Evicted family moves back inTAMMY PETERSEN
LEGAL action will be taken against twoManenberg families who disregarded
an eviction order, as well as a communityorganisation that assisted them by mov-ing their furniture back into a council flatafter it was removed by City of Cape Townofficials.
But the tenants say that while they expect-ed this outcome, they have no other choicebut to stay where they are.
Beverley Pedro (42) says she literally wetherself when City employees marched intothe home she has lived in for almost threeyears on Wednesday and started carrying outher furniture as she watched helplessly.
The mother of three, who suffers from TB,asthma, depression and chronic arthritis, de-scribes the day as the “worst in [her] life” andsays she lives in fear that the officials will re-turn and forcibly remove her and her family.
Pedro and Falzielah Jacobs moved into theColleen Court flat in August 2008 to care fortheir neighbour and legal tenant, Gairoenisadu Toit, who was dying of lung cancer.
The 63-year-old died three months later andthe two continued to live in the flat, and werelater joined by their families.
The house is occupied byPedro, her daughter Mishqah(22), her two sons aged 18 and14 and her grandson, who isonly two years old.
The family lives in the bed-room of the flat, while Jacobs, her husband Shaheed, andtheir year-old baby live in thelounge.
A week after Du Toit’sdeath, City officials visitedthe flat and told the two thatthey had to vacate the rentalunit but, says Pedro, this wasnot an option as she had no-where else to go.
“If they had offered us alternative accom-modation it would have been a different storybut they didn’t. We stayed put and our fami-lies also moved in because they had nowhereto live.”
Despite numerous letters addressed toPedro and Jacobs being delivered, the twostill did not move out.
“We went to the rent office to explain oursituation on numerous occasions. I took med-ical certificates which confirm that I am asick woman, but the rent officials didn’t want
to hear any of it. They kept telling us we mustget out,” Pedro explains.
Jacobs says the two families had no choicebut to stay as they had no alternative.
“Where must I go with my baby? You can-not toss people out on the street if they willbe stranded and homeless with a perfectlysuitable home standing open. Do they reallythink we are the only families living in acouncil flat illegally? There are dozens of oth-ers!”
The letters continued to stream in, but thefamily stayed put.
“Then in November last year, the sheriff ofthe court came knocking and delivered asummons for us to appear in court in Janu-ary,” Pedro says. “I was not feeling well at thetime, but when the date arrived, I was willingto go and represent myself.”
But, she says, they arrived half an hour lateat the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court that day.
“We travelled by taxi so we got there a bitlate. We also didn’t know exactly where to go,so finding the correct courtroom also provedto be a mission.
“But when we eventually got there, wewere told that because we weren’t present atthe proceedings, the judgment was in favourof the city council, and there was nothing we
could do about it,” Mishqah says.In February, council officials
again visited the flat.“They found me flat on my
back in bed, sick as a dog. But thekind officials who came that daysaid they would report that I wasill and that they would comeback at another time,” Beverleysays.
The family, however, contact-ed Proudly Manenberg and in-formed them of the situation. The organisation then took it toCommunities for Social Change, who met with former mayor DanPlato and council officials in
April. However, the City stuck to their gunsand reiterated that the families were livingin the flat illegally.
“Thedayafter themeeting, oneof the ladiesfrom the rent office came here and told methey would be moving us to Blikkiesdorp. What do they want me to go do there? Die?”she asks.
“The conditions in that settlement are in-humane. I will not last six months in thatsandy, filthy place. They will carry me out ina casket.”
Beverley says the situation was quiet until
Wednesday, when a convoy or policemen andremoval employees arrived on their door-step.
“About 30 of them came into my house justbefore 09:00 and started walking around inthe flat. I was standing there in my pyjamas, confused about what was going on.
“One of the men told me I could get dressedin the bathroom, and when I came out, halfof my furniture was standing in thecourtyard,” Beverley says, close totears.
“When I looked outside, people werestanding and watching, unable to doanything because the police werestanding there, armed with long guns
like they were waiting for people to make awrong move.
“Once they were done, they told me to getout of the flat or they would remove me likethey had removed my furniture. I didn’t havea choice – I left.”
The locks were also removed and the doorwas boarded shut with a metal sheet.
