MITCHELL’S PLAIN HOSPITAL
Treatment investigatedSAMANTHA LEE
@Samantha_Lee121
The family of a Tafelsig pensioner planto take legal action against Mitchell’sPlain Hospital, claiming staff negli-
gence led to his recent death.Abraham Solomons (72) was rushed to the
hospital on a referral from his general prac-titioner on Saturday 23 August.
His wife, Cecilia, says his legs were swol-len and he was experiencing difficultybreathing.
They rushed him to the family doctor.“You could see something was wrong. The
doctor gave him oxygen and took a scan. They then sentus to thehospitalwitha letterbecause he said it was an emergency case,”she says.
Cecilia explains her husband could barelywalk when they arrived at the hospital at13:15.
They waited at the reception desk – wheretwo doctors were apparently sitting at thetime – and waited for 30 minuets before be-ing assisted.
“A security guard came to ask if we werehelped and my husband was given a wheel-chair. A male nurse then came to take theletter and gavemyhusband oxygen and tookhis sugar and blood pressure,” she says.
Cecilia says they waited for a doctor tocome, but nobody helped them.
She kept asking as her husband’s condi-tion was deteriorating.
“After five hours no one had seen to him.He kept asking to lie down and started slip-ping and falling off the wheelchair. Mydaughter-in-law went to look for a bed forhim. After finding one, still no one assistedus,” she says.
After looking for someone to assist herhusband onto the bed, a security guard anda cleaner helped them, Cecilia says.
“My husband told me he wasn’t going tomake it and still no one had helped us. Afterclose to six hours we went home at 18:30,”she says.
Her husband stayed in hospital. The family was called back to the hospital
at about 19:00 andCecilia says theywere toldto wait at reception.
Thirty minutes later, the doctor arrived, she says.
The doctor, whom Cecilia describes as“cold”, informed them that her husband hadpassed away.
Thewife says the doctor informed the fam-ily that Abraham had died at 18:43 after suf-fering a heart attack.
However, the death certificate indicatesthe cause of death as “sepsis”.
“I don’t think they saw to him when weleft because he died shortly thereafter. They
found him dead on the bed and when I askeda question, the doctormade a rude commentand walked away,” she alleges.
“Is this how you treat someone who justlost a loved one?”
Cecilia has nowquestionedwhy the certif-icate and the doctor’s explanation do notmatch.
The family have also written letters to theprovincial health department, hospitalman-agement and board, but have not received aresponse.
Health department officials confirmed thetreatment of Solomons and his family wasnot according to hospital policy and that thedepartment would investigate.
All relative parties would also be contact-ed in due course.
But Cecilia says the hospital needs to as-sess how patients and their families aretreated.V Have you had bad service at the Mitchell’s Plain Hospital? Starting with the word “Post”, SMS your viewsto 32516. SMSes cost R1.

TOWN CENTRE
Mobile unit to combat crimeSAMANTHA LEE
@Samantha_Lee121
The safety of shoppers at TownCentre has been prioritised. This follows a joint initia-
tive by Mitchell’s Plain police, lo-cal councillors and other law en-forcement agencies which has re-sulted in the installation of amobile police caravan. And with the increased police
visibility, traders and shopperswho frequent the business hub saythey are already feeling much saf-er.Trader Nkosinati Timela, who
has been robbed, says he has al-ready seen a positive change.“We can see shoppers are a bit
more relaxed so theywill come andbuy now. It is amazing what a dif-ference such a small thing hasmade,” he says.Timela explains they have been
asking for solutions for years andsays it was “no secret the TownCentre was a dangerous place”.“I am gladwe can finally see that
something is being done to make ita bit safer,” he adds.Mitchell’s Plain police spokes-
person Sergeant Jerome Voegtsays the unit was placed at the taxirank due to robberies, theft out ofmotor vehicles and vandalismwhich occurs there.“The station deploys officers dai-
ly to root out those who want tocommit crimes in theTownCentre. We cannot comment on deploy-
ment,” he says.At a recent Community Policing
Forum (CPF) meeting in BeaconValley, ward councillor SolomonPhilander assured residents thatthe implementation has shownsuccess.“Town Centre businesses will
eventually leave the area due tocrime and this will affect the great-er community,” he said.Philander explained that if law
enforcement agencies don’t com-bine efforts, there couldbe job cuts, dilapidated public spaces andcriminals taking up the space forillegal activities.“The onlywayweare able to deal
with this is to increase visible po-licing and be serious about servicedelivery,” he added.Since the introduction of themo-
bile unit in September the hub hasseen a decrease in crime.“The community is pleased with
the service and it makes them feelsafer on the taxi rank. Crime hasnot reduced by 100% but the policepresence does deter would-becriminals from committing crimein the area,” Philander said.Voegt confirms the decrease and
says the venture has provided atangible and visible reduction incrime.Commuter Belinda Kleinhans
says she hopes it becomes a perma-nent fixture.“Crime has always been a prob-
lem and still is. I do see some posi-tive changes but I think they
should increase their presence. Iwill admit that I feel a lot safer andI am sure many other commutersand shoppers do too,” she says. But the future of the mobile unit
is unclear.Voegt explains there is a devel-
opment planwhich is currently be-ing rolled out by the City of CapeTown. “The end result will deter-
mine the future of this policingventure,” he explains.V Do you think the mobile unit should stay?Starting with the word “Post”, SMS yourviews to 32516. SMSes cost R1.

