CRIME: RESIDENTS DEMAND PATROL VANS TO BE MORE VISIBLE
Seeing really is believingTARRENLEE HABELGAARN
@LeeLaVidaLoca
Two police vans are available for five ar-eas within the Lansdowne policing pre-cinct – but residents say they have yet
to see these vehicles in their streets.A lack of visibility has led to criminals
running free in the quiet streets of PenlynEstate, Mountview, Belthorn Estate, Craw-ford and a portion of Rylands, locals say.
Lansdowne police spokesperson Consta-ble Nkululeko Mnyaka says both vehiclesare on constant patrol.
“One of the vehicles is used for crime pre-vention and the other responds to com-plaints. The complaints van is never station-ary,” he insists.
But a spike in hijackings and muggings re-ported at a recent community police forummeeting have residents pointing their fin-gers at the men in blue whom, they say, arenot being proactive.
Elderly people can’t go to the shop, chil-dren are scared to walk to school and binscannot be left outside a minute after the rub-bish is collected, a Penlyn Estate homeown-er argues.
Another says that petty thieves are cash-ing in by selling everything from washingto groceries and cellphones stolen from theirproperties.
Mountview Neighbourhood Watch chair-person Niyaaz Johaadien says whileLansdowne police’s response time and col-laboration with the volunteer crime fightershave improved within the last month, visi-bility remains a challenge.
“However, residents need to report crime. The police aren’t the only ones to blame. Ourcrime statistics are always low, but we knowthat isn’t a true reflection. If we don’t reportincidents, the police won’t know where theyneed to increase visibility,” he says.
Dolomite Road in Penlyn Estate has beenflagged as a robbery hotspot.
Resident Yusuf Ishmail says he regularlywitnesses pedestrians being attacked byarmed muggers right outside his window.
Just last week he witnessed a stranger be-ing attacked by three unknown men, Ish-mail says.
“I was in my lounge when I heard someonescreaming outside. I looked through the win-dow and saw three men robbing a man of hiscellphone. Two were holding him while the
other searched his pockets,” he says.“I wanted to help, but I saw two more men
sitting in the park on the corner. I decidedto call the police station instead.”
Almost an hour passed before the sectorvan arrived at the scene, Ishmail claims.
“This is unacceptable. This community isat risk. We need police presence at alltimes.”
Landsdowne Community Policing Forumchairperson Thetha Sithole confirms in-creased police presence needs to be ad-dressed in the sector.
“Residents waiting long periods of timefor a sector vehicle to attend to their com-plaints is a common problem. Some resi-
dents have complained that they wait hoursfor police to attend to an incident and thatis why they don’t report crime anymore,” hesays.
“Residents are tired of bad service andhave decided there is no point to complain-ing because no action gets taken. The policehave to gain back the community’s trust, butresidents also need to take responsibility fortheir own safety.”
Too many incidents are going unreported, says Mountview Residents’ Associationchairperson Rushdie Desai.
Locals need to take more responsibilityfor their personal safety, he insists.
“There are many open plots that are un-
safe to walk through alone as robberies andmuggings occur there daily,” he says.
Even children are being targeted, aMountview parent says.
Katherine Johnson has had to replace herchild’s school bag and supplies twice sincethe start of the term.
“I never used to worry about my son walk-ing to school, but since kids are being target-ed by thieves I don’t feel comfortable allow-ing him to walk alone any more,” she says.
“With winter approaching, the sun riseslater and many children will walk to schoolwhile it’s still dark. We will need more policevisibility in the morning before the schoolday starts.”

NICOLE MCCAIN@nickymccain
It can take up to a decade to have a councilhouse transferred to the name of a new ten-ant.Thismeans the trauma of losing a loved one
to death is amplified for the rest of a legal ten-ant’s family, who fear eviction from theirhomes.Andwhile the transfer is tied up in red tape,
relatives may be threatened with eviction.Avril Adams has been waiting six years for
the transfer of her home.“My mother died years ago and we’re still
waiting for the council house to be trans-ferred to my stepfather’s name. She livedthere for over 30 years. I’ve lived in this houseall my life,” she says. The holdup has created several inconven-
iences forAdams. She isunable to openabankaccount, as she does not have a valid proof ofresidence. When the tenant of a council flat dies, their
spouse or children are eligible to take over thelease, says Mayoral Committee member forHuman Settlements Tandeka Gqada.“If more than one child is eligible to be con-
sidered for the tenancy, then the final deci-sion will rest with the relevant committee ofthe City of Cape Town,” she says.Tenants must be South African citizens,
must be a registered applicant for accommo-
dation, must not own property and musthave a joint income of less than R10 000.If the tenant of the house does not fall
into this category, the unlawful occupa-tion policy will apply. “The policy on un-lawful occupation is clear in that occu-pants in occupation prior to 1 March 2006can be considered for regularisation ifthey comply in terms of set criteria,” shesays.Nowhazana Tokota fought for three
years to have a council house transferredinto her name, and was often threatenedwith eviction. “I lived with an elderlywoman who I cared for. She informed therent office that I live with her and shouldget the house when she dies,” Tokota ex-plains.“I was told: ‘If it’s not in your name, we
have to kick you out’.”Housing activist Jimmy Xalipi says a
number of families find themselves strug-gling to change the name on their lease.“There are many other families in the
same situation, where the residents arepaying the rent but the house is not in theright name,” he says.“They haven’t been made the rightful
tenants. The longer these things take, themore likely families are to losedocumenta-tion proving they are entitled to livethere,” he says.Another council house resident, whodid
not want to be identified, says her familyhas moved into the council house eventhough she is paying rent.“We live in a wendy house outside while
mymother’s siblings live in the house. Be-cause the lease has not been put into myname, I’m not able to ask them to move,”she laments.Gqada could not give a time-frame for
transfers of the contract.“The transfer of tenancy and not owner-
ship varies depending on the family situa-tion and the procedure that has to be fol-lowed in terms of the policy. There havebeen some unavoidable delays; in somecases this was because nominees failed toproduce the required documents,” shesays.