However, the convoy had barely left whenmembers of Proudly Manenberg broke openthe door and started carrying the families’furniture back into the flat.
Richard Mathee, the deputy chairperson ofthe organisation, says evictions “will not betolerated”.
“There is a huge housing backlog and untilthe authorities can solve it, they have abso-lutely no right to throw people out of homes.Where do they expect these families to go?The people are desperate!”
Members of the organisation also formeda human chain around the stairs leading tothe flat after the family moved back in.
“Die DA government het mooi gewag totdatdie voting klaar is, nou treat hulle die menseso. Hulle is soos varke!” a woman screamed.
Grace Blouw, the City’s manager for Exist-ing Housing, confirms that Proudly Manen-berg requested a moratorium to be placed onall evictions, especially for the Pedros, butthat it was explained to them “on a numberof occasions” that a court order had alreadybeen obtained
“At a meeting on 7 April, Proudly Manen-berg once again requested that the City stopthe eviction at 28 Colleen Court.
“ProudlyManenberg refused to accept thatit could not be done. At a later stage, alterna-tive accommodation was offered to the fami-ly, which they initially accepted, but afterconsultation with Proudly Manenberg theydecided against our offer.”
She says the Sheriff then carried out hisduty as instructed by the court.
Blouw says illegal tenants will only be al-lowed to stay in a unit if they have been inoccupation prior to 1 March 2006 and qualifyin terms of the City’s set criteria.
“The next qualifying applicant from the da-tabase will be allocated the dwelling,” sheadds.

Wanza dismissescampaign funding claimsTAMMY PETERSEN
CLAIMS that Proudly Manen-berg funded its chairperson’sbid to become a ward council-lor from the salaries of itsworkers have been rubbishedby the independent candidate.
Mario Wanza stood for elec-tion in three wards, spendingR60 000 on T-shirts, postersand registration with the In-dependent Electoral Commis-sion.
He stood as a candidate inwards 42 and 46 after beingelected by the organisationthrough a nomination proc-ess.
He received a total of 411votes.
Last week, residents contacted People’sPost claiming that workers involved in acleaning and greening project were paidshort on theirMaysalaries, receiving lessthan half of their R1 000 monthly pay-ment. “The people must suffer while hesmiles on the posters, trying to get votes,”one woman told People’s Post. “His pos-ters don’t put food on the people’s tables. Is this how a community worker acts?Shouldn’t he be more worried about thewellbeing of the residents?”
Another woman who contacted thenewspaper claimed money allocated tothe workers was being used for “bigglossy posters, flyers and T-shirts withhis face on it”. She further claimed thefirst-time candidate was also paying forcars and bakkies to be spray-painted andthat Proudly Manenberg workers weretold to raise R50 000 to cover the costs ofthe campaign. “Workers got paid onlyR120 as a bonus in April to buy onions andpickled fish, and R360 in May. Where didthe other money go? Is he campaigning onthe backs of the poor people in Manen-berg?” she asked.
But Wanza responds that the organisa-tion does not have access to the workers’money, as the project locals are involvedin forms part of the Extended PublicWorks Programme, which is run by na-tional government. “Workers’ salariesare deposited straight into their bank ac-counts. The money used for the Proudly
Manenberg election campaign was re-ceived via donations and other funds theorganisation has,” he says.
Caroline O’Reilly, the project managerat Teba Development, an NGO contractedby the Department of Co-operative Go-vernance to roll out the public works pro-gramme, confirms that workers’ salariesare paid directly into their accounts.
In November last year, when Wanzawas appointed chairperson of ProudlyManenberg, People’s Post reported thatthe executive committee of the organisa-tion also decided to have a representativerun for ward councillor (“Finance factorclouds conference”, 16 November 2010).
Wanza says the organisation was trans-parent throughout its election campaign, and that members were informed that thebid would cost R60 000.
“The money was taken out of the Proud-ly Manenberg funds, and fundraisers willbe held by the various zones so that themoney can be pushed back into our ac-count. Private partners also gave us mo-ney for the campaign,” Wanza says.
He adds that complaints surroundingthe organisation’s move to run in the elec-tion are being made by people who are“trying to cause divisions within ProudlyManenberg”. “We are not here to enter-tain individuals spinning negative sto-ries about us. If they have questions, theycan come take it up with us. There is toomuch work to do to waste time on suchthings.”