wounds on his right foot andwas taken to theclinic for treatment.

Twohighly invasivewasp species are ex-panding their range throughout theprovince.
Council is now putting measures inplace to control the spread of thesewasps.
The European paper wasp (Polistesdominula) and the Ger-man wasp or yellow-jacket (Vespula ger-manica) have found theCape metro and Bolandarea to be ideal habitatssuited for their expan-sion.
However, given theirinvasive nature, con-cern has arisen that ifthese wasps are left un-controlled, they may spread to the ma-jority of towns in the Western Cape andother provinces where the climate iseven more suited to their dominion.
According to international cases of in-vasion involving both species, these in-sects have the potential to create prob-lems ranging from being a nuisance toserious economic impacts in the wine, deciduous fruit and beekeeping indus-tries.
It is known that the German wasp inparticular is aggressive and there are
several reported cases of them stingingworkers harvesting grapes and otherfruits. They can also present a hazard toresidents and homeowners enjoying theoutdoors who may unintentionally dis-turb a colony. They are known to attackand kill honeybees and infiltrate bee
hives, which is detri-mental to the honey in-dustry.
As per the NationalEnvironmentalManage-ment Biodiversity Act,both species are listed asCategory 1b invasivespecies which requirecontrol by means of aninvasive species man-agement programme.
The City of Cape Town and the Stellen-bosch Municipality have put in placededicated teams trained in invasivewasp control and will therefore beequipped to address the spread of theseinvasivewasps, says Johan van derMer-we, Mayoral Committee member for En-ergy, Environmental and Spatial Plan-ning.
Residents requiring assistance withthe removal of these wasps can visitwww.capetowninvasives.org.za/edrr/target-list to report any nests.

Healthcare is set to receive a welcomeboost when an upgrade of TafelsigClinic is completed.
This is the first major renovation sincethe facility opened its doors in the early1990s.Over 500 people walk through the clinic’s
doors every day.The clinic, situated on the corner of Kili-
manjaro and Pyrenees roads, servicesTafelsig, parts of Beacon Valley, Lost Cityand other surrounding areas.Services such as immunisation, child
care, family planning, adult chronic servic-es, medication dispensary, daily tuberculo-sis treatment, counselling and testing areoffered at the facility. The tender for the R5m upgrade has been
awarded. And with the lapse of the 21-dayappeal period, the project has been set inmotion.Work on this first set of renovations took
place in March 2007 but due to dust andnoise staff were unable to provide the fullrange of services.Work on the upgrade of previous renova-
tions started last week and building workhas already been set to take place in phasestominimise inconvenience and the disrup-tion of services.Andwith the increase in demand the clin-
ic cannot currently accommodate the hun-dreds of patientswhovisit the facility everyday, says Tafelsig Health Forum chairper-son Beatrice Leng.“This upgrade will likely alleviate the
overcrowding of the clinic and help stream-line services rendered,” she says.Ward councillor ShevalArendse agrees it
is a necessary development. The upgrade includes making the ceil-
ings higher and expanding the buildingwidth to accommodate the growing de-mand.Arendse says the builders have started
with the facilities for disabledpeople whichforms part of the dispensary.“With the wheelchair ramps completed
we will have it be more accessible, and be-cause the dispensary is the most used partof the hospital we want that completedfirst,” Arendse says. However, Tafelsig resident Candice Solo-
mons says very little has been done to en-sure the safety of patients.Due to gang activity, she says many pa-
tients are scared to travel to the clinic.“I hope they plan to include some more
safety measures as well. Having a fancy fa-cilitymeansnothing ifwe aren’t safe,” Solo-mons says.Solomons also says a facility to shield
sick patients from the elements is needed.Arendse explains with the expansion,
there will be more room for patients insidethe facility. At this stage, Arendse says, they are not
sure what specific security measures willbe implemented. The upgrade is set to be completed by
2015 and will include HIV testing and treat-ment.V What are your thoughts on the new developments?Starting with the word “Post”, SMS your views to32516. SMSes cost R1.