New rules ahead for school transportBRENDEN RUITER
Providers of transportation for schoolchildren will soon be strongly regulatedas council’s transport authority, Trans-port for Cape Town (TCT), will soon im-plement new regulations. It is imperative that school transport is
regulated as part of the City of CapeTown’s comprehensive integrated trans-port system, said TCT transportation reg-ulation manager Lee van den Berg.“Thousands of children are transported
daily between their homes and schools. Itis important that the quality of theirtransportation is monitored.“Under the new rules, contractors will
have to have an agreement with theschool and must also be registered withTCT.
“A copy of the agreement between theschool and the contractor will have to bein the vehicle at all times. School trans-port vehicles will also be clearly markedwith a sticker,” he says. Each driverwill also be allocated a non-
transferable identification card to makesure the person behind the wheel is au-thorised to drive the vehicle.“During a recent operation,we arrested
a driver who was drunk at 07:00. Can weentrust our children into such a person’shands?” Van den Berg asks.“It is important that the designated per-
son is behind the vehicle’s steering wheelso that this individual can be held respon-sible if anything happens. Drivers will al-so have to undergo eye and special driv-ing tests.”Oneof themost important aspects of the
new rules will be that particularly prima-ry school children must be accompaniedby either a parent or a teacher in theirschool buses.“We’ve had a case where a two-year-old
boy stood on the pavement, unaware ofwhere his school is.“Hewas just dropped off. There are also
many cases where children are droppedon the other side of a busy highway. Wewant to eliminate all these problems.”The new rules will also include that
school buses have soft seats and first aidkits.Contractors must also provide TCT
with detailed routes.“We do not want a situation where
school transport infringes on existingroutes covered by other modes of trans-port.”

Crime in and around Wetton station isdriving commuters and pedestrians offthe rails.
Opportunistic crooks areusing the stationto ambush locals, leading to the authoritiesbranding it a problem.
The station has become a hotspot forcrime, Lansdowne Police Station command-erColonelLavonaJanuari confirmedat a re-cent community police forum meeting.
Forum vice-chairperson Keith Blake wastasked with going to inspect Wetton stationand the surrounding area. “The station defi-nitely favours the criminal element preyingon passengers,” he says.
“At the entrance to the station there’s abridge where homeless citizens have takenup residence on two sites. Trees and shrubsaround the station can act as camouflage forcriminals.”
Sebastian Lowry (29) says he was almostrobbed recently while walking home fromthe station.
“Two guys with knives wanted to steal mybag and my cellphone – they threatened tokill me,” he says.
“I was so scared, I just froze and stoodthere saying nothing. Luckily some otherpassengers walking past deterred them andthey ran away.”
Suleiman Ameerodien (44) says his vehi-cle was also broken into while parked at thestation.
“They stole everything they could laytheir hands on,” he says.
“Myradio, all the speakers, myseat coversand head rests – even my air-freshener wastaken.”
Lansdowne police spokesperson Consta-ble Nkululeko Mnyaka says thieves are us-ing knives and toy guns to rob their victims.
“There have been lots of robberies duringrush hour in the morning and evening,” hesays.
“From this week, we will be sending a pa-trol vehicle there daily.”
Mnyaka says commuters should not walkalone to and from the station.
Metrorail regional manager MthuthuzeliSwartz has also expressed concerns aboutWetton Station.
“Both the commander of the railway po-lice and the regional head of protection serv-ices have been alerted to the customers andresidents’ concerns,” he says.
“Theywill be investigating the allegationsand adjust their joint deployment strategyaccordingly.”