Eyesore a ‘security risk’TAMMY PETERSEN
A BOARDED-UP, unattractive housesituated between two Lansdowne
schools has raised the ire of residents liv-ing near the property who fear that theproperty may put children’s safety at riskand cause an influx of vagrants into theirstreets.
The house, situated in Lansdowne Road, has, according to locals, not been empty “thatlong”, but fears are “growing daily” that theminimal activity noted on the site will esca-late beyond control.
The property is owned by Islamia College, and was previously let to a man who died atthe beginning of the year.
The front doorways of the house have beensecured and the gates have been locked withwire.
Shameela Johnson says that in light of thevagrancy problem within the area, it is onlya matter of time before the seemingly desolateproperty becomes a haven for the homeless.
“The metal sheets which cover the windowsand doors can easily be ripped out and putback up once they are inside. Before long, wewill see that place infested with drunk hobosand there will be little we can do about it.”
Another resident, who asks to remain anon-ymous, says her husband recently caught aprostitute and a client in a compromising situ-ation behind the waist-high gate of the proper-ty. “It was dark and he was just taking a walkto the shop. When he asked what they weredoing, the woman swore at him and asked himif the property is his. What a cheek! I wouldlike to see what the council will do now, be-cause it looks like the invasion has alreadystarted.”
She says the house gives a bad impressionof the area. “This isn’t an area where you canbuy a house for a couple of thousands. We paygood money for our properties, and we are de-cent people who live here. We don’t have placein Lansdowne for suikerhuisies where the
house looks like a spectacle. Someone must fixit up immediately or have it demolished.”
Resident, Robert Jack, says he regularlytakes walks on Lansdowne Road and has star-ted to keep an eye on the children when theschool bell rings.
“There are lots of sick people in the worldand it would be so easy to snatch a child anddrag him or her onto that property to do some-thing twisted. That house is isolated andcreepy – it’s a crime den waiting to happen.”
Islamia College principal, Shaheem Galant, says the college is “sensitive to the securityof the area”, and that it does not wish to causeany problems for the surrounding communi-ty. “We are in the process of turning the houseinto a cafeteria and coffee shop, and work hasalready started from the back section of thehouse. I would like to set residents’ minds atease that we are aware of crime and vagrancyin our streets, and we have security measuresin place to keep the property secure.”
He says that while it is not yet known whenthe renovation will be complete, the schoolwill make every effort to see the building re-stored to fit in with the rest of the area.
Galant adds that the safety of the scholarsis given top priority, and “everything is beingdone to ensure the plans don’t compromise thesafety of the learners”.

Baby Caleb trial date draws closerREYANA STEYN
THE case of a mother and her boyfriend ac-cused of beating the woman’s son to deathin her Manenberg flat last year, has beenpostponed to Friday 10 June in the CapeTown High Court.
Chantal Booysen and Quinton Aysen, alsoknown as “Orre”, appeared in the Cape HighCourt last Friday for the murder of CalebBooysen (2).
Caleb’s lifeless body was found in his PamCourt home on Friday 21 May 2010. It is al-leged that Booysen and Aysen had slammedthe toddler’s head into a wall.
A post-mortem examination found thechild did not die from natural causes, andthat he had suffered abuse over time.
He had suffered multiple injuries, includ-ing brain haemorrhage, liver problems, abroken arm and wrist, and bruises all overhis body (“Shock after baby bashed todeath”, People’s Post, 1 June 2010).
When Booysen appeared in the AthloneMagistrate’s Court for her bail applicationon Monday 30 August 2010, she shocked thecourt when she said Caleb ate Mandrax tab-lets he found on the floor and that he con-stantly cried for food.
She said she would become frustrated andbeat him. However, she denied giving Calebdrugs. The day Caleb died, Booysen said, shehad left the house with the boy asleep in thecare of Aysen. When she returned she dis-covered Caleb’s badly-bruised body under ablanket on a couch.

COUNCIL flat tenants in Mentz Court,Hanover Park, fear that they are onlysteps away from falling through thestairs which have been supportingthem for 40 years.
Sections of the staircases that leadfrom the first to the second and thirdfloors have chunks of concrete missing, while others have cracks and large chipsin them.