Composting is taking rootComposting is growing in and could save theCape Peninsula.Statistics reveal that 12% to 14% of would-
bewastewas diverted from city landfill sitesas a result ofCity ofCapeTown implementedhome composting programmes during thelast financial year.According to a City statement, an average
of 21kg of household organic waste filtersthrough its waste stream every month. But composting can change this, as re-
vealed by a City-conducted study. The investigation, run over nine months,
tested how much organic waste diverted
through individual or community; how sus-tainable home composting would be; wheth-er the project would change residents’ atti-tudes with regard to disposal of waste; andthe impact of the programme on carbonemissions.A total of 677 people from four areas and
different economic backgrounds participat-ed in the study. It also included two schools and a commu-
nity organisation with a food garden.
Participants were provided home com-posting containers and educational materi-al, and were asked to measure the volumesof kitchen and soft garden organicwaste col-lect from March to November last year.“More than 38 tons of household organic
waste was recorded as being diverted fromlandfill at an average of 16.92kg per house-hold a month. The figure is based on the av-erage of 41% participant feedback data re-ported a month,” the statement reads.
“For the community-based organic wastedrop-off sites, a total of 13.1kg, per compost-ing container, of organic waste was divertedeach month.”In addition, a number of questionnaires
revealed that up to 90% of home composterssurveyed previously disposed organicwasteinto their wheelie bins.By the final questionnaire, 78% of the 239
respondents composted at home. “In a pro-gramme where buy-in from the public is socrucial, these statistics are very encourag-ing”, says Mayoral Committee member forUtility Services, Ernest Sonnenberg.

Telkom hangs up on local businessSAMANTHA LEE
@Samantha_Lee121
A Mitchell’s Plain business womanclaims she has lost a large sum of mon-ey due to poor customer relations over
the last two months. This, she explains, is a result of Telkom
cables being stolen and vandalised inEastridge last month.Residents were left without internet con-
nections or telephone lines for close to fourweeks.Zaafirah Adams-Jassiem says for most it
maynot have been an inconvenience, but forher it created a problem.“When you run a business from your
home and rely on your landline and ADSLline to operate it becomes a real inconven-ience,” she says.
Adams-Jassiem runs three businessesfromher home computer and claims she lostmany clients because she could not submitonline applications.“I have a landline and an ADSL phone.
When I complained they sent out a techni-cian but only for the ADSL. He told me they
prioritise complaints.”After twoweekswith no repairs andunan-
swered complaints, she says she took to Tel-kom’s Facebook page to find a solution.“Their page is inundated with complaints
about their service and how terrible theirnetwork is. I am not alone in this. Whatmade me most upset was a review from awoman in Durban who boasted about howquickly her cables were fixed. Why are wetreated differently?” she asks.Telkomdidnot respond to questions posed
by People’s Post on the incident and insteadsupplied a generic statement on cable theft. The statement says business and residen-
tial customers are severely affected due toan alarming amount of copper cable theftwhich results in service interruptions.“Information and Communication Tech-
nology (ICT) services are a vital componentto the running of businesses and an integralpart of everyday living,” it reads. But Adams-Jassiem says although they
admit it, they show no sense of urgency inrepairing the problem.“They come to fix one phone but not the
other. They are running a monopoly in
Mitchell’s Plain and theyknow we will not be able togo anywhere else,” she says.
Adams-Jassiem explainsshe contacted Neotel but wasinformed that they do nothave the infrastructure toprovide services to the area.“If Telkom had competi-
tion they wouldn’t treat us sopoorly,” she says.Telkom says they treat
each case with priority butthere are various factors toconsider.“Each incident of cable
theft needs to be handleduniquely. Some cases allowfor the replacement of the sto-len copper cable, while oth-ers need alternative accesstechnology. These include aprocess of assessment, funding, planningand deployment,” the statement reads.Adams-Jassiem says she has been prom-
ised the cableswouldbe reinforcedbutnoth-ing has been done thus far.
According to the statement, Telkom nowplan to safeguard their infrastructurebyem-ploying armed security firms. No specific areas or timeline was provid-
ed.