Swartz also appealed to the public to re-port all incidents, however trivial it mayseem.
“Commuter activism is alive and well inCape Town and this assists both the policeandMetrorail to put a stop to criminal activ-ity within railway precincts.”
He adds that unless communities work
with the police on sustainable solutions, crime will simply shift from trains and sta-tions to surrounding neighbourhoods.
“It is vital that neighbourhood watches,CPFs, ratepayers’ associations and privatesecurity companies work together to ensurethat criminal activity is curtailed,” saysSwartz.

KENWYN: VOLUNTEER CRIME FIGHTER PREPARES FOR BATTLE
Loonat ready to tackle ‘corrupt’ copsCARLO PETERSEN
@carlo_petersen
“I am not a sissy. I am an activist!”Hanif Loonat, the former provincial
Community Policing Board chairper-son, has gained a second wind after his re-cent arrest and is chompingat the bit to tack-le police corruption. His recent arrest initially left him de-
spondent and ready to hang up his gloves. But renewed inspiration has seen this
crime fighter work out a plan of action.“The message must be clear,” he says.“They thought they could knockme down,
but I’m coming back stronger than ever.”Loonat recently branded the woman who
levelled intimidation charges against himasa “pawn” in a high-level police conspiracy.Claremont resident Rukshana Parker has
denied this, saying she knew nothing ofLoonat’s ordeal with police. He contends the entire process of arrest
andhis detentionwas irregular and “orches-trated byhigher echelonswithin the police”.The matter between Parker and Loonat
ensued following Parker suing her formeremployer for crimen injuria and defamation
relating to accusations levelled against herin the workplace. She says Loonat came to her house and
threatened her, on behalf of her former em-ployer.“He told me I must be careful because my
employer could bomb my house and harmmy children if I did not drop the charges,”Parker says.Last year, Loonat’s constant claims about
police corruption, inefficiency and lack ofpolitical will to bring culprits to book led tohis suspension as policing board chairper-son in June.Loonat has filed papers with the Equality
Court to challenge the suspension.“Gangsters pay police and prosecutors to
avoid getting convicted, and there are high-ranking officers involved, too,” he says.“I have been involved in policing for 19
years and have never come across such in-terest in a petty charge like mine. It angersme to see apartheid-style policing still existsin this day and age.”These “immoral actions” are the direct
cause of “innocent children getting mur-dered and introduced to the social ills ofmodern times”, he insists.
Provincial police commissioner Lieuten-ant-General Arno Lamoer has since re-sponded to Loonat’s claims, saying: “If hehas evidence to support the allegations, thenthey must be investigated.”Loonat says after his arrest, he decided to
resign himself to a decent family life.“At the time I saw that as my only option
in this corrupt and immoral world, butthings have changed since then,” he says.Loonat has hired a top private investiga-
tor and attorney to build a strong caseagainst the police. He has also approached the Public Protec-
tor to investigate his arrest and is planningvarious community projects to get back intocrimefighting.“My campaign against corrupt policing
should be an encouragement to others too,”he says.“Don’t let them scare you; let them moti-
vate you.”

HANOVER PARK: GANG WAR SPILLOVER FEARED
Biting the bulletCARLO PETERSEN
@carlo_petersen
Fears of gang wars being fought else-where spilling over into Hanover Parkare mounting.
A spate of gang violence which eruptedlate last year left more than 20 dead and thecommunity fraught with fear. However, after more than a month of
peace an air of calm has given residents achance to breathe a sigh of relief.Community Policing Forum (CPF) chair-
person Anthony Daniels says a ceasefireagreement between the gangs is keeping thearea free of shootings. The CPF is constantly liaising with gang-
sters tomaintain the truce, butDaniels nowhas other fears.“There are still a few gangs that are disa-
greeing about a few things, but they are dis-cussing solutions,” he says.“My main concern now is that gang vio-
lence in other areas might spill over toHanover Park.”Gang violence in Mitchell’s Plain has
seen eight people shot dead this month.A specialised police unit has since been
deployed to the area following the spate ofgang-related shootings.Major General Jeremy Vearey, com-
mander of Operation Combat which dealswith infiltrating drug gangs, believes “spillovers” are based on a misunderstanding ofgangs.“The Americans in Hanover Park have
contact with the Americans in Mitchell’sPlain,” he says.“So they exist beyond the territorial
boundaries in various neighbourhoods. Weoften arrest shooters in Hanover Park whoactually live in Mitchell’s Plain.“It’s such awide cross section – they have
structures everywhere. So if a gang fightpops up in one area, the guys who belong
to the same gangs in other areas will comeand assist,” he says.“So you have this thing where they go in-
to different areas to take each other out.”Vearey also discouragedDaniels fromne-
gotiating with gangsters.“As police, we do not negotiatewith gang-
sters,” says Vearey.“It’s nonsense. It’s a myth because they
are criminals.”Daniels says he has witnessed how gang
wars elsewhere spill over into HanoverPark many times.“It happens often, especially withManen-
berg andMitchell’s Plain because the gangsare closely connected,” he says.Reformed gangster Edward Smith (31)
was a member of the 27 camp within theAmericans gang.Smith confirmed Vearey and Daniels’
statements.“Yes, they will send a shooter into anoth-
er area to help them fight there,” he says.“Sometimes it’s to kill someone specific
and other times it’s just to beef up the num-bers in the camp.“If you go there for a few days, the guys
in your gang take care of youwell,” he adds.Philippi police spokesperson Lieutenant
Lance Goliath says the situation is undercontrol at the moment.“We have had a few sporadic shootings
but nothing has been linked to the gangwarthat recently subsided,” he says.“Spill-overs do happen, but we try our
best to curb gang violence in all areas.”OnMonday, a 57-year-old man was hit by
a stray bullet after leaving his home in Lo-mond Court.Gun shots rang out in Lonston Road and
the man was hit in his chest. He died at the scene.Lieutenant Goliath confirmed a suspect-
ed gunman was arrested in Walvis Courtand has been charged with murder.