“Jy moet versigtig trap,” a residentwarned People’s Post when we visited thecourt. “It seems fine, but looks can be de-ceiving.”
Residents make it clear that vandalsand thieves cannot be blamed “this time”for the state of the council property.
“This is because we have used thesestairs for years, and no maintenance wasdone on them. Even the railings are inbad shape. They move when you holdthem,” a woman says.
Fagmi Abass, the secretary of theHanover Park Civic Association, saysresidents’ concerns have been raisedwith the local rent office, but no feedbackhas yet been received.
“This is a dangerous situation. Com-plaints from other courts have also beenreceived, but the stairs at Mentz Courtare the worst. Even I am not eager to walkup those stairs. Imagine how the resi-dents feel.”
He says the civic association has evenapproached Mayor Dan Plato about thestairs’ condition. “We have not yet re-ceived feedback from him either. Thepeople’s safety is at stake here, and thismatter is not being dealt with with theamount of urgency it deserves. When will
it be prioritised? When they collapse?”However, Grace Blouw, manager of
Existing Housing in the City of CapeTown, says council’s housing directorateconducts inspections and carries out re-gular repairs.
“Repairs to staircases are consideredemergencywork, which receivespriorityabove all other maintenance requests,”she says.
Blouw continues that the City’s com-plaints database reflects complaintsabout the stairs and that they were at-tended to.
“The maintenance staff have conduc-ted an inspection, and have already re-paired some of the rails. The rails whichhave not yet been replaced are firmlyfixed. The concrete stringers will be re-placed during this financial year.
“Five complete staircase flights will bereplaced during the month of June. Addi-tional flights at Mentz Court and other af-fected courts in Hanover Park will be re-paired or replaced in the months follow-ing.”
Blouw adds that the much-anticipatedcouncil flat upgrade will kick off in AreaC – under which Mentz Court falls – inJuly 2013.

No help from policeover ‘thieving’ sonTAMMY PETERSEN
AN elderly couple say they are be-ing terrorised and repeatedly
robbed by their tik-addicted son, butattempts to lay charges at the Philippipolice station are rejected becausethey don’t have evidence.
The mother (61) says her son has bro-ken into her Hanover Park house on nu-merous occasions this year, but police atthe charge office refuse to open docketsor investigate the incidents.
On Sunday, the couple caught their sonred-handed in the back yard when theygot home early from church.
“When I spotted him, I went straight in-side and noticed that some of my cleaningproducts were missing. I went to himwhere he was standing and asked himwhat he had taken. I lifted his shirt andsaw my toilet cleaner in his pants,” themother says.
When she tried to remove it, her son gotaggressive and tried to wrestle her to theground. “My husband then had wordswith him from the door, and he pushed meand tried to make his way into the house.Luckily my husband closed the door intime, but then he tried to go through thebathroom window, which he always useswhen breaking in.”
She managed to pull him from the win-dow, but the incensed man allegedlythreatened the couple by shouting “Ekgaan julle vrek maak” before he left.
“We phoned the police, and when theyarrived, we told them what had happened. They asked us to make a list of what wasmissing and promised to come back inhalf an hour. We are still waiting forthem.”
Her husband says this is not the first
time the police had failed to investigatea crimeat theirhome. “InJanuarywe laida charge after he stole my cellphone andmoney that was in my bedroom. When wetried to lay a charge, we were told in thecharge office that we don’t have any evi-dence that it’s him,” the pensioner says.“He stole little things from the house, andwe were forced to hide all our valuablesor keep it behind locked doors. We evenhad to hide my pension or he would takethat as well,” she says.
It is understood that the man was ar-rested on an unrelated charge shortlythereafter and spent over a month in jail.
In March, the couple say they again no-ticed that valuableshaddisappeared fromtheir home. “We again phoned the policewanting to lay a charge, but they againpointed at the lack of evidence. Shouldn'tthey at least have opened a docket?” heasks. In April, someone broke into thecouple’s house and stole all their grocer-ies and detergents. Again, they say, theygot the same response from the police asbefore.
The exhausted mother says she has re-sorted to gaining an interdict against herson. “What else can I do?” she asks.
Warrant Officer Ettienne Conradie, thespokesperson for Philippi police, says of-ficers have to accept all criminal cases.