MOUILLE POINT
Soccer spat atHellenic ClubSAMANTHA LEE
@Samantha_Lee121
A group of 30 boys were left disap-pointed when a planned day of funended in “bad service” and “a cold
reception” at a well known MouillePoint community club. The families of the Mitchell’s Plain
boys are seeing red after they were toldto leave the Hellenic Community Clublast month.Strandfontein resident Shihaam
Ahmed says she, along with other wom-enwhose sons play for the StrandfonteinFootball Club, booked a Fives Futbolcourt for two hours.“We made a booking for a team of
about 30 boys. We booked the court forthe under-7 boys’ team to play from 09:30to 11:30.We arrived at about 09:10 and allwent well for the first 20 minutes,” shesays. As time approached for the game to be-
gin the boys were told they were usingthe wrong court, Ahmed explains. The other mothers were sitting at ta-
bles around the court making partypacks when they were approached by astaff member.“She told us to move from where we
were sitting to the court’s side as thiswas a community centre and privateproperty,” Ahmed says. She claims this is when things turned
sour as the boyswere told they can’t playin the soccer court either.“How do you tell boys aged between
five and seven they cannot play in thepark?” she asks. She claims another staff member later
approached the group and asked them toleave.“We were told to go to Waterfront
Fives Futbol because they wanted us offtheir property. Our kids were not beingdisrespectful to anyone, but we were notwanted on the premises while we werethere,” she says. The group were refunded and left the
club.Hellenic Community Club treasurer
Basil Bardopoulos says the occurrenceis “highly unlikely”.He says the groupwouldnot have been
asked to leave unless they were causinga disturbance.“This is a private club but is open to
guests. Special preference is given tomembers and anyone can become amember. Another factor to consider isthat we do not run the Fives Futbol andadditional fees are charged for the useof those courts,” Bardopoulos says.Ahmed has now written to the Hellen-
ic Community Club and Fives Futbol. She has also taken to social media to
vent. In a community group she wrote:“I really thought this was a new SouthAfrica but today again I was provenwrong. Please tell me am I too black orcoloured to be there?AmImissing some-thing in this new SA?”.Bardopoulos says they have not seen
the letter. “There are specific areas thatwill remain exclusive to members.”

Drugs linked to mental illnessThe link between substance abuse and men-tal health effects was the focus of council asWorld Mental Health Day was celebratedacross the globe on Friday.Health professionals at four of the City of
Cape Town’s five treatment sites are trainedto deal with mental health issues.“We cannot deny there is a strong link be-
tween substance abuse and mental health is-sues. While we don’t have statistics on thenumber of ‘dual diagnosis’ cases, we have no-ticed high rates of mental health issues withsubstance abusers and [vice versa],” saysMayco member for Health Benedicta vanMinnen.“Traditionally, substance abuse and men-
tal health serviceshavebeen fragmented, butbecause the City’s treatment sites are basedin clinics with doctors and mental healthnurses, it has allowed the provision of an in-tegrated service where clients can be treatedfor both.”Mental health screening is part of council’s
general screening and assessment processfor clients wanting to participate in alcoholand drug treatment programmes.People identified as possibly having amen-
tal health issue are then referred for diagno-sis and treatment, which runs concurrentlywith the addiction treatment. The client’s mental health status is moni-
tored and staffer members ensure they taketheir medication. Mental health issues suchas depression, bipolar disorder and schizo-phrenia are the main mental issues presentin clients.A total of 1 621 clientswere screenedatCity
Health sites in the last financial year, a state-ment reads, but not all complete the 16-weekprogramme.“At a site likeTafelsig, whichhasbeen run-
ning since 2008, the staff have built a goodrapport with the doctors and mental healthnurses. We have seen an increase in thenumber of substance abuse clients receivingmental health services,” Van Minnen ex-plains.“This could be [as a result of] staffers being
more sensitised to co-occurring disorders or,from a substance abuse perspective, it couldbe [as a result of] having access to on-sitemental health services. We have improvedretention and outcomes for these clients.”City staff assist clients by arranging ap-
pointments for a range of services, whilethere is continuous dialogue and follow-upsbetween the mental health and substanceabuse staff.Clients are also provided with support
services once they exit the programme andongoing monitoring of their mental healthstatus.