XAVIER MICHAELS believes the selection processwill be more accurate, as it could cause conflictif the community does not agree. “I will apply, because I know the decision will a honest one.”
BURMIQ DRAGNER believes this will diminish cor-ruption in the police service. “I think this decisionwill create a more trusting relationship betweenthe police and their communities.”
JUSTICE MENE has been waiting for the police tohave stricter measures, as the crime rate is toohigh. “I applied several times, but never got a callback; hopefully I will get a call if I apply again.”
JASMINA PEKEUR says there are advantages anddisadvantages to the public parade. “It will defi-nitely decrease corruption and dishonesty in thepolice service but it will also hinder job creation.”
MARI HORNE says people will know the duties ofa police recruit. “If I were a police officer, I wouldbe more cautious of my action. If people say ithinders job creation, it already raises a red flag.”
OLIVIA CASSELS believes in monitoring officers.“This will ensure transparency and shouldn’t bea deterrent to those who want to serve their coun-try honestly.”

MANENBERG: ANC BOSS SMOOTHS TEEN’S TRANSFER TO SAFER SCHOOL
Call to find a solution for allCARLO PETERSEN
@carlo_petersen
Seventeen-year-old Darren Jacobs re-cently locked himself indoors for twomonths.
The Grade 11 pupil feared for his life asa relentless gang war raged outside his Cor-rie Court home in Manenberg. After losing out on vital lessons at Silver-
streamHigh School, Darren’smother fearedher son would not make it to matric nextyear.Sandra Jacobs (57) says Darren was so
traumatised by the gang violence near hisschool he couldn’t concentrate at school.“He started staying home and there was
nothing we could do to convince him other-wise,” she says. The Jacobs’ then requested a transfer to
Garlandale High School near Athlone.“I sent everything to the education depart-
ment and after two months I have not heardanything from them,” she says.Jacobs says even the teachers at Silver-
stream wrote recommendation letters forDarren. Then last Monday, Jacobs attended a pub-
lic meeting where ANC provincial chairper-son Marius Fransman was in attendance. The desperate mother made a plea and
Fransman responded by saying hewould en-sure Darren was placed at a safer school.Darren was accepted at Garlandale High
School two days later.Fransman feels Darren is a symbol for
many township youth suffering under gangviolence.“I’m just glad we managed to get him into
another school,” he says.“Darren is an example of the many Cape
Flats (pupils) who are suffering due to an in-
effective provincial education departmentwho do not prioritise pupils’ safety.”Fransman says the provincial govern-
ment should effectively partner with com-munity organisations and political leader-ship to create a proper integrated schoolsafety plan.“The blood of the next (pupil) who is killed
or injured near or on a school by gang vio-lence is on Zille’s hands,” he adds. The provincial education department
counters that the ministry has not receivedany letters from the Jacobs family.Education department spokesperson Pad-
dy Atwell says the district office has re-ceived transfer requests from Manenbergpupils following the outbreak of gang vio-lence in the area.“I have yet to confirm if any letters were
received from Mrs Jacobs,” he says.“Our district office has been trying to as-
sist these parents, but in some cases they
have had specific demands which we couldnot accommodate.”Atwell says in terms of gang violence, pro-
vincial government has only limited pow-ers.“National government is ultimately re-
sponsible for policing,” he says.Roegshanda Pascoe from Taking Back
Our Streets says Darren is one of the luckyfew to receive help from government.“It is clear they don’t really care about the
future of the area collectively,” she says.“Darren is one out of thousands of kids
who are traumatised here. What aboutthem? They have to get up and go to schoolregardless of how they feel about what ishappening around them.“How about a permanent solution instead
of these temporary political moves whichbenefit only a few?” she asks.Pascoe says various community organisa-
tions have now joined hands to promote asafer community.Manenberg Action Committee spokesper-
son Larenzo Morris confirmed this, sayinga safety programme is on the cards.“Government structures have failed to
produce a substantial plan, so we are takingit upon ourselves,” he says.“Fifty security personnel will be em-
ployed from the community and theywill en-sure the schools are safer. It’s a shame thatresidents have to take up this fight, but wemust do what we must to ensure our chil-dren are safe.”The Safer Schools programme, which
aims to bring gang violence surroundingfive local schools under control, will run un-til tomorrow (Friday 28 March).Thereafter the community will take over
from police and patrol the area to make itsafer for students and teachers.

