.

season. Some people are caught up in the fe-ver-pitch throes of spending, buying andwrapping those gifts.It is the time of year of expectation and re-

turning gifts best left on a shelf. The day afterChristmas, Boxing Day, is one of the busiestdays in the retail sector, what with all thosereturns or unwanted gifts being converted tocash. It is also a time, to borrow a phrase,when many buy items they don’t need, to im-press people they don’t like with money theyhave yet to earn. Instead of hovering at a shelfto dither over price versus value, there arecountless gifts no store could ever stock.These, too, can be gifted.For those at a loss over what to give to

whom, there are options.Cast your glance at others around you. Per-

haps they really do not needmore clothes, butothers would be happy to take your oldclothes gathering dust in the corner of yourcupboard. What about your “fat” clothes or“thin” clothes you may never again wear?Give it to a shelter or the Salvation Army.Demand is at a premium for blood. This is

a product man cannot make. When you do-nate blood, your own stock is replenished ingood time.Spend your cash wisely. Remember a loved

one who has passed on in the year by makingapledge to aworthycause. Pickone inhonourof your late relative or friend.There are other gifts you could never buy,

like showing somepatience towards cashiers.They are particularly under pressure thistime of year and could dowith some courtesy.Prepare a meal for the homeless, spend

some time with people in hospitals or specialcare centres, give a smile to someone else ora visit to an elderly neighbour. Whatever yougive, the choice remains yours.

THE City of Cape Town is request-ing that we, Joe Public, come for-ward with ideas on how to makeCape Town Stadium economicallyviable.This statement surprises me be-

cause when we give proposals onhow to create employment thereseems to be no interest, but now weare good enough to try and help theCity saddle the white elephant.My response is to sell the stadium

to a consortium from across theseas.Now back to us and our unem-

ployment rates. As a country withtraditions and cultures, we cannev-er change – nomatter howWestern-ised we want to be.On the Cape Flats we have had

hawkers standing on the pavementselling their goods. We have hadhorse-and-cart teams doing thesame. Both created employmentand business.I was recently at a fleamarket and

admired how people were using atrailer, which they transportedwith a vehicle, to sell their goods.I saw it as a potential for our

youth who cannot find work to op-erate trailer-orientated businesses.Imagine: with simple guidelines

and authorisation and away fromother vested businesses we havepeople selling from trailers parkedin authorised demarcated spaces.The possibilities are endless andthe main aim is to reincarnate themodernised metal horse-and-cartdoing business and creating em-ployment.I have no proposal for our stadi-

um, but am proposing a small solu-tion to a big problem.KEITH BLAKE

I AM writing this letter on behalf of those wholost a loved one – whether through illness, acci-dent or heartbreak.For me 2012 (and it is not yet over) has been

a year of great loss, pain, hurt, anger and allthose emotions in one, but I am still standing.I lost my dad to cancer in March.He was a great man; my mentor, the one I

sharedmyaspirationswith, the onewhoalwayshad a positive spin to things even if it seemedlike nothing would come right.His death left a void that cannot ever be filled.

Sometimes Iwalk aroundand see oldermenandI long for him.I talk to people and they talk about their dads

and I long for him.I comfort myself with the knowledge he want-

ed me there when he passed on and I was there.I opened the door so he could go peacefully.I sometimes block out that he is gone. I won-

der how Christmas will be without him for the

first time this year and it hurts.But I will survive this; others did so before

me.I lost my uncle also to cancer a few months

after my dad, but he didn’t suffer long.His death is also a great loss to my family.

He was a good uncle, spoilt all the cousins andalways had time to talk and encourage.Neighbours passed on, too, and people keep

saying “it was their time”.I don’t believe in that. God decides when it

is our time to go.My family is going through a lot of other

things now, but I believe it is because ourstrength is being tested.We are strong people and will overcome.I wish to say to those in a similar situation:

THE Metro Police Dog Unit hasbeen brought in to educate chil-dren on the dangers of drugs.