erected to address the issues raised.According to a statement by Melomed,
in partnership with the City, they havedrawn up a plan which sets realistic andfeasible goals to combat crime on the door-step of the hospital. There have been reports of vandalism,
vagrancy and robberies.Melomed client services officer Nuraan
Cader says as part of the plan they haveerected of a new fence around the hospitalpublic parking areawith access controlledpoints at the entrance toTownCentre, pub-lic parking and pedestrian walk ways. The hospital along with law enforcementagencies plan to employ a security compa-ny which has a dog unit.“This will ensure the safety of our pa-
tients, staff, visitors, contractors and thecommunity frequenting the Town Centrebusiness hub,” she explains. The City also reinstalled lights and lamp
posts in the Tango Square parking areawhich had been vandalised by vagrants.Cader says the overall look of the park-
ing area has been improved.“All ambulance and wheelchair bays
have been repainted and appropriately de-
marcated. The final issue we want to tackleis for the City to reinstall the refuse bins sto-len by vagrants.”This, Cader explains, will assist with the
aesthetic maintenance of the area.“We would like to thank the University of
the Western Cape (UWC) body corporate fortheir assistance, as well as the City.”

DISASTER RELIEF
Be on fire alertThe Cape’s hot and dry season is fast-ap-
proaching, bringing with it a higherrisk of fires.
Local relief NPO Mustadafin Foundation, which assists communities in disaster situa-tions, urgesCapetonians tobe fire-consciousand do their bit in reducing fire threats.“Fires in Cape Town have become amajor
risk, especially in informal settlements. Thestrong winds in summer can cause greathavoc when [residents] are careless anddon’t monitor flammable objects,” saysfoundation director Ghairunisa Johnstone.“Heat-based objects should always be at-
tended to andproperlymonitored.Residentsshould be properly informed onwhat to lookout for and how they can prevent a fire fromstarting in the first place.”Flammable objects, such as candles, ciga-
rettes, matches, lighters and appliances, must be carefully monitored and not left un-attended. It must also not be left near flam-mable textiles.“Fires can be extinguished by pouringwa-
ter over it or covering it with sand or cloth-ing. Make sure candles are blown out beforegoing to bed and that heating devices areswitched off. Don’t throw cigarette butts out
of vehicles or windows,” Johnstone says.If you have electrical devices in your
home, make sure it is properly serviced.Do not overload electrical extensionswith
more than four plugs in one unit, she warns.“It is also advisable to switch off all appli-
ances at the socket when leaving yourhome,” Johnstone advises.Residents using paraffin should educate
themselves on its dangers, as paraffin appli-ances are dangerous if not handled correct-ly. “Keep children away from paraffin anduse with caution, even when unlit. Makesure paraffin appliances are on a clean, dryand firm surface with no blankets, clothesor cloths nearby. Also ensure that you havea bucket of sand nearby to extinguish a firequickly,” Johnstone recommends. If you live near a bush or open field, make
sure you have firebreaks around your hometo minimise the probability of veld fires en-tering your property.Invest in a fire extinguisher or a garden
hose and educate your children about firesand what to do should a fire occur.V If you would like to donate time, goods or fundsto the Mustadafin Foundation, phone their office on(021) 633 0010 or visit www.mustadafin.org.za.