PEOPLE'S POST | LANSDOWNEThursday, 27 March 2014 NEWS 9RONDEBOSCH EAST: IRE AT PROPOSED HOUSING EXTENSION
Residents don’t want a storeyCARLO PETERSEN
@carlo_petersen
A proposed extension to aproperty in RondeboschEast has residents tearing
out their hair. The City of Cape Town recentlyreceived a proposal from YedidLevi to add another storey to hissemi-detached house in betweenWaltham and Wolsey roads.Structural technologist RowanSmith, who made the applicationon behalf of Levi, says the previ-ous owner made alterationswhich were not “aestheticallypleasing”.But neighbours are pulling outall the stops to see the plans reject-ed.Waltham Road resident PeterPeters says the proposed exten-sions are ridiculous.“Hemust bemad! Itwill devaluemy property, which I have spentso much on over the years,” hesays.“If he wanted to build a double-storey thenhe should have boughta free-standing property.”Resident Margaret Sefora also
strongly objects to Levi’s plans.“There will be a loss of sunlightwhich will render the neighbour-ing properties dark, cold anddamp,” she says.“Iwill be really angry if the plansare approved.”Natalie Simons of RiversideRoad feels the double-storey will
obstruct and block out her view ofthe mountain.“I cannot bear the thought ofhaving a house block my view. Itis one of the main reasons I movedhere so many years ago,” she says.
Resident Anthony MacMinnfeels building another storeywould completely destroy the char-acter of the area and erode the val-ue of the surrounding properties.“There are currently three rows
of properties squeezed into thissmall block of land,” he says.“Building another storey therewill just lead to over-developmentand over-population in this area.”Wolsey Road resident Gavin
Carter fears more developmentwill lead to increased congestionand noise levels in the area.“Any proposed extension thereshould be very carefully consid-ered,” he says.“That land has already beenover-developed.”Levi has responded to the objec-tions and feels they do not makesense.“After looking at all the letters
of objection and noticing they areidentical, I get the impression thatone of the neighbours drafted thisletter. I feel this is wrong becausethere are certain issues, for exam-ple, blocking out view and loss ofdaylight and sunlight that don’t af-fect everyone concerned, but yetthey still signed.”Levi says he is undeterred andwill do what is necessary to buildhis second storey.“If it’s within the law then I don’tsee why not,” he says.Smith says his client wants toeliminate the “unappealing altera-tions and add one storey to the en-tire house”.“I have designed it to be in keep-ing with the adjoining houses. With regard to parking, light pene-tration and neighbours’ privacy, the alterationswill not impact neg-atively at all,” Smith adds. The matter will be discussed atthe next subcouncil meeting onThursday 17 April.Ward councillor Anthea Greenwas not available to comment.

You never hear that. Lucky number 11!It’s always luckynumber seven or eventhree, but never 11. Then again luck
has nothing to do with this. For thosenot in theknow, 11 is thenumber
of generations Toyota has successfullypulledoffwhen it comes to theCorolla range. This is one of the best-selling models withinthe Toyota stable. Hitting more than 40 mil-lion sales worldwide over the years. That’snotwhere it ends, though. With the newToy-ota Corolla that hit the market in January, there are no signs of their track record slow-ing down.