Councillor Natalie Bent, thechairperson of Subcouncil 23, saysshe, in conjunction with the MetroPolice Dog Unit, visited schools inher ward ahead of the school holi-days.She says a presentation was done

with pupils showing them whatdrugs look like.This was followed by a dog show

on how the canines are used to as-sist Metro Police to sniff out drugs,bombs and even firearms.

MITCHELL’S PLAIN UNITED slumped toa home defeat against ASD Salt RiverBlackpool after going down to ten men inthe second half on Saturday.

United dominated territory and possessionbut failed to finishall but oneof thenumerousgoal scoring chances they created.David Notoane, United’s head coach,

blamed his team’s lack of composure in frontof goal for the 2-1 defeat.“I think it was a very good game, against

good opposition. I think the boys did well. Weshould have taken our chances in the firsthalf,” said Notoane.“We knew something would give once we

went a man down against a good team likethis.“Overall I am disappointed with the result,

but happy with the performance.”Notoane added quick lapses in concentra-

tion allowed the opposition to get their goals.Blackpool had the first opportunity to score

at the start of the game when they won a freekick on the edge of the area, but the resultingshot hit high above the goal.The home team immediately responded

and went one better by forcing the Blackpoolkeeper Carl Bauemicliter into a save, whenThembileMapukata cut in from the left flankand hit a right-footed drive.Mitchell’s Plain started to dominate the

match around the seventh minute and bom-barded the Blackpool keeper with shots andballs.United had several excellent opportunities

to take the lead in first half, butwere let downby their finishing. While Blackpool, by con-trast, were mostly ineffective on attack.The home team resumed their dominance

in the second half, but Salt River almostsnatched the lead in the fifth minute whenSherwin Sauls robbed United centrebackFaeez Khan of the ball and sent a curling shotjust wide of the far post.Salt River eventually took the lead when a

shot from Thembile Mapukata looped overthe keeper.The visitors grew in confidence after the

goal and started pushing more players for-ward, but theirrenewed commitment to attack proved to

be their undoing.

United equalised at around 25 minuteswhen a ball from Tasleem Paulse put CarlLark through on goal and he finished calmly.Its seemed only a matter of time before

United would score their winning goal, butthe course of the game was changed dramati-cally in the 40th minute when midfielder Ya-seen Ceres was sent off for his second yellowcard offence.Blackpool made the numerical advantage

count and took the lead with a David Wainai-na Galeri drive.Thematchwas the last for this year forboth

teams, as the leaguewill break untilmid-Jan-uary. Notoane says his team is still on trackto achieve their short-term goals despite theloss.“Our objective was to be in the top six at

the end of the year. So depending on other re-sults I think we are close to our objective,”he says.

MILANO UNITED have rubbishedrumours that their newly appoint-ed technical director could soontakeup thehead coach role at localrivals Santos.

Brandon Truter joined the GrassyPark side in late October, after leav-ing Second Division side Cape TownAll Stars earlier that month.Reports of another move for Truter

first surfaced onMonday 3December,when Soccer Laduma published thestory online.Truter admits he negotiated with

Santos and spent a week with theteam, but that no agreement wasmade.“Milano started negotiating and of-

feredmea contract as technical direc-tor. When I signed the contract I noti-fied Santos that I am taking the jobat Milano,” says Truter.“There was a bit a bad blood and

court action was threatened becausethey said I had a verbal agreement(with them), butnothingwasagreed.”According to Truter, Santos chair-

man Goolam Allie has claimed hecould be joining the People’s Team,

since has signed for Milano, on twooccasions.He adds the rumours have been dis-

tracting, as he received several con-cerned phone calls on Friday 14 De-cember, sayinghe is “completely hap-py” at Milano.Allie, however, says Truter was

never offered a position with the sen-ior team and was just considered fora role with the youth teams. “(Thereis) absolutely no truth (to that). Therewas never a discussion with BrandonTruter to becomea senior coachatmyclub, ever,” Allie says.“He was employed by the club in