“All complainants must be helped. There is no choice involved. Crime is a se-rious matter and everyone must behelped.”
He says that anyone who is not satisfiedwith the service they received can lodgea complaint with the station’s manage-ment for investigation.
“We are here to render a service, andanyone who feels they didn’t get whatthey came for can speak to the station orbranch commander.”

Inconvenient truthTHEProtectionof InformationBill, alsoknownas the “Secrecy Bill”, is nothing but bad newsfor transparency in government.
The Bill seems to challenge the very founda-tion on which South African legislation is de-veloped – the Constitution – which ensuresfreedom of expression and that of the press.
In a shocking act last week, ANC MPs on aparliamentary committee taskedwithdebatingand finalising the Bill made headlines whenthey insisted that matters in this regard be fast-tracked to meet a deadline of 24 June.
This despite other parties’ representativeson the committee calling for continued brain-storming, discussion and consideration of ob-jections to the controversial legislation.
Once a world bastion for press freedom, SAhas now been demoted to the status of only“partially free” by the international freedommonitoring group, Freedom House.
The regression is a sad state of affairs whenconsidering the vast promise of a free and dem-ocratic country made at the very dawn of de-mocracy. Seventeen years later, the same polit-ical party that served as the catalyst for the fallof oppression and unjust governance is now, insome ways, increasingly at loggerheads withthe media, and respect for transparency of thestate is under serious threat.
The Secrecy Bill will serve as more than asimple annoyance and inconvenience for jour-nalists, and has a far-reaching impact on thefuture of the electorate. If left unchallenged itwill not only muzzle the media, but will alsorob every ordinary citizen of their right to holdaccountable the very leaders they elect to pow-er. Government officials at any level will beable to classify information as secret, a privi-lege which, in itself, could easily be abused.
The Bill also ushers in minimal protectionof informants, which means that the distribu-tion and publication of information regardedas classified could provoke imprisonment.
Various organisations and individuals havepublicly reiterated the effects this legislationwill have on us all, and they have called for are-draft of the proposed legislation.
The truth is always worth fighting for.

Local government elections. With reference to the person moaning
about Anthea Green. The DA won the Capehands down, even without your vote.Dream on! DA supporter
. I seriously think we should get anoth-er candidate for Ward 60 with our nextelection.
I am a DA supporter, but not a Green fan.I am keeping her big plan outlined in thearticle in People’s Post until the next elec-tion. Ursula
. Now that voting is done and the timehas come to put the shoulder to the wheel, who can we, the voters, go to when thesepublic servants are not doing their well-paid jobs?
. Zille, I want to see action not words.I hate shacks. Why don’t you give the peo-ple the ad in People’s Post for jobs? Wendyhouses don’t have plumbing and electrici-ty and you can’t install a fireplace.
The solution is that you must give thesepeople a proper roof over their heads, be-cause they also have a toilet problem. Iwant you to live in it for a month. This isa dare.
Service delivery suggestions. The City of Cape Town could save a
considerable amount of money in the longterm by offering electronic billing for allratepayers who are online. Postal billingis a waste of time, money, paper, postage, energy and resources.
. Now that we have voted for the DA,why can’t they scrap the rates in all the ar-eas?
Housing matters. Stop upgrading the old flats – rather
start building flats for poor people. We arein for a very cold winter and people needa roof over their heads immediately. VivaDA. Henry
. When giving people good houses, givethem an agreement too. They will be ableto rent it out, but they can’t sell it. Onlyone family can stay in a house or they loseit. One member of the family must be em-ployed. The can’t get the house if they al-ready have a house.
. To Zille and Zuma, why when buyinga house and taking a home loan do bankscharge us triple the amount when we payback? They must give service and not robus.
Broadcast blues. I hope that e.tv naked news does not
air, but what about that stupid “SMS andget naked pics”? Please take that off too!

I, TIMOTHY HOUSTON, father of ShannonHouston, who was shot on Saturday 14 Mayin Hanover Park, am very unhappy and con-cerned about my son’s safety with regards tothe article which was published about the in-cident (“Two killed in Hanover Park”, Peo-ple’s Post, 16 May).

THE Lansdowne Civic Association (LCA)takes cognisance of Ward 60 councillorAnthea Green’s response to the our chair-person, Esmé Gradwell’s, letter (“Hardwork ahead in Lansdowne”, People’s Post,24 May), which briefly noted that we havenot as yet received an apology from Greenfor her absence from the Ward 60 candi-date debate.