CRIME
Cluster clampdownSAMANTHA LEE
@Samantha_Lee121
A call to clamp down on Mitchell’sPlain streets has resulted in variousarrests and confiscations.
Responding to residents’ requests,Mitchell's Plain cluster commander Ma-jor-General Abraham Goss mobilised theLentegeur, Strandfontein and Mitchell’sPlain police stations and carried out vari-ous operations.Aweek of intensified crime fighting saw
officers confiscate drugs, alcohol from ille-gal liquor outlets, firearms and ammuni-tion. They also executed several warrantsof arrests and drug-related arrests andsearched well known drug outlets.Starting on Sunday 28 September and
ending Sunday 5 October, the three sta-tions embarked on the six joint operationsthroughout Mitchell’s Plain. These operations led to the arrest of 86
suspects for various crimes.Goss says they are pleased with the suc-
cess of the venture.Since his introduction to the precinct
last month, community mobilisation andintegrated policing have been among histop priorities.Among those arrested, 32 were wanted
suspects, 36 people were apprehended forillegal possession of drugs and 14 otherswere arrested on cases relating to crimesagainst women and children.Police executed four search warrants
and confiscated 33g of heroine, 90g of tik,six mandrax tablets and 19g of dagga. In two separate cases, police also
clamped down on an illegal liquor outlet
and confiscated 66 litres of alcohol. At another house they found two illegal
firearms.Mitchell’s Plain Cluster Community Po-
licing Forum chairperson Michael Jacobssays the active policing is a step in theright direction.“We are promoting more crime fighting
initiatives by the police. We want to fightcrime and residents need to work with thepolice and not against them. The effortsare a starting point and we hope it contin-ues moving forward,” Jacobs says.Goss says they will focus on drugs and
gangsterism.
“These successes are a reflection of thepositive relationship that exists betweenthe community of Mitchell’s Plain clusterand the police. We want to thank all com-munity structures andurge the communi-ty to remain vigilant and to contact theirrespective sector commanders shouldthey have any information,” he says.Goss also encourages residents to get in-

structures should do so by becoming partof their street committees and neighbour-hoodwatches to help ensure safer commu-nities for us all.”

Buses serving seven routes come and go every few minutes from the new Adderley station.
Make the switch to MyCiTiIf you haven’t used MyCiTi before, then visit the newAdderley station and find out how easy it really is to use thissafe, affordable and convenient public transport service.
The opening of the Adderleystation in the heart ofcentral Cape Town’s
public transport hub offers userstransfers that are even moreconvenient than ever. Just crossthe road from the rail station andthe station taxi rank and catchMyCiTi. With buses every fewminutes in the busy peak hoursthere is very little waiting time,so there’s no more queuing in thewind and rain or waiting for thevehicle to fill up before leaving. All you need to use MyCiTi is
amyconnect card. Get yours forR35 at the station kiosk and loadwith money or Mover points – andyou can tap in and travel to yourplace of work, school or college,or simply to enjoy a day out withfamily and friends.Like using an ATM or a cellphone,
the MyCiTi fare systemmay takea little getting used to at first,
but soon tapping your card andreloadingmoney becomes secondnature. It’s the way of the futuretoo, as the plan is to eventually useone smartcard on all the majorforms of public transport.
Ask for Mover points and saveWhen you load your card at thestation kiosk, ask the cashierto load Mover points. Mover isavailable from R50 and you save30% on all fares, no matter whattime of the day you travel. Youwill be surprised at how low yourfare can be.
Load Standard for convenienceWhen you load money asStandard, you can use the moneyto pay for purchases of up toR200 at shops. So convenientwhen you have forgotten to drawmoney and you need bread andmilk for the morning.
Changes toMyCiTi services
MyCiTi services havebeen reviewed tobetter match the
services to the level ofpassenger demand on thevarious routes and at differenttimes. This is to ensure thatthe service is sustainableand that resources are usedoptimally to benefit themost number of people. Thismeans timetables have beenchanged across the system,in general with more frequentservices in the busy morningand afternoon peak and fewerservices when there is lessdemand. Some routes havealso changed. Details areavailable on the website,www.myciti.org.za and at busstops and shelters.
Nwabisa Mkabile, Nyanga“I work in Camps Bay and startedusing MyCiTi in March but CivicCentre station was a bit far. NowI get off the taxi and straight intoAdderley station, it’s great!”
James Rodgers, CBD“I use the service to get aroundthe city bowl and hardly usemy car anymore. With the newAdderley station, I don’t have towalk to Civic Centre anymore andit makes my life really easy.”
Amutujilani Charamba,Kenilworth“It is very difficult travelling witha baby on a taxi especially if youhave done some shopping too. WithMyCiTi, I simply park the pram andlock the wheels. It makes goingplaces with him so much easier.”
Heather Adams, Kuilsrivier“I’m taking my daughters to TableMountain for the day. This is ourfirst time using the service andI hope my girls will use it a lotbecause other modes of publictransport aren’t very safe foryoung girls.”