The new Corolla hasn’t been on the mar-ket for more than two months and alreadymade it to the top of CARmagazine’s annualTop 12 Best Buys, walking off with the titleof Best Compact Sedan for 2014.One of my favourite car sites broke it
down best: “If car shopping were computersoftware, theCorolla couldbe thedefault set-ting. It has the space, power, and features tomeet most people’s needs.”Couldn’t have said it better myself. This
is the ultimate all-rounder, with more. Thethingwithbringing out anewedition/modelto a car that has been on the market since1975 is that you will have to make it betterevery year. You can’t just stay stagnant.Standing still is just as bad as taking a step
back. Don’t fear, though.Toyota will never stand still! The Corolla
is proof of that. With leather all round(smaller engine models do sport a bit ofcloth), electric windows, 6.1” colour touchdisplay LCD screen, reverse camera, multi-function steering wheel, and a dash boardthat gives me a sense of belonging; a sensethat generally only ever gets created by a carthat will set you back more than half a bar.It truly delivers. The new Corolla benefits from a three-
year/100 000km warranty and comes with astandard five-year/ 90 000 km service plan.Service intervals are set at 15 000km (includ-ing the 1.4 D). The new models are also sup-ported by the ToyotaCare Roadside Assist-
ance Programme which entitles customersto 24-hour roadside assistance, ensuring ul-timate peace-of-mind motoring. And 11 doesn’t just stop at the number of
generations, it also marks the number ofmodels the new Corolla will be available in.The 11 models are as follows with pricing:1.3 EsteemR214 900; 1.3 Prestige R232 900; 1.4D Esteem R237 900; 1.4 D Prestige R249 900;1.6 EsteemR225 900; 1.6 Prestige R241 900; 1.6Prestige MD S R252 900; 1.6 SprinterR248 900; 1.8 Prestige R251 900; 1.8 ExclusiveR272 900; and 1.8 Exclusive MD S R283 900.V The Corolla was recently launched at Halfway Toyo-ta in Ottery. I have loved Ford since the very first timethatmyoldmansaidhis dreamcarwouldbe a 1965 Ford Falcon.Well, over 20 years
later and I still love Ford. The only problem was that I discovered
SUVs. With that said, Ford took a place onthe back seat as none of their SUVs reallycaught my eye. That has changed though,in a big way.Ford surprised us with two new releases
last year in the SUV rage, or shall I say “ba-by”SUVrange.TheFordKugaand theFordEcoSport.Great, Ford came to the SUVparty. It was
totally worth the wait!I recently drove the EcoSport EcoBoost
1.0l GTDi Titanium. The review on this ba-by went onto paper very easily. The hardpart was giving this beauty up aweek later.It formed part of the family.Don’t get me wrong with the “baby” talk;
there is nothing “baby” about theEcoSport. It delivers.Or likeFord’s slogan says: “Fordgoes further”. It went further. Much fur-ther. Reaching the 100kmmark with 5.7F offuel and only emitting only 131g/km of CO²emissionsmakes this SUVnot just aworthy
contender in the SUV market, but also aneconomical and ecological contender ofnote. That is rarely said about SUVs.They’re known to be very thirsty (not eco-friendly) on the roads.Laying eyes on the Ford EcoSport for the
first time was like watching a rugby lockgetting ready for a scrum. The EcoSport isshort and high, with a buff front end andrugged backside. With a bulky, coveredspare wheel attached to the outside of thelarge and convenient side-opening reardoor, it implies pure ruggedness and welove it for that!Stepping into the EcoSport you immedi-
ately see that it is definitely part of the Fordfamily. With the dash reminding me of theever popular Fiesta model. The dash is hard plastic which I wasn’t
originally a fan of, but it works. Everythingcomes together. The boot is slightly lessspacious as youwould like, but fold the rearseats and the load space more than doublesup.Bottom line? Ford took its time in enter-
ing the SUV segment, and they made itworth it. The EcoSport is practical, withvery good on-road dynamics. Maybe therewill be a Ford EcoSport 4x4 on the cardssomeday
ECO-nice: Ford’s EcoSport is a welcome entry to the SUV market. PHOTO: MARC BOW PHOTOGRAPHY
Know how to jump-startJump-starting your vehicle the wrong waycan turn out to be very dangerous for yourcar’s computer. When an Electronic Control Unit (ECU),
also known as the computer, of a vehicleneeds to be repaired or replaced, motoristsare often confrontedwith ahefty repair bill.AnECU is a very powerful control system
capable of gathering hundreds of channelsof information to control every aspect ofyour car’s enginemanagement or other im-portant vehicle functions such as handlingcharacteristics, braking systems and cli-mate control.Les McMaster, chairperson of the Motor
IndustryWorkshopAssociation (Miwa), ex-plains: “If onewere to compare a car engineto a human body, the pistons might be theheart, the headlightswould be the eyes, andthe ECU would be the brain. The ECU con-trols a series of actuators to make surethings are running smoothly within the en-gine.”He continues: “Within the engine bay,
there are several sensors that provide theECU with maintenance information. TheECU then uses these sensor readings to ad-just engine actuators for optimum efficien-cy.”What motorists might not know is that
they can contribute to the premature fail-ure of ECUs by being unaware of the dam-age caused by not adhering to a couple ofsimple rules. Jump-starting your car incor-rectly is one of the most common ways onecan damage an ECU. McMaster providesthe following useful hints to help motoristsextend the ECUs life’s expectancy:
. Always connect the leads positive topositive and negative to negative as manyECU’s has been damaged by shortcircuiting the jumper leads;
. Always connect the positive leads ofboth batteries first, then the negative leads.Thiswill “soften” the flowof power throughthe earthing system and prevent powersurges or spikes;
. Never attempt to connect the jumpleads with the key in the ignition; only in-sert the key once the leads have been con-nected. Failure to adhere to this may leadto the coding between the key and the ECUbecoming corrupted and inmany instancesthis corruption is irreversible.“If you are in doubt on how to jump-start
your vehicle, seek the advice of your near-est Miwa accredited workshop in your areawho will be happy to explain the properjump-starting procedures to you,” McMas-ter concludes.