Councillor Green states that she “con-tacted the LCA to explain why she did notattend”.
Since Councillor Green’s response, res-idents have contacted the LCA manage-ment committee, requesting the reasonsfor her absence and why this was not com-municated, as aspersions that CouncillorGreen did not care to attend, was not both-ered to send an apology and is contemptu-
ous of our community, are implied.Bearing the above in mind, and Coun-
cillor Green’s comment that she is “tiredof the Lansdowne Civic Association”, wehave sent a personal invite to her to at-tend our 14 June executive committeemeeting, where her reasons for non-at-tendance of the debate, who she contact-ed, when this occurred, which mediumwas used and if she is willing to have thistested, will be requested.
As our interaction with her over thepreceding five years has been minimal,we hope she will attend.LESTER SEPTEMBERManagement Committee Member:Lansdowne Civic Association

Pregnant woman given ‘wrong medication’REYANA STEYN
IMAGINE battling to breathe, scared thatyou won’t get enough oxygen not only foryourself, but for your unborn child, andthen being given medication which couldharm your child.
This is what a six-month pregnant womanfrom Athlone claims she experienced at Hano-ver Park Day Hospital after she had difficultybreathing on Saturday 14 May.
Ellen Less (24), an asthmatic, was taken to theday hospital after her chest tightened and shehad difficulty breathing. “I have had asthmasince I was a baby, and I always get treatmentfor it, but it is even worse now that I am preg-nant,” says Less. “This is my first child and Iwould do anything to protect him or her, butthe way I was treated at the Hanover Park DayHospital was horrible. “As soon as I had diffi-culty breathing my family contacted an ambu-lance, which came to my house. They thenchecked my pulse rate and tried to stabilise me,but decided to take me to the hospital.”
At the hospital she was placed on a nebuliser– a device used to administer medication in theform of a mist into the lungs. After spendingseveral hours there, at 03:00 the following morn-ing her chest tightened again, but the doctorwho had helped her had left and another doctorwas on duty.
When she asked the doctor to be placed on thenebuliser again as she was having difficultybreathing, one of the nursing sisters told Lessthat her folder was not with them.
Less then told them that a folder was openedup for her the minute she arrived at HanoverPark Day Hospital. “I couldn’t believe they saidmy folder wasn’t with them,” says Less.
“I then got infuriated because my chest waspulling tight and I need to be assisted immedi-ately, yet they wanted to work according to afolder, which they didn’t have.”
After much deliberation, a nursing sisterplaced Less on the nebuliser and the doctorgave her medication, “Austell Paracetamol’’,
and sent her home, but when Less checked themedication it stated that it was not suitable forpregnant women.
She took the medication back to the hospitaland explained to the doctor that it was unsuita-ble for her. The doctor insisted that it was finefor her to use the medication, and she shouldn’tpay attention to the label. “I told her I was preg-nant and that the label said it was not estab-lished whether it was safe for pregnant people, but the doctor said I should ignore that andcould take the medication. I refused to take themedication, even though I was in a hugeamount of pain.”
Less went to a private doctor on Mondaymorning and he told her she had done the rightthing not to take the medication.
Less says she “can’t understand how a quali-fied doctor could give me medication whichcould have harmed my baby”. “I specificallytold the doctor I was pregnant, but she insistedit was fine to take the medication. What alsobothers me is that I could have expressed my-self, but what about the children who can’t. “Atthe hospital there were numerous mothers whobrought their children and babies who had thesame problem, and they were told there was nomedication for them,” says Less. “How can a
hospital that is supposed to care of the sick treatpeople that way?”
Charmaine Less, Ellen’s mother, is furiousabout the way her daughter was treated.
“People are treated like dirt, and this muststop. Something must be done about this. Whenthey become part of the medical team, they takea vow to help people, yet people get treated un-fairly. I am sick and tired of this.
“I wonder how they treat our elderly citizensif this is how they treat pregnant people?”