I t may be considered a good omen to befollowed by an albatross, but not all ofthese encounters bring luck to the bird.Accidental seabird deaths during fishingare the single greatest threat facing manyseabirdpopulations.Albatrosses, inparticu-
lar, are under extreme pressure of extinc-tion.However, as NationalMarineWeek drawsto a close, one organisation is celebratingconservation success.BirdLife South Africa, a registered non-profit and public-benefit organisation andthe only dedicated bird conservation NGOin South Africa, has assisted the hake trawl
fishery in South Africa to reduce albatrossdeaths by 99%.
Feathered friendAccording to the World Wildlife Fund, 15of theworld’s 22 albatross species are threat-ened with extinction.Albatrosses have evolved wings that usea special gliding technique to travel long dis-
tances without using their muscles. Thewingspans of these birds can reach over 3m,the longest of any bird. All albatross species is threatened withsome level of extinction risk, says BirdLifeSouth Africa Albatross Task Force leaderBronwyn Maree.“Albatrosses are the greatest flying birdson earth. They are icons of the oceans. Theymove effortlessly across staggering expans-es of trackless ocean and have a near-mysti-cal ability to return with pinpoint accuracyto their islands from anywhere in the wideopen seas,” she says.“They perform no economic service, andthe world would continue to revolve shouldthey all go extinct. Preventing extinctions ofthese amazing seabirds serves a higher pur-pose, it serves to keep species alive for thesheer pleasure andprivilege of knowing thatthey exist.”
The catchTrawlers use large nets, held in the waterby thick cables, to capture fish living on thesea floor. Seabirds, especially albatrossesand petrels, are attracted in their thousandsto the trawlers when fish offal is discardedfrom the onboard processing factory, Mareeexplains.“While scavenging, seabirds are vulnera-ble to becoming entangled with the cables, and being dragged underwater and drown-ing,” she says. But BirdLife has developed a simple andeffective solution.A line strung off the back of the boat, withstreamers that dangle off the main line, wasall that was required to scare the seabirdsaway from the danger areas behind trawl-ers, Maree says.Earlier this year, the team published astudy showing that their lines were respon-sible for reducing accidental deaths by 90%.For albatrosses alone the benefits wereeven bigger – a reduction in deaths of 99%.The lines are built through a collaborativeproject between BirdLife South Africa andthe Ocean View Association for Personswith Disabilities with sponsorship from To-tal South Africa.A team of 10 individuals with various in-tellectual and physical disabilities from theassociation can build a line in under anhour. These lines are then sold to the fishing in-dustry to bring in a small income for the cen-tre, Maree says. “Avoiding seabird bycatchis good for business and for the environ-ment.Moreover it’s relatively easy given theright tools. Bird scaring lines have now be-come part of everyday life at sea and fisher-men no longer resist their use,” she says.
Award winning workThe Albatross Task Force recently tooktop honours at theMail &Guardian newspa-per’s Greening the Future awards. Theirwork took first prize in the Green Technolo-gy category. This comes hot on the heels of an interna-
tional award for the South African team –in April Maree travelled to the Netherlandsto receive her Future for Nature Award.

Young stars cash inMondale High School’s under-19 foot-
ball team bettered their performanceat this year’s Sanlam Kay Motsepe
Schools Cup in Pretoria with a third placefinish.
The team improved on their fifth placefinish of last year and bagged a staggeringR500 000 in the process.
They were up against Mpumalanga’sKwa-Shuku in the third/fourth play-offmatch. In the end, the Mitchell’s Plainschool were 4-2 victors, winning R400 000 toadd to the R100 000 they clinched for win-ning the regional tournament.
Team coach Nigel Crowie is proud of histroops’ achievement. “Our aim was to fin-ish fourth this time around, so this thirdplace finish is a bonus,” he says.
“The players seem to get better everyyear, but we prepared well for the finals andour hard work paid off.”
Mondale is gaining a reputation as a foot-ball nursery. Three players of last year’steam have been snatched up by PremierSoccer League (PSL) clubs – Brandon Dean
(SuperSport United), Darren Smith (Ama-Zulu) and Dillon Fransch (Ajax CapeTown). The latter is still in matric and waspart of the team this year.
Crowie hopes more PSL clubs will noticethe players following this year’s outstand-ing performance. “Our school is not asports academy,” Crowie says.
“The principal promotes excellence anddoesn’t stand for mediocrity, so all the boysexcel academically and on the sports field.”