’Plain trio prove their powerLIAM MOSES@LiamCPT
Three Mitchell’s Plain residents wonseveral medals, shattered records andearnednational colours at theSouthAf-
rica Powerlifting Federation Raw Champi-onships.Brothers Umar and Ebrahim Pregnolato
and EbrahimMobara impressed at the tour-nament earlier this month and are now setto represent SA at the International Power-lifting Federation Raw Championships inJune.Raw powerlifting sees athletes compete in
the sport’s three disciplines – bench press, squat and deadlifts – without equipmentsuch as squat suits or bench vests for assist-ance.This will be Umar’s second international
event after competing at the world equippedchampionships, where equipment is al-lowed. He believes he may have an advan-
tage.“I’m going to be training a lot harder this
time,” he says.“I’m far better at raw events. Two years
ago I competed in the SA equipped champi-onships without equipment – just kneewraps, no squat suit and no bench vest – andI got the overall trophy. I did the same at(the) world champs. I think I stand a chanceof winning a medal this year. The othercountries aren’t as strong at raw.”The 19-year-old placed second in both the
junior and senior 74kg categories at the SAChampionships, while younger brother Eb-rahim took first in the sub-junior and thirdin the junior 66kg categories. The 16-year-old also broke five records at
the champs, rewriting the sub-junior squat, bench press, deadlift and overall total
records and the junior deadlift record in hisweight category.Ebrahim aims to break another record at
the World Championships.“I’m proud of my achievements as I failed
all my dead-lifts and squats at last year’s SAEquipped Championships,” he says.“I believe Iwill dowell at theWorld Cham-
pionships, because the deadlift record formydivision is 213kgand Iwas just 8kgs shortof that at the SA Championships.”Umar has been participating in the sport
for two years, while Ebrahimhas been train-ing for around a year.Mobara (50) has been training for just six
months. He won the 93kg Masters Two – for45 to 50-year-olds – category, broke the dead-lift record and claimed third in the MasterOne (40-45) 93kg category.
He says he took up the sport as his asthmaprevents him from doing other exercises.“Instead of sitting in front of the TV, I
trained for six months and the results speakfor themselves,” he says.“I enjoy it because it makesme strong and
allowsme todo something that (most people)my age can’t do. I love going home at night,in pain; I love getting fit; I love the challengeto improve.”The three athletes are all members of the
Mitchell’s Plain Powerlifting Club, whichwas started just 18 months ago. They will each need around R7 000 to com-
pete at the World Championships in Gau-teng.The club has called on any businesses to
help cover the cost by sponsoring the ath-letes, and thanked Winners Cash and Carryin Lentegeur for always assisting with spon-sorship in the past.V Anyone interested in assisting can phone Faik Preg-nolato on 073 182 1491.

‘Team spirit will win Varsity Cup’LIAM MOSES
@LiamCPT
Ikey Tigers coach Kevin Musikanth be-lieves the Varsity Cup final will comedown to “who wants it more” instead of
the game’s technical aspects.UCT will face the North West University
(Pukke) in Potchefstroom on Monday, afterbeating arch rivals Stellenbosch Universityin the semi-final this week.
“The rugby stuff was prepared months be-fore, so it’s the little things that (will) makethe difference,” Musikanth says.
“It’s about the love the guys have for each
other and that fact that they enjoy playingtogether. You have to be (a) good rugby teamto reach the play-offs, so generally there isparity in the final. It’s the little things (suchas) team togetherness and morale that (will)make the difference in terms of winning.”
Musikanth says UCT’s morale is high, asindicated in the semi-final win over Maties.“One of the major reasons why we won thesemi-final was because the guys enjoy beingtogether; they didn’t want this campaign toend.”
UCT produced an accomplished perform-ance to see off Maties in semi-final, scoringtwo tries to win 20-8.
Wing Lihleli Xoli and eighth-man MichaelBotha got the tries, while flyhalf Dean Grantscored two penalties and two conversions.Stellenbosch responded through a try fromscrumhalf Jean Nel and flyhalf Robert duPreez’s conversion late in the match.
The Ikeys will have to produce anotherclinical showing to top Pukke in the final.
The hosts thrashed UCT 47-24 at the GreenMile in the opening game of the competitionin early February.