Faiza Steyn, the spokesperson for the Provin-cial Health Department, says the facility is una-ware of the problem. “It is unfortunate that MsLess did not forward a written complaint to thefacility manager or return during the week todiscuss the matter with senior management asper the facility’s complaints’ route. This couldhave effectively addressed and allayed con-cerns. There are visible complaints boxes in thefacility which patients are encouraged to use.”
She says: “Paracetamol is the analgesic andantipyretic of choice during all three trimes-ters. Prolonged administration of high dosesmay have toxic effects on the foetus; however, therapeutic doses used for limited periods areconsidered safe. Paracetamol is best known asPanado.”
Steyn says the actions to be taken will be formanagement of the facility to arrangeameetingwith the patient within the required 25 days toaddress written complaints. “No action will betaken against the doctor for giving what is pop-ularly known as Panado. An investigation willbe undertaken to establish how the doctor gavethe explanation, and should the investigationreveal that the clarification was not adequatelydone, the doctor will be shown how to explainand clarify these misunderstandings better infuture.”
She added that patients need to forward com-plaints about problems with the facility servic-es when they are not provided adequately.“Hanover Park CHC also receives complimentsin our compliments and complaints boxes, andthese are monitored monthly and reported tomanagement.”

The upsidedown worldof dirty old EskomTONY ROBINSON
IN a recent column we looked at solarwaterheatersandhowtheycould saveR300 a month on your electricity bill. Now let’s turn all that upside downand look at it from the point of viewof the municipality and Eskom.
Every solar geyser installed means asaving for you and a loss of roughly R3 500a year in income for the City of CapeTown. A thousand installations will takethe annual loss in revenue to R3,5 mil-lion.
Cape Town, however, hasa population in excess ofthree million, so the idea ofsolar panels on 250 000roofs is not unreasonable, but it would cost the CityR875 million a year in lostrevenue at today’s prices.Next year the figure willtop the billion rand mark. And that will make a hugehole in the municipal budg-et!
Less than 10% of thecountry’s population livesin Cape Town, so we canmultiply the local figure by10 and that means a potential loss ofR10 billion a year for municipalitiesacross the country. The Eskom share ofthe loss would probably be R5 billion orR6 billion.
Solar water heaters are something of anightmare for the municipalities and Es-kom.
Of course they have to make the rightnoises, so Eskom tells us to tweak the gey-ser temperature, use fluorescent lightsand not to put too much water in the ket-tle to save electricity.
What we are seeing, folks, are conjur-
ing tricks. A big distracting fuss over lit-tle things like keeping the fridge doorclosed while great and highly profitableamounts of electricity continue to be con-sumed by electric geysers.
The national energy plan says demandside management has barely scratchedthe surface of the potential saving. Andthen it ignores the obvious benefits andpredicts a huge increase in demand andthe desperate need for half a dozen nucle-ar power stations.
If the government was serious aboutthe energy crisis there would be a planto phase out the pure electric geyser over,
say, five years. Perhaps evena tax on electric geysers tosubsidise solar water heat-ers.
The other evil in Eskom’snightmare is gas. A com-bined cycle gas power sta-tion would be cheaper, clean-er and more efficient thananything Eskom is buildingnow.
Evenworse is that itwouldopen the way for a reticulat-ed supply of natural gas to in-dustrial areas, and make itpossible for many factoriesto use gas for their process
heat. And Eskom would lose major cus-tomers.
In fact, three plans for gas power sta-tions in the Western Cape have alreadybeen shot down. They were probably seenas the thin end of a dangerous wedge.
So the upside-down picture is that solarwater heaters, gas and serious energysaving are bad for dirty old Eskom, eventhough they would be good for the coun-try, the climate and for us.
The great truth, folks, is that the elec-tricity you don’t use is the cheapest elec-tricity of all.

Pacesetting Stormersface a flyhalf crisisTASMIN CUPIDO
WHEN the DHL Stormers takeon the new kids in the SuperRugby competition, the Mel-bourne Rebels, on Friday, theywill be looking to make it threewins out of four matches ontour.
But with injuries in vital posi-tions plaguing the Cape side, thedecision of who to field against theside that has impressed criticsthroughout the season, will deter-mine just how the Stormers endtheir four-week Australasian tour.
After losing the services of theirpoint-scoring machine and flyhalf,Peter Grant, just last week, theStormers have been dealt anotherblow with the loss of scrumhalf De-waldt Duvenhage, who sustainedan injury to his ankle during theside’s 16-3 victory over the Brum-bies in the Australian capital ofCanberra the past weekend.