But Musikanth says both sides havechanged and progressed since then.
“I don’t think we will go into the final anydifferently than any other game we have pre-
pared for,” he says.“The loss to Pukke was our first game al-
most nine weeks ago. Both teams are vastlydifferent in the way they perform now. Wewon’t go into it differently, but our perform-ance will be vastly different.”
Pukke’s only loss this season came athome against Maties, a side that UCT beatboth home and away in the round-robin stag-es and the semis respectively.
The Ikeys will hope to emulate their localrivals to win the final and their second Var-sity Cup title.V The final will be broadcast live on Supersport at19:00.

Fish Hoek AFC’s junior sidesare brimming with confidenceahead of the start of the ama-teur football season.
The club’s under-16 and un-der-13 sides both claimed titlesover the weekend, cruising tovictory in the Rygersdal AFCand Strandfontein AFC tour-naments respectively.
Junior club chairpersonMichael Jenkins says concen-trating on development struc-tures made the victories possi-ble.
“Over the last few years wehave been working very hardto offer the community reallygood football development,”he says.
“All the junior teams play inthe Cape Town Tygerberg Lo-cal Football Association (CT-TLFA) Super League and theyall want to be competitive. Theleague starts mid-April andwe are looking forward tothat.”
The under-16 side were un-beaten throughout the Rygers-dal Tournament, winning sixgames to claim the title.
The under-13 side were evenmore impressive, staying un-beaten and notching up victo-ries against some of CapeTown’s best junior teams.
Fish Hoek won three fromthree in the group stages, scor-ing 10 goals and conceding justtwo in wins over Southamp-
ton, Fulham and Holy Cross. They went on to thrash
Standards FC 6-2 in the roundof 16 and beat MorgensterUnited 2-0 in the quarter-final.
In the semi-final they beatMilano United 1-0 after thegame was stopped early whena fan invaded the pitch, andthen edged Maties 2-1 in the fi-nal.
“The Strandfontein tourna-ment is an excellent draw of 32clubs from around the Cape;all the perennial powerhousesare there,” Jenkins says.
“To win is a great achieve-ment. Milano knocked outAjax in the quarter-final andMaties knocked-out Old Mutu-al – to play and win againstthose teams was great.”
Southampton won the PlateDivision of the tournamentwith a 3-2 victory over Rock-A-Fellas, while Fulham won theShield Division by beatingBeacon Spurs 2-1.
Bayhill United’s JodyArends claimed the top goal-scorer award for netting ninegoals in the tournament.
Several of the teams whichparticipated at the Strandfon-tein tournament, includingthe victors and hosts, willagain be in action at the Ken-sington AFC Youth Cup forunder-11s and under-15s thisweekend. It will take place atthe Royal Road Sports Com-plex in Kensington from to-morrow (Friday) to Sunday 30March.

The Western Province Softball women’steam coach has heaped praise on herplayers after the team’s National Pro-
vincial Championship (NPC) win over theweekend.Province suffered just one loss in the tour-
nament andbeatTshwane in the final atTurf-hall on Sunday to claim the title.Coach Margi Hill credits every player for
the victory.“I’m overwhelmed and extremely proud of
the players’ performances,” says Hill.“You can have a game plan but if the play-
ers don’t execute it, you won’t win. I can’t de-scribe how proud I am of the girls. Theyweredetermined to win this.”Hill says shenever doubtedher team’s abil-
ity to win the tournament.WP went into the NPC as favourites and
didn’t disappoint, drubbing KwaZulu-Natal11-1 in their opening game. They pulled off several other heavy victo-
ries during the tournament – Limpopo werebrushed aside 18-0, CentralGautengwere dis-patched 14-2, Eastern Cape were thrashed
15-0 and North West Province were pum-melled 29-1.Tshwane were the only side to beat WP,
edging the hosts 7-5 on Saturday morning. However, Province made up for the loss
with a comfortable 9-2 win in the play-offs onSaturday evening and a 8-5 win in the finalon Sunday.Province’s Nicole Fortune describes the
victory as “meaningful” for all of her team-mates. “It was nice to bring the title back toCape Town considering WP didn’t partici-pate at last year’s NPC. We hadn’t won fortwo years before that, after having held it forso long before then,” she says.“It was awesome to win and even better to
win at home. We had so much support withall the spectators coming throughout thetournament.”Fortune says the gameswere still tough de-
spite the massive scores posted by her teammates. The WP men’s team narrowly missed out
on a place in the tournament final after a lossin the play-offs.They suffered just two defeats heading into
the knockout stages – against Tshwane andLimpopo. However, the men’s side came undone
against Erkuruleni in the knockout rounds, losing 3-2. Province had defeated the sameErkuruleni side 4-0 in the group stages. The loss meant WP finished the tourna-
ment in fourth.