Duvenhage, who flew backhome on Sunday, will be replacedby seasoned scrumhalf Ricky Jan-uarie, while head coach AllisterCoetzee will have a tough time se-lecting a suitable replacement forGrant.
He opted for 20-year-old KurtColeman for the Brumbies clash,
and says he was satisfied with hisperformance.
“I am very pleased with Kurt’sperformance – he’s still veryyoung, and this is still very muchpart of his apprenticeship,” Co-etzee said after the match.
“He needs to gain a lot more ex-perience, but it really is great thathe is doing so in a winning side.”
Despite being impressed withColeman, Coetzee has also askedformer Lions utility back and nowGriquas flyhalf, Earl Rose, to jointhe squad in Melbourne.
He has also called on the servic-es of Vodacom Cup flyhalf andscrumhalf, Louis Schreuder.
During the match against theBrumbies it was evident that themen from the Cape tried their bestto keep Coleman protected, keep-ing the ball away from him when-ever they could.
Rose, despite having more expe-rience than Coleman, has been in-consistent over the past couple ofseasons – with his career beingmarred by off-the-field incidents. But his natural talent and abilityto read the match may be the trig-ger needed in the Stormers back-line.
However, the question of wheth-er Rose is really the only optionavailable to the men in navy-blue-
and-white needs to be asked. Theinjury list sees Grant, Gray vanAswegen, Lionel Cronjé and SamLane benched at the moment.
But in the beginning stages ofthe season, who would be wearingthe coveted number-10 jersey wasa toss up between Van Aswegen,Cronjé and Elgar Watts – a Bolandplayer who impressed all duringthe warm-up matches.
Watts, who was part of the train-ing squad since December lastyear, is fit and has been playingimpressive rugby in a strugglingBoland outfit.
He has proven that he has theability to dictate the backlinewhile playing for the Pumas in lastyear’s Currie Cup, and has also no-tably worked on his placement andfrom-hand kicking.
Then there’s the impressive fly-half, Dimitri Catrakilis, from cur-rent Varsity Cup champions FNBUCT, who has also been over-looked.
Talks that Catrakilis may beleaving the Cape to ply his tradewith the EP Kings has surfaced.
In the end, Coetzee will probablybe using the match against theRebels to test combinations and ce-ment the strongest players to pos-sibly take over from his first-choice players.

The Midas touchThe Midas touchBRIAN GAFFNEY
AJAX CAPE TOWN FC ace, ThulaniSerero, made sure his name will be
embossed in gold in the annals of South Af-rican soccer history when he won four ma-jor awards at the 2010/11 PremiershipAwards ceremony held in Johannesburgon Sunday evening.
Serero (21) was awarded the Premier SoccerLeague (PSL) Footballer of the Year, as wellas the Absa Premiership Player of the Season,Players’ Player of the Season and Absa Red-Hot Young Player of the Season awards.
The Soweto-born Serero – who joins defend-ing Dutch champions Ajax Amsterdam
FC (which has signed him up) on 27 June forpre-season training – received a record totalof R600 000 in prize money at the glitteringawards ceremony.
Serero’s achievement of winning the PSLPlayer of the Year earned him R250 000 in theface of challenges from two other nomi-nees – Ajax defender Clayton Daniels and Or-lando Pirates midfielder Andile Jali.
Serero – a nominee for five Premiershipawards – was denied a clean sweep when helost out to Tlou Segolela of triple championsPirates, who won the Absa-lutely AwesomeGoal Award.
Serero hit the target 11 times this past sea-son. He joined Ajax in 2008 and won the PSLYoung Footballer award for the 2009/2010 sea-son.
Jali (21), received the Nedbank Cup YoungPlayer of theTournament award (R100 000) onSunday evening. Kaizer Chiefs’ KnowledgeMusono won the Telkom Knockout Player ofthe Tournament (R250 000) and BloemfonteinCeltic’s Patrick Tignyemb walked off with thePremiership Goalkeeper award (R50 000).
Dutch coach, Ruud Krol, who guided Pi-rates to the Premiership, Nedbank Cup andTop Eight championship titles, received theCoach of the Year award (R75 000).
